Ayurvedic Treatment For Overactive Bladder With Herbal Remedies

When the bladder bursts…!

To be able to hold our pee is amazing. I mean, come on we all have immensely benefited from this imperium of ours. We all have at least once held our urge to urinate during important times. Things may or may not occur like this. But thankfully most of us are well equipped with the bladder control mechanism which makes it easy to live in a civilized environment. Have you ever thought about what it would be like if we lost this control over our bladder? Yes, such a vile condition exists and is known as overactive bladder (OAB). In OAB, a person loses their bladder control, leading to frequent urination, unable to hold the urge of urination for long, and sometimes an unexpected passage of urination without getting an initial urge (urgency incontinence).it is a condition that can immensely affect our social life and self-confidence. The key to cure lies in the accurate diagnosis of the primary cause. Some causes can be dealt with easily while others can be managed with the right measures.

Overactive Bladder

What are the chances of getting an overactive bladder?

The commonest cause of an OAB is psychological distress. When the mind is continuously under stress, it exhausts the body of its energy which sometimes leaves the body with no energy to gain power over its natural urges. You may have seen similar scenarios in you or people around you. People may experience temporary urine incontinence or loss of bowel control just before an exam or a job interview or anything that triggers panic in them. Not just stress but also chronic depression can eventually lead to physical exhaustion and in turn lead to loss of body control.

Many other causes can lead to the development of an overactive bladder. It includes weak pelvic muscles, nerve damage (due to herniated disc, radiation, pelvic or back surgery), some medications, beverages like alcohol and caffeine, estrogen deficiency after menopause, excess weight, and urinary tract infections. Food habits are also a major cause of concern for overactive bladder.

What are the problems faced by patients with overactive bladder (OAB)?

The symptoms of an overactive bladder include mainly urinary urgency and urge incontinence. Increased frequency of urination and nocturia also may manifest. However, the psychological distress encountered by the patient due to embarrassment must be addressed along with his/her physical condition. Psychological disturbances are a major concern in this disease. It's more nefarious than the physical conditions. Symptoms of the primary cause of OAB can also be seen in the patient, some may be psychological symptoms and some may be physical.

Ayurvedic view on overactive bladder (OAB)

Ayurveda considers mutra as a mala and as an Adharaniya vega, that is, an urge which should not be suppressed. Ayurveda emphasizes untimely micturition as a leading disease-causing factor. The disease can be manifested by suppressing the natural urges or intentionally initiating an urge in its absence. Treatment of urogenital issues caused by both causes is extensively explained in ayurvedic classics. OAB can be treated successfully using ayurvedic medicines in a very systematic way and without having any side effects. By using traditional knowledge along with modern advancement, OAB is no longer a matter of concern.

Treatment in brief for overactive bladder (OAB)

Collaborating with both modern techniques and ayurvedic medicine can help you regain your bladder control fast. Psychotherapy is an essential part of treating OAB, as the commonest reason is psychological stress. Psychotherapy can rule out or help in existing mental distress that caused this disease or can help you deal with the shame and embarrassment caused by this disease. Exercises like Kegel exercise and bladder training can help in increasing the duration of holding the urge for a long time. Along with Ayurvedic treatment such as internal medications, avagahana (sitz bath with medicated liquid) or/and Uttara basti (administration of medicated liquid into the urinary bladder through the urethra, etc. can aid you in your recovery.

What Is Bone Cancer And How Ayurveda Will Help You To Vanquish It

You are made up of cells that divide and increase on a daily basis. Cells generally die when they become dysfunctional or old. Cancer occurs when something starts to go wrong in this cycle, causing your cells to keep producing new cells while the old or malfunctioning ones do not die as they should. When cancer cells proliferate uncontrollably, they might push out normal cells. This impairs your body's ability to function normally. Cancer can develop from any part of your body, some parts are the commonest, some the rarest.

Bone cancer is a relatively rare kind of cancer. Most of the time, cancer does not originate in the bones; instead, it spreads from other regions of the body, such as the breast, lungs, or prostate, and is termed secondary breast CA. Cancer cells extracted from the bone might resemble the organ from which they came. Bone tumors don't have to be malignant all of the time. It may be a benign growth, which happens around half of the time. When cancer arises from the bone itself, it is referred to as primary bone cancer.

Bone Cancer

  • Osteosarcoma - This is the commonest type of bone cancer. The cells resemble early forms of bone-forming cells. It is most prevalent in teenagers but it can show up in any age group.
  • Chondrosarcoma - Second most common bone cancer. arises from cartilage cells, it rarely affects people below 20 years, and the risk of developing this cancer increase with age
  • Ewing sarcoma - Third most common type of bone cancer. It can arise from bone tissue or soft tissues around the bones. Most prevalent in children and teenagers, rarely seen in adults above their 30s.
  • Fibrosarcoma - Arises from soft tissues around the bone such as ligaments, tendons, or muscles. Most prevalent in older adults on their arms, legs, and jaw.
  • Chordoma - Cancer affecting spine and skull, more prevalent in adults above 30 years of old, particularly men. Cancer is slow-growing. It can eventually spread into the lungs, liver, and lymph nodes.

The majority of bone malignancies have no known cause. But possible causes can be;

  • Family history of bone cancer
  • Radiation exposure from imaging tests or radiation therapy for cancer
  • Certain rare genetic diseases (example: Li-Fraumeni syndrome, hereditary retinoblastoma)
  • Other diseases like Paget's disease of bone

  • The major symptom is the pain in the tumor's vicinity; however, this will not be persistent discomfort, as tumor growth pain may be continuous. Walking, lifting weights, and other activities that involve the usage of the bone might cause pain. Swelling in the area of the tumor
  • If the tumor is near a joint, then there will be joint pain, swelling, and stiffness
  • Limping due to bone pain or fracture
  • Weight loss, fever, anemia can also be present.

  • Imaging tests like x-ray, PET Scan, CT, MRI, etc.
  • Needle or surgical biopsies.

Treatment of bone cancer depends upon its type and stage which will be determined by your doctor. After the diagnosis, treatments suggested can be;

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Surgery

These treatments are used separately or together according to your condition.

Ayurveda can play a crucial role in cancer management and here is how;

  1. It can be used as an adjuvant with chemotherapy to lessen the adverse effects and lower the dose of medication while still providing the same benefits.
  2. It slows down the cancer progression.
  3. The antitumor activity of various Ayurvedic herbs (For example Ashwagandha and turmeric), is commonly employed in ayurvedic compound medications. These medicines improve the disease prognosis and also aid in the prevention of metastasis.
  4. Ayurveda is diverse in regards to its treatment techniques like internal medicine, internal therapies (purificatory therapies), external therapies, which if carefully coordinated and administered by a qualified physician can lead you to recovery.
  5. Use of ayurvedic medicine in the post-cancer stage can avoid recurrence in the future.

Telo-Extension Capsules - Telomere Lengthening Anti-Aging Herbal Supplement

Our DNA is very complex and difficult to understand. The structure of DNA is like a story and this story is like a master blueprint for life. It is true that our  DNA is like an inheritance which is being passed on to every individual from their parents. There are some beautiful lines on DNA that “it is the basis of life on earth, the thing that came from our parents with variations and is the master mind of every function and characters.” DNA is a unique, specific essence of our presence. This article is about a very small part of this DNA structure and its name is telomere. So, let’s get to know about telomeres and how their damage can be prevented.

Telomere and Aging

Telomeres are the specific DNA protein structures which are found at the both ends of each chromosome. These telomeres are responsible for protecting the genome from nucleolytic degradation along with unnecessary recombinations. The telomeres are also responsible for repairing the end strands of DNA and are responsible for interchromosomal fusion. Telomeres are also responsible for preserving the information which is present in our genomes. As the normal cellular process goes on, a small portion of telomeric DNA is lost with each cell division.

When telomere length reaches a critical limit the cell undergoes a process of deterioration with age. Therefore, telomere length serves as the biological clock for the determination of lifespan of a cell as well as an organism.

Certain factors which are associated with lifestyle or diet style can be responsible for expedite or early telomere shortening. This is because of the damage which is done by our wrong diet and wrong lifestyle.

Moreover, shortening of telomeres can also be associated with onset of a disease.

Telomeres are the DNA- protein complexes at the chromosome ends which are responsible for protecting the genomes from degradation and also from interchromosomal infusion. Telomeric DNA is associated with telomere binding proteins and a loop structure mediated by TRF2 protects the ends of human chromosomes against the exonucleolytic degradation.

Now the topic of discussion is how to prevent the degeneration of telomere at a faster rate.

In human life, everyone wants to live long and now after reading above you know that living long depends on the telomeres. So for the extension of telomere life and also for its regeneration Planet Ayurveda has its product named as Telo-Extension.

Let’s get to know about Telo-Extension in detail and also about its ingredients.

Telo Extension is a Planet  Ayurveda's patent product which is prepared using seven different herbs. These herbs are known to have an effect so deep that it can have its impact on Chromosomes and obviously on telomeres as well. The ingredients are one of the most famous herbs of Ayurveda and have a rejuvenating effect as well. Here rejuvenation stands for regeneration of cells and chromosomes as well. Now, coming to the next part of this article, explaining ingredients in detail.

  1. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
  2. Grapeseed (Vitis vinifera)
  3. Amla (Emblica officinalis)
  4. Moringa (Moringa oleifera)
  5. Pine Bark (Pinus longifolia)
  6. Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia)
  7. Rose Hip (Rosa indica)

Telo-Extension Capsules

Telo Extension, Capsules, Telomere Lengthening, Anti Aging, Herbal Supplement

1. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha is a very well known and effective herb of Ayurveda. The herb belongs to balya and bruhiniya gana which means its consumption provides strength to the body at cellular level as well as on chromosomal level. The herb is also known to be nourishing and the nourishment just doesn't run for dhatus or bodily tissues but deeper. Ashwagandha also has an impact on doshas which means it helps in maintaining the dosha stability which in turn reduces the chances of  onset of diseases. Thus helps in eliminating the factor responsible for telomere degradation at a faster rate. Even in cancer the herb has a great role as it balances kapha dosha which is responsible for cancerous growth and again helps in eliminating the factor responsible for telomere destruction. Hence ashwagandha justifies its part for being the first ingredient of the Telo-Extension.

2. Grapeseed (Vitis vinifera)

The grape seed is an amazing and very good agent that helps in improving the condition of the body. It can also reduce the oxidative damage done to various body parts by the free radicals.  Grape seeds are known to support the working of the central nervous system as well and prevent the atrophy with age as well. So, all these properties of grapes depict a very common thing and that grape seeds help in enhancing the life expectancy of cells and life expectancy of cells is only enhanced or increased when the process of damage is eliminated and telomeres are being protected.  This is what grape seeds are actually capable of rejuvenating, regenerating and giving protection effects on chromosomal levels. These seeds also help in inhibiting infectious agents. The herb is a very good agent for improving kidney function and reducing the risk of cancerous growths as well. Grape seeds also improve blood circulation and have an anti-inflammatory effect. In short, it helps in keeping dosha in balance thus protecting the body from chronic diseases and automatically increasing the life expectancy of cells and has an effect on chromosomal level as well.

3. Amla (Emblica officinalis)

Amla or amalaki is a herb belonging to the vyasthapak gana. Amla is a herb that has a great effect in rejuvenating the every minute molecule of the living body. The fantastic thing about this herb is that it has a great role in boosting the immunity of the body as it helps in balancing all three doshas as well as being an immunomodulator as well. Amla is even termed as a herb which can be used in say 100 ways to treat 100 different types of conditions. As the herb is known to protect the body cells from the damage caused by free radicals then in a direct way it is also having effect on a chromosomal level as it is also protecting chromosomes from the effect of free radicals as well. This plant has a great effect on digestion as well. Digestion is maintained using this herb very well. Maintaining digestion means no accumulation of endotoxins, no accumulation of endotoxins means smooth functioning of the body and hence no fasten up process of telomere destruction.

4. Moringa (Moringa oleifera)

Moringa is a herb that is widely used in India especially in South India. It is used in preparation of many dishes and gives exotic taste. But, the herb has more benefits than just being an ingredient for some dishes. Moringa is known to enhance the extension of telomeres. Telomeres, as mentioned before, are likely to degrade with age and if any diseased condition is going on inside the body then its degradation becomes faster. Moringa here, helps in even recovering from cancer. It is proven by many studies that natural herbs like moringa have cytotoxic  properties towards cells and give very great results as a cell rejuvenator. It also has its effect on telomere extension as well because of its rejuvenating and regenerating effect on cells.

5. Pine Bark (Pinus longifolia)

Pine bark (Pinus longifolia) extract is known to be rich in certain constituents that have their effect on the major system of the body. It has procyanidins which have great effect on the cardiovascular system, catechins that have a role in protecting the body from harmful effects of  antioxidants and phenolic acids that are known to protect cells from free radical oxidation. Obviously, a herb with these benefits deserves to be the part of telo extension formulation as protecting cells means protecting telomeres present on the ends of chromosomes situated inside the nucleus of the cell.

6. Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia)

Giloy or Guduchi is a herb which is known as the magical herb of the Ayurveda. This herb belongs to the vyavasthapak gana which means a group of herbs that are known to enhance life expectancy. Giloy is known for its magical effect on the body. For giloy, a very beautiful line is said that giloy is the amrit for life and yes indeed it is. Giloy is known to act inside the body in a way which is required by the body itself. That’s why it is termed as vichitravirya. The herb is known to enhance the immunity of the body hence strengthening the immune system or defence system of the body. There is no molecule in the living body on which guduchi can not work and that includes telomeres as well.  That’s why the herb is called amruthaballi as well.

7. Rose Hip (Rosa indica)

Roses are usually the symbol of love but in this case they are the symbol of love not for anyone else but for your telomeres. It’s a very simple line with deep meaning and in the same way roses seem beautiful but bears magic within those lovely red petals. The Ayurvedic text mentions that rose is known to balance the fire element inside the body that means it balances the thermal energy inside the body.  As we all know that heat can make things but over heat can destroy things too. Same is the case inside the human body, when the thermal energy is in stable form it can be beneficial for the body but when this energy is not stable it gives rise to conditions which can create an environment inside the body resulting in faster telomere degradation. That’s where this beautiful flower comes in action and helps in stabilising many functions in the body with its pungent, bitter, astringent and sweet taste. This makes it a perfect balancer for kinetic and potential energies, that’s how rose hip justifies its role in Telo-Extension.

1 capsule twice daily with plain water after meals.

The telomere is a very important part of our DNA and to protect it one must start from the necessary modifications in your diet and lifestyle. It’s damn important to understand what you can eat and what you need to avoid. So, if you don't even think about your digestion then do think about your telomere and it’s sure that you won’t eat things you are not supposed to eat and you will not live in the way you are not supposed to live. The causes in this situation are difficult to diagnose but Ayurvedic text suggests very interesting causes. It is explained that mostly the causes of infertility starts from the unhealthy lifestyle and diet style people follow these days. In addition, such habits lead to vitiation of doshas. Dosha aggravation then can result in primary infertility in which the female has not been pregnant before or secondary infertility, in which at least one prior pregnancy was achieved.

Now, coming back to Fetipush Capsules by Planet Ayurveda. As the name of the formulation suggests, it is prepared to push a female towards fertility by toning her reproductive system, balancing her imbalance hormones and balancing doshas.

Vidarikand is a perennial plant which is also known as Indian kudzu. The tubers of these herbs are mostly used as an immunity booster as well as a restorative tonic as well. Movement in the opposite direction here means pratiloma gatti of vayu. The infertility can also be due to accumulation of ama dosha in the body and vidarikand help in eliminating the endotoxins as well by improving the digestive fire. Vidarikand is known to behave as a rasayan as well. Vidarikand is known to have balya effect which means it provides strength to the body.

Basically, putranjiva is a herb that has a detoxification effect on the uterus and makes the uterus capable of continuing the pregnancy. The herb also helps in improving the ovarian functions so that healthy, matured eggs can be formed.

Migraine Treatment in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

Migraine is a severe form of headache which affects approximately 19% of the population. Women are more prone to this condition as compared to men. It is a throbbing type of headache, cases of which are increasing reportedly. This rise in the number of cases is estimated to be a result of the raised levels of stress in the day to day life. It presents various symptoms which will be discussed in the following article. The migraine is affected by various triggers such as light sensitivity, excessive stress, etc. In the following article, the migraine will be discussed in detail in both the perspectives i.e. The Ayurvedic description as well as the modern approach.

Migraine, Headache

Migraine is a severe type of headache. The person experiences severe throbbing pain in one half of the head. It is a genetically complex condition characterized by episodes of pain that can be moderate to severe. The term “Migraine” is derived from a term ‘hemikrania’ which refers to pain affecting one side of the head. The pain of migraine occurs in episodes. There are recurrent episodes of pain that are accompanied with nausea, vomiting, etc. Migraine is a common cause of inability to work and hence, a disturbed life.

The exact causes of migraine are not known yet. The genetic component or family history is seen to make the person prone to migraine. Still, the exact mechanism that leads to migraine is not explained yet. There are estimations about various trigger factors that result in an episode of migraine. Some of the most common triggers are- Smoking, stress, excessive or insufficient sleep, alcohol addiction, exposure to bright light, etc. Some other factors may also aggravate the condition such as high temperature, strong smell, late sleeping, fasting, etc.

The symptoms of migraine will differ from patient to patient. The migraine is presented as a severe throbbing pain in one side of the head. It occurs in episodes. The episode may last from minutes to hours. The pain is mostly so severe that the person becomes incapable of performing the daily tasks during the time of the episode. The symptoms of migraine are classified in stages according to the occurrence and type of symptoms. The stages are as follows-

  1. Without Aura Migraine - It is a recurrent attack of migraine which lasts from four to 72 hours. It affects one side of the head. The pain is pulsating in nature. The severity of the pain may be moderate to severe. The attack of migraine is aggravated by physical activity. The patient suffers nausea, light and sound sensitivity.
  2. With Aura Migraine - These are reversible attacks that last for minutes. The migraine attack is accompanied with the one of the following features in one side of the head- visual, speech, retinal, etc. usually accompanied or followed by migraine symptoms.

The migraine is diagnosed on the basis of the symptoms the patient presents as well as the laboratory diagnosis. The clinical evaluation will include the examination and observation of the symptoms of the patient. The laboratory diagnosis will include CT scan (Computerized tomography scan), MRI (Magnetic Resonance Therapy), various blood tests, etc.

The treatment of migraine will include various medications such as analgesics (pain relievers), anti- emetics (that help to decrease nausea or vomiting), NSAIDs, etc. The patient is advised to make some healthy moderations in his/ her lifestyle. These changes will include practicing yoga, regular exercise, relaxation therapy etc. The patient should always try to avoid the triggers of the migraine. He/ she is advised to rest in a dark and quiet room.

The Ayurveda presents a very unique perspective regarding the condition of migraine. The illness of migraine can be correlated to ardhavbhedak in the Ayurvedic literature. Ardhava bhedhak is described in Sushruta samhita Uttara tantra 25. (According to -Su.Ut. 25/15) Ardhavabhedak is described as a condition which presents the following features. The patient suffers pain in half of the uttam anga (that is used as a synonym for Shir (head)). The nature of pain is throbbing and pricking (it feels like hundreds of needles are piercing the head) type. He/ she experiences brahma (can be correlated to disturbed conscious levels). The attack of ardhavbhedak will occur without any known cause. This episode occurs either after every ten days or fifteen days. It is a result of imbalance of the levels of all the three doshas (i.e. the vata, pitta, kapha). The main cause of ardhawa bedak is believed to be the imbalance of vata dosha. The vata dosha further creates imbalance in the levels of pitta and kapha dosha. The patient feels relief when a hot/ warm touch is applied. Herbal Remedies For Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis was earlier called Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. It is the most common arthritis occurring in children below the age of 16. The major complaints occurring in Juvenile idiopathic arthritis or JIA are swelling, stiffness and pain in joints. Symptoms may be present for a few months in some children while in others it can be for many years. However JIA should not be taken lightly as in some cases it can cause serious complications like eye inflammation, growth problems and damaged joints. This write up is all about JIA and its Ayurvedic management and treatment.

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Juvenile arthritis is represented by the inflammation of one or more joints which tends to occur before 16 years of age. Girls are more prone to get affected by JIA than boys and mostly the teenagers or preschool aged children are affected by it. Signs and symptoms of JIA depends upon the type of the disease one is suffering from. Timely diagnosis and correct treatment can help in getting out of JIA and have a good prognosis, however in certain cases complications may arise.

According to Ayurveda the three doshas, i.e. Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha govern the health of a human being and it is necessary to be in equilibrium in order to have proper health. Imbalance of any of the three dosha can result in various diseases. Here in JIA Vata dosha starts to get accumulated in the body because it cannot be eliminated naturally from the body owing to certain reasons like hereditary factors, improper diet or sedentary lifestyle. This accumulation of Vata dosha results in inflammation of the joints and their related signs and symptoms.

The common signs and symptoms of JIA are:

  • Pain - A child would complain about the pain in the joints or if they do not tell you to notice the limps (without any injury) especially when he/she gets up from the bed after a nap or in the morning.
  • Swelling - Swelling of affected joints is commonly seen mainly first noticed in the bigger joints like knee joints.
  • Stiffness - Walk of the child becomes clumsy especially when getting up after a long rest like after sleep.
  • In certain cases high grade fever, rashes on the upper body or swollen lymph nodes can be seen. These complaints become worse in the evening.

Just like other types of arthritis, there will be times when symptoms are fully flared up and sometimes symptoms can be minimal.

The exact cause of JIA or Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is not known. It is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system of the body attacks its own cells and tissues causing damage to them. Certain environmental and hereditary factors are responsible for it.

There can be many reasons for joint pain which needs to be ruled out in case of diagnosis JIA. Certain tests are required to do so like ESR, C-reactive protein, Antinuclear antibody, Rheumatoid factor, X-rays and MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging).

Conventional treatment for JIA includes a combination of medicines that are used to relieve swelling, pain, stiffness improving function of the joint and minimizing the damage to the joint. Medications include Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, Corticosteroids etc. However all of these medications have certain side effects which can interfere with normal growth of a child and decrease immunity.

Ayurvedic treatment aims at annihilating the disease from root cause without causing any harm to the body. Medicines in Ayurveda are prepared from herbs which possess natural healing properties and can be taken even for a long time without any harm. Herbal remedies balance the tridosha and restore health.

Planet Ayurveda is a renowned herbal pharmaceutical company that deals in production and further their prescription to patients as per the ailments. All the medicines and products are purely herbal and vegetarian and free from chemicals, preservatives, additives, fillers, dye, chemicals, yeast etc. Owing to this fact these herbal medicines are very safe to be used by any person of any age. This disease is correlative with rakta vaha srotas dushti. The signs and symptoms are all of rakta vaha srotas dushti. The long time consumption of pitta prakupita ahar may lead to getting pitta parakupita and prakupitta pitta may lead to dushit rakta which develops this disease.

Following are the causes of this disease

Clotting in the body may be due to many reasons

  1. Surgery is one of the main causes of this disease which leads to the formation of clots in the body. Bed rest after the surgery is the main cause.

The preventions of this disease are more useful and should be practiced by each and every patient. The more patient is lethargic, the more he will experience the symptoms. Means if most of the time patients lie on bed he will be more prone to brain stroke and other don't be lethargic the more the exercise more the chances to prevent this disease. Patients should get out of the bed and have a healthy walk while being ill. Timely diagnosis of this disease and proper treatment may also be very helpful for this disease. There are many hand practice therapies which are performed on patients and they help to reduce the size of clots. These therapies are also helpful by which the clot does not break and the patient does not lead to serious problems and complications of deep vein thrombosis. There are also many exercises for deep vein thrombosis that are knee pulls. By bending the knee and raising the knee upwards may help in preventing the disease. Ankle circles may be good exercise for blood flow. Wearing the stockings is the most effective criteria for swelling and inflamed skin. • Smoking is one of the factor
  • Being seated in long hours jobs
  • Being hereditary to clotting in body

Diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis is one of the most helpful criteria. The physical examination of this disease is very important. On physical examination the area of skin gets warmed and becomes reddish.

Ultrasonography is helpful in showing the blood flow in the arteries and veins which shows the thickness of blood. Venography is one of the most popular and effective diagnostic methods which shows the exact location and number of clots in the body. A dye is inserted by which the veins are most easily visible and clots also. D-Dimer is the blood test which helps to measure the substance which is released by clots. Mainly this test is performed for the presence of clot whether it is present or not.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Osteopenia

Bone density is maximum at the age of 30 that varies according to the sex and genetic background. After this age the bone minerals start resorbing into the blood as a natural process of aging. Due to this the bone density and minerals in the bone start decreasing and bones become brittle and can break easily. The bone density is measured through a Bone mineral density (BMD) test in which a T-score of between -1 and -2.5 indicates Osteopenia. It is considered as a midpoint between having healthy bones and osteoporosis. Here in this article, we are going to discuss Osteopenia and its Ayurvedic treatment.

Osteopenia is a condition that occurs due to the lower bone mineral density than normal.  The bones become weaker and easy to break. Total bone density peaks at the age of 30 and further starts decreasing with age. A person with a T-score of between -1 and -2.5 is considered to have osteopenia. T-score below -2.5 indicates osteoporosis. People having osteopenia are at a higher risk of osteoporosis. Osteopenia happens when the body gets rid of more bone than it is creating. Usually it shows no symptoms but there is more risk of fractures.

In Ayurveda, every disease is explained on the basis of Tridosha (Vata,Pitta, Kapha). Any vitiation in the balance state of the doshas leads to a disease state. Low bone mineral density can be correlated with Asthi kshaya. Asthi dhatu (bone tissue) is the dhatu (tissue) formed after Meda dhatu (adipose / fat tissue) and a precursor of Majja dhatu (bone marrow). For the formation of healthy Asthi dhatu (bone tissue), its precursor dhatu should have formed perfectly. Asthi dhatu kshaya (bone tissue depletion) is closely related to osteopenia. If there is any pathological increase or depletion of Asthi dhatu (bone tissue) and its precursors, it will have a bad impact on the formation of next dhatu and this results in the reduction in bone mineral density. It is due to the Agni Vikriti (metabolic disturbances) that leads to the Ama (endotoxins) formation which further block the body channels (Srotas) carrying nutrition and results in inadequate nutrition or ahara rasa to the tissues including bone tissues (Asthi dhatu).

If we talk about Dosha involvement then there is a vitiation of Vata dosha in osteopenia which depletes the asthi dhatu in the body causing low bone density.

Osteopenia is the loss of bone mineral density and is a common precursor of osteoporosis.

Some of the common causes and risk factors for osteopenia are -

  • Post-menopausal Women - During reproductive age women produce estrogen hormone from their ovaries. After menopause decline of this estrogen leads to bone mineral loss.
  • Genetics - Most of the people are genetically predisposed to osteoporosis and osteopenia.
  • Aging - Bone mineral loss is a normal feature of aging.

  • Excessive smoking
  • Excessive stress
  • Crash dieting and eating disorders
  • Excessive tea, coffee, soda, chocolate or sports and energy drinks
  • Young female athletes with amenorrhea and eating disorders. These women have lower fat percentage, lower body weight, and higher incidence of asthma. These factors increase the risk of osteopenia.
  • Teenage pregnancy

  • People on long term steroids are at high risk of bone mineral loss.
  • The person treated for Chronic inflammatory diseases such as Arthritis, or Lupus, Lymphoma, Leukemia, organ transplant, cancers are at risk of lowered bone mineral density.
  • Anorexia and bulimia
  • Asthma
  • Vitamin B 12 deficiency
  • Cancers
  • Celiac disease
  • Ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, and other inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Malabsorption syndromes
  • Chronic kidney disease or patients on dialysis
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Cushing’s syndrome leading to excess steroids
  • Diabetes
  • Liver disease, lactose intolerance
  • Patients with Multiple myeloma, polio, Osteo-genesis imperfecta, Sickle Cell anemia, Skin disorders, Thalassemia.

Osteopenia usually has no symptoms and commonly it is not detected unless a person -

  • Has a bone density test
  • Experiences localized bone pain or weakness in an area of a broken bone also known as osteopenia pain.

Osteopenia and osteoporosis are two very similar health conditions, but osteoporosis is more severe than osteopenia. In both conditions there is a depletion in bone density, but the depletion in osteopenia is to a lesser extent than osteoporosis. A person with Osteopenia is prone to osteoporosis and has a risk of breaking a bone due to bone fragility. Bone density is measured with  DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) test. The results of this test are provided with a value of T-score -

  • +1 to –1 indicates normal bone density.
  • –1 to –2.5 indicates osteopenia.
  • –2.5 or lower means osteoporosis.

Complications of osteopenia may include -

  • Increased risk of further bone deterioration that leads to osteoporosis.
  • High risk of bone fracture.

Due to a lack of symptoms, it is difficult to diagnose osteopenia until a peson go for a bone density test.

Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA)

DEXA usually measures bone density levels in your spine, hip, finger, wrist, shin, or heel. DEXA test compares the density of your bone to the density of a 30-year-old person of the same sex and race. The result of a DEXA measure in T-score.

Your doctor would diagnose osteopenia if you have a T-score between -0.1 and -2.5.

In modern Medicine, the goal of treating osteopenia is to prevent it from further developing into osteoporosis. They will give you calcium and vitamin D supplements or some hormonal replacement therapy along with lifestyle changes.

Ayurvedic management of osteopenia is done with herbal medicines and some Panchakarma procedures like Vamana, Virechena, Vasti, Nasya. As in osteopenia there is an aggravation of Vata dosha so the herbs which pacify the vata dosha are used in the treatment along with ksheera Vasti, Sneha vasti and also the correction of Agni (digestive fire) is done along with the removal of toxins from the body.
