Herbal Remedies for APLA Syndrome – Causes & Symptoms

Antiphospholipid syndrome is an immune disorder in which abnormal antibodies are linked to abnormal blood clots in veins and arteries. An autoimmune disease is a condition in which the immune system attacks the body. In autoimmune disease the main role is of western diet which affects the immune response. There are more than 80 autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, Grave's disease and many more. The main symptoms of autoimmune disease include fatigue, skin problems, and swollen glands. The famous actress SHILPA SHETTY suffers from APLA SYNDROME (autoimmune antiphospholipid syndrome). We will further discuss its signs, symptoms , and its ayurvedic management further in this topic.

APLA Syndrome

Antiphospholipid syndrome is known as hughes syndrome or sticky blood. It is an autoimmune disorder that causes increased risk of blood clots. Blood clots can form in the legs, lungs, kidneys, and spleen. This clots can lead to heart attack, strokes and in pregnancy it leads to miscarriage and still birth. Patients with antiphospholipid have greater risk of DVT (deep vein thrombosis), arterial thrombosis (heart attack or stroke), blood clots in the brain leads to problems with speech, memory. Antiphospholipid syndrome leads to rapid organ failure due to generalized thrombosis known as Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome. It affects people of all age groups including children and babies.

  • Antiphospholipid antibodies are present in 15 -20% of deep vein thrombosis and ⅓ in strokes patient above 50 years.
  • There are chances of recurrence of the symptoms but if adequate therapy is provided it can prevent the recurrence.
  • The main treatment is to prevent the blood clots by anti platelet drugs.
  • Risk of thrombosis must be known such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and many underlying autoimmune diseases.

  1. Primary Antiphospholipid Syndrome - It is not linked with any disease or condition.
  2. Secondary Antiphospholipid Syndrome - It develops with another autoimmune disorder such as Lupus.

Antiphospholipid is an autoimmune condition that means the immune system mistakenly attacks the immune system. In this syndrome the immune system produces abnormal antibodies called antiphospholipid antibodies which target the proteins which are attached to the fat molecules (phospholipids). Phospholipids are the cell membrane which plays an important role in blood clotting. If antibodies attack on fat molecules there is an increased risk of blood clots, as fat and proteins are important products for maintaining blood consistency. So blood becomes sticky and risk increases blood clots.

  • Blood clots in legs (DVT) these clots travel to lungs causing pain, swelling, redness.
  • Repeated miscarriages - It includes high blood pressrue and premature delievery.
  • Rashes - lacy or net like patterns.
  • Strokes

  • Kidney failure - Due to decrease blood flow to kidneys
  • Stroke - Decreased flow of part of your brain causing stroke which result in neurological damage.
  • Lung problem - It includes high blood pressure in lungs and pulmonary embolism
  • Pregnancy complication - Include miscarriages, premature delievery, pre eclampsia

  • ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay)
  • Blood test (twice)
  • Lupus anticoagulant test
  • Liquid phase coagulation assay

  • Blood thinner (Aspirin)
  • Anticoagulant medicine (Heparin, Warfarin)

APLA syndrome is co related to sroto dushti of rakta vaha srotas (blockage in blood channels) which occurs in the body due to accumulation of the ama in the body, when this food remains in the stomach for more duration it get converted into toxins and these toxins further travels through the channels and get occupied in the blood channels of the body. This can be done with various methods such as Shodhan kriyas (purification method) like vaman, virechan and the medicines which digest the ama doshas of the body and thus reduce the size of the clots and prevent the formation of the clots.

Ayurvedic Treatment For Demyelinating Diseases

Demyelinating diseases are the group of diseases which causes of loss of fatty tissue sheaths which protects nerves by surrounding them, i.e. myelin. This condition causes trouble in sending the signals properly. Myelin sheath loss leads to several neurological problems like weakness, changes in vision, behavioral problems, altered sensation or cognitive problem. In the demyelinating diseases sometimes the spinal cord is affected and sometime the brain. Multiple sclerosis is one of the most common Demyelinating diseases. It is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system of a person attacks its own body's myelin of spinal cord, brain or eyes. This is article contains all the detailed information about Demyelinating diseases and its Ayurvedic management.

Demyelinating Diseases

Most of the nerves in your body are covered with myelin sheath, i.e. a protective layer. Nerves act as electric wires and myelin covering is a insulation on them. In a way like electricity moves from main source of power to different areas similarly the nerves helps in transfer of messages from brain to other body parts smoothly and quickly but when a person suffers from any of the Demyelinating diseases, nerves do not function properly.

Demyelinating diseases are the group of disorders where the myelin sheaths of the nerves are damaged causing scar formation in its place. So when the signal is passed from brain, it cannot travel easily through this scar tissue leading to abnormal neurological complaints.

As per Ayurveda, the Demyelinating diseases is a sannipataja, i.e. vitiation of all the three doshas. Specifically Vata dosha becomes aggravated due to improper diet and lifestyle. Eventually there is seen depletion of Ojas and disturbance in the dhatu. All these factors altogether causes Demyelinating diseases.

Some of the common symptoms of Demyelinating diseases are:

  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Issues in bowel or bladder (may be both)
  • Loss of coordination
  • Difficulty in concentration
  • Difficulty in swallowing or chewing
  • Memory impairment
  • Diminished or loss of vision
  • Changes in behavior or mood
  • Tingling or numbness in arms, hands, feet, face or legs
  • Difficulty in walking
  • Speech become slurred
  • Weakness felt in legs or arms

There is no exact cause found in many of such cases. However some of the causes which became known are:

  • Virus
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Autoimmune reaction of the body where one's own immune system attack the cells of the body and causes damage
  • Decreased oxygen supply to the brain
  • Blood vessels damage in the brain

Demyelinating diseases are of several types, like:

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM)
  • Balo's disease (Concentric sclerosis)
  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT)
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS)
  • HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM)
  • Neuromyelitis optica (Devic's disease)
  • Schilder's disease
  • Transverse myelitis

Several different methods are used to diagnose the Demyelinating diseases. Usually the investigation starts with the medical history and physical examination which will reveal if the spinal cord, brain, peripheral nerves and optic nerves are affected or not. If the signs and symptoms indicate the neurological disease further examinations like MRI, Electromyography, Nerve conduction studies and Lumbar puncture is done to confirm the diagnosis.

Conventional treatment of Demyelinating diseases is based on the given disease. Aim here is to relieve the symptoms and prevent further demyelination of the nerves. Fortunately the myelin re-grows on its own. Treatment involves Immunosuppressants, anti-depressants, and medicines as per the symptoms.

As Ayurveda is a wholistic system of healing, every person is treated overall following individualization. As there is imbalance of tridosha, diminished ojas and dhatus, hence different Ayurvedic remedies that can help in restoring the balance of all these things are used. When the causative factor is removed and symptoms are relieved, disease goes away naturally.

Planet Ayurveda have now become a very well known name in the field of Ayurveda, not only in India but in other countries as well. It is a herbal pharmaceutical company that manufactures best quality herbal medicines and products. For Demyelinating diseases Planet Ayurveda offers a combination of herbal remedies.
