How to remove tan naturally? - 10 Effective Home Remedies

WHAT IS TANNING?

Sun tanning or simply tanning is the process in which skin color is darkened or tanned. This is mostly due toexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight.

But sometimes tanning is also caused due to some sort of artificial sources, such as a tanning lamp found in indoor tanning beds. Some people use chemical products which can also produce an effect of tanning with no exposure to ultraviolet radiation, known as sunless tanning.

But most commonly, when the skin comes in the contact of UV radiations of the sun, then tanning happens.

In most cases, suntans are patchy and irregular, causing blemishes and dark spots as a result of skin damage. Prolonged skin damage is usually hard to treat, which is why it is important to try to prevent sun damage from occurring in the first place.

HOW TO RETAIN MEMORY?

In this busy lifestyle, everyone has moments of forgetfulness which is very frustrating.

There are various neurological impairments that can range from mild memory loss to disorders such as: Alzheimer's disease.

Many patients over 50 years of age are concerned about their memory deteriorating. There are certain factors that contribute to memory loss.

secret cure for memory loss in ayurveda

VARIOUS FACTORS THAT LEAD TO LOSS OF MEMORY ARE

  • Unhealthy eating habits such as diet high in sugars, refined flour, salt and saturated fat. This diet is deficient in major nutrients such as: B Vitamins.
  • Alcohol or drug abuse.
  • Lack of sleep
  • Intake of certain medications such as sleeping pills, anti-depressants.
  • Malnutrition such as lack of DHA.

DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) is a long chain omega 3 fatty acid and it is an integral part of neural membrane phospholipids such as it impacts brain structure and function. It contributes to the development of brain and eyes.

Omega 3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats responsible for memory as well as mental health.

There Are Two Types Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids:

  1. EPA
  2. DHA

Human body can make EPA and DHA from omega 3 known as Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA). The main sources of ALA are: walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, soybean oil etc.

HOW OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS AFFECT THE BRAIN?

Omega-3 fatty acids such as EPA and DHA are critical for normal brain functioning and its development throughout all stages of life.

  • In older adults, lower levels of DHA in the blood is associated with smaller brain size which is a sign of accelerated brain aging.
  • Low levels of DHA in the brain cause problems such as: dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss and other important mental functions.
  • DHA is taken up by the brain very fast as compared to other fatty acids. The turn-over of DHA in brain is very fast.
  • Decrease in DHA in the brain are associated with cognitive decline during aging and with the onset of sporadic Alzheimer disease.

WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF DHA?

  • DHA is the main structural fat in the body. It is involved in the functioning and development of CNS and synapses in the brain.
  • It can detect the oxidative stress or any other damage.
  • It promptly produces a compound known as Neuroprotectin D1 (NPD1). The function of NPD1 is to lower the inflammation in the hippocampus known as seat of memory.
  • DHA also activates pro-survival genes in the brain cells.
  • It also suppresses pro-death genes.
  • They are abundant in cell membranes of brain cells and preserve the cell membrane health and thus facilitate communication between brain cells.
  • It is essential for the growth and functional development of brain in infants.
  • It is also required for the maintenance of normal brain function in adults.

So, it is advised to get at least 600 mg of DHA and 400 mg of EPA daily.

WHAT ARE THE NATURAL SOURCES OF DHA?

  1. Flaxseeds: Flaxseeds are the rich source of Omega 3 fatty acids. These seeds are also rich in many other nutrients such as magnesium, zinc, Vitamin E, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and protein.
  2. Walnuts: Walnuts are the rich source of Omega 3 fatty acids, anti-oxidants, vitamins, calcium, protein and fat. Walnuts increase memory, fight against depression, prevent cancer and improve cardio-vascular health.
  3. Chia Seeds (Saliva hispanica): Now a days, it has become a popular super food. It is a powerhouse of nutrients as well as easy to digest. It is one of the best sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. It also contains fiber, calcium, magnesium, Vitamin E and other micro-nutrients. Chia seeds are also useful in improving cardio-vascular health.
  4. Soybeans: Soybeans are the rich sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. They are also a rich source of folate, potassium, magnesium and other Vitamins. They are a rich source of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.
  5. Mustard Seeds: 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds contains 100 milligrams of omega 3 fatty acids. They are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and thus have the ability to boost metabolism.

treatment of graves' disease in ayurveda, graves' disease treatment in ayurveda, treatment of graves' disease in ayurveda

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF GRAVES' DISEASE?

Graves' disease is caused by the malfunctioning of the body's immune system. In Graves' disease, the body produces an antibody to one part of the cells in the thyroid gland.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF GRAVES' OPHTHALMOPATHY?

The antibody that causes thyroid dysfunction may also have an attraction to the tissues surrounding the eyes. This condition results due to the build-up of certain carbohydrates in the muscles and tissues behind the eyes.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF GRAVES' DISEASE?

Common signs and symptoms of Graves' Disease include:

  • Enlarged thyroid
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Tremors in hands or fingers
  • Despite normal eating habits, there is loss in weight.
  • Goiter i.e. enlargement of thyroid gland
  • Heat sensitivity
  • Moist skin
  • Changes in menstrual cycle in women
  • Fatigue
  • Rapid or irregular heart beat
  • Graves' ophthalmopathy (bulging eyes). In Graves' ophthalmopathy, there is inflammation and impairment in the immune system that affects the muscles and other tissues around the eyes.

The resulting signs and symptoms due to graves' opthalmopathy include:

  • Bulging eyes
  • Pressure or pain in the eyes
  • Puffy or retracted eye lids
  • Gritty sensation in the eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Double vision
  • Vision loss

WHAT IS THE AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE OF GRAVES' DISEASE?

  • In Ayurvedic system of medicine, the emphasis is not given on naming the disease. It rather insists on understanding the constitutional status of the disease and adopting an appropriate treatment principle.
  • The pathophysiology of Graves' disease lies in the concept of agni. Agni plays a prominent role in the body as vitiation of doshas depend on the vitiation of Agni. That's why, for bringing doshas in the balanced state, treatment for correcting of agni is done.
  • According to Ayurveda, Graves' disease has the symptoms of increased Vata and Pitta dosha. The Vata symptoms include nervousness, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, palpitations, bulging of the eye balls whereas Pitta symptoms include heat intolerance, excessive hunger, sweating, irritability, emotional disturbances, changes in menstrual cycle, fatigue etc.
  • The gastro-intestinal symptoms of Graves' disease resemble the features of atyagni (intense digestive fire) as mentioned by Master Charak.
  • The state of kayagni (digestive fire), bhutagni (fire of five elements) and dhatwagni (fire of seven tissue elements) are very important.
  • Dhatwagni is considered as a part of kayagni and is located in dhatus. Increase of dhatwagni will lead to dhatu vriddhi (increased tissue elements).
  • Person will lose weight in hyperthyroidism due to increased dhatwagni which causes Dhatu kshaya.

Reference: Astanga Hridaya Sutrasthan, Chapter 11, Shlok No. 32 & 33

Meaning: According to this shloka, kayagni is present in dhatus also. It's decrease in qualities, functions or quantities give rise to increase or decrease of dhatus. The proceeding dhatu which is either increased or decreased gives rise to the succeeding dhatu of the same condition.

Treatment of Asbestosis in Ayurveda?

Asbestosis is defined as a chronic disease of the lungs which is caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers. Scarring of lung tissue occurs on prolonged exposure to asbestos fibers resulting in shortness of breath and many other symptoms. These symptoms may be either mild or severe varying in every patient depending upon the duration of exposure to these particles. Usually, signs and symptoms do not appear until exposure lasts for several years.

Asbestos is a group of minerals which are made from microscopic fibers, breathing them in damages the lungs and can even cause cancer. This mineral is resistant to corrosion and heat. Now it has become infamous due to its menace caused on human health but earlier it was widely used in cement, insulation and floor tiles. So at that time people who were working in these industries suffered from asbestosis which raised an alarm in the public and government regulations and controlled its use. Handling of asbestosis is strictly regulated by the government nowadays but studies suggest that still approximately 125 million people all around the world are exposed to asbestosis. Exposure to asbestos particles first cause asbestosis and if not treated or maltreated can result in mesothelioma, i.e. cancer which affects the lining of lung, heart, and stomach.

Treatment of Asbestosis in Ayurveda, Ayurvedic Treatment for Asbestosis

WHAT CAN BE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ASBESTOSIS?

Continued exposure to asbestos particle causes scarring of the lungs resulting in difficulty for lungs to expand and improper exchange of air. This pathology results in a certain group of signs and symptoms.

  • Shortness of breath
  • Continuous dry cough
  • Pain and tightness in the chest
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite and weight
  • Crackling sound during breathing
  • Clubbing, i.e. the abnormal appearance of rounder and wider toes and fingertips

WHAT CAN BE THE CAUSE OF ASBESTOSIS?

Normally there are small sacs in the lungs, i.e. alveoli, where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs. In case of long exposure to these asbestos particles, these particles get lodged in the alveoli, preventing the normal respiratory exchange. Gradually these fibers irritate the alveoli in which they have been lodged and cause scarring of that, resulting in difficult breathing.

As this disease progresses, a wider portion of the lungs get scarred causing stiffness in the lungs and preventing normal breathing. Cigarettes smoking increases asbestos particles absorption, further quickening the progression of asbestosis.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR ASBESTOSIS?

  • Working in asbestos industries
  • Mining asbestos
  • Boiler operators
  • Railroad workers
  • Electricians
  • Workers of shipyard
  • Workers removing the insulation of asbestos in older buildings present around the pipes

WHAT IS THE AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE FOR ASBESTOSIS?

The deposition of the harmful particles such as asbestos in the lungs eventually results in mesothelioma (Cancer). According to Ayurveda cancer is divided into two types granthi, i.e. minor tumor and arbuda, i.e. major tumor. Cancer is said to be developed when control systems of the body are out of balance. This body system is none other than many known doshas, i.e. Vata, Pitta, and Kapha Dosha. Now in case of mesothelioma, outer force asbestos causes an imbalance in these doshas.

vata, respiratory diseases, ancient reference, shloka

Meaning- When Vata dosha gets aggravated it obstructs the various channels of the body resulting in obstruction of the passages of Vayu. It causes respiratory diseases.

Treatment of Psoriasis in Ayurveda

Psoriasis, a skin disease which is inflammatory and autoimmune, characterized by skin lesions that give an ugly look to our personality. This is a disease which is not limited or confined to our integumentary system. It shows its effects on various other systems like – respiratory, locomotory, etc. Overall psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease which is represented with well- defined erythematous plaques with large, adherent and silvery scales. The basic reason for psoriasis is our unhealthy diet, lifestyle and overactive immune system.

Treatment of Psoriasis in Ayurveda

Still the present medical sciences are struggling to rule out the etiology and treatment of psoriasis. But Ayurveda an age-old system of medicine has the potential to cure this disease by means of natural ways.

WHAT CAUSES PSORIASIS?

The exact cause is not known but there are some factors that are responsible for its causation.

Aaharaj Karana (Dietary Factors)

Excessive consumption of spicy, sour, pungent, hot, oily foodstuffs, baked, fermented and packaged food items, non- vegetarian diet etc. are responsible for this condition. Some wrong and improper combinations like - fish and milk, salt and milk, citrus foods and milk, vegetables and milk are considered as 'Virudha ahara". If an individual who is taking these food items together then the person would definitely be going to end up with the skin problems.

Viharaj Karana (Lifestyle)

Excessively indulging in some activities like – exposure to sunlight, hot wind, sleeping in day time, awakening at night time, and leading a sedentary lifestyle can cause vitiation in our vital energies i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Mansik karana (Mental status)

Excessive stress and strains can cause hormonal imbalance in our body. As hormones are responsible for all the functions in our body, any variation in them can lead to skin diseases.

Vanshaj Karana (Hereditary Factors)

Psoriasis is also one among the hereditary problems which run in generations.

Vyadhikshamatva (Immune System)

Mostly the weak immune system is the cause of diseases but in case of psoriasis our immune system due to some wrong signals is unable to recognize the healthy tissues and destructs them.

Anya Karana (Some Other Factors)

  • Occupational hazards – Those who are working in an area where they have to expose to some chemicals, certain gases, radiations etc. are prone to develop skin problems
  • Medications – Long term use of steroids affects our immune system.
  • Certain habits like drinking and smoking are also the causative factors.
  • Chemicals in cosmetics can react in such a manner that they erode the skin, further they develop infections.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The common signs and symptoms of psoriasis are –

  • Discoloration of skin
  • Flake formation
  • Scaly lesions
  • Reduced sensation on the affected part.
  • Associated with itching, pain, dryness, burning sensation and swelling.
  • As other systems are also involved in this disease so a person may develop cough, joint pains etc.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF PSORIASIS (KUSHTHA)

As per Ayurveda psoriasis is one among Kushtha roga which is a "Pitta pradhana tridoshaj vyadhi". Our scholars stated that our unwholesome diet, lifestyle, genetic factors and behavior are the reasons for the development of this disease.

Especially the unwholesome diet that is mentioned in our classics which if taken in excess definitely going to develop the skin diseases. The quotation goes as -

ancient reference

Reference – Charaka samhita / Chikitsa sthana / Kushtha chikitsa / Chapter no. 7 / Shloka no. 7

The meaning of this shloka goes as - excessive consumption of newly harvested grains, curd, fish, salt, black gram, radish, fermented foods, jaggery, milk, sesame, etc are the foods that make an individual prone to develop skin disorder like psoriasis.

Another reason for psoriasis is wrong utilization of Panchakarma therapies (branch of Ayurveda) which can make the body susceptible to kushtha.

The pathogenesis of kustha goes as –

ancient reference

Reference – Charaka samhita / Chikitsa sthana / Kushtha chikitsa / Chapter no. 7 / Shloka no. 9

Meaning: The vitiated tridoshas get localized and vitiate our twak (skin), rakta (blood), lasika (lymph), mamsa (muscles) and reflect the response in form of discolored lesions on the skin which is kushtha (Psoriasis). Moreover, these 7 factors are responsible for the production of skin lesions in our body.

PROPERTIES OF TERMINALIA ARJUNA

As per Ayurveda, this quotation defines the properties of the herb Arjuna.

Health benefits of Terminalia arjuna

Reference: Bhava Prakasha Nighantu / Vatadi Varga / Shloka no. 27

Arjuna is also called as kakumbha, it is astringent in taste, cold in potency, act as a cardiac tonic, and also useful in various diseases such as tuberculosis, blood disorders, diabetes, alleviates adipose deposition, manages kapha and pitta disorders and even promotes the faster wound healing.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

This herb contains the active contents – calcium carbonate, tannins, glycosides, sodium and even traces of chlorides, etc.

Basically, Arjuna has the following qualities: Cardiac protective and stimulant, Antihyperglycemic, Anti-hypertensive, Wound healing, Anti-ischemic, Anti-atherogenic, Antihyperlipidemic, Anti-thrombotic, Antihemorrhagic, etc. Hence, beneficial in treating various heart problems.

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF TERMINALIA ARJUNA IN CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE?

As discussed earlier, Arjuna is a cardiac tonic hence plays a major role in dealing with all the problems related to the heart. In the case of Coronary artery disease (CAD) the blood flow to the heart muscles get reduced or hampered which commonly occurs due to plaque formation in the arteries of the heart. This develops various consequences in the body such as angina, myocardial infarction, sudden cardiac arrest, heart failure, etc. To deal with all these things Arjuna is an herb of choice. Moreover, there are various risk factors that can develop this problem like obesity, hypertension, high blood cholesterol, etc. This herb is also beneficial to manage these risk factors as well as complications.

Alleviates Cholesterol Level

Terminalia arjuna directly acts on ‘Meda dhatu’ in the body that means it alleviates the fat deposition. In subtle form Cholesterol is also a derivative of fatty acid. Here, indirectly fats can be considered as a low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Because of its bitter, pungent, and astringent taste, it cuts off the growth of plaques in the arteries or even dissolves and digest them from the blood stream as a toxin (ama).

Anti-hypertensive

This herb is cold in potency and can manage pita dosha in our body and reduces the tension of blood against the arteries and manages blood pressure. Basically, it is due to the anti-hyperlipidemic property.

Thrombolytic Agent

Any clot in the arteries if developed, can be easily managed by the use of Arjuna bark. Moreover, this herb has an anti-thrombotic property which clears the channels of coronary arteries.

Cardiac Stimulant

Being a cardiac stimulant, Terminalia arjuna stimulates the functions of the heart. Maintains the ejection fraction of the heart thereby maintains the proper blood supply to the cardiac muscles and prevents coronary vascular diseases.

Cardiac Tonic

This herb is full of antioxidants hence prevents the body from free radical damage. It acts as a cardiac protector hence provides strength to the heart. It maintains the normal structure as well as the function of the heart.

Maintains The Health Of Cardiac Vessels

Anti-atherogenic property of Arjuna helps to maintain the tonicity of the blood vessels. Maintains the consistent and rhythmic flow of blood to all the major as well as minor arteries.

Reduces Inflammation

Due to its anti-inflammatory property it can reduce the inflammation of the heart and blood vessels. It also eliminates the extra accumulated fluid in the cardiac region due to its anulomaka property. Thus it manages the coronary heart problem by balancing the kapha and pitta dosha in the body.

Heals The Wound

Due to the presence of kashaya (astringent) taste it has Vrana ropak property. It can heal the lumen or inner layers of the arteries which are usually eroded during the extraction of plaques.

Planet Ayurveda offers various products containing Terminalia arjuna for management of coronary artery diseases. They offer "Heart Care Pack". This pack includes:

How air pollution can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases?

Currently, the problem of today's era is pollution that may be either air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, and so on. The problem of pollution has increased within a few years and affected the individual grossly, worldwide. The pollutants in the environment produce various hazards for humans as well as for other species. Nowadays, air pollution have become the cause of the death of various lives. The pollutants can be in gaseous, solid particles or liquid forms. Mostly carbon monoxide, sulfuric oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, ammonia, etc. And the major cause of these pollution are human beings themselves such as over exploitation of natural resources.

air pollution, cardiovascular diseases, increase the risk

Breathing is a vital function of the body without which we can't survive. During respiration we are inhaling the number of pollutants that accumulates in the body and develop various side effects. These pollutants directly affect the respiratory system and the Cardio Vascular System as inhaled pollutants enter in the lungs and through that into bloodstream i.e enters into cardio vascular system.

Cardiovascular system is a major system in the body on which each and every tissue and organ is dependent because they get nourishment through the blood. This system is highly susceptible to develop various problems. Moreover, air pollution exacerbates the existing heart diseases.

WHAT ARE THE CARDIOVASCULAR PROBLEMS THAT DEVELOP DUE TO AIR POLLUTION?

The cardiovascular issues that arise due to air pollution are -

  • Breathlessness – The first and the foremost symptom of the cardiovascular diseases is breathlessness. This happens due to increased load of the pollutants in the blood stream.
  • Angina – Cardiac pain may arise due to over load of the toxins in the blood stream that obstructs the proper supply of the blood to the heart muscles.
  • Arrhythmia – Irregular heart rhythm that arises due to irregular pumping of the heart i.e sometimes heart beats very fast or very slow.
  • Stroke – Air pollution is not the direct cause stroke but it acts as a predisposing factor that triggers the stroke.
  • Hypertension – Often air pollution is a precursor for high blood pressure.

WHAT ARE THE MEASURES TO AVERT CARDIOVASCULAR PROBLEMS DUE TO AIR POLLUTION?

  • Use masks, whenever exposing to external environment.
  • Avoid exposure to highly polluted areas.

Hypertension and its management in Ayurveda

In the present times, life has become easy for the man due to modernization but man has also paid for it by becoming prey to many lifestyle disorders. These factors have an impact on the mind as well as homeostasis of the body and lead to many lifestyle disorders such as hypertension, diabetes etc.

As per the World Health Organization (WHO) report, about 40% of the people aged more than 25 years are suffering from hypertension. It is a most potent risk factor for diseases of the heart, brain, kidneys, and peripheral arteries if not managed timely. It is a silent killer as 85% of the patients who have high blood pressure are asymptomatic.

For its management, reducing body weight, healthy lifestyle, quitting smoking, increasing physical exercise are commonly recommended by the physicians.

Hypertension Management in Ayurveda

WHAT IS THE CONCEPT OF BLOOD PRESSURE IN AYURVEDA?

The oxygenated blood that is ejected out of the heart firstly which is distributed throughout the body and simultaneously the deoxygenated blood returns back to the heart via blood vessels. This return of blood towards the heart is controlled by Vata especially Samana Vata.

Master Charaka has clearly described that Vyana Vata, sub-dosha of Vata dosha constantly forces the blood out of the heart and distributes it throughout the body. Thus, it can be concluded that systolic blood pressure which is attained during the contraction of the heart is controlled by Vyana Vata.

The rate of its pulse generation is controlled by the autonomic nervous system via sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibres emerging from the brain. It is the Prana Vata that is situated in the brain and does dhamani dharana (arterial perpetuation). Thus, systolic blood pressure is controlled by Vyana Vata and Prana Vata and they control circulation. In general, Vata controls all the neural mechanisms.

shloka, ancient reference, vyana vata, vyana vata is located in the heart

Reference: Astang Hridayam Sutrasthanam, Chapter No. 12, Shloka No. 6-7

Meaning: Vyana Vata is located in the heart, it speedily moves throughout the body, performs functions such as flexion and extension, opening and closing of eye lids etc. All the activities in the body are regulated by Vyana Vata.

The diastole is attained when the heart muscles relax which occurs when the blood flows through the narrow vessels of the heart and arteries and there is no active push by the heart. Thus, diastolic BP can be considered under the domain of Kapha dosha especially Avalambaka Kapha.

The auto-rhythmicity of the heart is due to the action potential created by the rapid influx of Na+ and Ca++ ions and the efflux of K+ ions across the membranes of SA Node. This mechanism is controlled by Pitta dosha, mainly Sadhaka Pitta situated in the heart.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE?

Most people with high blood pressure have no symptoms even if blood pressure readings have reached high levels.

Some Of The Symptoms Of High Blood Pressure Are:

  • Headache
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nosebleeds

These signs and symptoms are not specific and not every patient might have them.

HYPERTENSION AND ITS MANAGEMENT IN AYURVEDA

Some natural remedies help to stabilize the blood pressure and keep the heart healthy.

Some of the home remedies for the management of Hypertension are:

1. Orange Juice and Coconut Water

These are the good source of potassium. Coconut water reduces the systolic pressure and supports the functioning of cardiac muscles. Mix fresh orange juice with fresh coconut water in the ratio 2:1. Drink ½-1 cup of this juice 2-3 times a day for the treatment of high blood pressure.

2. Watermelon Seeds

An amino acid present in the watermelon seeds lowers the vascular resistance hence helps in lowering down the blood pressure.

Roast 10 gm. watermelon seeds and grind them. Add this powder to the 2 cups of water and boil this mixture for about 10-15 minutes. Strain the liquid and consume twice daily in the morning and evening.

3. Bananas

High salt or sodium in the diet can raise blood pressure. Consume bananas in the diet as they are the rich source of potassium. Potassium counters the ill-effects of excessive sodium in the diet.

4. Pomegranate Juice

Fresh pomegranate juice is also quite effective for the treatment of high blood pressure. It is a rich source of polyphenols which are considered as a rich source of anti-oxidants. It reduces high blood pressure and improves the blood flow to the arteries.

Single Herbs That Are Recommended In The Management Of Hypertension Are:

1. Lasuna (Allium sativum)

It is quite effective in lowering the blood pressure especially the systolic part as it contains compounds that are rich in sulphur. These sulphur containing compounds acts on the nitric oxide which relaxes the arteries and lowers the systolic blood pressure.

2. Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna)

Arjuna acts as a best cardiac tonic. This herb corrects the disturbances in circulation and also alleviates stress.

3. Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina)

Sarpagandha is considered as a hypotensive plant. It contains alkaloids such as reserpine but it should be used under medical supervision.

4. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

It is a wonderful herb that provides strength to the muscles of the heart, relieves stress and acts as a rejuvenator.

5. Amalaki (Emblica officinalis)

This wonderful fruit has immense health benefits because of its rich anti-oxidant properties. Regular use of Amla helps in improving the overall functioning of the heart and reduces cholesterol levels as well.

According to Ayurveda, avoiding the etiological factors of the disease is the first line of management.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Sebaceous Cyst

Sebaceous glands are the exocrine glands that secrete the sebum beneath the skin. In Latin, sebum is called as fat or tallow which is a waxy substance that contains triglycerides, waxy esters, metabolites, etc.It helps to lubricate the skin and hair. These glands are abundantly present over the face and scalp but also on other parts except soles and palms. Moreover, there are two types of sebaceous glands, one that is directly connected to the base of hair follicles and the other that exists independently. Meibomian glands (eye glands) and areolar glands (surrounded the nipples) are also the types of sebaceous glands. When the path of the secretion of glands get obstructed or clogged, the sebum starts to deposit over there and forms an elevated swelling beneath the skin that is nothing but a sebaceous cyst. The collected material inside the cysts contains sebum and a few debris.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Sebaceous Cyst, epidermoid cyst

WHAT AYURVEDA SAYS ABOUT THE SEBACEOUS CYST?

Master Sushruta "The Father Of Surgery" stated that the vitiated tridoshas get localized in dhatus especially, in the mamsa and medadhatuthat in turn obstruct the channels and give rise to an elevated swelling or growth which is termed as a cyst or 'granthi'. If this cyst occurs in the sebaceous glands and in its path, is called as a sebaceous cyst.

Reference – Sushrutasamhita / nidaanstahana/ chapter no. 11/ shloka no.3

Basically, the sebaceous cyst is Kapha Pradhan.

CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF A SEBACEOUS CYST

  • Color – As that of skin color
  • Odor – Exudate has foul smell
  • Surface – Usually has a smooth surface
  • Shape – Varies in shape and structure
  • Size – Varies in size
  • Location – Profusely on the face, neck and torso.

WHAT CAUSES SEBACEOUS CYSTS?

  • Obstructionor blocked channels (ducts) is the main cause of sebaceous cysts.
  • Overactive sebaceous glands.
  • Sometimes these cysts are inherited
  • Weak immune system.
  • Trauma or injury on the skin
  • A diet that obstructs the channels is a major culprit for this cyst.
  • Environmental and climatic changes like excessive exposure to dust and mists can obstruct the hair follicles and may develop a sebaceous cyst.
  • Unhygienic conditions can give rise to a sebaceous cyst

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SEBACEOUS CYSTS?

  • A protrusion or a lump under the skin.
  • Usually, lumps are painless but sometimes due to the inflammation they become tender.
  • Surrounded skin will be red and warm on touch.
  • The discharge of the cyst appears greyish–white in color which resembles like – cheese.
  • Usually, the cysts are mobile.
  • Mostly, they grow slowly.

DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA

On the clinical basis we can diagnose the sebaceous cyst but just to avoid risk, we can go for some investigations to rule out the growth. Some investigations that are helpful, they are -

  • Computed tomography.
  • Biopsy.
  • Nuclear imaging.

MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

  1. Avoiding the root cause.
  2. Detoxification of the body.
  3. Measures to restrict the growth by means of Shaman chikitsa.
  4. Enhancing immunity.
  5. Diet and lifestyle modifications.

TREATMENT

These cysts can be effectively managed by the use of natural herbo-mineral combinations. Planet Ayurveda offers various formulations that can resolve the growth of cysts, maintain the sebum production and cleanse the blocked ducts. Planet Ayurveda's medicines are completely pure, free from chemicals, additives and fillers, moreover they are prepared from the standard extracts of herbs.
