How to Increase Testosterone in Males Naturally?

Testosterone is a male hormone that plays a key role in masculine growth and development during puberty. Testosterone levels vary greatly among men. Testosterone level generally peak during adolescence and early childhood but as the person gets older, testosterone level generally declines. It is very important to diagnose in older men if a low testosterone level is due to the decline of normal aging or if it is due to a disease. This condition is known as Hypogonadism. However, older men tend to have lower testosterone levels than do younger men. It is a hormone produced primarily in the testicles. Modern treatment prescribes testosterone therapy to overcome the low level of testosterone but it is not clear that testosterone therapy would have any benefit for older men. There are various side effects of testosterone therapy like - it contributes to sleep apnea (a very serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts), stimulates non-cancerous growth of the prostate, enlarges breasts, causes skin reactions or acne, limits sperm production or causes testicles shrinkage. In addition, testosterone therapy may impact the risk of heart disease. There are many herbs mentioned in Ayurveda that increase testosterone naturally. Ayurvedic treatment can increase testosterone in males without producing any side effects.

Ayurveda also agrees to the age related natural lowering of the testosterone levels. Market is flooded with sex power boosting Ayurvedic herbs. A few of the drugs are sold in the market irrespective of its proven efficacy, safety aspects, research data etc. People feel shy to discuss their sexual problems with anyone and rely on medicines available in medical shops which further deteriorate their condition. Patients must be honest with their doctor while discussing sexual problems instead of relying on the products being sold in the market. These products are available in the market under the name Herbal Ayurvedic Products. They are also insulting Ayurvedic science which does not deal only with the products to boost sexual drive, rather it is a very deep science. Ayurvedic classical literature explain the herbs that increase testosterone levels, their utility, scope and limitations.

TESTOSTERONE HELP TO MAINTAIN

  • Bone density
  • Muscle strength and mass
  • Fat distribution
  • Sex drive
  • Facial body and hair
  • Red blood cell production
  • Sperm production

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF LOW TESTOSTERONE LEVEL?

  1. Changes in sexual function: There is a symptom of reduced sexual desire, fewer spontaneous erections during sleep, infertility etc.
  2. Physical Changes: Various physical changes like - increased body fat, reduced muscle bulk, decreased bone density, gynecomastia (tender or swollen breasts), loss of hair on body etc.
  3. Changes in Sleep patterns: Low testosterone levels cause insomnia and sleep disturbances.
  4. Emotional Changes: It can also cause decrease in self-confidence, sadness, depression, trouble in remembering things, loss of concentration etc.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF LOW TESTOSTERONE LEVELS?

  • Testicular carcinoma
  • Microbial infections
  • Any external trauma
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity
  • HIV/AIDS

DIAGNOSIS

A blood test is the only way to diagnose low testosterone level or reduction in the bioavailability of testosterone. Some men have a lower testosterone level without signs or symptoms. In this case, no treatment is needed but if serum levels of less than 300 nano gram per decilitre are considered to be low. Some of these signs and symptoms can be caused due to various underlying factors like - obstructive sleep apnea, thyroid problems, depression, diabetes etc. so a blood test is the only way to diagnose a low testosterone level.

Ayurvedic Treatment for PCOS - Diet & Home Remedies

Incidence of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is increasing now-a-days because of sedentary lifestyle, excessive intake of junk food, pollution, etc. The word “Syndrome” is used to describe PCOS because it is a complex manifestation involving many factors and organs such as—obesity, irregular menstrual bleeding, abnormal menstrual periods, insulin resistance, lack of ovum production etc. It causes worry as it is commonly found in reproductive age and it is thought to be one of the leading causes of female infertility. It is diagnosed in women when they are seeking medical advice for infertility as well as irregular menstrual bleeding, majority of these cases are treated by hormonal therapy or surgical intervention but PCOS can be taken care by Ayurvedic treatment, diet and home remedies.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition where hormonal imbalance affects the follicular growth during the ovarian cycle causing the affected follicles to remain in the ovary. The retained follicle forms a cyst and with each ovarian cycle, a new cyst is formed leading to multiple ovarian cysts.

The ovarian cycle is governed by a hormonal feedback system moderated by the hypothalamus, thus it requires constant feedback of hormones to properly regulate the release of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Lutenizing Hormone (LH) from the anterior pituitary gland. The hormonal feedback that the hypothalamus receives is due to the high levels of oestrogen that has been formed from free androgens in the peripheral tissue.

ORGANS INVOLVED IN POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME

  1. Ovary - The female gonad organ present at either sides of the uterus.
  2. Adrenal glands - These are present just above both the kidneys.
  3. Pancreas - It is a gland which produces insulin in the body.
  4. Pituitary Gland - It is a gland present just below the brain responsible for hormonal control.

PCOS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

Ayurveda suggests that PCOS is a disorder involving Pitta, Kapha Vata (Apana Vayu), Medas and Artav dhatu. Mainly gynaecological disorders are due to the imbalance of Vata dosha. The causes of PCOS according to Ayurveda are eating heavy foods that increase Kapha doshas in the body like - consumption of sweet, heavy foods, low digestion strength. Pushpagani Rewati mentioned by Master Kashyap in Ayurvedic texts bears some similarity with the symptoms of PCOS. When the deranged Vata vitiates the mamsa, shonita and meda mixed up with Kapha, they produce circular, raised and knotted inflammatory swelling called "Granthi". This type of glandular swelling is compared with the modern terminology known as - cyst which is an abnormal closed epithelium-lined cavity containing liquid or semi-solid material.

The biggest contributor of PCOS is the poor diet. Young women with PCOS tend to eat too much sugar or carbonized drinks and highly refined carbohydrates which causes unhealthy rise in insulin levels. This type of diet causes obesity thus aggravating PCOS. Women who are stressed tend to eat more food that are high in fat, carbohydrates and sugar in response to stress. Thus, it can be concluded that the modern stressful lifestyle and food habits are contribute in the development of PCOS. Ayurvedic treatment involves applying a multi-pronged approach towards correcting the hormonal imbalance, treatment to insulin resistance and treatment of obesity and avoiding high cholesterol levels.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME?

  1. The principal signs and symptoms of PCOS are - menstrual disturbance and elevated levels of male hormones known as - androgens. Thus, women complain of hair on face, acne, alopecia.
  2. Obesity
  3. Infertility due to improper ovulation
  4. Absence of menstruation/ scanty menstrual bleeding / abnormally high and irregular bleeding.
  5. Dark coloured band like skin lesion may be developed at the back of the neck, inner thighs and axilla known as acanthosis nigricans.
  6. Bilateral enlarged cystic ovaries are revealed when examined internally.

DIAGNOSIS

The diagnosis of PCOS is mainly based upon the clinical presentation together with USG (Ultra Sonography findings) and hormonal profile appropriate to mode of presentation.

  1. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) - Turmeric is a natural anti-biotic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor. Taking 1 tsp of turmeric with water empty stomach is an effective remedy for PCOS.

Periungual Warts - Causes & Ayurvedic Treatment

Periungual warts

Someone said, "Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live". Personal grooming and hygiene should be made a lifestyle not a duty. Keeping our hands clean at all times helps to ward off a lot of disorders. Dirty nails are a carrier for many organisms. Periungual warts are tiny eruptions around the nails and they can become a barrier in the normal nail growth resulting in splitting the skin around the nails. These warts may deface the nails and cuticle.

WHAT ARE PERIUNGUAL WARTS?

Periungual warts occur around the nails of fingers and toes. These warts are tiny but when they gradually grow and resemble a cauliflower and form clusters. Periungual warts usually damage the nail by lifting it from the skin. Loss of cuticle, paronychia, causing the nail to detach from skin are some complications that this disorder causes. These warts, in their initial stage are pin shaped in size, smooth, shiny and translucent. In the last stage, these periungual warts become inflamed, tender and fissured. These warts most commonly affect children and young adults as they are not very careful in maintaining good hygiene. It can enter through minor cuts. In case you bite your nails or cuticles, you're at a higher risk to get affected by Periungual warts. This virus is highly contagious. You can get affected by touching someone with this wart or using their stuff. People with low immunity are also at an escalated risk for developing Periungual warts.

WHAT CAUSES THEM?

  1. Periungual warts are caused by HPV or Human papillomavirus, particularly by strains 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 27, 57.
  2. Weak immunity
  3. Stress
  4. Unhygienic habits
  5. Lack of proper nutrition
  6. Direct contact
  7. Indirect contact

HOW ARE WARTS TREATED IN ALLOPATHY?

Viral warts, in the vast majority of normal individuals, resolve spontaneously. However, this may take several years and there is often considerable treatment. The majority of treatments are based on destruction of keratinocytes, irrespective of whether they are HPV infected or not.

Warts close to or under the nails may be a particular problem. Liquid nitrogen treatment may exacerbate them due to inflammatory swelling and skilled cutting of the nail and electrodesiccation or other destructive therapy, may be necessary.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Retroperitoneal Fibrosis - Symptoms, Diagnosis & Risk Factors

Retroperitoneal Fibrosis

Retroperitoneal Fibrosis is a disease characterised by the presence of inflammation and fibrosis in the retroperitoneal space. The disease process begins with the symptoms like - flank pain and unexplained weight loss. The inflammation starts surrounding the large artery known as - aorta that delivers blood from the heart to the rest of the body at the level just below the kidneys and progresses inferiorly towards the arteries that carry blood to the legs and outward towards the kidneys and surrounding structures ultimately leading to kidney failure. If the inflammation surrounds the ureter leading from kidney to bladder and blocks the flow of urine, this can cause kidney to fail. It is previously described as chronic periaortitis. It is a rare fibrotic reaction in the retroperitoneum that typically presents with ureteral obstruction. It is characterised by the development of extensive fibrosis throughout the retro peritoneum which are centred over the anterior surface of the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae resulting in obstruction of retroperitoneal structures, most notably the uterus. There is currently no treatment for peritoneal fibrosis in modern medicine because no controlled therapeutic trials have been performed. Optimal care in patients with RPF requires an integrated approach of surgical and non-surgical therapies. Modern medicine prescribes medicines like - glucocorticoids, immunosuppressive agents, estrogen receptor antagonists but the best way to treat retroperitoneal fibrosis is not known to the modern physicians.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF RETROPERITONEAL FIBROSIS?

  • Poorly localised, dull pain in the back or in the lower abdomen.
  • Low extremity edema
  • Fever
  • weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Anorexia
  • Deep venous thrombosis
  • Ureteric colic

This can also be associated with Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, etc.

DIAGNOSIS

The diagnosis of retroperitoneal fibrosis requires a high degree of suspicion. Examination in patients with retroperitoneal fibrosis includes the following findings:

  1. Hypertension: Present in 50% of affected individuals with RPF.
  2. Occasionally abdominal mass is present.
  3. Obstruction of the ureters with varying degree of renal insufficiency. It is the earliest and most common organ involved.

Laboratory tests for patients with RPF include the following

  • Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
  • C-Reactive Protein
  • Urine and Creatinine tests
  • Complete blood count
  • Alkaline phosphate levels
  • Anti-nuclear antibody levels
  • Urinalysis

Imaging tests:

  • Plain chest and abdominal radiography
  • Abdominal MRI
  • Kidney ultrasonography
  • Abdominal CT scanning

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS OF RETROPERITONEAL FIBROSIS?

  • Actinomycosis (Bacterial Infection)
  • Tuberculosis
  • Abdominal tumors
  • Occurs between the age group of 40-60 years
  • External beam radiation used in cancer treatment
  • Recent trauma of the abdomen or pelvis

RETROPERITONEAL FIBROSIS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

According to Ayurveda, this condition results due to the impairment of Vata and Pitta doshas in the body along with the impairment of body tissues. Ayurvedic herbs are quite helpful in this condition as they are a natural detoxifier and diuretic. This condition starts when inflammation and fibrosis of the abdominal aorta occurs. Painful Joint Conditions (Rheumatoid arthritis, Cervical Spondylitis, Osteoarthritis & Gout) - Ayurvedic Treatment

When two or more bones meet, joints are formed. Most joints including those of the limbs move freely and known as synovial joints. They are lubricated by synovial fluid secreted by the joint lining. The semi-movable joints like in the spine and pelvis are less flexible but more stable. A few joints such as those of the skull are fixed and there is no movement. There are 6 examples of synovial joints which are classified according to their articular surfaces (where bones meet) fit together and the movements each joint permit.

Joints can be damaged by many types of injuries or diseases including:-

  1. Rheumatoid Arthritis
  2. Osteoarthritis
  3. Gout
  4. Cervical Spondylitis

1. RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Rheumatoid Arthritis is the king of painful disorders affecting the musculo-skeletal system. It is a long standing auto-immune disorder that primarily affects the joints. The Rheumatoid affected joints are- usually hot, swollen and painful. After a period of rest, pain and stiffness worsen.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

What are the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis?

  • Tender/warm/swollen joints
  • Morning stiffness that may last for hours
  • Inflammation in the joints.
  • Development of the flap in synovium
  • Destruction of cartilage (cushioning between the joints)
  • Firm bumps of tissue under the skin on the arms (nodules)
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss

What are the causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis?

The causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis are not known but immunity plays a major role in its manifestation. There is a condition known as auto-immunity in which body's immune cells invade its own cells. It is like our soldiers fighting against our own people but Ayurvedic perspective of causes of rheumatoid arthritis is slightly different.

The nomenclature "Amavata" which has been derived from the two words-"Ama" and "Vata" seems to have been evolved around 9th century. The main cause of Amavata is altered state of digestion and metabolism caused by unhealthy food habits when there is diminished digestion power. Ayurvedic treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis involves improving digestion, immune-modulation and prescription of Ayurvedic medicines. The disease has been correlated with Rheumatoid Arthritis in modern terms, the cause of which has not been established by the modern system of medicine. Besides some short acting anti-inflammatory drugs or immune-suppressive drugs with hazardous side effects, there is no medicine for its radical cure.

2. OSTEOARTHRITIS

Due to changes in day to day lifestyle, the superiority of human health is falling. Dreadful changes in lifestyle have led to disorders like—obesity, arthritis, diabetes etc. Among these, osteoarthritis is observed commonly in large population. It is also prevalent in young generation. It is a degenerative disease. Osteoarthritis is a wear and tear disease involving abnormalities resulting in degradation of joint, articular cartilage and sub-chondral bone resulting in inflammation, aggravation of pain during and after movement.

Osteoarthritis

Pathology and Physiology of Osteoarthritis

  • Due to increased age, synovial fluid in joint gets decreased.
  • Due to friction of bony parts, erosion and inflammation of surrounding capsule, breakdown from cartilage is released into joint space.
  • Progressive erosions of articular cartilage and formation of bony overgrowth at joint margins due to calcification (osteophytes) in later stages.
  • Damage due to less protection by cartilage, cartilage becomes thin and soft due to degeneration.
  • Gross deformity and instability of joints.

Etiological Factors

  • Overweight (since it puts more pressure on the joints and can cause cartilage to tear between joints rapidly).
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Metabolic dysfunction
  • History of trauma which leads to misalignment or deformities.
  • Hereditary—mostly among females (knee and hand osteoarthritis)

What are the symptoms of Osteoarthritis?

  • Pain in joints (major symptom), sharp in nature, burning sensation associated with muscles and tendons.
  • Tenderness
  • Joint stiffness
  • Muscle spasm
  • Crackling noise
  • Loss of function or morbidity due to locking of joints.
  • Sometimes joints filled with fluid.

Diagnosis

  • By clinical methods and examination
  • In case of trauma, to rule out pathology, X-ray, CT-Scan and MRI are done.

Modern Treatment

  • Use of analgesics and steroids
  • Exercise
  • Weight control
  • Physiotherapy
  • Surgery

Osteoarthritis According To Ayurveda

Master Charak mentioned the concept of "Sandhigat Vata". According to Charak, by touching the swollen joints, it felt like as a leather sac is filled with air resulting in inability to extend and flex the limbs due to pain. Sandhi (joint) is a site of Shleshaka Kapha. As age increases, Vata dosha in the body increases and Kapha especially Shleshaka Kapha decreases, hence joints become less functional as vitiated Vata gets lodged in Sandhi (joints). Joint is considered as one of the Marma (vital point of the body), knee joint is also one of them. Joint is also among Vranasthana (site of inflammation). According to Ayurvedic treatment point of view, inflammatory changes are most important while considering Sandhi as "Vranasthana". In case of degenerative changes, treatment is given for improving nutrition, in case of obstructed pathology, vitiated Kapha is treated, then Meda (body fat) is corrected, then Vata dosha is treated. In this case, Snehana (intake of oil) or Abhyanga (application of oil) are contradicted in the initial stage.

Differentiating features of Osteoarthritis from Rheumatoid Arthritis

  1. Symptoms of osteoarthritis aggravated by humid and cold weather environment.
  2. Stiffness generally relieved by movement.
  3. Patient feels better with moderate use of joint but intensity of pain increases after prolonged use.

3. Gout

There are many joint related disorders explained in Ayurvedic texts of which grossly Vaatrakt signs and symptoms can be co-related with gout. Gout is known as "Vaatrakt" in Ayurveda. It usually affects greater toe. It is caused due to vitiation of Vata dosha along with blood vitiation. It is the most common cause of inflammatory joint disease in men over 40 years.

What are the symptoms of gout?

The great toe- metatarsophalangeal joint is the site of first acute gout attack in 70% cases. It can also affect ankle, knee, small joints of hand and feet. Sometimes the onset is very sudden waking the person from sleep. The affected joint is red, hot, swollen with prominent veins with severe pain.

Recurrent gout attacks lead to chronic gout. It leads to erosion of cartilage and bones. Severe joint deformities are also seen.

4. Cervical Spondylitis

It is a wear and tear disease which is caused by degeneration of bones, discs- cartilage cushion between the neck bones and joints of the neck. This condition is becoming common in young population also. With aging, the bones and the cushioning cartilage disc start to lose strength. This makes the soft cartilage to expand, thin, slip (known as herniation of disc), touch and irritate the nerves. The degenerating discs also become flat with bridge edge causing nerve irritation. Nerve irritation leads to symptoms like - pain, numbness etc. The stiffness arises because of lack of cushioning between the bones causing a friction whenever neck is moved. This condition is also known as - Cervical osteoarthritis, when the patient has active inflammation causing redness, swelling, increase in temperature etc.

Cervical Spondylitis

In Ayurveda, a condition known as Greeva graham is explained. It is explained as a Vata condition. Increase in Vata leads to depletion of body tissues. The dryness and degeneration caused by Vata leads to decrease of Kapha dosha. Kapha, mainly Sleshaka Kapha is responsible for cushioning between the joints. Hence, disc degeneration sets in leading to spondylosis.

What are the symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis?

  • Pain in the neck
  • Muscle spasm
  • Difficulty in the usual functions of the neck like—rotation, flexion, extension etc.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Pancolitis - Symptoms, Causes & Complications | Ulcerative Colitis

Pancolitis (also called Pan-ulcerative and total colon) is a type of ulcerative Colitis in which entire colon becomes inflamed and disease spreads throughout large intestine from cecum to rectum. It is a very severe type and chronic in nature.

The inflammation destroys the cells that normally line the colon wall. As a result, sores and ulcers develop in those damaged areas. Extend of inflammation may vary in degrees up into the upper parts of the colon. That's why it is important to know how much of the bowel in the disease is affected.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PANCOLITIS?

  • Blood Discharge in stool
  • Abdominal severe pain and cramps
  • Tenesmus - It is a sensation to pass stools, even though your bowels are already empty.
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Fever

WHO GETS PANCOLITIS?

The disease usually begins in people aged 15 and 30 although it can appear at any age. It seems that both men and women are equally affected by ulcerative colitis. Approximately 20% of patients present with Pancolitis.

types of ulcerative colitis, ulcerative colitis

WHAT CAUSES PANCOLITIS?

Abnormal activation of the immune system in the intestine: Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease. Normally the body's immune system protects you from infection. In autoimmune disorders, this goes away and the immune system attacks own healthy body tissues. In Pancolitis, tiny ulcers develop on the entire internal lining of the colon and these may bleed and produce pus.

Genetic factors: Ulcerative colitis does run in families. As many as one in five individuals with UC will have another family member with UC. Ten percentages of identical twins both develop UC. If you have Pancolitis, there is an increased chance that your children, brothers and sisters will also develop the disease.

Environmental factors: It includes intestinal infections, air pollution, certain diets, sanitation and hygiene, where you live in the world, and use of certain medications.

Certain foods and beverages can make the symptoms of Ulcerative colitis worse. These may include the following:

  • Dairy products
  • High fiber foods (like beans, bran, nuts and seeds.) and Vitamin B6
  • Alcohol
  • Fried items and fatty foods.
  • Caffeine
  • Carbonated beverages
  • Stress can make the symptoms of UC worse.

CAN PANCOLITIS CAUSE COMPLICATIONS?

Some patients do have complications in their skin, eyes, joints or liver as a result of their UC disease. People with pancolitis have a slightly higher risk of developing colon cancer than the general population. As a result, cancer screening with colonoscopy is recommended in all patients after the disease has been present for eight to 10 years.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE THERE FOR PANCOLITIS?

Pancolitis can be treated by medicines but sometimes surgery may be necessary. Some people also change their diet and lifestyle to support their medical treatment such as exercise, improving quality of sleep, reducing stress. There is not certain treatment in allopathy but Ayurveda has an excellent management for the same.

AYURVEDIC CONCEPT OF PANCOLITIS

From ayurvedic view point, pancolitis can be known as pittaj Grahani. Three fundamental energies (doshas: vata, pitta & kappa) should be in balance stage to get perfect health. Pitta type people are genuinely more –prone to have this. Here, Pitta dosha gets imbalanced, obstruct intestines and causes Pittaja Grahani. Excessive consumption of Pitta aggravating Foods (such as excess of spicy, pungent, acidic, sour, alkaline nature foods, food items which produces burning sensation in the body) damage both rakta dhatu (blood tissue) and mamsa dhatu (muscle tissue). This leads to formation of ama that gets deposited between the villi in the intestines, forming a smooth coating that impairs the normal function and immunity of the intestines. Later it becomes more extensive over time and effects the entire colon called Pancolitis.
