Oil Pulling With Nirgundi Oil In Tinnitus

Our sense organs play an important role to perceive the external stimuli. One among them is our ears. The ear is an organ that helps in hearing along with that it also balances the body.

Tinnitus is a condition that pertains to ears. Tinnitus is not a disease it is merely a condition or a symptom, in which a person experiences ringing, buzzing sound in the ear when there is no external sound. The person may perceive musical sounds but these sounds are usually soft and are of low pitched. Tinnitus can affect one or both ears. Tinnitus usually affects the old age people. The affected index ratio is higher in males than in females. Tinnitus may be constant or intermittent.

According to Ayurveda tinnitus is related to "Karna Naada' a condition explained under 'Karna rogas'. Hearing is the attribution of "Akash mahabhuta" in our body and it is the prime function of Vata dosha. Hence, the vitiation of Vata dosha leads to tinnitus.

The most common causes of tinnitus are:-

  • Exposure to loud noise
  • Swimming in polluted water
  • Excessive consumption of dry and cold food items.
  • Malnutrition
  • Health ailments like high blood pressure, thyroid disorders, other ENT problems, etc.
  • Tumors or cysts in the sensory pathway of ear
  • Stress and Anxiety
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Nerves weakness
  • History of ear infection
  • Damage to cochlea
  • Reduced blood flow and muscle spasm

  • Old age
  • Habits of alcohol consumption, smoking, etc
  • Excessive use of earphones
  • Medicines like aspirin
  • Excessive ear wax accumulation
  • Cold climate

  • Hearing different sounds like ringing, buzzing, humming and some musical nodes. This is the prime symptom of tinnitus. It may or may not be associated with other symptoms like -
  • Insomnia (because of this low pitched sound)
  • Headache
  • Anxiety
  • Stress
  • Nausea
  • Reduced hearing
  • Dizziness
  • Occasionally a person may experience pain
  • Depression
  • In extreme conditions, may leads to vertigo.

  1. On a clinical basis with interrogation and examination (with the help of otoscope)
  2. Hearing tests - Audiogram is helpful to evaluate the intensity of tinnitus.
  3. CT scan or MRI

There is no cure in modern medicine but there are some herbs in Ayurveda that can manage this condition.

According to Ayurveda, any derangement in the equilibrium of tridoshas leads to improper functioning of the organs and causes disease. In this condition among tridoshas the prime vitiated dosha is ‘Vata’. Here, Vata vridhi takes place hence, we need to take measures to pacify this aggravated Vata.

Management includes - Palliative care (Shaman) and Purificatory measures (Shodhana).

  • Palliative care helps to subside Vata with the help of rejuvenating and vatahar herbs.
  • Shodhana (Purificatory methods) – Gandusha (oil pulling), Karna purna (instillation of oil in the ears) and Nasya (instillation of oil in the nasal cavity), Shirodhara, etc are beneficial.

Oil pulling (Gandusha) is one of the Panchakarma procedures. Gandusha or oil pulling means retaining the fluids inside the oral cavity for a stipulated period of time, that helps to eliminate the toxins and pacifies Vata and Kapha dosha in the head and neck region. Let us discuss the benefits that are mentioned in our classics -

ancient reference, classical reference, oil pulling, gandusha, benefits of oil pulling

Reference:- Ashtanga hrudyam / Sutrasthanam / Chapter no. 22 / Shloka no. 12

As per our Classics, benefits of gandusha are as follows -

  • Manya – Treat diseases of the neck
  • Shira – Treats all the neurological disorders
  • Karna – Manage all the problems related to ears.
  • Mukha – Beneficial in oral disorders
  • Akshi – Good for eye ailments
  • Kantha – Deals with all throat ailments
  • Praseka – Helpful in excessive salivation
  • Vaktrashosha – And also manage the dryness of the oral cavity.

Sinduwar (Nirgundi) is the main ingredient of 'Nirgundi oil'. It is a Vata shamaka and rasayan (rejuvenating) herb that helps to pacify the pain, swelling and Vata, it eliminates toxins from the body, beneficial for eyes, ears and promotes the hair growth. This oil can be used externally in various neurological conditions, ulcers, piles, wounds, etc. In tinnitus, it can be used in Gandusha, Karnapurna and Nasya procedure.

  • As we know, Vata is the main vitiated dosha. For subsiding that Vata snehan karma (Oleation) is the best way, that too with oils. Thus, gandusha with oil is helpful in this condition.
  • Gandusha helps to relieve Vata from the oral cavity. As we know, the middle ear is connected to the oral cavity or nasopharynx via the Eustachian tube. This tube helps to relieve the pressure of the air inside the ear. Air is nothing just Vata, thus gandusha helps to pacify it directly from the middle ear, hence it is beneficial.
  • This procedure is helpful in managing neurological disorders. Tinnitus may also occur due to the damage of the vestibulocochlear nerve hence, effective in tinnitus.
Oil pulling with nirgundi oil in tinnitus treatment

  • Initially, brush your teeth.
  • Lukewarm the oil but avoid direct heat to the oil.
  • Fill the mouth with nirgundi oil.
  • Hold the oil until tears appear in your eyes. Then spit it out.
  • Repeat this procedure for 2-3 times.
  • Afterward, you can wash the oral cavity with lukewarm water.

Time – Prefer in the early morning.

Duration of Gandusha – It varies from person to person but approx 2 to 5 minutes (It depends upon the individual's retaining capacity)

  • Avoid oil pulling in bleeding disorders and in poisoning conditions.
  • The patient is advised to avoid direct exposure to cold wind and weather.
  • Avoid intake of heavy, spicy, sour and cold foodstuffs.
  • Oil should not be hot.
  • Do not swallow the medicated oil.

Ayurvedic Management Of Cerebral Atrophy

Brain is a complex network of wires like cells called neurons. Unusual shrinkage of these neurons is known as cerebral atrophy. It can be due to various diseases that affect the brain. The progressive and gradual loss of cytoplasmic proteins ultimately results in damage to brain cells. There is a loss of cells (neurons) and the connection between these cells leading to various signs and symptoms. There is a literal shrinking of brain tissue which is eventually reflected in the performance of the brain. The neurons of which particular area that gets damaged, actions controlled by that particular part is altered.

Ayurvedic management of cerebral atrophy

This cerebral atrophy can be seen in two patterns, i.e. localized or generalized. In localized cerebral atrophy only the partial functioning of the brain is lost while in generalized one, all activities are diminished. Hence, signs and symptoms also vary accordingly.

As already discussed, the symptoms depend upon the part of the brain which is affected. Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Dementia- Progressive memory loss, disorientation, impairment of intellect, loss of ability to learn, difficulty in organizing, sequencing and planning. These all symptoms make the life of the patient difficult and impact negatively.
  • Aphasia- Language problem may also occur which includes improper speech or difficulty in language understanding.
  • Seizures- Seizures can be mild or severe in form, which includes repetitive movements, disorientation and loss of consciousness.

The most common cause is aging. As we grow old, the rate of cells degeneration in the brain is more than the production of new cells, also the neurons loses the connections. If studies are to be believed, our brain shrinks almost 1.9% in every 10 years of period. Normally the signs of atrophy become visible around 60 years of age when degeneration and shrinkage rate increase to 1 percent every year.

However there are many diseases which result in unusual cerebral atrophy. These are:

  • Traumatic injury to the brain
  • Stroke
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Genetic brain disorder like Huntington’s disease
  • Autoimmune disease like Multiple sclerosis
  • Improper diet or malabsorption resulting in vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Encephalitis, AIDS or other certain infectious diseases
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Side effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Cushing’s disease which results in excessive production of cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormones
  • Mitochondrial encephalomyopathies

If we refer to Ayurvedic literature the exact disease with its name is not mentioned so we have to go with the comparison of the pathology of the disease. As per Ayurveda, there are three doshas which govern the life process. Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha determine the body functioning. Their balance means health and imbalance of them mean disease. Now coming to the Cerebral atrophy, Vata is the main dosha behind it. As Vata governs the functioning of the nervous system. Vitiation of Vata dosha results in diseases of the brain. Vata dosha can get aggravated due to improper lifestyle and diet. Prolonged intake of the diet which aggravates Vata or following lifestyle that impairs the balance of Vata dosha causes cerebral atrophy. In old age, there is vitiation of Vata dosha that's the reason cerebral atrophy is more common in that age. People who usually take Vata aggravating food, suffer from cerebral atrophy. Thus Vata Vyadhi is the main cause of this neural disease.

Planet Ayurveda, one of the best and most fast growing Ayurvedic clinics of India has come up with the amazing combination of herbal remedies which helps to manage the symptoms of Cerebral atrophy and gives better living condition to the patient. What is Hyponatremia & How can we treat it naturally at home?

One of the electrolyte disorders is hyponatremia. Hyponatremia is a condition in which the level of sodium (Na) in our body drops down. The normal range of sodium level is 135 – 145 mEq/L (milliequivalents per liter). If sodium level drops below 135 mEq/L then that condition is called as hyponatremia. In other words, hyponatremia indicates an excess of water level in plasma.

what is hyponatremia

The ionic composition and interstitial fluids are essential to be normal for normal functioning of cells which is maintained by bidirectional pumps, one among them is 'sodium-potassium pump'. Thus, Sodium helps to maintain plasma, interstitial fluid and intracellular fluid balance. This indicates that sodium is an important factor for maintaining blood pressure and cellular functions in our body.

There are many causes which may be responsible for hyponatremia, they are –

  • Excessive water or fluid consumption – Excessive water or fluid consumption raises the water content in our body which in turn increases the extracellular water and reduces the sodium concentration in cells.
  • Reduced osmolar concentration of fluids
  • Various systems of our body are responsible for this condition, they are –
    1. Digestive system - Imbalance in alimentary tract due to vomiting and diarrhoea cause imbalance in the fluids.
    2. Sweat glands – Excessive loss of salt and water by sweating leads to mild hyponatremia. The cause of excessive sweating may be a high-grade fever or hot climate.
    3. Impaired renal function – Basically, kidney is the organ that maintains water and electrolyte balance by filtration. Thus, the foremost organ which affects the sodium level in our body is the kidney. This happens in maximum of all the renal disorders
  • Medications – Diuretics and laxatives lead to water-electrolyte imbalance due to impaired excretion.
  • Some diseases or conditions leads to hyponatremia, they are – burns, scalds (leads to dehydration) and diabetes (Frequent urination) is the cause for loss of electrolytes from the body, liver cirrhosis.
  • Any impairment in Sodium-potassium pump leads to loss of sodium from the body.
  • Less Salt (NaCl) intake.
  • Hyperlipidemia - Psuedohyponatremia is seen with gross hyperlipidemia
  • Hormonal imbalance, for example - Syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone secretion (SIADH)

It affects the whole body hence the signs and symptoms of this condition goes as -

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Vertigo
  • Edema
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Abnormality in neurological and muscular functions
  • Mild confusion
  • Lassitude
  • Reduced appetite
  • Sleepiness
  • Myoclonic jerks
  • Generalized seizures
  • Convulsions
  • Unconsciousness
  • Severity leads to neurological damage

This condition affects the structure and functions of each cell. Automatically its impacts are seen on every organ and on every process in our body.

  1. Euvolemic hyponatremia (condition arises when the sodium level is normal but the water level is high, this impairs the sodium concentration)
  2. Hypervolemic hyponatremia (Increased extracellular and plasma volume, usually occurs in congestive cardiac failure and cirrhosis)
  3. Hypovolemic hyponatremia (Reduced sodium and plasma level)

Because of the large number of possibilities or causes, it is very difficult to determine the exact cause, but to evaluate the sodium level we need to go for some laboratory investigations. They are -

  • Blood and urine tests to measure plasma and urine sodium level
  • Endocrine investigations may be required.

If the plasma sodium level is < 110 mEq/L, this is considered a medical emergency because there is a high chance of neurological damage.

As per Ayurveda, the medicines that are helpful -

1. Lavan

There are five types of salts explained in our classics they are – saindhava, samudrika, sauvarchala, vida and audbhida. They are a rich source of sodium hence useful in hyponatremia. Among all the salts saindhava lavana is the best one because it won't increase pitta dosha in our body thus this salt can be used in a hypertension person.

Saindhava lavana Qualities with Ancient Reference

Reference – Bhavaprakasha Nighantu / Haritakiadi Varga / Shloka no. 241

MeaningThe meaning of this shloka goes as – Saindhava lavana possesses these qualities: swadishta (Increases taste), deepanam (Increases digestive fire), pachanam (Aids digestion), laghu (Light to digest), snighdham (Slimy in nature), ruchyam (Increases appetite), hima (Cold in potency), vrushya (Aphrodisiac in nature), sukshma (Subtle in nature), netryam (Good for eyesight) and balances all the three doshas in our body.

2. Sajjikhaar (Barilla / Impure carbonate of soda)

This medicine is used in the form of alkali, which contains some amount of sodium in it. Thus, beneficial in this condition.

3. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an excellent nervine tonic. It helps to restore normal neurological functions of our body.

4. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is one among the rasayanas that helps to balance higher mental functions. It helps to maintain hormonal imbalance hence, it is beneficial in this condition.

"Intravenous transfusion of NaCl solution is required in extreme cases".

Individuals who are suffering from hyponatremia condition and if the symptoms are very mild then they can follow some home remedies like -

  • Coconut water
  • Lemon water with salt
  • Directly consume some amount of salt
  • Avoid excessive water or fluid consumption.
  • Hyponatremia patients should maintain the daily intake of salt approx. 2-3 grams.

Those who are already suffering from hyponatremia they should need to take precautions as follows –

  • Avoid laxatives and diuretics
  • Restrict water intake
  • Frequent monitoring of sodium level and blood pressure is required. High salt intake is required in this condition thus, we should monitor blood pressure level.
  • Diet should contain green leafy vegetables like spinach and celery and also the use of beetroot and carrot in this condition is proven beneficial.

If you ignored this condition you may end up with some severe neurological damage or coma and this condition may also lead to death.

What is the treatment of muscular atrophy in Ayurveda?

Human body has more than 600 muscles that provide the ability for locomotion, respiration, digestion, etc. Muscles are a bundle of fibrous tissues that has the ability to contract, when stimulated produces motion. Muscle cells contain actin and myosin, they are protein filaments and are responsible for contraction. About half of our body weight is because of our muscles. There are three types of muscles - skeletal, cardiac and smooth. These muscles have a unique structure, have a peculiar role that pertains to a particular organ. Muscular atrophy is defined as a condition where muscular mass gets reduced. Person presents with partial or complete wasting of muscle.

muscular atrophy

According to Ayurveda muscles are called as 'Peshi'. They are composed of mamsa dhatu which is the 3rd dhatu in our body, it covers and provides firmness to the entire body and responsible for various functions. This condition is considered as "Mamsa kshaya", and in our classics its symptoms (lakshanas) are mentioned that occur during wasting, they are –

ancient reference, shloka, muscular atrophy

Reference – Charak samhita / Sutra sthana / Kiyante shirsi adyaye / Chapter no. 17 / Shloka no. 65

Meaning – The meaning of this shloka goes as - dryness occurs around waist, neck and abdominal region in muscle wasting.

There are various causes of muscular atrophy, they are -

  • Diet – A diet that lacks in protein is responsible for muscular atrophy
  • A sedentary lifestyle or lack of physical exercise is one of the causes of atrophy.
  • Congenital defects.
  • Hereditary factors.
  • Starvation leads to malnutrition thus automatically it affects muscle mass and leads to muscle wasting and atrophy. Mostly, this is the cause for atrophy in females because of the desire to attain a perfect figure they start starving, finally they end up with conditions like malnutrition, anorexia nervosa, etc.
  • Protein-energy malnutrition like marasmus is one of the causes of muscular atrophy.
  • Neurological atrophy occurs due to damage of the neurons that stimulates the production of muscle mass.
  • Any cause that leads to muscle tissue immobility is responsible for atrophy such as fractures and paralysis.
  • Some diseases where muscular atrophies may occur, they are – Erb’s disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Becker’s muscular dystrophy, Parkinson’s, Sclerosis, Botulism, Cachexia, and various other Myopathies.
  • Any cause or injury that leads to physical destruction of muscle fibers is the cause of muscular atrophy. For example - a sudden accident or burns leads to sudden atrophy.
  • Risk factors – Excessive intake of alcohol, Few medicines like long term use of corticosteroids, Auto-immune disorders and Degenerative changes or disorders.

The signs and symptoms of this disease are as follow -

  • Restricted movements
  • Muscle weakness
  • Inability to move
  • Debility
  • Body ache
  • Weakness
  • Dysarthria (Difficulty to speak)
  • Reduced capability of performing tasks.
  • This condition interferes with the functions of other systems like –
    1. If atrophy of skeletal muscles takes place then the person may show with the symptoms like; affected body movements, impaired neurological functions, flawed circulation, etc.
    2. Atrophy of cardiac muscles responsible for an impaired conducting system of the heart. Thus, dysfunction of the conduction system can cause irregular heart rhythm.
    3. Atrophy of smooth muscles produces indigestion, dyspnea, dysuria, impaired peristalsis, refractive errors, erroneous circulation, etc.

Diagnosis can be made on clinical basis but to know the exact cause we need to take the help of these investigations:

  • Blood tests
  • Urine tests - Urea level in urine
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Nerve conduction studies
  • Muscle biopsy

According to Ayurveda, we can manage this condition as follows -

  • Nidana parivarjana – Avoid the root cause of the disease.
  • Srotoshodhana by detoxifying and removing the toxins from the body
  • Bruhana chikitsa or rasayan chikitsa – Internal medicines to increase muscle mass
  • Rehabilitation
  • Dietary and lifestyle changes

In Ayurvedic classics, two lines of treatments are explained, they are 'Santarpana' and 'Apatarpana'. Here we need to apply santarpana therapy that helps to cure the condition. They include panchakarma therapies as well as internal medications.

1. Panchakarma Therapies

Panchakarma therapies are very helpful to deal with muscular atrophy. These are:

  • Abhyanga – Oils that promote the muscle strength are beneficial in this condition, for example – ksheerbala taila, mahamasha taila, balaashwagandha taila, etc.
  • Shashtika shali pinda sweda – A special procedure that is really effective in muscle wasting where medicated poultice massaged onto the body by immersing in the medicated milk
  • Basti – Medicated enema, here Ksheer and Oil bastis are helpful. They control the vata dosha in the body and rejuvenate the destructed muscle and nerve fibers.
  • Nasya – Instillation of medicated oils in nostrils are beneficial in this condition such as ksheerbala, mahamasha, etc.

Haemophilus Influenzae Infection - Symptoms & Ayurvedic Treatment

Haemophilus influenzae bacterium is present as a commensal organism (an organism which derives food from another organism without helping or hurting it) in the nasopharynx of most healthy adults from where it can spread to cause systemic as well as respiratory tract infections.

Haemophilus Influenzae Infection, Symptoms, Ayurvedic Treatment

Based on the presence or absence of polysaccharide capsule, this bacterium is divided into typeable non-typeable forms.

The respiratory disorders are predominantly caused by the nontypeable forms (NTHi). The defects in the host response as well as the pathological properties of this bacterium may result in the spread of this bacterium from the upper airway to the bronchi of the lung which results in airway inflammation.

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) is a bacteria that is responsible for severe pneumonia, meningitis and other invasive diseases which is most commonly found in children aged less than 5 years. It is transmitted through the respiratory tract from infected to susceptible individuals.

Nontypeable H.influenzae is the bacterial pathogen in adults with COPD. Chronic colonization of the airways contributes to the airway inflammation that is the hallmark of COPD.

H. influenzae is a component of the normal upper respiratory tract flora and is well recognized to be an important cause of infections. This bacteria is also a major cause of a variety of respiratory conditions such as COPD.

It is a gram negative coccobacillus bacterium having variable shape and can grow both in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.

Haemophilus influenzae can cause many types of infections depending on the part of the body that is affected by it. It can cause infections such as pneumonia, bacteremia, meningitis.

The symptoms of pneumonia (lung infection) include:

  • Chest pain
  • Fever or chills
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing
  • Muscle pain or aches
  • Excessive tiredness
  • Sweating

The infection in the bloodstream is known as bacteremia. Symptoms include:

  • Excessive tiredness
  • High fever and leukocytosis are typical symptoms of bacteremia.
  • Lethargy
  • Anorexia

Meningitis is the most serious and most common manifestation of H.influenzae type b infection. The clinical features due to H.influenzae are indistinguishable from the acute meningitis.

The most common signs and symptoms are:

  • Fever
  • Altered Central Nervous System (CNS) function

In modern medicine, antibiotics are prescribed generally for 10 days to treat the infection. The dose will depend on how serious the infection is. Other treatments such as breathing support, wound care for the parts of the body with damaged skin, medications to treat low blood pressure are administered.

According to Ayurvedic perspective, it comes under Aupsargik Roga (infectious disease) which spreads through direct contact with an infected person. Ayurveda emphasizes on the concept of strengthening host defense against diseases. The concept of immune-modulation in Ayurveda is achieved through the use of Rasayana medicines which improve the host resistance of an individual.

In Ayurveda, various herbal preparations are used clinically to prevent or cure infections. In the Ayurvedic system of medicine, many medicinal plants are useful for strengthening immunity of an individual. The primary benefits of using these herbs that are plant-derived herbal remedies are relatively safer than synthetic drugs.

What is the Ayurvedic treatment of Autoimmune Bullous Skin Disease?

Autoimmune bullous skin disease is a rare disorder which is characterized by over-lapping features, resistant to treatment and potential fatality. It needs quick and proper management to avoid fatal complications.

It is an auto-immune disorder that occurs when the immune system attacks the skin and causes blistering. It is more common in men above the age of 60 years but can also occur in children as well. The blisters can form on the lower abdomen, armpits, thighs etc.

As the name suggests, it is an auto-immune disorder which is caused when the immune system attacks the thin layer of tissue below the outer layer of the skin. The immune system makes protein known as anti-bodies. These anti-bodies attack the substances that hold the epidermis (outer) and inner (dermis) layers of the skin altogether. The damage causes the two layers of the skin to separate and as a result fluid collects between the two and forms blisters.

In auto-immune disorders, with prolonged anti-inflammatory stress, the immune system turns against its host and attacks the body's own tissues.

  • Itching is the first symptom
  • The large areas may develop looking like hives before the appearance of blisters.
  • Blisters occur all over the body with burning sensation, thirst and fever.
  • Eczema or a hive like rash
  • Because of infected skin erosions, life-threatening sepsis can develop.
  • Small blisters or sores in the mouth

According to Ayurveda, this condition is caused due to the vitiation of all the three doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha with the predominance of Pitta and Kapha dosha. This condition may be co-related to Visphotaka in Ayurveda.

Charak Samhita, Part 2, Chikitsasthanam, Kushtchikitsadhyaya: 7, Shlok No. 9 & 10

Reference: Charak Samhita, Part 2, Chikitsasthanam, Kushtchikitsadhyaya: 7, Shlok No. 9 & 10

Meaning: The pathogenesis of skin disorders are explained in these shlokas. According to these shlokas, vitiated Vata, Pitta and Kapha vitiate the skin, blood, muscles and interstitial fluids. All these seven factors are responsible for skin disorders and these seven factors cause eighteen types of skin disorders. Any skin disorder is not caused due to the vitiation of one dosha only.

To confirm the diagnosis, some blood tests may be done and skin biopsy may also be performed by taking a small sample of the affected skin.

In conventional treatment, anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment for various auto-immune disorders but due to the side effects and high cost of these anti-inflammatory drugs, patients are increasingly using complementary and alternative modalities (CAM) of treatment.

In the long run, corticosteroids can increase the risk of weak bones, diabetes, high blood pressure etc.

In Ayurveda, various herbal and herbo-mineral preparations are described which are found to be effective in auto-immune disorders.

Alternative Treatment For Infective Endocarditis (Bacterial Endocarditis) - Ayurvedic Treatment

Infective Endocarditis is an infection of the inner lining of the heart chambers and heart valves. It occurs when bacteria or fungi from another part of the body such as mouth spread through the bloodstream and attached to the damaged areas of the heart. This condition should be treated quickly as it may destroy the valves of the heart and can lead to life-threatening complications.

Infective Endocarditis, Bacterial Endocarditis

It may develop suddenly or slowly depending upon the type of bacteria or fungi that are causing infection and also depends on any underlying heart problem.

The signs and symptoms of infective endocarditis may vary from person to person.

Common Signs And Symptoms Are:-

  • There is flu like symptoms such as chills and fever.
  • Fatigue
  • Aching in muscles and joints
  • Change in a heart murmur, which is the heart sounds made by blood rushing through the heart.
  • Chest pain while breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling in legs, feet or abdomen

Usually the immune system destroys the harmful bacteria that enter into the bloodstream. Even if bacteria reach the heart, it may pass through without causing any infection. But, sometimes bacteria that live in mouth, throat, gut, skin can cause serious infections such as endocarditis. They can enter the blood stream through:

  • Medical conditions such as gum disease, sexually transmitted infection, inflammatory bowel disease, skin sore etc. can give an opportunity to enter the blood stream.
  • Certain dental procedures that can cut the gums may allow the bacteria to enter the bloodstream.
  • Every day oral activities such as brushing teeth, bleeding from the gums allow the bacteria to enter the bloodstream especially when the teeth and gums are not healthy.
  • Use of contaminated needles and syringes is also the cause of concern for people who use intravenous (IV) drugs such as cocaine or heroin.
  • People with faulty, damaged or diseased valves are more likely to develop infective endocarditis.
  • If the endocardium (lining of the heart) is rough, then bacteria can more easily attach to the lining of the heart.

Master Charak has described that due to the intake of ushna, tikshana, kshara, vidahi, amal, lavan ras, alcoholic beverages, spicy and oily foods, there is a vitiation of Pitta dosha. The vitiated Pitta dosha ultimately causes Raktadushti. Due to this, there are symptoms such as fever, excessive thirst, heartburn, giddiness, burning sensation, perspiration etc. all over the body. It is known as Pittaj Hridroga in Ayurveda.

We can co-relate this condition with infective endocarditis and other inflammatory conditions of the heart.

The diagnosis of infective endocarditis is done on the basis of the medical history of the patient and several tests that include blood tests, echocardiogram, electrocardiogram (ECG), X-ray of the chest etc.

Modern medicine prescribes antibiotics for this condition. Sometimes, surgery is also recommended to fix the damaged heart valves and to clean up any remaining signs of the infection.

Planet Ayurveda offers various herbal remedies which are effective in repairing the damaged heart valves and therefore reduces the chances of infection.

What Is The Natural Treatment For Plague Bacteria (Black Death)?

Plague is a serious bacterial infection that is caused by a bacteria named Yersiniapestis. In earlier times it was also known as black death. This bacteria is mainly found inrodents, mainly rats and fleas which feed on these rats are the main modes of transmission of the infection. Humans and other animals get this infection from the bite of the infected rat or flea.

It was called black death as this infection destroyed many civilizations of Europe in ancient times. Plague affects usually people living in rural areas of Asia, Africa, and the USA. However, as compared to medieval times, its occurrence has decreased significantly. But this is a fatal disease that if not treated on time can cause the death of the patient. There are different types of Plague, most common of them is bubonic plague which affects lymph nodes of neck, groin, and armpits. Deadliest of them affects the lungs and can spread from one person to another.

Incidences and risk of plague have decreased a lot as only a few thousands of cases come into the light, throughout the world. Some factors like overcrowded rural or semi-rural areas where there are poor hygienic conditions and bad sanitation increase the risk of plague. Veterinary doctors have also a high risk of developing this disease as they might come in contact with infected dogs or other animals during their practice.

Plague if not treated timely and properly can cause many complications like gangrene, meningitis, and death.

1. Bubonic Plague

As said above it is the most common type of plague and as the name suggests swollen lymph nodes (buboes) isthe main sign of it. Common signs and symptoms of this disease are:

Swollen lymph nodes or buboes in neck, armpit or groin. They may be as big as the egg of chicken and are firm and painful to touch. There may also be some generalized symptoms like chills, fever, fatigue, weakness, headache and muscle aches.

2. Septicemic Plague

When the infectious bacteria grow and multiply in your bloodstream it causes septicemic plague presenting with signs and symptoms like chills, fever, pain in the abdomen, profound weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, bleeding under skin, from nose, mouth or rectum, shock and gangrene formation in toes, fingers, and nose.

3. Pneumonic Plague

As the name suggests this type of plague affects lungs and it is a rare one but the most dangerous. Pneumonic plague is communicable and can spread from one person to others through droplets during cough. Signs and symptoms include cough, hemoptysis (bloody sputum), nausea, vomiting, headache, high-grade fever, weakness and pain in the chest. It spreads with great speed and can infect the whole respiratory system within 2-3 days resulting in failure of the respiratory system and eventually shock. It is fatal if not treated timely.

The infecting bacteria Y.pestis is found in rodents, specifically rats and sometimes in dogs. Other animals like rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, voles, and mice may be the source of infection. The Incidence of most of the cases of plague are caused by the bite of an infected animal or flea which fed on infected animals. Only the pneumonic plague in all of them is communicable and can be transmitted from person to person.

Other than a bite from an infected animal, broken skin of a person can cause infection when it comes in contact with the blood of an infected animal.

Plague is a bacterial infection which is first manifested by swollen lymph nodes so according to Ayurveda, the Rasdhatu (lymph) is vitiated that causes lymph nodes to be swollen, firm and tender. This rasdhatu then vitiates Vayu which carries it to various parts of the body producing various signs and symptoms.

As per Ayurveda for the treatment of plague, this vitiated dhatu and Vatadosha are to be treated. Herbal remedies, dietary and lifestyle changes are used to treat plague naturally.

Planet Ayurveda, the best clinic for Ayurvedic treatment comes up with the specific herbal remedies which help to treat this disease naturally and completely. Watch Out For These Long-Term Effects of Chronic Stress

Mental Stress or tension is a state that arises due to adverse circumstances. Although, we know that these stress and strains are the part and parcel of our life, we suffer from this in day to day life. In limit, these stress and strains won't affect our body, but those who are not able to deal with it, they deteriorate their health and also experience a downfall in their works.

Watch Out For These Long-Term Effects of Chronic Stress

This strain impacts a great effect on our lives and on our health too. According to Ayurveda, this is concerned with Manovaha Srotas. Manovaha srotas is one which controls all the psychological and physiological functions of our body like – hormonal balance, all sensory and motor functions, etc. along with that it also affects the physical health and gives rise to many diseases like hormonal disorders – hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, PCOD, etc. Similarly, these strains affect our manovaha srotas and impair the functioning of various systems. The reason behind vitiation of Manovaha Srotas is - Vitiation of Sharirik doshas and Mansik doshas. The sharirik doshas are vata, pitta, kapha, and mansik doshas are rajas and tamas. If equilibrium is maintained in between all these doshas then the person is healthy, if there is any de-arrangement in these doshas that will lead to disease.

Stress is not contrived to decline health but when you are contingent on it for days, chronic stress causes various health ailments.

In this competitive world, mostly everybody is leading stressful life, facing family problems, financial problems, suffering from various health issues, etc. that lead to stress. Basically, all the personal and social problems are the reasons for stress.

In human beings, stress is maintained or overcome by the hormone Cortisol (produced by adrenal glands) and another hormone which can be helpful in this condition is – Serotonin (known as happy hormone that leads to happiness or mood –boosting neurotransmitter). Anything that leads to the reduction of these hormones is also considered as the causative factor. Hence, these hormones are classified among risk factors.

  • Headache
  • Frequent sickness
  • Decreased energy level
  • Decreased memory and cognitive skills
  • Insomnia
  • Appetite changes
  • Increased body movements
  • Irritable mood

As discussed earlier, stress affects various systems that include -

  1. Nervous system – The most important system that gets affected by stress is our nervous system and the person may experience various problems like – reduced memory power, reduced cognitive skills, insomnia, headache and body pains and person may end up with depression.
  2. Endocrine system – Hormones are neurotransmitters that are responsible for various actions. Any imbalance in them impairs the physiology of our body and stress is the main factor which is responsible for hormonal variation thus, it affects our endocrine system.
  3. Cardiovascular system – Our brain and mind both works and get affected synchronously. The variations in the circulatory system include - palpitation, anxiety, high blood pressure, excessive sweating. In extreme conditions, it may lead to heart attack and stroke.
  4. Lymphatic system or we can call it as an Immune system that helps us to fight against various diseases. Stress hampers the production of white blood cells antibodies in our body thus, flares up the antigen level. This is the reason behind frequent sickness.
  5. Digestive system – The first and foremost system that gets affected is our digestive system. Individual may suffer from problems like – anorexia, irregular bowel habits i.e. sometimes constipation and loose stools, gastritis, etc. These stress hormones slow down the release of digestive juices hence delay the digestion and emptiness of colon.
  6. Musculoskeletal system – Person may experience fatigue, tiredness, muscular pains, etc.
  7. Respiratory system – Many people experience breathlessness when they are stressed. This symptom will occur during extreme stress.
  8. Reproductive system – Menstrual irregularities, a sexual abnormality such as premature ejaculation or impotence, low libido, etc. Basically, these irregularities occur due to hormonal imbalance.
  9. Other problems – Stress may worsen skin problems like – acne, psoriasis, eczema, etc. Stress may also contribute to hair fall. Stress is the main provoking factor in case of cancer. Moreover, a person may become addicted to alcohol, smoking, etc. and other bad habits to overcome stress.

There are various Ayurvedic herbs that help to manage stress and improve the higher mental functions. They are:-

  • Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) – Stabilizes the mental conditions and acts as a brain tonic. It helps to relieve cranial pressure hence, beneficial to relieve stress.
  • Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) – It is a Medhya drug, explained in our classics. So, it helps in boosting memory power. Brahmi counteracts the effects of stress by regulating hormones.
  • Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)– Ashwagandha reduces cortisol level in our body, as cortisol is a stress hormone. Basically, it is a rejuvenating herb.
  • Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis)– It helps in boosting memory, increases intellectual power and it also improves cognitive skills.
  • Sunthi (Zingiber officinale) – It shows very good results with the combination of other brain tonics. As sunthi has tikshana property, which will help other medicines to cross blood brain barrier.
  • Tagar (Valeriana wallichii) – Tagar is the most useful medicine for treating insomnia because it calms the mind. It is also act as nervine tonic.
  • Vacha (Acorus calamus) – It is used to enhance memory and also causes a reduction in anxiety and causes a prolonged calming effect.
  • Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra)– As per our classics, licorice roots are effective in managing nervous disorders because they act as catalysts.
  • Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus)– Shatavari promotes energy level and also supports the immune system.

  • For stress head massage is a good option to adopt. For this, oils that can be useful are - Brahmi taila, Himanshu taila, Ksheerbala oil, Bhringaraj oil, etc.
  • Nasya (Nasal drops) and Shirodhara are the panchakarma procedures that help to relieve stress. Balataila, Anu taila, Ksheerbala taila can be useful.

Reference - Ashtang hrudyam / Sutrasthana / Ayushkamiya adhyaye / Chapter no. 1 / Shloka no. 26

In Ayurveda, it is clearly mentioned that we can treat mano roga by balancing rajas and tamas doshas. And the best medicine is to balance them by means of -

  • Dhee – Improving intellectual power
  • Dhairya – Improving courage
  • Atmavigyanam – Self-realization

  • Modifications in diet and lifestyle are helpful. Prefer green vegetables and fresh fruits.
  • Add Yoga, Pranayam and Meditation in your daily routine as a part and parcel of your life.
  • Do head massage daily as it relaxes the mind and body.

Treatment Of Vocal Cord Cancer Through Ayurveda

Cancer is becoming a common disease nowadays. This is all due to our lifestyle changes, pollution, lack of knowledge, eating a lot of junked food, etc. In Ayurveda, it is termed as "Arbuda" but in ancient times, it is a rare disease as compared with the present time. Now it is considered as an epidemic. But in Ayurveda, we have numerous herbs and bhasmas that give good results in all types of cancers. So today we will discuss vocal cord cancer in detail with its proper treatment in Ayurveda.

In this shloka according to Acharya Shushruta "Shopha roga" is considered as "Arbuda" (cancer or tumor). The cancer develops from an imbalance of vata, pitta, kapha doshas and excessive growth of mamsa and meda dhatus.

This is shloka of "Acharya Charaka" sutra sathana chapter 18. According to this shloka "Shotha" developed at different sites from various diseases like adhimansa, Arbuda, etc.

Vocal cord is one of the two small bands of muscles within the larynx. When these muscles vibrate, they produce voice in the throat.

The cancer of the vocal cord is also known as Larynx cancer. It is a rare cancer where malignant cells grow in the voice box or larynx. The larynx is composed of three parts:

  1. The Glottis: It is the middle part of the larynx that contains the vocal cords.
  2. The Supraglottis: The tissue above the glottis.
  3. The Subglottis: These are the tissues below the glottis that connects to the trachea that takes air in the lungs.
Treatment Of Vocal Cord Cancer Through Ayurveda

Cancer can develop in any part of the larynx, but usually begins in vocal cord. In vocal cord cancer flat, scale-like squamous cells are develop in the inner walls of the larynx. This cancer may often reach the lymph nodes in the neck. These cancerous cells spread to the back of the tongue, some sections of the throat, neck, lungs, and other parts of the body.

Stage 0

When abnormal cells are found in the lining of the larynx, this is known as stage 0. These may become cancer and spread into normal tissues, then it is called as stage 0 carcinoma in situ.

Stage I

It depends on where the cancer began in the larynx:-

  1. Supraglottis: It is cancerous in Supraglottis and in this vocal cord can move normally.
  2. Glottis: Cancer cells are produced in one or both vocal cords, but the vocal cords can move normally.
  3. Subglottis: Cancer is produced in the Subglottis only.

Stage II

It depends on where cancer cells began to develop in the larynx:

  1. Supraglottis: Cancer cells develop in the Supraglottis or surrounding tissues.
  2. Glottis: Cancer cells develop in the Supraglottis, Subglottis or the vocal cords are not able to move properly.
  3. Subglottis: Cancer cells spread to the one or both vocal cords that may not move normally.

Stage III

In this condition, cancer is in the larynx only and vocal cords are not able to move as it spreads to both vocal cords. These cancer cells have spread to one lymph node on the same side of neck measuring at 3 cm or smaller.

Stage IV

It is further divided into stage IV A, stage IV B, and Stage IV C.

  1. In IV A Stage: Cancer cells spread through thyroid cartilage that has spread to tissues beyond larynx, neck, trachea, thyroid or esophagus.  The size of the tumor is 3 cm or smaller.
  2. In IV B Stage: This cancer spreads to the spinal column, carotid artery, parts of the chest as measures larger than 6 cm.
  3. In IV C Stage: In this stage, the cancer spreads to other body parts like bones, liver or lungs.

These all are the stages of vocal cord cancer.

  1. Change or loss of voice
  2. Excessive coughing with blood
  3. Breathing difficulties
  4. Swallowing difficulties
  5. Neck pain
  6. Earache
  7. Swelling in the neck
  8. Sore throat
  9. Lumps in the neck
  10. Weight loss

The mutations that damage the cells in your vocal cord are mentioned in detail given below:

  1. Having poor nutrition
  2. Consumption of excess alcohol
  3. Weak immune system
  4. Exposure to toxins such as asbestos
  5. Smoking
  6. Exposure to human papilloma virus.
  7. Tobacco
  8. Fanconi anemia may be a reason for this cancer
  9. Excessive consumption of processed food.
  10. Less consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables

It can be through physical examination like if you are having swollen lymph nodes including your mouth, cheeks, gums, tongue, throat, lips etc. You can go for biopsy including CT scan, MRI, PET scan, X Ray, bone scan etc.

As per Ayurvedic point of view, various types of cancer are known as “Arbuda”. In Ayurveda Larynx (vocal cord) is known as “Swaryantra: When there is excessive growth of cells in Swaryantra it is known as “Swaryantra Arbuda”. The involvement of all three doshas kapha, vata, and pitta is there for Arbuda formation. But basically, imbalance of vata dosha can lead to vocal cord cancer. It causes hoarseness of voice.

So for proper Ayurvedic treatment of vocal cord cancer, Planet Ayurveda contains an herbal pack known as “Crab Care Pack”. This pack comprises of six herbal products mentioned below in detail:
