Ayurvedic Treatment for Generalised epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+)

Generalised epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+) is an unusual, inherited epilepsy syndrome which comprises a range of seizure disorders with varying severity. In other words, this condition can be described as a syndromic autosomal dominant disorder in which several epilepsy phenotypes can be exhibited by the afflicted individuals.

Generalised epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+) characteristically causes febrile seizures and spontaneous seizures which can mostly be managed with the help of traditional antiepileptic drug therapy. The condition is typically associated with families in which several members belonging to different generations suffer from different types of epileptic seizures and probably even various epilepsy syndromes.

The wide-ranging epilepsy phenotypes exhibited by patients suffering from GEFS+ include febrile seizures (which are caused by a high fever, and generally occur from infancy up to the age of 6 years); and other types of recurrent seizures (epilepsy), including afebrile seizures (which are not linked to fever). In addition, some of the other epilepsy seizures which may extend beyond 6 years of age include myoclonic seizures (which cause involuntary twitching of muscles); absence seizures (which cause ‘staring spells’ or a brief loss of consciousness); and atonic seizures (which involve ‘drop attacks’ or occasional incidents of weakened muscle tone).

The description of GEFS+ as an epilepsy syndrome in its own right is a fairly recent development. As a result of the categorization of GEFS+ as an epilepsy syndrome, there are now three epilepsy disorders which are grouped under this condition:

  • SMEI (Severe myoclonic epilepsy of infancy or Dravet's syndrome)
  • SMEB (borderline SMEI)
  • IEC (Intractable epilepsy of childhood).

The commonly-perceived cause of Generalised epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+) is: mutations (faults) in the sodium channel α subunit gene SCN1A.

Besides the SCN1A gene, there are some other genes which are also considered as the causative genes for the extremely complex GEFS+ disorder. These genes include: sodium channel β subunit gene SCN1B; a GABAA receptor γ subunit gene; the GABRG2 gene; and the PCDH19 gene related with calcium channel.

Overall, there are more than 20 different gene mutations which have been identified in the patients of GEFS+ and their family members.

For establishing the diagnosis of Generalised epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+), doctors carefully examine the family history of the patients who suffer from febrile seizures beyond 6 years of age.

The examination of the family history or hereditary connection of GEFS+ patients also involves the doctor’s interaction with the closest family members of the patients. Doctors specifically talk to the patient’s grandparents because they may have some memory of their children or their nephews/nieces having suffered from febrile convulsions or other kinds of epilepsy seizures in childhood.

Moreover, for ascertaining the genetic link of GEFS+, the doctors may also require the patients to undergo a simple blood test which can be helpful in determining a number of small genetic abnormalities that are usually found in families afflicted with GEFS+.

For the management of Generalised epilepsy with febrile seizures plus (GEFS+) in the long-term, doctors generally prescribe the use of anticonvulsant medications to the patients who exhibit febrile seizures. Patients who suffer from other seizures which are not associated with a high fever may be prescribes epilepsy medicines by the doctors.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Pleomorphic Adenoma - Types, Signs, Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Herbal Remedies

pleomorphic adenoma, ayurvedic treatment

Pleomorphic Adenoma is a rare type of tumor in the salivary gland. This tumor is very common and can develop in any salivary gland- mouth, neck or throat. These glands form the saliva which further supports digestion, keeps the mouth moist and supports healthy teeth. Most of the times, tumors that form on the glands are noncancerous but the tumors on the salivary gland are malignant. It is in the form of an asymptomatic painless mass that grows gradually.

We have many tiny salivary glands on the lips, inside cheeks, and mouth and throat. There are three main salivary glands under and behind the jaw — Parotid, Sublingual and Submandibular.

Parotid gland is the salivary gland in which most tumors occur. Nearly 25 percent of parotid tumors are cancerous.

  • A lump or swelling on or near the jaw or in your throat or mouth.
  • Pain in one area of the face, mouth or neck
  • Numbness in some part of your face
  • There is a noticeable difference in the shape or size of the right and the left sides of the face.
  • Muscle weakness on either side of the face
  • Persistent pain in the area of a salivary gland
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Trouble opening your mouth wide.

  • Salivary gland cancer happens when some cells in a salivary gland develop certain abnormal changes.
  • Failure to adequately drain saliva resulting from obstructed salivary glandular duct system.
  • Tobacco smoking and exposure to harmful radiations.
  • The mutations allow the cells to grow and divide rapidly.
  • The mutated cells continue living while other cells die.
  • The accumulated cells form a tumor that might attack the nearby tissue. Cancerous cells can break off and spread in different parts of the body.

  • Older age:  Salivary gland tumors occur at any age, but more in older adults in comparison to other age groups.
  • Radiation exposure: If gone through any radiation treatment for head and neck cancers, increases the risk of salivary gland tumors.
  • Workplace exposure to certain substances: Working in a rubber manufacturing, asbestos mining and plumbing increases the chances for salivary cancer.
  • Consumption of alcohol and smoking, or chewing tobacco
  • Diet: High consumption of animal fat but very poor intake of vegetables and fruits.
  • Genetics or hereditary factors

  • A physical exam. Lumps or swelling felt on jaw, neck and throat.
  • Imaging tests.  MRI and CT scan may help the doctor determine the size and location of the salivary gland tumor.
  • Collection of a sample of tissue for testing.  Test of tissues through tissue biopsy.

Ayurveda believes the body is controlled and governed by the three energies or the doshas. If there is any disorder and disturbance in the body the doshas -Vata, Pitta, Kapha are responsible for it. The Ayurvedic treatment includes balancing the aggravated dosha by herbs and herbs are the nature's best gift to the mankind.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Azotemia - Types, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Herbal Remedies & Diet

Azotemia is a condition when the kidneys are unable to get rid of enough nitrogen wastes and they get build up in the blood. The kidneys are damaged due to some disease or an injury and so they are not able to filter the blood properly.

Azotemia is defined as an increase in urea nitrogen and creatinine. It is a type of nephrotoxicity.

1. Prerenal Azotemia

Prerenal azotemia is the most common type of azotemia and can be reversed. This condition occurs when something that is affecting the blood circulation affects the kidney function and the fluid doesn’t flow enough through the kidneys. For example when there is low blood pressure to the kidney or due to irregular heart function, the kidney is unable to filter out the waste products or make urine. This leads to high levels of concentration of serum creatinine and urea. Other reasons that may cause reduced blood flow to the kidney are burns, dehydration, hemorrhage, long term vomiting or diarrhea, too much exposure to heat, shock or any blockage of the artery that supplies blood to the kidneys.

2. Intrarenal Azotemia

Intrarenal azotemia is also known as acute renal failure or acute kidney injury. It is attributed to the problem with the kidney itself like infections, sepsis or disease of kidney. The most common type of intrinsic azotemia or intrinsic renal failure is acute tubular necrosis. In this case, there is excess nitrogen in the blood due to side effects of certain medications like antibiotics, anti-fungal drugs, chemotherapy, bigological therapies etc. It can be due to diabetes also.

3. Postrenal Azotemia

Postrenal azotemia happens due to obstruction of urinary tract leading to renal failure. It can occur along with prerenal azotemia. It happens when there is a blockage in the urinary system like stones, tumors, infections, urinary catheter, urinary crystals or enlarged prostate gland.

Azotemia is common in people aged between 45 to 65 years.

Long term diarrhea, vomiting, bleeding can also lead to azotemia.

  • Painful urination which can be infrequent and decreased in quantity
  • Discoloration or urine and pale skin
  • Muscle weakness and fatigue or loss of energy and fast pulse rate
  • Fever, chills, nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite along with feeling of dry mouth
  • Confusion
  • Peripheral edema or fluid retention
  • Acute kidney injury and acute renal failure

Azotemia is diagnosed by urine and blood tests. The tests are done to check the urea nitrogen and creatinine levels.

The doctor takes complete medical history of the patient and record the medications, past infections and symptoms. He does physical exam too. At times, ultrasound and x rays may also be performed. A catheter may also be inserted into the urethra to investigate.

Treatment of Azotemia focuses on correcting the cause of the imbalance before the kidneys become damaged.

According to Ayurveda, kidneys are made from "Rakta" and "Meda" dhatus so these need to be treated in order to manage the symptoms of Azotemia. Ayurvedic medicines helps in chronic renal failure. The treatment helps in reducing the need for dialysis and reversing the kidney damage.

Planet Ayurveda offers a complete and effective treatment for Azotemia in the form of following powerful medicines:

Ayurvedic Treatment for Cervical Lymph Nodes - Categories, Symptoms, Causes & Herbal Remedies

Cervical lymph nodes are the lymph nodes -- or small glands -- which are located in the neck region. These lymph nodes, nearly 300 in number, are an important part of the lymphatic system which a component of the human immune system.

The lymphatic system comprises nodes and vessels -- called lymphoid tissues -- which are located at different parts of the body. There are a total of around 800 lymph nodes in the body. These lymph nodes basically filter the lymph, that is, the clear fluid which circulates through the lymphatic system.

The nodes and vessels comprising the lymphatic system are basically responsible for offering protection to the body against infections. For this purpose, the lymphatic system delivers ‘lymphocytesor immune cells to those parts of the body where the immune response has been triggered.

Cervical lymph nodes found in the neck are subject to several pathological conditions including inflammation, infections, tumours and immune disorders.

Generally, cervical lymph nodes can be categorized into two groups: Anterior cervical lymph nodes and Posterior cervical lymph nodes.

The Anterior cervical lymph nodes are located under the chin (submental nodes) and the jawline (submaxillary or tonsillar nodes), while the Posterior cervical lymph nodes are located along the back of the neck.

On the basis of the position of Anterior cervical lymph nodes near the structures of the throat, the nodes which are located further down the front of the neck are divided into four categories --- Prelaryngeal lymph nodes (located in front of the larynx or voice box); Thyroid lymph nodes (located close to the thyroid gland); Pretracheal lymph nodes (located in front of the trachea or windpipe); and Paratracheal lymph nodes (located near the sides of the trachea).

Furthermore, the Cervical lymph nodes which are located next to the internal jugular vein that runs near the sides of the neck are Deep cervical lymph nodes, and are categorised as lateral jugular, anterior jugular, and jugulo-digastric lymph nodes.

Swelling of the lymph nodes is a fairly common condition which usually is caused by exposure to bacteria or viruses; for example, those which cause the common cold. However, in some rare cases, swollen lymph nodes can be an indication of a serious health condition.

The main reasons for the swelling of lymph nodes are illness, stress, or infection. Some of the illnesses or infections which can potentially lead to swollen lymph nodes in the neck and head include:

  • Common cold or flu
  • Ear infection

Ayurvedic Treatment for DPN Disease (Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra)

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) is a skin condition characterized by the occurrence of small, benign lesions on the face -- especially around the cheekbone, forehead and under the eyes -- and also on the neck, chest, and back. These lesions are also sometimes known as ‘flesh moles,’ even though they are not actually moles.

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra mostly affects dark-skinned people rather than fair-skinned ones. Particularly, these benign lesions appear in Blacks and dark-skinned; and are more likely to occur in females as compared to males. These lesions usually appear in teenage years; and their size and number increases with age, thereby worsening the condition. The size of these spots is generally between 1mm and 5mm.

The small skin lesions which mark the occurrence of Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra usually look like black or brown spots (or papules) which are either flat in appearance or hang off the skin like skin tags. Some people affected by this condition have a few, isolated black/brown spots, while others have hundreds of spots on certain parts of the skin.

If a person affected by Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra has less than 10 papules on the skin, the condition is considered ‘Mild;’ if the number of papules is between 10 and 50, the condition is considered ‘Moderate; and if the number of papules is more than 50, the condition is considered ‘Severe.’

The exact cause of the occurrence of Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra is not known. However, it is believed that the condition occurs either due to the improper development of the pilosebaceous follicle or it is associated with a genetic predisposition. According to research, nearly 50 percent of the people affected by Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra have a family history of the condition.

The skin lesions which appear in people affected by Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra are non-cancerous growths which are not a cause of concern from the medical perspective. However, these lesions are cosmetically undesired, and they may sometimes cause itchiness or irritation. As such, some patients may choose to have these lesions removed.

The common treatment options for Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra are: shave excision, scissor excision, dermabrasion, laser removal, curettage, cryosurgery, and electrodessication. These treatment options may lead to some potential complications like scarring of the skin, postoperative skin discoloration or keloid formation.

Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) levels and its effect in fertility of females

'AMH' is an acronym for 'Anti-Mullerian Hormone' which is produced directly by the ovarian follicles. Specifically, AMH -- also known as MIS (Mullerian Inhibiting Substance) -- is produced by the granulosa cells which comprise the lining of the ovarian follicles. The secretion of AMH is largely related to small antral follicles in the ovary which are sized between 5mm and 8mm.

Since AMH is a protein which is produced by cells in ovarian follicles, the AMH levels in women are directly linked to the number of antral follicles in the ovaries --- a low AMH level in women indicates a low count of antral follicles in the ovaries, and, thus, the production of a low number of oocytes as compared to women with high AMH levels.

In terms of numbers, AMH levels -- regulated by gonadotropin hormone -- can be categorized as 'Normal, 'Low-Normal,' and 'Very low' on the following basis:

  • Normal AMH levels: 1.5 to 4.0 mg/ml
  • Low–Normal AMH levels: 1.0 to 1.5 mg/ml
  • Very low AMH levels: below .5 mg/ml.

Besides these three AMH levels, some women may also have ‘High AMH levels’ (more than 4 mg/ml), which can potentially increase the risk of breast cancer (particularly in premenopausal women) and can also be an indication of a hormonal disorder called ‘Polycystic ovary syndrome’ (PCOS) which is quite common in women of reproductive age.

AMH level testing was first developed in the year 1990, and has now become a part of the standard procedure for female fertility tests. AMH level testing is very useful for young women who want to check their potential for bearing a child, especially if they want to delay their pregnancy. Moreover, the testing of AMH levels is also very important for women who are dealing with infertility issues.

If AMH levels are in the ‘Normal’ range, a woman is believed to have high chances of fertility, along with a high response rate to fertility treatments. AMH levels in the ‘Low-Normal’ range are linked to decreased ovarian reserve in a woman, but with good chances for pregnancy outcomes. AHM levels in the ‘Very low’ range are indicative of diminished ovarian reserve in a woman as well as fertility concerns.

One of the main reasons for low AMH levels is ‘aging.’ Other than aging, some of the key factors which can affect AMH levels and ovarian function include: early ovarian aging because of stress, low circulation to the ovaries, genetic factors, hormonal imbalance, certain lifestyle factors, unhealthy eating habits, illness, injury, and autoimmune disorders.

If AMH levels are low in women aged less than 35 years, they can increase the risk of early menopause. To manage healthy AMH levels and to preserve and enhance female fertility, Ayurvedic products can be very beneficial.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Trichonodosis / Trichorrhexis Nodosa

Trichonodosis (also called Trichorrhexis nodosa) is a common hair shaft defect. The condition is typically characterized by knotted hair on the distal portion of the hair shaft, and results in the thickenings or weak points (nodes) due to the hair break off easily. This condition can lead to hair loss, damaged-looking hair, and lack of hair growth.

Trichonodosis is basically a ‘focal defect in the hair fiber.’ It results from the absence of the cuticle which encloses the hair cortex in a strong layer.

The absence of the cuticle directly exposes the hair cortex to the physical and chemical factors in the environment, and triggers the breaking down of the chemical bonds which are responsible for maintaining the hair structure; thereby making the hair weak. The weakening of the hair means that it can split and fray into minute strands at the point of the breakdown of the cuticle.

Overall, in Trichonodosis, the focal disruption of the hair fiber is a main spot for the breakage of the hair shaft. The defective nodes in the hair break easily because of vigorous combing or brushing.

Trichonodosis can possibly be caused by genetic factors, although it is believed that environmental factors play a big role in aggravating the condition. The environmental factors which are considered to be directly related to Trichonodosis include aggressive brushing of the hair, excessive exposure to chemicals, and ‘perming’ or blow-drying of the hair.

Some of the most common symptoms of Trichonodosis (or Trichorrhexis nodosa) are:

  • Long, kinky scalp hair
  • Lack of hair growth
  • Abnormal/patchy growth of hair on the scalp and body
  • Tangling and knotting of hair
  • Easy breakage of hair close to the scalp

How To Treat High Blood Sugar - Top 4 Diabetes Herbal Remedies

‘Diabetes’ is a term used for describing a group of metabolic diseases typically characterized by high levels of blood glucose (blood sugar) over a prolonged period of time. It is, hence, a long-term condition which is officially referred to as ‘Diabetes Mellitus’ (DM) by doctors. There are some effective Diabetes herbal remedies which can be very helpful in managing the ‘Diabetes’ group of diseases.

People suffering from Diabetes have high blood sugar levels due to two main reasons: (i) inadequate production of insulin by the pancreas; and/or (ii) improper response by the body’s cells to the insulin produced by the pancreas.

In the first case, in which the pancreas do not produce enough insulin, the patients are said to be suffering from Type I Diabetes; and in the second case, in which the cells of the body do not response properly to the insulin produced, the patients are said to be suffering from Type II Diabetes. Type I Diabetes was earlier known as ‘insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus’ or ‘juvenile diabetes,’; while Type II Diabetes is basically a condition marked by ‘insulin resistance.’ Type II Diabetes can gradually lead to a lack of insulin in the patients as the diseases progresses.

Type I Diabetes and Type II Diabetes are the two main forms of Diabetes; with the former (Type I) accounting for nearly 10 percent of all Diabetes cases worldwide, and the latter (Type II) accounting for approximately 90 percent of the Diabetes cases worldwide. Besides Type I and Type II Diabetes, another type of Diabetes is ‘Gestational Diabetes’ which affects women during pregnancy.

Due to high blood sugar levels, Diabetes patients experience some common signs of the disease which include frequent urination (polyuria), intense thirst (polydipsia) and intense hunger (polyphagia). In addition to these symptoms, Diabetes can also lead to unusual weight loss or weight gain, fatigue, male sexual dysfunction, difficulty in healing of cuts/bruises, numbness and a tingling sensation in hands and feet. For managing these symptoms, Diabetes herbal remedies can prove to be very beneficial for the patients.

Herbal remedies for Diabetes comprise a judicious use of some potent herbal formulations which are prepared in accordance with time-tested principles of Ayurveda. Ayurvedic practitioners classify 24 forms of Diabetes, which they commonly categorize as ‘Prameha.’

According to Ayurveda, Diabetes (Prameha) is a metabolic ‘Kapha’ type of disease, which is marked by elevated levels of blood sugar. Ayurvedic experts believe that diabetic disorders are chiefly caused by fat, urine, and the build-up of ‘Kapha’ resulting from intake of improper foods and liquids, as well as lifestyle and other factors.

Ayurveda clearly mentions that Diabetes is a ‘Yapay’ disease, which means that the condition lingers on for the patients throughout their lifespan. However, the condition can be managed with the help of Diabetes herbal remedies, along with some advisable diet and lifestyle changes.

In children, the linear morphea on arms or legs can affect the underlying bone and interfere with bone growth. If on the head, it may extend inwards to the brain and causes headaches, nerve palsies or seizures.

If morphea crosses the joints, the thickening may limit joint movement.

Constriction of the chest wall leads to shortness of breath in case of pansclerotic morphea.

Oral and dental problems occur in case of teeth and jaw involvement in linear morphea. It leads to difficulty in chewing, jaw locking and pain.

Other symptoms include fatigue, muscle pains. Heartburn, eye dryness, cold hands etc.
