A Mind-Body Approach to Depression

Depression is a serious mental disorder that is affecting the lives of people directly or indirectly. In today's world, 350 million people are affected by it. Depression is becoming a social stigma in terms of suffering, prevalence, morbidity, dysfunction and it is becoming an economic burden.

Occasionally, everyone feels sad and gloomy but these feelings pass within a couple of days, but when a person has a depressive disorder, it interferes in his or her personal life.

depression

World Health Organization (WHO) defines depression as a common mental disorder having the symptoms such as depressed mood, feeling of guilt or low self worth, disturbed sleep, appetite, loss of interest or pleasure, loss of concentration etc.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION?

The symptoms occur most of the day, nearly every day which include:

  • Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, emptiness or tearfulness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all the normal activities
  • Angry outbursts, frustration or irritability even over small matters
  • Disturbances in sleep such as sleeping too much or suffering from insomnia
  • Anxiety and restlessness
  • The feeling of guilt or worthlessness
  • Trouble in thinking or concentration
  • Suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts or suicide

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF DEPRESSION?

A variety of factors are involved in depression such as:

  1. Inherited Traits: Depression is more common in those people whose blood relatives also have this condition.
  2. Hormones: The changes in the body's balance of hormones may also be involved in triggering or causing depression.
  3. Brain Chemistry: Changes in the function and effect of neurotransmitters play a role in causing depression. Neurotransmitters are naturally occurring brain chemicals that are likely to play a role in depression.

WHAT IS THE AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON DEPRESSION?

Ayurveda gives prime concern to the mind and its disorders when it is a matter of health. Negative thoughts directly affect the health of an individual. In all Ayurvedic classics, there is a description of physical disorders and their psychiatric impacts simultaneously.

Psychiatric disorders are described in Ayurveda thousands of years ago and are relevant in the present time too. In Ayurveda, it is stated that depression is a state of both emotions (mansikbhava) as well as a disease (mansikvyaadhi). In Ayurvedic terminology, depression can be co-related with avsaad, vishad, manodukhajunmada and kaphajunmada.

The understanding of pathology of depression by means of basic principles of Ayurveda such as sharirikdosha (body humor), mansikdosha (mental state), jnanendriya (sense organs), karmendriya (motor organs), satwabala (strength of mind), agni (biological fire), dhatus (tissues sustaining the body), ojas (vital essence of life) are essential.

WHICH DOSHA IS INVOLVED IN DEPRESSION ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA?

In Ayurveda, it is mentioned that every disease has a predominance of any of the humor i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

  • Most of the cardinal features of depression are due to the vitiation of Vata dosha. Vata dosha governs all the movements of mind and body.
  • Vata dosha mainly Prana Vata controls the manas (mind) as it has the property of retaining intellect.
  • Along with Prana Vata, Sadhaka Pitta and Vyana Vata which are located in heart are responsible for emotions are also vitiated.
  • In depression, the predominant dosha is tamas which is characterized by ignorance, apathy and inactivity.
  • So, depression is also a condition of tamo predominance over rajas.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT OF DEPRESSION ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA?

In Ayurveda, the treatment of depression is focused on mind-body approach. Ayurvedic treatment includes internal medications, external therapeutic procedures and diet.

The property of ghee is that it does not increase Kapha too and improves Sadhak. Include 1-2 teaspoon of ghee in the daily diet.
  2. Pranayama should be practiced regularly. In addition, healthy daily regimens, regimens according to seasonal changes, the moral code of conduct are also explained in Ayurveda for the treatment as well as prevention of depression.

How often you go for a pelvic examination? If you consult your gynaecologist you may be familiar with term Bulky uterus. As the term itself explains bulky uterus means uterus that is bulkier than its normal size. Usually, this situation arises after two or more deliveries due to an increase in the muscular lining of the uterus which causes it to be bulkier than the normal weight or normal size. Gynaecologists usually recommend for the uterus surgery but many patients prefer alternative methods to get rid of the bulky uterus. Ayurveda offers you with the best alternative treatment that helps you treating bulky uterus along with other health benefits. Here, we are providing you all the necessary details about the problem, including its meaning, symptoms, causes, and the herbal remedies to relieve the same.

INTRODUCTION

Generally, the woman doesn't know and is not aware of the fact that they have a bulky uterus, they usually discover it during the pelvic examination or and in some cases when women face pain in their uterus. The Uterus is the muscular organ of the female reproductive organ usually called a womb. A woman's uterus is normally small in size but has the tendency to grow as much as bigger due to its ability to stretch, especially at the time of delivering a baby. The Bulky uterus is the term used for -Increase in the size of woman's uterus than its normal size i.e., 8*4*4cm. It is observed that there is an increase in the glandular muscle in the uterus wall which causes the uterus to expand or grow slightly heavier.

bulky uterus, uterine fibroids

Usually the women face this problem in the following situations:

  1. After menopause
  2. The age group of more than 30yrs
  3. Pregnant women after delivery

SYMPTOMS OF BULKY UTERUS

Women with the bulky uterus may suffer with one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Heaviness in the lower abdominal area
  • Gaining weight
  • Heavy bleeding and cramps during menstruation
  • Constipation
  • Painful sexual intercourse
  • Backache
  • Leg cramps
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Feeling pressured during urination
  • Acne
  • Unnecessary hair growth
  • Tender breast tissues
  • Pale skin

CAUSES OF BULKY UTERUS

There may be many reasons responsible for bulky uterus, such as:

  • Uterine Fibroids - Fibroids are abnormal tissue growth or the tumors on the wall of the uterus. Hormonal imbalances or genetic disorders cause an increase in these tissues. Hence, these tissues cause an increase in the size and weight of the uterus hence resulting in the bulky uterus. These tissues are noncancerous and usually develop during pregnancy or the childbearing years. These fibroids don't have any side effects but it causes pain during menstruation, heavy bleeding and pain in the pelvic region. Genetic disorders, early puberty are the reasons for the growth of these fibroids.
  • Post Pregnancy - Women's uterus enlarges at the time of delivering a baby through a C-section. There is a growth of muscle mass in the specific area of the uterus called Adenomyosis. It causes the uterus wall to swell and causes pelvic pain. It can also cause heavy bleeding, cramps and longer periods. It is mostly observed in women post-pregnancy or women above 30 years of age.
  • Endometrial Cancer - Also called cancer developed in uterus. This cancer tissue causes the uterus lining to swell and hence causes bulky uterus. Abnormal and frequent vaginal bleeding, vaginal discharge, and difficulty in urination are the primary symptoms. Get a pelvic examination and consult a gynaecologist if a severe problem occurs. This cancer spreads slowly so you have to get the treatment as soon as possible to prevent it from spreading it to bladder, vagina or fallopian tubes.
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) - PCOS is caused by hormonal imbalance and increases the male hormone (androgen) in the female body. It causes irregular and prolonged periods among women of reproductive age. PCOS is the growth of cysts on the outer edges and enlarged ovaries. Excess hair growth, acne, and obesity are the symptoms of PCOS. It affects the shedding of the endometrial lining that usually occurs at the time of menstruation. The accumulation of this endometrial lining during menstruation causes the uterus to feel heavy or bulky.
  • Ovarian Cysts - The Female reproductive system has two types of ovaries located on both sides of the uterus. Ovarian cysts are the fluid or solid sac-like structure that grows in the ovaries causing pain during urination, abnormal bloating, painful bowel movements, breast tenderness, and these cysts grow on their own. Get a pelvic examination to check whether these cysts are cancerous or noncancerous.

COMPLICATIONS OF BULKY UTERUS

The bulky uterus is not a life-threatening disease but the reasons that cause bulky uterus causes health problems that have to be treated properly to avoid any health complexities.

  • Pain In The Pelvic Region- Fibroids, and cysts causes enlargement of the uterus lining causing the constant pain in the lower abdomen and the pelvic region.
  • Heavy Bleeding- PCOS and ovarian cysts cause heavy bleeding at the time of menstruation.
  • Urine Infection- Swelling in the uterus lining and pressure during urination can give rise to various yeasts and bacterial infections.
  • Infertility- Fibroids and adenomyosis cause severe pains at the time of pregnancy and may result in miscarriage or infertility.

DIAGNOSIS

The constant abdominal pain, pelvic pain, vaginal infection, and uterus swelling which is felt by women herself, calls her to consult a gynaecologist. A gynaecologist will do a pelvic examination, CT scan and ultrasound to check the health issue causing the ill health.

Treatment of Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK (TIA): OVERVIEW

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) is a brief, but extremely critical, stroke-like attack. This brief attack usually lasts only for a few minutes (mostly 2 to 15 minutes), but necessitates immediate medical attention so that it can be differentiated from an actual stroke. TIA is also known as a "mini stroke."

Transient Ischemic Attack

The reason behind the occurrence of a Transient Ischemic Attack is a clot in one of the small blood vessels which carry blood to the brain. The clot is generally a result of the clogging of the walls of the vessels with fat deposits. The clot causes the blockage of the blood vessel, thereby obstructing the supply of oxygen to the brain and hampering the brain function. The clot remains only for a short (transient) period of time at a particular site. After that, it either dissolves or travels up the blood stream.

The symptoms of TIA are similar to those of a stroke, including dizziness, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, and vision problems. Although most of the symptoms of TIA resolve within 24 hours, the ‘mini stroke’ is considered a warning signal for a possible full-blown stroke in the future. People who have suffered one or more mini-strokes have ten-fold higher risk of an actual stroke in future, as compared to people who have not suffered a mini-stroke.

TIA generally occurs in people aged more than 55 years; with men at a comparatively higher risk than women. A high TIA risk is also linked to family history of individual, high levels of ‘homocysteine’ amino acid in the blood, and inherited disorder called Sickle Cell Anemia.

CAUSES OF TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK (TIA)

The main cause of TIA is formation of blood clot in a blood vessel carrying blood to the brain. Some of the other causes of TIA are:

  • Family history
  • High cholesterol or hypertension
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Excessive alcohol/drug use
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Carotid artery disease
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD).

SYMPTOMS OF TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK (TIA)

The common signs and symptoms of a TIA are:

  • Dizziness or faintness
  • Sudden, severe headache
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty while speaking
  • Difficulty in understanding what others speak
  • Vision changes
  • Balance or coordination problems
  • Abnormal sense of taste/smell
  • Loss of consciousness (in severe cases)
  • Feeling of weakness or numbness on one side of the body (depending on site of the blood clot).

TREATMENT OF TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK (TIA)

The treatment of TIA depends on the cause behind the occurrence of the condition. Based on the cause, doctors may prescribe the use of medications which can be helpful in lowering the risk of blood clots, or can even recommend an angioplasty or surgery.

According to Ayurveda, TIA can be managed with the help of herbal anti-Vata formulations, and healthy food and lifestyle changes.

Planet Ayurveda herbal manufacturing company offers some extremely beneficial herbal products for managing TIA in a safe and natural manner. These products are:

Treatment of Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma: Overview

Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma (ESS) is a rare, malignant tumor which results from an abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells in the uterus. It is an atypical kind of uterine cancer which affects women during the pre-menopausal period --- that is, women aged between 40 and 50 years.

ESS is the tumor of the endometrium (the innermost lining layer of the uterus). The tumor develops in the supporting connective tissue (stroma) of the uterus, the smooth muscle, or the endometrial stroma.

Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma – which was earlier called Endolymphatic stromal myosis – accounts for approximately 0.2% of all malignant uterine tumors. The condition is believed to affect 1- 2 women per million per year.

Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma

ESS can distinctly be graded into the following two categories, based on cell morphology and mitotic count:

  1. Low-Grade Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma (LGESS), in which the pace of growth of the tumor is quite slow, and the tumor is usually detected only after it has spread (metastasized) to organs outside the uterus.
  2. Undifferentiated Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma (HGESS), in which the pace of growth of the tumor is very rapid.

An early diagnosis of ESS is very crucial because it can improve the chances of survival of women affected by the condition.

Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma: Causes

Doctors presently do not know the exact underlying cause of ESS. In most cases, the condition occurs sporadically in affected women, without any family history of the condition. Nonetheless, the risk of ESS can be high for women if the uterus or pelvic area has been exposed to radiation in the past (between 5 and 25 years earlier), or if they have previously used medication which affect the estrogen hormone of the body.

Some scientific research also suggests that the development and progression of ESS and other stromal tumors is possibly linked to a chromosomal abnormality.

Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma: Symptoms

The common signs and symptoms of ESS are:

  • Abnormal uterine bleeding (which is not part of menstrual periods)
  • Heavy bleeding even after menopause
  • Pain in abdomen
  • Abdominal distension/swelling
  • Frequent urination
  • Pelvic pain
  • Swelling of the pelvis
  • Vaginal discharge that indicates a possible infection or some other benign condition.

Treatment of Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease: Overview

Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease (KFD) – simply, Kikuchi disease or Histiocytic Necrotizing Lymphadenitis – is a rare, benign, and self-limiting disorder which characteristically affects the cervical lymph nodes which are found in the neck.

In simple words, KFD is a non-cancerous and non-malignant disease which is marked by the enlargement (lymphadenopathy) and inflammation of lymph nodes (or lymph glands which play a key role in the body's ability to fight infections). In medical terminology, KFD is characterized by regional cervical lymphadenopathy with tenderness. The condition is generally accompanied with mild fever; with nearly 50% patients developing symptoms similar to those associated with flu.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease, Histiocytic Necrotizing Lymphadenitis

KFD mostly affects young adults aged between 20-30 years. Women are at a comparatively higher risk of developing the disease than men. The occurrence of KFD is not linked to genetic factors; it develops sporadically in affected individuals who do not have any family history of the disease.

KFD can affect people all across the world. However, the occurrence of the disease is much higher among the Asian population – especially Japanese – as compared to other populations. Incidentally, the disease was first described by Dr Masahiro Kikuchi in 1972, followed by an independent description by Y. Fujimoto.

KFD is known by some other names, besides Histiocytic Necrotizing Lymphadenitis or HNL. The disease is also called:

  • Necrotizing Lymphadenitis
  • Kikuchi Necrotizing Lymphadenitis
  • Phagocytic Necrotizing Lymphadenitis
  • Subacute Necrotizing Lymphadenitis.

The proper diagnosis of KFD is very crucial because this disease can often be mistaken for a serious disorder like malignant lymphoma – specifically cervical adenopathy – due to the similarity of symptoms. Moreover, KFD is also sometimes mistaken for some other conditions such as tuberculosis lymphadenitis, and adenocarcinoma.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease: Causes

The exact cause behind the occurrence of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is not known. However, doctors believe that the disease usually occurs due to the following reasons:

  • A virus or other infectious agent (because KFD symptoms are quite similar to the symptoms of certain viral infections).
  • An autoimmune disorder (because of which the body’s natural defense mechanism against ‘foreign’ organisms start attacking the healthy tissue).

One of the several autoimmune diseases with which KFD is generally associated is Systemic Lupus Erythematous (SLE or lupus) --- a chronic autoimmune condition which affects the joints, skin, kidneys, and other organs.

Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease: Symptoms

The most noticeable symptom of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is the swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck. Some other common symptoms of the disease include:

  • Mild fever
  • Night sweats
  • Pain in the joints
  • Headache
  • Skin rashes
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight loss
  • Sore throat
  • Enlargement of the liver (in rare cases).

KFD can be effectively managed with the help of Ayurvedic medicines. Planet Ayurveda herbal manufacturing company offers some extremely beneficial herbal remedies for managing the disease in a safe and natural manner. What is Subpleural Honeycombing & How it can be Prevented Naturally?

Abstract

According to the epidemiologic reviews, the incidence of interstitial lung diseases (ILD) is estimated at 30 per 100000 individuals annually and affecting males more than females. (5) It's a fact that when a person with chronic lung disorders left untreated the disease reaches up to end -a stage which ultimately results in honeycombing of lungs. Modern treatment is believed to treat a disorder in emergency cases but doesn't eliminate the root cause of the disease. According to Ayurvedic principles, herbs can pacify Tridosha in our body which keeps our body healthy. Ayurvedic pharmacy believes to eliminate the root cause of the disease without causing any side effects.

What is Subpleural Honeycombing?

Generally speaking, end-stage lung disease is a condition that leads to Diffuse parenchymal lung diseases (DPLDs) and is characterized by cystic air spaces of variable sizes in both the lungs which may be due to obstructive emphysema, alveolar septal dissolution, etc. In this situation, there is an important radiological manifestation which is known as Honeycombing, first studied by N. Oswald and T. Parkinson. Honeycombing is defined as clustered cystic airspaces measuring about 3-10mm in diameter but eventually as large as 2.5cm and resembles much to the beehive. The airspaces consist of thick fibrotic walls and are filled with inflammatory cells and mucin.

Subpleural Honeycombing

Types and Forms of Honeycomb

Honeycomb cysts measuring more than 1mm diameter can be detected by high-resolution CT (HRCT) imaging and can be classified into following forms:

  1. Micro cystic honeycombing
  2. Macro cystic honeycombing
  3. Mixed microcystic and macrocytic honeycombing
  4. Combined emphysema and honeycombing

Which Diseases are resulting in Honeycombing?

Interstitial lung diseases (ILD) which are sometimes termed as diffuse parenchymal lung diseases (DPLDs) are a heterogeneous group of lung disorders caused due to fibrosis and inflammation that disrupts the bronchioles and parenchyma. These can be caused due to environmental factors like dust, coal mine, silica, toxic gases (methane, cyanide), autoimmune or idiopathic diseases. (5) Some of the examples of interstitial lung diseases like sarcoidosis, pneumonia, asbestosis, etc. Patients with interstitial lung diseases are recommended with various immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, pirfenidone, etc. to manage the symptoms of the diseases.
