How Can Dermatitis Herpetiformis Be Treated?

dermatitis herpetiformis, herbal hemedies, ayurveda, ayurvedic treatment

Dermatitis herpetiformis, also known as Duhring's disease or gluten rash is a difficult condition to live with. It's an autoimmune blistering disorder which is characterized by itchy, burning and blistering skin rash, mostly affecting knees, scalp, elbows, back and buttocks. Dermatitis herpetiformis considered to be caused by allergic reaction to ingestion of gluten. Usually patients of dermatitis herpetiformis have celiac disease (Gluten sensitive enteropathy). Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease in which patient cannot digest gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Some people may confuse it with herpes virus infection due to the name given to it but herpetiformis here is used due to the resemblance of skin rash to the blisters of herpes lesions.

As stated earlier, dermatitis herpetiformis is associated with celiac disease. Celiac disease can cause many symptoms such as nausea, adnominal pain, vomiting, constipation etc. When person with wheat allergy or celiac disease have gluten consisting diet it triggers autoimmune response mediated by IgA antibodies. Then these IgA antibodies get attached with the gluten and enter the bloodstream where they start clogging the blood vessels, especially small blood vessels in the skin. WBCs (White blood cells) get attached with these clogging structures which release a chemical known as complement. This chemical causes itching, blistering and burning rash on different parts of the body. This gluten allergy or sensitivity runs in the families.

Main signs of this disorder is itchy rash which appears on different parts of the body:

  • Elbows
  • Knees
  • Lower back
  • Hairline
  • Shoulders
  • Back of the neck
  • Scalp
  • Buttocks

These rashes are usually similar on both the sides of the body and rash comes and goes often. Before complete flare up of the blistering rash there appears mild burning rashes with clear fluid which scratches off and heal. This process of skin rashes goes on for months and years or even sometimes goes into remission to return later.

This disorder is diagnosed by skin biopsy. A small sample of the skin is taken and examined by doctor under a microscope. Second method to diagnose it is by direct immunofluorescence test. In this, a dye is used to stain skin around the rash which will mark the presence of IgA antibody. Blood test can be done to see the presence of these antibodies and an intestinal biopsy confirms the diagnosis by showing damage due to celiac disease.

Dapsone is a specific antibiotic used for treating this condition along with gluten free diet. This antibiotic have serious side effects like liver ailments, anemia, sensitivity to light, muscle weakness, myasthenia gravis and peripheral neuropathy. In modern system of medicine dermatitis herpetiformis is considered to be a lifelong disease which cannot be cured. They recommend only gluten free diet to maintain for whole life.

If dermatitis herpetiformis is left untreated or maltreated it can even result in intestinal cancer due to continuous inflammation. Other common complications can be anemia and malabsorption of the nutrients in the intestines. Dermatitis herpetiformis is usually found to be associated with other autoimmune diseases like hypothyroidism, Sjogren's syndrome, vitiligo, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes mellitus etc.

According to Ayurveda all the autoimmune diseases are the result of accumulation of the "Ama", an undigested particles or toxins in the tissues or cells of the body. Immune system of the body recognizes this ama as the foreign body and tries to remove it from the cells. During the removal of ama certain chemical reactions follows and healthy cells also get destroyed resulting in autoimmune reactions. On the other hands there are three doshas in Ayurveda (kapha, pitta, and vata) imbalance of these three also leads to generation of various health issues. In the case of Dermatitis herpetiformis due to an imbalance in tridosha, excessive production of toxins in the body takes place. These toxins get accumulates in the different body tissues which further leads to the production of symptoms such as itchiness, rashes on the body.

What is the treatment of Anaplastic ependymoma as per Ayurveda?

Anaplastic Ependymoma, Herbal Remedies

Anaplastic ependymoma is a type of tumor which is formed when the cells in the brain and spinal cord (Central nervous system) starts to multiply rapidly in an abnormal manner. Anaplastic word is derived from the Greek word which means poor differentiation of the cells where the morphological characteristics of cells are lost. Ependymoma word is also used for the tumor. It can occur at any age and when it occurs in children then the most probable location is the brain (Intracranial). In adults, it is found to occur in the spinal cord. Signs and symptoms of anaplastic ependymoma depend upon the age of the person, location, and size of the tumor.

In Ayurveda tumor is known as Granthi, which is a Sanskrit word. According to Ayurveda, all the diseases are a result of an imbalance of doshas in the body, i.e. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha Dosha. Similarly, tumors are the result of aggravated Kapha Dosha. This Kapha dosha gets accumulated in the blood, muscles and fatty tissues where this dosha gives rise to a tumor, i.e. hard, round, elevated and nodular growth. Ayurveda classifies tumors into 9 types- Vataja granthi, Kaphaja granthi, Pittaj granthi, Mansa granthi, Rakta granthi, Asthi granthi, Vrana granthi, Meda granthi, and Sira granthi.

As discussed above the signs and symptoms depends upon the age of the patients, location, and size of the tumor. However, some of the common ones are:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of concentration
  • Changes in thinking
  • Nystagmus, i.e. uncontrolled movement of the eyes
  • Increased head size in children due to the accumulation of fluid because of tumor, i.e. hydrocephalus.
  • Pain and stiffness in the neck
  • Loss of reflexes
  • Sensory changes

The genetic changes which cause abnormal and rapid growth of the cells of the nervous system are considered to be the reason behind anaplastic ependymoma. This result in the development of the tumor. These abnormal genetic changes are neither present in each and every cell of the body nor present from the birth. They are usually acquired during a person's lifetime and only in a single cell from which the tumor begins. This somatic mutation i.e. acquired genetic change results in rapid multiplication of the cells and passes the genetic change to each of the daughter cells which further multiplies resulting in a tumor. The exact cause of this tumor is not clear neither any of the environmental factors resulting in these changes.

Presence of this tumor is suspected by the doctor during medical history and the further doctor may advise the patient to go through MRI, CT scan and later on the diagnosis can be confirmed by biopsy.

In modern medicine, the one and only specific treatment available for this is surgery in which the tumor is removed to the possible extent. Even if the whole tumor is removed the patient have to go through the radiation therapy to minimize the chances of relapsing.

Planet Ayurveda offers 6 herbal remedies for the Ayurvedic treatment of this condition. Are there any alternative to surgery for Anal fistula?

Are there any alternative to surgery for Anal fistula

Anal fistula is an inflammatory tract between the skin and anal canal representing the chronic phase of ongoing perirectal sepsis.

Fistula-in-ano is prevalent all over the world and is considered second to hemorrhoids among all ano-rectal abnormalities.

Patients of anal fistula often complain a cyclical pattern of pain, drainage and swelling. The moisture causes skin irritation, excoriation and pruritis. This condition affects the quality of life significantly.

For chronic cases of anal fistula, surgery is recommended in modern medicine but the main problem in anal fistula after surgery is either incontinence or recurrences or both.

Master Sushrut has beautifully described the pathogenesis of this disorder. He quoted in the texts that when a person is indulged in unhealthy food and eating habits, Vata dosha in the body gets aggravated and localized in the anal canal. This aggravated Vata dosha further vitiates the blood and muscles giving rise to pitika (boils) and if this condition is not treated on time, the boils suppurate and burst which results in a discharging track known as "Bhagandar".

Master Charak has mentioned five types of Bhagandar. These are: Vataj, Pittaj, Kaphaj, Tridoshaj and Kshataj.

In Ayurveda, the treatment of Bhagandar according to the stage has been prescribed.

  1. In an un-ripen stage, one should follow the guidelines of wound management.
  2. If the boil has achieved the ripening stage, oleation and fomentation of the peri anal region should be practiced.

How can Scleroderma be treated?

how can scleroderma be treated

Scleroderma is a group of rare chronic skin diseases which causes tightening and hardening of connective tissues and skin. The severity of the disease varies in different individuals. In some, it may affect only skin while in others it involves deeper structures like internal organs, blood vessels, and digestive tracts. Signs and symptoms of scleroderma differ depending upon the part or structure involved. More often women are affected as compared to men. Pathogenesis of scleroderma involves abnormally increased production of a protein named collagen which is an important part of the skin. This occurs due to defective functioning of the immune system causing hardening of the skin along with other sign and symptoms.

The exact cause of this disease is unknown while abnormal functioning of the immune system plays an important role in the causation of Scleroderma. Some people are known to be genetically susceptible for this disorder and certain factors like exposure to the specific type of pesticides and solvents are believed commonly to trigger Scleroderma.

Signs and symptoms depend upon the system or organ of the body affected.

  • Skin- Most common symptom of this disease is hardening and tightening of the skin. This hardening is in the form of patches which may be shaped like straight lines, oval, or may cover large areas of the limbs and trunk. Location and number of patches vary according to the type of scleroderma one is suffering from. Due to the tightness of skin, it appears to be shiny and movement of the affected area is usually restricted.
  • Fingers or toes- Raynaud’s phenomenon is one of the earliest sign of Scleroderma. Raynaud’s phenomenon is characterized by changes in color, numbness, tingling, and pain in the fingers or toes due to the abnormal reaction of the body to cold temperature or stress. Raynaud’s phenomenon also affects the people who are not having scleroderma.
  • Digestive system- People with scleroderma have digestive troubles too like acid reflux and improper absorption of nutrients in the intestines.
  • Heart, lungs, and kidneys- In severe cases, there are patches on kidneys, lungs and blood vessels resulting in their improper functioning and may prove to be fatal.

It is difficult to diagnose scleroderma as there are multiple sign and symptoms mimicking other diseased conditions. A proper physical examination and medical history help a doctor to suggest a few specific blood tests which help in the diagnosis of this disease. These blood tests suggest an elevated level of antibodies. Other than this biopsy of the affected area is done which shows abnormalities in results.

  • Damage to fingertips tissues due to Raynaud’s phenomenon results in the formation of ulcers. In severe cases, gangrene can occur which ultimately requires surgical amputation of the part.
  • Pulmonary hypertension and reduction in lung function due to scarring of lung tissues.
  • When kidneys are affected, it results in an elevated level of protein in urine and increased blood pressure. Also, there can occur kidney failure in severe cases.
  • Scarring of the heart results in arrhythmias, pericarditis, and congestive heart failure.
  • Much tightening of the skin around the mouth makes it difficult to open the mouth and brushing teeth properly resulting in tooth decay.
  • Digestive problems like acid reflux, constipation, and difficulty in swallowing can be faced by the patients.
  • In men, it causes erectile dysfunction and in women, it results in painful and difficult intercourse due to decreased lubrication and constriction of the opening of the vagina.

Modern medicine system considers Scleroderma to be incurable and aims at symptomatic relief only. Medicines are given to dilate blood vessels, reduce stomach acid, suppress the immune system, prevent infections and relieve pain. In severe cases, even amputation and lung surgery is advised.

Planet Ayurveda offers Sclero Care Pack which is completely Ayurvedic and free from chemicals, preservatives, and additives. How Can Plantar Fasciitis Be Treated With Herbal Remedies?

plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common cause of pain in the bottom of the heel. This is the painful condition in which there occurs inflammation of the weblike, thick ligament which connects heel to the front of the foot, i.e. plantar fascia. Plantar fascia supports the arch of the foot and helps in walking. It is repetitive strain injury which affects walkers, runners, hikers and all others who stands for living like cashiers. People who work or run on a concrete or hard surface are at high risk of developing plantar fasciitis. There is a stabbing pain usually in the morning when the person steps out of bed. Continuous movement of the feet decreases the pain but returns if there is long-standing or sitting.

  • Pain on the heal bottom.
  • Some may get pain at the mid-foot area of the bottom.
  • One or both feet may be affected.
  • Pain may be sharp or dull in nature.
  • Pain radiating outward from the bottom of the foot or heal.

  • Structural defects in the foot like a high arch or flat feet.
  • Wearing soft sole shoes.
  • Poor support arch.

For the first step of diagnosis, you must visit a doctor who will evaluate the condition by physical examination. The doctor might push on the plantar fascia while you flexing the foot to check if the pain worsens. The pointing toe may ameliorate the pain. After this physical examination, your doctor may advise you to take some tests like MRI and X-ray to rule out any other cause of foot pain.

How Can Ayurveda Help To Treat CIDP? - Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy

How Can Ayurveda Help To Treat CIDP, Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a neurological disorder that leads to damaged sensory functions in the arms and legs. It also causes progressive weakness. In CIDP the immune system of the body attacks myelin sheath and starts destroying it. Myelin sheath is an insulating sheath which covers nerves and allows electrical impulses to pass quickly along the nerve cells. When this myelin covering is removed or damaged it results in slowing or loss of the electrical impulses. So the messages given from the brain do not reach the organ.

It is considered to be an autoimmune disease in which there is inflammation of the nerves due to the attack of the body's immune system. Due to this prolonged inflammation there occurs swelling on the nerve which destroys its covering.

Sign and symptoms are not the same for everyone suffering from CIDP. Some common symptoms are-

  1. Fatigue and weakness
  2. Numbness and pain in some areas
  3. Slowed or absent tendon reflexes
  4. Weakness of the arms and legs
  5. A sensation of pricking pins and needles

No, they both are not same disease condition but are very closely related. The similarity is that they both are the nerve disease and cause weakness and numbness. Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute inflammatory disease which affects peripheral nerves. CIDP is a chronic form of Guillain-Barre syndrome.

No particular test is there yet to diagnose a CIDP. There are particular criteria which help in diagnosing CIDP:

  • Progressive fatigue and weakness for at least two months.
  • Sensory symptoms.
  • Same sensory symptoms are present on both the arms and legs.
  • Both the muscles close one and the far one to the trunk are involved.
  • Less or no reflexes on the tapping of the knee, crooks of the rams, the elbows, wrist, and ankles.
  • Nerve biopsy revealing degeneration of myelin sheath.

CIDP is an autoimmune disease and according to Ayurveda, all the auto-immune diseases are caused due to ama, i.e non-digested food. Ama becomes attached to the myelin sheath of nerves and body's immune system tries to remove it. So this leads to the destruction of myelin sheath due to the attack of the immune system in order to separate ama. Pitta and Kapha dosha works behind it. Pitta being the regulator of the body's heat attack nerve covering which is controlled by Kapha.

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine which treats diseases by herbal medicines. These herbal medicines are made from pure and natural extract of various herbs. This is a natural and safe method of treatment. CIDP is a rare disease which is manageable if treatment is started timely. So, early intervention is necessary. Along with Ayurvedic medicines, there are some lifestyle differences which will help you to recover faster.

  1. Avoid coffee and take green tea.
  2. Do not take carbonated drinks.
  3. Do not smoke. If you are a regular smoker then quit smoking gradually as its sudden stoppage can cause withdrawal symptoms.
  4. Do not drink alcohol.
  5. Develop regularity in life, like in eating, sleeping, and exercise.
