How to Treat Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (sJIA) Naturally?

Abstract

Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) is a rare auto-inflammatory illness that affects children who have an inherently (by birth) 'overactive' immune system. Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis affects around 10-20% of children suffering from Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), which is the most common type of arthritis in children. The occurrence of sJIA is marked by inflammation in joints and other parts of the body. Planet Ayurveda, which is an herbal manufacturing company offering beneficial herbal products for managing sJIA in a natural manner.

Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (sJIA): Introduction

Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) is a rheumatic disease which generally affects children aged 5 years or younger. The auto-inflammatory disease is a rare, but critical, subtype of Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). The disease is 'Systemic' that is, it can affect the joints as well as several internal organs of the body, including the lungs, liver, and the heart.

Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (sJIA)

Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) is characterized by an innate 'over activity' of the immune system in affected children. The disease usually develops in children at around two years of age, though it can occur at any time till the age of 16 years. Both the genders are at an equal risk of the occurrence of sJIA. Nearly 40% of the children suffering from sJIA have a lower body height as compared to their healthy counterparts. For many patients, sJIA can be a life-long condition which can continue into adulthood.

Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) can potentially lead to some long-term consequences for affected children. It can adversely affect normal growth and bone development, and result in slow or stunted growth, joint damage, and loss of mobility.

Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (sJIA): Causes

The exact cause triggering the onset of sJIA in children is not clearly known, because of which the condition is described as 'idiopathic.' Nonetheless, it is believed that the occurrence of the disease is associated with a combination of genetic and environmental factors. In other words, children with sJIA have a genetic predisposition for the disease which evidently gets triggered in certain environmental settings.

Children affected by sJIA have an overactive immune system which gets activated even when the body is not fighting any infection. In addition, children with sJIA also apparently have elevated blood levels of two inflammatory proteins (cytokines) – interleukin-1 (IL-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) – which are a key cause of inflammation in several auto-inflammatory disorders.

Systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (sJIA): Symptoms

The common signs and symptoms of sJIA are:

  • Recurring fever (103 degrees or higher) which occurs daily at a specific time
  • Flat, pink-colored skin rash (on the trunk, arms or legs) noticeable during fever spikes
  • Arthritis symptoms like pain, swelling, and stiffness in the joints
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Generalized feeling of discomfort
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Inflamed or enlarged liver and spleen
  • Inflammation of the lining of the lungs or the heart.

Vasant Ritu

According to Ayurveda the year has been classified into 6 seasons and each season lasts for two months, Shishira (Winter), Vasantha (Spring), Grishma (Summer), Varsha (Monsoon), Sharat (Autumn) and Hemanta (Late autumn).

Vasanta ritu comes under Adanakala where the "Nature starts taking away the strength from its creatures".

During the previous season of Shishira (Winters) the Kapha accumulated in the body starts to liquefy due to the warmer climate and this in turn the heat reduces the Agni (Digestive fire).

Treatment of Rectal Polyps in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

RECTAL POLYPS: ABSTRACT

Rectal polyps usually occur as a harmless and asymptomatic condition, which is marked by an abnormal and unregulated cell growth that starts in the colon or rectum. The excess cell growth takes the form of polyps, which are generally considered non-cancerous. Nevertheless, the condition requires timely treatment because if the polyps increase in size, they can be lead to complications like cancer.

rectal polyps

RECTAL POLYPS: INTRODUCTION

'Rectal polyps' is a common condition of 'fleshy growth' affecting the colon (large intestine) and rectum (the bottom 12-inch section of the colon). The condition is characterized by the formation of small clumps of cells on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Rectal polyps can affect people of almost all age-groups. However, the condition most commonly affectsadults. More specifically, the occurrence of rectal polyps is quite common in nearly 20% of adults, particularly overweight adults aged 50 years or older.

In some serious cases of delayed diagnosis and treatment of rectal polyps, patients affected by the condition can be at a potentially high risk of developing colon cancer or rectal cancer gradually over some time. If the cancer is detected at an advanced stage, it can even be fatal. Hence, it is important to have the polyps treated/removed in the early stages so that the condition does not turn into malignant cancer.

RECTAL POLYPS: CAUSES

The exact cause for the occurrence of Rectal polyps is not known. Nevertheless, the condition is associated with abnormally excessive growth of healthy new cells (for replacing the old and damaged cells) in the colon or rectum.

Some of the possible causes of rectal polyps are:

  • Family history of the condition
  • Genetic factors (inheritance of a rare gene which increases the risk of developing polyps)
  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise
  • Alcohol use
  • Tobacco use
  • Low-fiber and high-fat diet
  • Inflammatory intestinal disorders, like Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis
  • Type-2 Diabetes is not properly controlled.

Treatment of Castleman disease through Ayurveda

INTRODUCTION TO CASTLEMAN DISEASE (CD)

Castleman disease (CD) is a rare disease that affects the lymph nodes and related tissues. The disease is characterized by abnormally rapid and excessive growth of cells in the lymph nodes which are a part of the body’s immune system. Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped glands that help the body fight infections by filtering out germs. The glands are found in small groups in different parts of the body.

Castleman disease was first described as an uncommon lymph-node disorder by Dr. Benjamin Castleman in the 1950s. The disease is known by some other names also. These names are Castleman tumor, Giant lymph node hyperplasia, Angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia, Angiofollicular ganglionic hyperplasia, Benign giant lymphoma, and Angiomatous lymphoid hamartoma.

castleman disease, Treatment of Castleman disease through Ayurveda

In people affected by Castleman disease, there is an overgrowth of cells in and around the lymph nodes. The disease can affect people of all age groups, though it most commonly affects adults. The potential risk of the occurrence of the disease is almost equal for both men and women.

Castleman disease is not officially categorized as cancer. Nonetheless, the disease can sometimes become quite serious and can increase the patient’s risk of cancers like Lymphoma (cancer of the lymph system) and Kaposi sarcoma.

TYPES OF CASTLEMAN DISEASE

Castleman Disease Is Of Two Types:

  1. Unicentric Castleman disease (UCD): UCD is the more common type of Castleman disease that affects adults in the 20s and 30s. This condition involves cell overgrowth in only one lymph node or only one region of enlarged lymph nodes, generally in the chest or abdomen.
  2. Multicentric Castleman disease (MCD): MCD is a serious form of Castleman disease which usually affects people aged between 40 and 60 years. This condition involves cell overgrowth in a number of lymph node groups throughout the body or, in other words, multiple regions of enlarged lymph nodes.

CASTLEMAN DISEASE: CAUSES

The exact cause behind the occurrence of Castleman disease is not clearly known. However, some of the possible causes that can lead to the disease are:

  • Weak immune system
  • Acquired genetic mutations
  • Inflammation
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8)

CASTLEMAN DISEASE: SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of Castleman disease are mostly related to the ‘Multicentric’ form of the disorder because people suffering from the ‘Unicentric’ type of disease do not initially have any noticeable symptoms.

The common signs and symptoms associated with Castleman disease are:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Night sweats
  • Poor appetite
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Anemia
  • Fluid buildup in the abdomen
  • Bruising and easy bleeding
  • Red spots on the skin
  • Skin rashes
  • Numbness in hands/feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Enlarged spleen or liver

CASTLEMAN DISEASE: TREATMENT

The treatment of Castleman disease depends on whether a particular patient is suffering from the Unicentric or Multicentric form of the disorder.

Castleman disease can also be managed safely with the help of herbal or Ayurvedic products. Renowned herbal manufacturing company Planet Ayurveda offers some excellent herbal products for managing the disease in a natural manner.

Treatment of Afibrinogenemia in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

Abstract

It is a genetically inherited blood fibrinogen disorder in which the blood does not clot normally due to a lack of fibrinogen. Fibrinogen is a blood protein that is necessary for coagulation. It is transmitted in an autosomal recessive manner. The hemorrhagic conditions sometimes can be life-threatening. It occurs in approximately 1 in 1 million people. Abolghasemi and Shahverdi (2015) mention that there have been about 250 cases is reported in the world literature.

We have discussed important points like Ayurvedic aspects, symptoms, causes, risk factors, the complication with some effective home and herbal remedies.

Introduction of Afibrinogenemia

Afibrinogenemia is also known as congenital afibrinogenemia. Afibrogenemia is a rare bleeding disorder in which the absence of fibrinogen in the blood that is a protein that is essential for blood clotting. People suffering from this disease may have severe bleeding episodes, specifically during infancy or childhood. Bleeding may occur anywhere in the body including nose, skin, gastrointestinal tract, joints, liver, muscles, genitals, and urinary tract. This disorder is an autosomal recessive that means two unaffected parents can have a child with this disorder.

Afibrinogenemia, Herbal Remedies

The lack of fibrinogen can be seen with excessive and sometimes uncontrollable bleeding. Diagnosis can often be made at the time of birth because affected infants have severe bleeding in the umbilical cord. Early diagnosis of congenital afibrinogenemia will help in the treatment and also helps in preventing an individual from having severe bleeding or particularly bleeding inside the skull which can lead to death.

Ayurvedic aspect for Afibrinogenemia

Ayurveda is a traditional and ancient form of medicine. It is a holistic approach to health. The goal of Ayurveda is to maintain a healthy person's health and to alleviate disorders of the diseased. Ayurveda believes in maintaining health by balancing the mind, body, and soul. This balance can be maintained by the balance between Dosha, Dhatu, and Mala. Dosha is of three types each having its dominating factors like Vata has Air dominating factor, Pitta has Fire dominating factors and Kapha has water dominating factors. The balance between these Dosha is known as a healthy state of body and imbalance of these Dosha can cause various health problems.

According to Ayurveda, afibrinogenemia is a type of Sehajvikar (congenital) due to deficiency of the components of Raktadhatu which interfere with Raktastambhak action of Raktadhatu. People with this disease can have a higher risk of hemorrhage (severe bleeding) specifically in babies or young children. Newborns may have excessive bleeding from the umbilical cord. Pancha Mahadhutas plays an important role in the growth of a fertilized ovum and the formation and development of fetus organs.

Symptoms of Afibrinogenemia

  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Nosebleed
  • Gum bleeding
  • Bleeding into the space of joints
  • Easily bruising
  • Prolonged menstrual periods
  • Bleeding in the mucous membrane
  • Very rare bleeding inside the skull
  • Repeated miscarriages during pregnancy
  • Excessive bleeding from the minor injury
  • Central nervous system hemorrhaging
  • Spontaneous rupture of the spleen

Causes of Afibrinogenemia

1. Mutation

Each of these genes provides instruction for making one part of a protein called fibrinogen. This protein plays an important role in clotting blood. The absence of fibrinogen in the blood is caused by a mutation in one of three genes which are known as fibrinogen alpha chain FGA, beta-chain FGB, and gamma-chain FGG genes. Mutation in FGA, FGB, and FGG can affect blood levels of fibrinogen in several ways.

2. Hereditary

Congenital afibrinogenemia is caused by a complete absence of fibrinogen protein. If the child inherits only one copy of the mutated gene, he/she becomes a carrier, and will not develop afibrinogenemia. In such cases, they will only have half of the normal levels of fibrinogen. Milder disease forms as seen if the child inherits only one gene from the parent. These patients may have abnormal bleeding only during major trauma or high-risk surgical procedures.

3. Autosomal recessive

Autosomal recessive conditions are disorders that occur when two copies of an abnormal gene have been inherited on a non-sex chromosome.
