Ayurvedic Treatment For Demyelinating Diseases

ABSTRACT

Demyelinating diseases are the group of diseases which causes of loss of fatty tissue sheaths which protects nerves by surrounding them, i.e. myelin. This condition causes trouble in sending the signals properly. Myelin sheath loss leads to several neurological problems like weakness, changes in vision, behavioral problems, altered sensation or cognitive problem. In the demyelinating diseases sometimes the spinal cord is affected and sometime the brain. Multiple sclerosis is one of the most common Demyelinating diseases. It is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system of a person attacks its own body's myelin of spinal cord, brain or eyes. This is article contains all the detailed information about Demyelinating diseases and its Ayurvedic management.

Demyelinating Diseases

INTRODUCTION TO DEMYELINATING DISEASES

Most of the nerves in your body are covered with myelin sheath, i.e. a protective layer. Nerves act as electric wires and myelin covering is a insulation on them. In a way like electricity moves from main source of power to different areas similarly the nerves helps in transfer of messages from brain to other body parts smoothly and quickly but when a person suffers from any of the Demyelinating diseases, nerves do not function properly.

Demyelinating diseases are the group of disorders where the myelin sheaths of the nerves are damaged causing scar formation in its place. So when the signal is passed from brain, it cannot travel easily through this scar tissue leading to abnormal neurological complaints.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF DEMYELINATING DISEASES

As per Ayurveda, the Demyelinating diseases is a sannipataja, i.e. vitiation of all the three doshas. Specifically Vata dosha becomes aggravated due to improper diet and lifestyle. Eventually there is seen depletion of Ojas and disturbance in the dhatu. All these factors altogether causes Demyelinating diseases.

DIAGNOSIS OF DEMYELINATING DISEASES

Several different methods are used to diagnose the Demyelinating diseases. Usually the investigation starts with the medical history and physical examination which will reveal if the spinal cord, brain, peripheral nerves and optic nerves are affected or not. If the signs and symptoms indicate the neurological disease further examinations like MRI, Electromyography, Nerve conduction studies and Lumbar puncture is done to confirm the diagnosis.

TREATMENT OF DEMYELINATING DISEASES

Conventional treatment of Demyelinating diseases is based on the given disease. Aim here is to relieve the symptoms and prevent further demyelination of the nerves. Fortunately the myelin re-grows on its own. Treatment involves Immunosuppressants, anti-depressants, and medicines as per the symptoms.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT OF DEMYELINATING DISEASE

As Ayurveda is a wholistic system of healing, every person is treated overall following individualization. As there is imbalance of tridosha, diminished ojas and dhatus, hence different Ayurvedic remedies that can help in restoring the balance of all these things are used. When the causative factor is removed and symptoms are relieved, disease goes away naturally.
