So Ayurveda manages aggravated Vata doshas and eliminates ama doshas to get relief from this problem.

In this modern age, cancer remains a great threat to the society and Ayurvedic science can significantly help the patients to cope up with this dreadful disease and can be used as an adjunct to alleviate the symptoms associated with the conventional therapies such as nausea, pain, fatigue, etc.

These days cancer is increasing because we have polluted our food, lifestyle and even our mental status is also polluted. These negative energies have become part of our body which cause multiplication of cancer cells and cause cancer.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer which is a very serious condition. It develops in the cells that produce melanin pigment. It is a pigment which is responsible for giving skin, eyes and hair their color.

melanoma, skin cancer

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MELANOMA?

Melanoma can develop anywhere in the body but they mostly develop in the areas which are exposed to the sun such as the face, arms, legs.

In people with darker skin, it can also develop in those areas which don't receive any sun exposure such as soles of the feet, fingernail beds, palms of the hands etc.

The Symptoms Are:

  • A change in an existing mole
  • The development of pigmented skin
  • Unusual growth on the skin

HOW IS MELANOMA DIAGNOSED?

The only way to accurately diagnosing melanoma is biopsy which is done by removing the suspicious growth or mole. The pathologist then analyzes the sample.

TREATMENT

In modern medicine, the treatment for early-stage Melanoma is surgery. Sometimes, Melanoma is very thin which can be removed by biopsy and no further treatment is required. When it spreads to other body organs including lymph nodes, affected nodes may also be removed. Other treatments such as Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Biological therapy etc. are recommended.

The science of Ayurveda has deep roots and presents a great opportunity for battling the global burden of cancer. Seeking out and researching plant-based agents that have a long history in the traditional system can be more effective.

In Ayurveda, there is a mention of various herbs that are useful in the treatment of Melanoma or skin cancer. In Ayurveda, it is believed that cancer is caused due to the vitiation of all the three doshas Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

In Ayurveda, it is also mentioned that the cause of all the diseases is srotas avrodh means blockage of channels.

srotas avrodh, cause of all the diseases

Why are you waking with Neck Pain and what can you do for it

Now- a- days, it is seen that neck pain has become a common spinal problem. Though the degeneration of cervical vertebrae is most commonly seen in elderly people, but its prevalence is increasing in the early age such as below 30 years of age.

Due to continuous sitting posture, working on computers perpetually, lack of exercise, etc. are some of the atrocious components of current lifestyle. Occupation and wrong lifestyle are the major risk factors as neck muscles are strained due to the wrong posture. Osteoarthritis is a common cause of neck pain.

WHAT IS THE AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE OF NECK PAIN?

According to the Ayurvedic perspective, neck pain is known as Grivastambha. It is among the 80 types of Vata Vyaadhi which is also characterized by Stambha (stiffness) in the neck region along with pain.

In Ayurveda, it is believed that the main etiological factor for the development of Manyastambha is the vitiated Vata and Kapha dosha.

When Vata dosha gets aggravated, it causes the depletion of the body tissues. Since Vata dosha has cold and drying qualities, it leads to the decrease in the cushioning fluid as well as the connective tissue between the joints that are ruled by the Kapha dosha.

vata qualities, Astang Hridyam Sutrasthanam, Chapter No. 1, Shloka No. 10

Reference: Astang Hridyam Sutrasthanam, Chapter No. 1, Shloka No. 10

Meaning: In this shloka, the qualities of Vata dosha are explained. Vata is dry, light, cold, rough, minute and mobile in nature.

2. Massage

Gentle massage with oil such as sesame oil or Mahanarayan oil is quite effective. Violent massage with deep pressure is not recommended. Gentle massage over the muscles of the neck and shoulder joints should be done.

3. Triphala Powder

At night, medicines that act as purgatives should be taken. Triphala powder is the best medicine for the reduction of neck pain. One teaspoonful of Triphala powder with lukewarm water should be taken at night twice a week.

4. Hot Fomentation

Hot fomentation on the vertebrae of the neck is quite effective in neck pain. For fomentation, take a clean and dry cloth; add about 500 grams of salt in it. Tie the cloth and heat it in a frying pan till it becomes tolerably hot but care should be taken that it should not be too hot. Hot fomentation should be done for half an hour once a day. After fomentation, the affected part should not be exposed to cold wind. Take fomentation at bedtime and the patient should go to sleep by covering the affected part.

5. Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Ginger is one of the best home remedies for neck pain. It has anti-inflammatory and Vata dosha balancing properties. It is also a potent analgesic in neck pain. For neck pain, use ginger in cooking as it acts as an effective pain killer.

6. Turmeric Milk

Taking warm turmeric milk with 1 teaspoon of desi ghee (clarified butter) is also very effective in reducing pain. Turmeric is a natural anti-biotic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory in nature. Desi ghee helps to remove unctuous very easily.

DIET AND LIFESTYLE

In most cases, neck pain is due to poor posture combined with wear and tear related to age.

  • Keep your head centered over the spine.
  • Taking frequent breaks from long working hours on the computer is also helpful.
  • Quit smoking as there are high chances of developing neck pain.
  • Yoga postures such as Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Dhanurasana (Bow Pose) and Matsyasana (Fish Pose) are extremely beneficial for neck pain.
  • The sleeping posture should be in such a way that the neck and head should be aligned with the body. Use of a small pillow under the neck is useful.
  • Regular and gentle body massage with lukewarm sesame oil is also recommended.
  • Avoid the intake of sour, pungent, citrus fruits, highly acidic foods and foods that increase Vata dosha such as aerated drinks etc.
  • Avoid the intake of protein-rich diet because it can interfere with the absorption of calcium.
  • Regular Meditation is also essential as it keeps the stress at bay. Stress is one of the main reasons for the aggravation of Vata dosha.

AYURVEDIC HERBS FOR THE TREATMENT OF PARKINSON'S DISEASE

In Ayurveda, the term "Kampavata" is used for Parkinsonism or Parkinson's disease. Kampa means tremor and Vata is humor that controls air and all movements of the body. This disease is caused by aggravated Vata  dosha in the body, which produces aggravated air in the brain. This aggravated air affects the area of the brain that controls involuntary movements and leads to the development of Parkinsonism.

The principle of Ayurveda is to achieve the balance of the three doshas (Vata, Kapha, and Pitta) in the body. It provides several herbs that treat Parkinson's disease, naturally without any side effects.

Following are some of the Ayurvedic herbs used to treat Parkinson's disease:

1. Kaunch Beej (Mucuna pruriens)

This herb is one of the best herbs for the treatment of Parkinson's disease.  It possesses neuro-protective activities, which shows excellent results in Parkinson's disease. The Kaunch Beej contain levodopa that is a precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine plays an important role in perception, sleep disorders, mood, learning, involuntary movements, and working memory. Therefore it is very effective for the central nervous system.

2. Vacha (Acorus calamus)

This herb acts as a brain tonic. It promotes the functions of the nervous system. Vacha penetrates deep into the brain tissues and remove toxins from the subtle channels in the mind and opens the nadis of the higher chakras. It also treats headache, laziness, mental stress, and emotional imbalance, etc.

3. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)

Brahmi is known as the best brain tonic. The active compound of Brahmi is bacosides, due to which it works wonderfully on brain health. Brahmi promotes the regeneration of cells of the brain.

Reference:- Bhav Prakash Nighantu/ GuduchyadiVarga/ Shloka no. 280-281

This shloka explains about the properties of Brahmi. Brahmi eases motion. It helps in boosting brain strength, acts as a Rasayana, increases lifespan, maintains vocal cords. Along with this, it also increases the concentration, helps in skin and blood disorders. Brahmi is also helpful in jaundice, diabetes, cough, swelling, and fever. It also acts as an anti-dote.

4. Bala (Sida cordifolia)

It possesses analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycemic properties. It acts as a diuretic and stimulates the function of the central nervous system.

5. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

This herb is also considered as the nervine tonic. It helps to calm the nervous system. This herb is very useful in problems like anxiety, stress, depression, etc. Ashwagandha has anti-oxidant properties and boosts the immune system.

6. Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus)

Shatavari possesses anti-oxidant property due to which it is good for depression. It works on the brain by impacting on neurotransmitters of the brain.

7. Ginkgo biloba

This herb helps to improve cognitive function and stimulate circulation and promote blood flow to the brain.

8. Gotu kola

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) - Top 10 Natural Remedies !!

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS: OVERVIEW

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder which chiefly affects the joints of the body. It is an autoimmune condition, in which the immune system of the sufferer's body attacks the 'synovium' --- the lining of the membranes, surrounding the joints.

Rheumatoid Arthritis leads to the thickening of the 'synovium,' because of which the cartilage and bone within the joint eventually get destroyed. Over a period of time, the joint loses its shape and alignment due to the weakening and stretching of the tendons and ligaments, that hold the joint together.

In early stages of its occurrence, Rheumatoid Arthritis generally affects the smaller joints first, especially the joints which attach the fingers to the hands and the toes to the feet. As the condition progresses, the joints of the wrists, elbows, knees, ankles, hips and shoulders also get affected.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

With the increase in the severity of Rheumatoid Arthritis, the disorder can also cause damage to some non-joint structures, including the skin, eyes, blood vessels, lungs, kidneys, heart, salivary glands, nerve tissue, and bone marrow.

CAUSES OF RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

The exact causes, triggering the occurrence of Rheumatoid Arthritis are not yet known clearly to the medical practitioners. Nonetheless, it is believed that this autoimmune condition seemingly has a genetic component. Though the genes cannot actually cause Rheumatoid Arthritis, they can potentially increase the risk of the condition, by making people susceptible to certain environmental triggers.

Some common environmental factors that can cause Rheumatoid Arthritis are:

  • Viral infections, such as those associated with the Epstein-Barr virus
  • Exposure to certain types of bacteria, like those linked to periodontal disease
  • Obesity
  • Trauma or injury, such as fracture of bone, bone breakage, ligament damage, or joint dislocation
  • Environmental exposures (to substances like asbestos or silica)
  • Cigarette smoking.

Rheumatoid Arthritis can occur at any age, though it commonly starts in middle age. Women are usually at a higher risk of developing the condition as compared to men. Moreover, a person with a family history of Rheumatoid Arthritis is also at an increased risk of this disorder.

SYMPTOMS OF RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

The symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis can have different levels of severity for different patients. In some cases, the symptoms are not persistent; they may come and go. However, over a period of time, Rheumatoid Arthritis can result in the deformation of joints, causing them to shift out of place.

The symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis generally include:

  • Inflammation in the joints
  • Joint pain
  • Tender and warm joints
  • Joint stiffness which is usually worse in the morning and after inactivity
  • Loss of joint function
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Feverish feeling
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss.

10 NATURAL REMEDIES TO FIGHT RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Natural Remedies for Rheumatoid Arthritis are excellent alternative treatment option for managing the disorder in a safe and effective manner. In modern medicine, Rheumatoid Arthritis is typically treated with the help of a class of medications called anti-rheumatic drugs. However, the natural remedies pertain to some time-tested methods, involving diet and lifestyle changes, for managing Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Ten remedies which comprise a beneficial Natural Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis have been listed below.

1. An Anti-inflammatory, Vegan Diet

People suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis should consume an anti-inflammatory, vegan diet to reduce systemic inflammation. Such diet ideally includes fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil, legumes, nuts, seeds, beans, spices, and green tea. In addition, foods with abundance of Omega-3 fatty acids -- including chia seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, and fatty fishes like tuna, salmon, herring, and mackerel -- are also beneficial in managing Rheumatoid Arthritis.

2. Foods Rich In Antioxidants

Another useful natural remedy for managing Rheumatoid Arthritis is foods that contain plenty of antioxidants, like Vitamins A, C, and E, and selenium, because they can reduce inflammation. Antioxidant-rich foods chiefly include spinach, kidney beans, dark chocolate, and berries such as blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, and goji berries.

3. Eating Sufficient Amounts Of Fiber

Rheumatoid Arthritis can be managed naturally by consuming a diet rich in fibres. The intake of fibre-rich foods can be helpful in reducing inflammatory responses that can lead to a drop in C-reactive protein levels. For ensuring an adequate fibre amount in diet, Rheumatoid Arthritis patients should consume whole grain foods, soy products, fresh vegetables, and fruits like strawberries and grapes.

4. Turmeric

The common household spice 'Turmeric' can also provide relief from the painful and inflammatory symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. One of the key active components of turmeric is 'Curcumin' which has proven anti-inflammatory properties.

5. Cinnamon

The use of Cinnamon can also alleviate the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis in a natural manner. The bark of Cinnamon is known for its anti-inflammatory qualities and its ability to manage aches and pains, especially when they deteriorate due to cold weather conditions.

6. Black Pepper

Black pepper has been known since ancient times for its ability to manage pain and swelling. The use of black pepper can be beneficial for Rheumatoid Arthritis patients because the 'Capsaicin' ingredient of black pepper is commonly associated with anti-inflammatory medications -- particularly creams and lotions -- for relieving pain and inflammation.

7. Garlic

Garlic is also one of the effective Natural Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis because it is considered an anti-inflammatory agent. The use of garlic in the daily diet can help in managing inflammation because of its ability to suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and reduce the progression of arthritic joints.

8. Ginger

Ginger can alleviate the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis because it contains certain elements that reduce the action of T cells, which attack the healthy cells of the body. Adding ginger to the diet of Rheumatoid Arthritis patient's can result in decreased systemic inflammation.

9. Rest And Relaxation

Rheumatoid Arthritis patients can also benefit from rest and relaxation, and getting enough sleep at night and even a nap during the afternoon. Sleep, massage, deep breathing exercises, and muscle relaxation exercises can reduce stress and tension, and ease the Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms.

10. Exercise

Exercises like gentle stretching, walking, cycling and swimming can help Rheumatoid Arthritis patients in fighting fatigue, as well as strengthening their muscles and increasing the joint range of motion. Moreover, exercise can also reduce swelling in the joints and pain.

CONCLUSION

Natural Remedies for Rheumatoid Arthritis can be helpful in managing the chronic condition and controlling its symptoms like pain, inflammation, and bone loss. However, it is advisable to use the remedies under the guidance of a doctor because Rheumatoid Arthritis occurs and progresses differently in each patient.

  3. Stage - III or Thawing stage - This stage lasts from 6 months to 2 years. During this stage, the range of motion begins to improve.

DIAGNOSIS

Following diagnostic methods are used to diagnose this condition -

  • Physical examination - Your doctor may ask you to move your shoulder in certain ways to check for pain and will evaluate your range of motion (active range of motion) and to relax your muscles while moving your arm (passive range of motion).
  • By injecting an anesthetic agent - Your doctor might inject your shoulder with an anesthetic agent or a numbing medicine to determine your passive and active range of motion.
  • Imaging tests - Your doctor may advise you to undergo some tests, such as X-rays or an MRI, to rule out other problems.

PREVENTION

It is well known to all of you that "Prevention is always better than cure". Treatment of Inherited Palmoplantar Keratoderma in Ayurveda

The skin on the soles of feet and palms of the hands are referred to as palmoplantar and keratoderma is a term used to describe marked thickening of the skin.

Inherited palmoplanar keratoderma is a skin condition characterized by thickening of the skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. In some of the cases, organs other than the skin are also affected. Most often, the abnormal skin involves only the palms and soles but in some cases, it extends on to the top of hands and feet as well.

It is caused by genetic abnormality and mostly affects palms and soles. The members of the same family may be affected. In some types, it is associated with abnormalities of the internal organs.

Inherited Palmoplantar Keratoderma

Palmoplantar Keratoderma can be acquired or inherited.

  • Acquired palmoplantar keratoderma may occur due to changes in the environment.
  • Inherited palmoplantar keratoderma occurs due to genetic mutations that result in the abnormalities of a skin protein known as keratin.

There are three types of Inherited Palmoplantar Keratoderma which include:

  1. Diffuse PPK - Diffuse PPK affects most of the palms and soles.
  2. Focal PPK - Focal PPK mainly affect the pressure areas.
  3. Punctate PPK - Punctate PPK result in the formation of tiny bumps on the palms as well as soles.

The classification of Inherited Palmoplantar Keratoderma is generally confusing. A simple classification comprises three factors:

  1. It is classified by looking at the specific structure and distribution.
  2. Other tissue such as nails, hair, mucus membranes and associated skin other than palms and soles.
  3. Fragile or blistering skin may be present or absent.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF INHERITED PALMOPLANTAR KERATODERMA?

The cause of PPK is hereditary. It may be autosomal dominant inheritance (inherited from one affected parent) or from both parents who are generally unaffectedly known as autosomal recessive inheritance.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF INHERITED PALMOPLANTAR KERATODERMA?

It may develop in the early childhood having redness of the palms and soles. There is a clear difference between affected and unaffected areas of the skin and usually affects in the children at the age of 3 or 4.

  • Development of red band at the edges.
  • Evenly widespread thickened skin over the palms and soles known as keratosis.
  • Keratotic lesions may appear on the top of hands, knee, feet, and elbows.
  • Nails become thickened
  • Palms and soles gradually become thicker and develop a yellowish and waxy appearance.
  • Increased sweating
  • The tendency of developing fungal and bacterial infections of the feet.

Treatment: According to modern medicine, this condition persists for life and may be passed on to the next generation. Certain treatments such as emollients, topical retinoids, topical Vitamin D ointments, systemic retinoids, keratolytics are prescribed.
