The inflammation or infection of diverticula is generally termed as Diverticulitis. Diverticula are the small pouches present over the walls of intestines. The diverticula formation is something benign, which is generally referred as Diverticulosis. The term diverticulitis includes two polarities from a small abscess to bowel perforation.

The diverticula formation can be anywhere in your gastro intestinal tract but more common to descending and sigmoid colon. Although the first section of small intestine is very frequent to diverticula, they seldom makes nuisance.

Have you ever wondered why one is not bothered over diverticulosis unless they are diagnosed with diverticulitis? This is because in most of the cases one won't be aware of diverticulosis, as it rarely shows any symptoms. It is not much painful enough to get you consult your physician. But in some it may show symptoms like:-

  • Cramping over left side of the stomach. But it will be relieved on passing gas or by bowel movement
  • Bright red bloody stool

But the severity of diverticulitis is bit more serious. It is usually presented with too severe abdominal pain and fever.

Diverticulitis can be of two types, either acute or chronic. The acute diverticulitis may manifest as one or more attacks and infection. But in chronic type, even though the infection or inflammation may subside, but will never clean up completely. The ultimate outcome of diverticulitis is Bowel Obstruction. This will end up as some serious symptoms including:-

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Thin stools

If the obstruction lasts for longer time without management, there is an increase in pain & tenderness which can cause severe nausea and vomiting.

The unattended diverticulitis can seriously damage your entire system, and may end up with surgery. The major complication of diverticulitis includes:-

  • Abscess – It usually seen around the infected diverticula. The chances of developing peritonitis are more, which is a life threatening situation and requires immediate attention.
  • Scarring of Intestinal Walls – This can often lead to intestinal blockage or stricture
  • Fistulas – Most common begins in the large intestine and get connected with urinary bladder, infecting your adjacent kidneys. But the connection is less common with skin or vagina.
  • Severe bleeding which can only be compromised with blood transfusion
