Ayurvedic Treatment of Levator Ani Syndrome

Levator Ani Syndrome is a painful and discomforting long-term condition in which the sufferers experience episodic rectal spasm. The periodic episodes of rectal and anus pain which the sufferers of this condition undergo is a result of the tightening of the muscles of the pelvic floor (also known as pelvic diaphragm). The pelvic floor is the broad muscle in the lower pelvis which provides support to the rectum, urethra and rectum, and also to the vagina and the uterus in women.

Since Levator Ani Syndrome -- which is also called 'Levator Ani Spasm Syndrome' -- is linked to spasm and tightening of the pelvic floor, this condition is a kind of non-relaxing pelvic floor dysfunction. The sufferers of this condition generally complain of discomfort, pain and pressure in the rectum, sacrum, and coccyx area.

According to estimates, Levator Ani Syndrome affects nearly 5.7 percent of males and 7.4 percent of females; with people aged between 30 and 60 years comprising more than 50% of the sufferers of this condition. The line of treatment in Levator Ani Syndrome is mainly focused on reducing pain and managing the symptoms of the condition.

Levator Ani Syndrome is a condition in which a muscle near the anus spasms and causes pain; but the exact cause of this condition is not clearly known. However, it is believed that the condition is apparently a result of chronic tension of the muscles of the pelvis floor. In addition, some of the other expected causes of Levator Ani Syndrome are:

  • Inflammation in the pelvic region
  • Injury to the pelvic floor due to trauma or surgery
  • ‘Atrophy’ or shrinking of the vagina
  • ‘Vulvodynia’ or pain in the vulva
  • Injury during childbirth
  • Surgery of Lumbar disc
  • Sexual abuse or sexually-related injuries
  • Continuing sexual activity despite pain
  • Irritable bowel syndrome, Interstitial Cystitis, Endometriosis, or other kinds of pelvic pain.

Pain in the rectum is the main symptom of Levator Ani Syndrome. This pain, high in the rectum, is not linked to bowel movements. It can be brief or occasional pain which may last for a few hours or days. The pain can be spontaneous and irregular; and may be triggered or worsened while sitting or lying down. The pain is so severe that it can interrupt sleep.

Along with rectal pain, some of the other symptoms of Levator Ani Syndrome are:

  • A sense of pressure in the rectum
  • Rectal tightness and muscle spasm
  • Constipation or Bloating
  • Urinary and bowel problems
  • Frequent urge to urinate; or inability to start the urine flow
  • Bladder pain
  • Pain in the tail-bone region
  • Painful urination, and
  • Urinary incontinence.

In order to diagnose Levator Ani Syndrome, doctors conduct a physical examination and diagnostic testing of the sufferers, and check out their medical history. Moreover, on the basis of the symptoms reported by the sufferers, certain tests are carried out to exclude other diseases which may be responsible for the symptoms. These tests include:

  • Blood test
  • Imaging tests
  • Stool sample
  • Endoscopic procedures

Levator Ani Syndrome is a chronic condition for which there is no known cure. The treatment of this condition chiefly focuses on managing the symptoms in a proper and timely manner, so as to reduce their severity and frequency.

Ayurvedic formulations -- prepared from pure and natural herbs -- can prove to be extremely effective in the management of the symptoms of Levator Ani Syndrome. Ayurvedic experts believe that the occurrence of Levator Ani Syndrome is linked to an imbalance in the body's three energies (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha); and, more specifically, an imbalance of a Vata sub-type ('Apaan Vata').

Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies for Agoraphobia Treatment

Agoraphobia is a kind of anxiety disorder in which an individual shows an extreme evasion of situations which can potentially lead to panic.

The term 'Agoraphobia' is a combination of two words --- 'Agora' which is a Greek word that refers to a place of assembly or market place; and 'phobia' which means fear. As such, the sufferers of Agoraphobia mostly have a hard time feeling safe in public places where there are large crowds.

In other words, people suffering from Agoraphobia anxiety disorder generally fear or avoid certain places and situations which they feel can trigger a panic attack. These places or situations may include use of public transportation, being in a crowded or enclosed place, being outside alone, or standing in a queue. This avoidance of situations and places by the sufferers of Agoraphobia typically results from the feeling of getting trapped or the fear of not being able to get help.

Most of the sufferers of Agoraphobia develop this disorder after suffering from one or more panic attacks in a particular situation. As such, they tend to avoid the possibility of another panic attack in the places or situations where it had previously happened; and they often need a friend, relative or any other companion to accompany them when they go to public places. The occurrence of Agoraphobia is more commonly reported in women as compared to men; with teenagers and young adults most affected by this disorder.

The treatment of Agoraphobia is usually very challenging because it mainly deals with helping the sufferers confront their fears about situations and places which can cause panic.

Though it is very difficult to pinpoint the exact causes which lead to the Agoraphobia anxiety disorder, some of the possible reasons for the development of this disorder include:

  • Genetics
  • Temperament
  • Environmental stress
  • Health conditions, and
  • Learning experiences.

Some of the most common indications of Agoraphobia disorder are:

  • Pounding heartbeat and rapid breathing
  • Feeling of getting choked or difficulty in breathing
  • Nausea or dizziness
  • Pain or pressure in the chest
  • Numbness, trembling, or shaking
  • Excessive sweating
  • Upset stomach or diarrhoea
  • Sudden flushing or chills
  • Feeling a loss of control
  • Fear of death.

There are certain factors which can potentially put a person at a high risk of Agoraphobia anxiety disorder. These risk factors are:

  • Any other phobia or panic disorder
  • Response to panic attacks with avoidance or excessive fear
  • A nervous or anxious temperament
  • Experiencing traumatic events in life, such as death of a parent, abuse, or attack
  • Feeling of isolation
  • Drug abuse or alcohol addiction
  • Blood relation affected by Agoraphobia.

Agoraphobia is a condition which can restrict the life activities of a person to a great extent, making it difficult for him/her to undertake routine day-to-day activities like visiting friends or relatives, running errands, and going to work or school. Hence, in severe cases of Agoraphobia, the sufferer of the condition may remain homebound for years, completely dependent on others for help.

In addition, Agoraphobia can also be associated with a few other complications, including:

  • Anxiety disorders or other mental health disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Depression
  • Alcohol or drug abuse.

The line of treatment generally prescribed by doctors for treating patients of Agoraphobia chiefly includes the use of medications and psychotherapy, to help the patients deal with the symptoms of the disorder and lead an enjoyable, anxiety-free life.

Ayurveda practitioners recommend the use of some extremely beneficial herbal formulations which can be very useful for managing the symptoms of Agoraphobia. These herbal formulations are safe and chemical-free, as they are prepared from 100% pure and natural herbs. Some of the commonly recommended herbal products for Agoraphobia are:

This herb is widely used by Ayurvedic experts because of its anti-oxidative, anti-ageing, immunity boosting, and anti-inflammatory properties; along with its proven effectiveness in maintaining the hormonal balance in the body. Ashwagandha capsules are a wonderful health supplement which can give a notable boost to memory power, thinking ability, awareness, and concentration.

For managing the symptoms of Agoraphobia, the recommended dosage of Ashwagandha capsules is: 1-2 capsules twice a day, with plain water, after meals.

4. Detox Tea:

Detox tea is helpful in balancing the body’s three ‘doshas’ --- Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It is prepared from several useful herbs which support effective blood circulation in the body, assist in different metabolic processes, and have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. These herbs are: Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa), Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna), Saunf (Foeniculum vulgare), Bari Elaichi (Ammomum subulatum), Taruni (Rosa centifolia), Dalchini (Cinnamon tamala), Chhoti elaichi (Elettaria cardamom), Bhumi Amla (Phyllanthus niruri).

Recommended dosage of Detox tea for Agoraphobia is: 1 capsule, two or three times a day.

The use of herbal formulations can be very helpful in keeping Agoraphobia symptoms from getting worse. This is an extremely crucial step in managing the anxiety disorder, especially because mental health conditions can be difficult to treat if not managed in a timely manner.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Bone Marrow Leakage

Bone Marrow Leakage is a condition in which a broken bone causes the fat tissue from the bone marrow -- the body's biggest producer of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets -- to leak into blood, and subsequently be carried all the way through the body via the bloodstream.

Fat tissue is one of the parts of the bone marrow, which is the soft, spongy tissue that is located within the hollow shafts of bones. At the place of the location of the bone marrow, a sponge-like network -- formed with fibrous tissue -- provides support to "primitive" cells called hematopoietic stem cells. The main sites of the bone marrow in the body are middle of the chest (sternum), the thigh bone (femur) and the hip bone (pelvis). Fat tissue is the main part of the bone marrow in the longer bones of the body, while it is comparatively much less is smaller bones.

The Bone Marrow Leakage problem generally does not lead to any other ailments, though it can be the causative factor behind a condition known as fat embolism syndrome (FES). The occurrence of FES is mainly an after-effect of major trauma which leads to the breakage of one or more large bones.

Although FES is a very rare condition resulting from Bone Marrow Leakage, it can lead to serious complications, like severe lung problems, seizures, drowsiness, and coma.

Some of the key reasons which can result in Bone Marrow Leakage are:

  • Breakage of bones / fractures
  • Trauma related to total joint replacement of the hip and knee
  • Bone grafting, leg-length correction operations and other surgical procedures in which the central section of long bones containing bone marrow is affected.

The common indications of Bone Marrow Leakage include:

  • Fat tissue enters blood stream after leaking from bone marrow
  • Damage to the Lung function if fat tissue reaches the lungs
  • Low count of platelets
  • Complications with the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) if fat tissue reaches the brain
  • Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) -- sudden failure of the respiratory system -- in severe cases.

The line of treatment generally followed by doctors for Bone Marrow Leakage patients is to minimize the symptoms of the condition, and to clear the fat tissue from circulation in the body by providing supportive care.

In case of patients suffering from FES due to Bone Marrow Leakage, doctors mostly recommend some common therapies, like stabilizing the broken bones, managing blood pressure, and assisting the patients with breathing by using a ventilator (in severe cases). In order to prevent the development of Bone Marrow Leakage into FES, the chief concern of the doctors is to quickly immobilize the broken bones.

For the benefit of the people affected by Bone Marrow Leakage, Ayurvedic experts have prepared some very useful herbal formulations. These formulations basically strengthen the bones, so that Bone Marrow Leakage can be prevented. However, if Bone Marrow Leakage occurs, the herbal formulations can be used for effectively managing the condition, so that the risk of FES is eliminated for the patients.

Ayurvedic treatment of MSA disease (Multiple System Atrophy)

Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a rare, neurodegenerative disorder in which the autonomic (involuntary) functions of the body -- including internal functions like breathing, blood pressure, muscle control, digestion and bladder function -- and the body movement are affected.

Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a progressive condition which leads to the atrophy (shrinkage) and deterioration of some parts of the brain, including cerebellum, brainstem, and basal ganglia. These parts are mainly responsible for regulating the internal autonomic functions of the body.

Several parts of the body are affected by Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), in which the affected people undergo a progressive loss of motor function. This condition typically develops in adulthood, generally by people aged between 50 and 60 years. Since this condition progresses gradually over time, it causes increasing difficulty for the affected people to carry out their day-to-day activities, and they are eventually confined to bed.

Multiple System Atrophy

There is no permanent cure for Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) because this condition does not go into remission. As such, the treatment of this disorder chiefly pertains to medications and lifestyle changes which can be useful in managing its symptoms.

The exact cause of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is still not known. Most of the cases of this disorder are 'sporadic', that is, they have a random occurrence. According to some researchers, this disorder is probably caused by a genetic component or by environmental toxins; but these theories have not yet been proved.

However, one of the distinguishing features of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is the build-up of a protein called alpha-synuclein in 'glia' --- the cells which provide support to nerve cells in the brain. More specifically, the accumulation of alpha-synuclein protein occurs in 'oligodendroglia', a cell which forms a coating on nerve cells to enable them to speedily conduct electrical signals.

One of the primary signs of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is 'postural (orthostatic) hypotension', a kind of low blood condition in which a person feels dizzy or lightheaded -- or may even faint -- while standing up from a sitting or lying down position.

In addition to orthostatic hypotension, some of the other general symptoms of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) are:

  • Slowness of movement
  • Lack of coordination
  • Stiffness of muscles
  • Tremors
  • Impaired speech
  • A hoarse, quivering voice
  • Constipation and loss of bladder control
  • Reduced production of sweat, saliva and tears
  • Sexual dysfunction like loss of libido
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Difficulty in controlling emotions.

Based on the symptoms of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), the condition is divided into two types:

  • Parkinsonian type (MSA-P)
  • Cerebellar type (MSA-C).

For the diagnosis of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), doctors first perform a brief neurological exam of the potential patient and take a clinical history; and then order several tests which include:

  • Autonomic testing (such as heart rate control and blood pressure control)
  • Assessment of bladder function
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET scan)
  • DaTscan.

The line of treatment for Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) patients chiefly revolves around medications and other solutions which can be beneficial for them in coping with the disorder.

For that purpose, Ayurvedic formulations prepared from pure and natural herbs can be very effective. As per Ayurveda, this condition involves an imbalance of the 'Vata' energy of the body. Due to the deranged 'Vata' energy, this condition slowly and progressively damages most parts of the sufferer's body.

Some of the most useful herbal formulations for the benefit of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) patients are:

1. Brahmi Capsules:

These capsules are prepared from the standardized extract of 'Brahmi' (Bacopa monnieri) herb. This herb has been known since ancient times for its capacity to enhance memory power and brain function. It can keep the brain healthy, boost memory, improve concentration, and manage blood pressure, stress and anxiety. It has anti-oxidant and anti-anxiety properties, and keeps the body strong and healthy.

The recommended dosage of Brahmi capsules recommended for the patients of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is: two capsules with plain water two times a day, after meals.

2. Arjuna Capsules:

For preparing these capsules, the bark extract of the 'Arjuna' herb (Terminalia arjuna) is used. This herb has proven capabilities in managing major heart problems as well as metabolic diseases which can potentially lead to heart weakness and heart failure. This powerful herb for heart care is considered a natural remedy for treating high cholesterol, blocked coronary arteries, blood pressure, high triglycerides, and congestive heart failure.

3. Gotukola Capsules:

‘Gotukola’ herbal extract (Centella asiatica) used for preparing these capsules is an excellent herb for balancing the body’s three energies --- Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Moreover, it can also balance the psychic energies of the body --- Satva, Rajas and Tamas. The use of Gotukola capsules can improve brain health, promote healthy blood circulation, maintain healthy metabolism, and manage depression, anxiety, and stress.

Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) patients should take 1-2 Gotukola capsules two times a day with plain water, 30 minutes after meals.

4. Ashwagandha Capsules:

These capsules are also a wonderful herbal formulation for the patients of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). Prepared from the standardized extract of 'Ashwagandha' herb (Withania somnifera), these capsules can relax the muscles and enhance mental capabilities. Moreover, this herbal product is also recommended for treatment of nervous breakdown, ageing, anxiety, stress, palpitations, and debilitating disorders.

Patients of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) should take one Ashwagandha capsule with plain water two times a day.

5. Curcumin Capsules:

Curcumin capsules are prepared from pure and natural extracts of the 'Haridra' herb (Curcuma longa). This herb -- commonly known as turmeric or haldi -- contains a bioactive compound called 'Curcumin,' and is widely known for its anti-inflammatory and blood-purification properties. It can reduce inflammation and treat microbial infections.

For the patients of Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), two Curcumin capsules are recommended with plain water, twice a day.

Ayurvedic formulations can be extremely beneficial for Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) patients in coping with their degenerative condition, and also in the prevention of some possible complications like breathing abnormalities while sleeping, breakdown of skin due to progressive immobility, injuries from falls resulting from poor balance, difficulty in swallowing, and vocal cord paralysis.
