Management of Infertility in Ayurveda

Nowadays, the problem of infertility is becoming common and it is the need of the hour to find a solution. Various factors such as stress, radiation, lack of biological food in the diet, genetic disorders, wrong lifestyle, etc. are the factors responsible for infertility.

Management of Infertility in Ayurveda

Infertility primarily refers to the biological inability of a woman of the reproductive age to conceive.

Allopathic treatment for infertility is financially burdensome for most of the patients whereas the Ayurvedic approach for the treatment is different as it focuses on the psychological aspects as well has a holistic approach.

Causes Of Infertility In Women Include:

  • Ovarian factors such as PCOS
  • Tubal factors
  • Uterine problems such as Endometriosis
  • Menstrual cycle may be affected by factors such as stress, wrong diet and lifestyle.

Male infertility is caused due to the factors which affect their sperm production or transportation such as infections, ejaculation problems, defects in the tubules that transport sperms, etc.

Infertility is known as Vandhyatva in Ayurveda. In Ayurvedic classics, it is mentioned that fertility is dependent on the following factors:

  • Ritu (fertile period i.e. ovulatory cycle)
  • Kshetra (reproductive organs)
  • Ambu (nourishing fluids)
  • Beej (ovum)

Healthy psychological status of the individuals also plays a major role. Factors on which fertility depend are mother, father, atma, satva, satmya and rasa.

In infertility, Vata especially Apana Vata should be taken care of along with other impaired Doshas.

Ayurveda focuses on the treatment of disorders with the use of herbal remedies, modifications in diet, lifestyle etc.
For infertility, there is a wonder herb known as 'Shatavari' which is used to treat all types of gynecological problems. As the name suggests, the word 'Shatavari' means who possesses hundred husbands or acceptable to many, implying its ability to increase the chances of fertility. This herb is considered as a general as well as a female reproductive tonic. This herb is highly effective in the disorders of the female reproductive tract.

infertility treatment in ayurveda

In Ayurvedic practice, the roots of the plant are considered as an effective aphrodisiac, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, galactagogue etc. The roots of this herb are used to produce the most potent healthy sperm and ovum and eventually helps in achieving a healthy pregnancy.

From pharmacognostic point of view, it was previously included in the family Liliaceae, but now has been shifted to a newly created family Asparagaceae.

  • Kingdom: Plantae
  • Family: Asparagaceae
  • Genus: Asparagus
  • Species: A.racemosus

  • Rasa (Taste): Madhura (Sweet), Tikta (Bitter)
  • Guna (Qualities): Snigdha (unctuous, oily) and Guru (heavy to digest)
  • Vipaka: Undergoes sweet taste conversion after digestion.
  • Veerya (Potency): Cold
  • Effect on Tridosha: Balances Vata and Pitta doshas
ancient reference, shatavari

(Reference: Dhanwantari Nighantu, Shloka No. 323, 325)

Meaning: According to this shloka, Shatavari is cold in potency, has a bitter taste, useful in tuberculosis and blood disorders. It balances Vata and Pitta doshas, acts as an aphrodisiac, rejuvenating in nature and increases memory, its taste converts into sweet after digestion, increases intelligence, good for heart, useful in hemorrhoids and diseases related to eyes and colon.

The plant is woody climber which grows up to 1-2 m in height. The leaves are small, uniform and pine-needle in shape, flowers are arranged in the form of small spikes, the roots are tuberous, succulent, finger-shaped clustered.

It is known to possess a wide range of phytochemicals such as steroidal saponins, polycyclic alkaloid, furan compound, carbohydrates, sterols, trace minerals etc.

shatavari capsules

Shatavari is considered as the best herb for female infertility.

  • Shatavari enhances folliculogenesis and ovulation. In this way, it prepares the womb for conception and prevents the chances of miscarriage.
  • It stimulates the hemopoietic function and also improves the functions of accessory sex glands.
  • Oestrogen dependent glycogen is the energy source for the female reproductive system. Estrogen increases the glycogen content in the uterus. In research, it was found that Shatavari causes an increase in uterine glycogen without altering serum estrogen and progesterone.
  • A.racemosus preparations are also recommended in the cases of threatened abortion. The rasayana and anti-oxidant properties of Shatavari help in modulating various immune processes. These properties also prevent the formation of lipid-peroxides at the placental level.
  • Stress also plays a major role in infertility. Being an adaptogen herb, Shatavari improves the body's ability to cope up with stress. It also reduces oxidative stress and free radicals within the system. Its anti-stress properties are due to the presence of flavonoids, saponins and polyphenols. They help in reducing the production of stress hormones. Hence, Shatavari is a very useful herb in the management of stress and mental depression as well.
  • It is also very helpful in menstrual complaints such as irregular bleeding, PCOS, tubal blockages, dysmenorrhea etc.

For the manufacture of Shatavari Capsules, Planet Ayurveda uses the standardized extract of the herb. These capsules contain 500 mg of standardized extract in the vegetarian shell. Capsules manufactured by Planet Ayurveda are free from chemicals, artificial flavors and preservatives. They rejuvenate the whole body and act as a wonderful tonic. How Ayurveda can help in treating Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)?

Our brain and spinal cord are surrounded by a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid accumulates in the cavities of the brain called ventricles. The main function of this fluid is to protect the brain and the spinal cord, supply nutrients and eliminate the waste products.

In Ayurveda, this condition is not properly described but as per its symptoms, it is caused due to the vitiation of vata and Kapha dosha which leads to the impairment in the functioning of brain due to the accumulation of ama in the body channels.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a condition in which there is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid which causes an enlargement in the ventricles of the brain. In most of the cases, the main cause of this blockage is unclear.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)

NPH is mostly seen in older people (between the age group of 60 and 70) and it is estimated that up to 7 lakhs of Americans have this disease but only 20% receive an appropriate diagnosis. Many times this disease has been misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease.

The main cause of primary normal pressure hydrocephalus is idiopathic (unknown cause). Hence it is referred to as primary normal pressure hydrocephalus.

These are considered as the hallmarks of normal pressure hydrocephalus which include:

  • Difficulty in walking and when it is compared to a person’s walk, the body is bent forward, legs held wide apart and feet moving as if these are glued to the deck.
  • Loss of interest and difficulty in completing daily routine work, forgetfulness and short term memory loss.
  • Low concentration power and changes in behavior and personality with declining in thought processes.
  • Sudden fall

Urinary Symptoms

  • Loss of bladder strength to control which also appears later in the disease
  • Unable to hold stools (but it is a less common symptom)
  • Frequent micturition
  • The urgency to pass urine
  • Urinary incontinence

Increase Of Pressure In The Brain

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty in focusing on an object

Other Common Symptoms Are

  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Excessive sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Muscle spasm

  • Generally, the diagnosis is done based on a careful review of symptoms and medical history and through physical examination.
  • Gait analysis: It is a timed walk test in which the patient is watched as if he or she can walk about 10 meters.
  • Imaging tests: MRI or CT scan is done to verify the enlarged ventricles in the brain.
  • Neuropsychological test: It is done to assess if there is a loss of brain function.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid tests: There is a spinal tap and external lumbar drainage.
  • Cisternography is another test which is done to check the CSF absorption.

It Includes:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Dementia
  • Obstructive hydrocephalus
  • Normal aging of the brain

Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a long term condition. The treatment involves the measures that enable the patient to cope with the problems like difficulty in walking, mood and behavior changes, poor concentration, speech problems, etc.

How To Keep Yourself Hydrated This Summer?

Ayurveda has always emphasized to maintain the health and prevent the diseases by following proper diet and lifestyle according to the Ritucharya (seasonal regimen) as mentioned in the classics of Ayurveda as prevention is always better than cure. The adaptation according to the seasonal changes is the key to survival; therefore the knowledge of Ritucharya or seasonal regimens is very important. Ritucharaya is prominently discussed in the first few chapters of most of the Ayurvedic Samhitas (Ayurvedic texts).

According to Ayurveda, there are six seasons and a year is divided into two kaals (time period). Each kaal is composed of three seasons which gives a total of six seasons in a year. Each season lasts for 2 months and these seasons are precisely found in Indian sub-continent.

The period of Grisham Ritu or Summer Season is in between Mid-May to Mid-July. This season is intensely hot and have debilitating effect on environment, by which human beings are also affected.

B-cell Leukemia in Children - Symptoms & Ayurvedic Treatment

Leukemia is a fast-growing blood cancer that usually affects WBCs (White Blood Cells) by attacking blood-forming tissues in the bone marrow and tissues of the lymphatic system. There are numerous types of leukemias. But the Lymphoblastic or lymphocytic leukemia is the most common which affects certain cells of the immune system such as B-cells or T-cells. But B-cell leukemia usually affects children. In this disease, numerous immature white blood cells are found in the bone marrow and blood. It is basically, a "Pitta pradhan tridoshaj vyadhi" which is termed as "Raktapitta" in our Ayurvedic classics.

B cells are a type of white blood cells which are known as B lymphocytes. These cells actively participates in maintaining humoral immunity. B cells bind to the antigens with the help of B cell receptors and develop antibodies against them and save our body from various infections and diseases.

B-cell Leukemia in Children

There are various types of B cells in our and that's why there are varieties of B cell leukemia that depend upon the type of cell involved.

  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • B-cell prolymphocytic leukemia
  • Precursor B lymphoblastic leukemia
  • Hairy cell leukemia

Moreover, leukemia can be acute or chronic.

Still the cause of the disease is not known and researches are going on to evaluate the exact cause. Here, in this disease genetics plays an important role in the causation of leukemia. Certain mutations in the genes give rise to alterations in the chromosomes.

Even hormonal imbalance is also one of the major factors that are responsible for the disease by altering the production of WBCs.

Weak immunity also makes the individual susceptible to B cell blood cancer.

  • Genetic syndromes like Down’s syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, etc. increase the risk of leukemia.
  • History of immune-compromised diseases
  • Exposure to certain chemicals and radiations
  • History of recurrent infections
  • Unwholesome diet and lifestyle
  • History of bone marrow transplantation
  • Some other factors like being overweight, and smoking and drinking at an early age are very common which suppress the immune system.

The signs and symptoms of the leukemia are as follows:

  • Bleeding and bruises are very common in patients.
  • Associated with fatigue, weakness, tiredness and drowsiness.
  • Mostly the children affected due to B cell leukemia are prone to develop various infections.
  • Reduced appetite and impaired digestion.
  • Recurrent fever
  • Swollen and tender lymph nodes.
  • The person often feels nausea and vomiting.
  • Also there is tendency to bleed
  • Reduced immunity.
  • Delayed growth and development.
  • Bone and joint pains
  • Weight loss

As per Ayurveda, this disease is correlated to "Raktapitta" where the vitiation of Rakta along with Pitta dosha takes place. It does not mean that other doshas are not involved in this condition, they are also involved but predominantly vitiated doshas are Pitta and Rakta (as per Sushruta). In turn, they vitiate the rasa (Lymph), rakta (Blood), mamsa (Muscle) and majja (Bone marrow) dhatus. Hence there is an impairment in the production of B-cells in the body and all these conditions produce symptoms like – bruises, fever, recurrent infections, growth of children gets hampered, etc and a disease is developed named as "Raktapitta or B cell Leukemia".

On a clinical basis, it is very difficult to diagnose leukemia. We need to take the help of investigations to rule out the disease along with the cause and extent of its affection.

Here are some diagnostic criteria that help to confirm the diagnosis and evaluate the cause.

  • CBC (Complete blood count)
  • Urine tests
  • Bone marrow aspiration
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Lymph nodes biopsy
  • CT scan (Computed tomography)
  • MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Hormonal assay
  • Chromosome tests

The treatment plan and the prognosis of leukemia vary in adults and children. The measures should be taken to:

  • Correct the immature production of B cells
  • Detoxification of the body in order to eliminate toxins
  • Maintain immunity
  • Bring equilibrium in tridoshas
  • Avoid metastasis
  • Maintain Agni
  • Promote growth and development

Planet Ayurveda offers various herbal formulations to treat various diseases. In the case of B Cell Leukemia, we advise herbo-mineral formulations that directly act on the bone marrow and correct the production of white blood cells.

As they are formed from pure extract of herbs and properly processed minerals they will not develop any side effect on the body.

In the treatment plan mainly the "Tikta rasa" aushadhis are advised which are followed by "Balya" aushadhis.

These granulomas may change the normal structure as well as functions of the affected organs.

sarcoidosis treatment in ayurveda

The exact cause of sarcoidosis is not known but it is believed that due to over-reaction of the immune system, the immune cells begin to collect causing inflammation known as granulomas. As granulomas build up in an organ, the function and structure of that organ can be affected.

According to Ayurveda, it is caused due to the accumulation of endotoxins or Ama within the system. Ama accumulates in the body channels and moves through the lymphatic and circulatory channels. These endo-toxins also interfere with the functioning of the immune system which results in the accumulation of anti-bodies in the form of lumps in different parts of the body.

Yes, there is an effective treatment of Sarcoidosis in Ayurveda through herbs and herbal remedies. Ayurvedic treatment for Sarcoidosis consists of removing the endo-toxins that are accumulated within the system and correcting the immunity.

Toxic Megacolon: A Complication Of IBD

The large intestine is the lowest part of the digestive tract which consists of appendix, colon, and rectum where re-absorption of water occurs from the food and processing of waste products along with its elimination in the form of stool through the anus.

There can be various reasons for the malfunctioning of the large intestine. One of them is toxic dilatation of the colon or toxic mega colon. Abnormal dilatation of the mega colon is the anomaly for which these terms are used. It is a very serious medical condition which needs to be corrected as soon as possible otherwise results in severe signs and symptoms. Although it is a rare condition in which within a small span of time, widening of the large colon or intestines occur and can prove to be fatal. It is usually presented as a complication of the IBD, i.e. Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis.

toxic mega colon, toxic megacolon

Inflammatory bowel disease is the main cause of toxic mega colon. IBD comprises of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. In both of them, there is irritation and swelling of the intestines, both large and small. Both of them are very painful and distressing conditions which may cause severe and permanent damage to the colon. Intestines become dilated, expanded and distended in IBD that results in the inability of those to remove stool and gas present in them. The gradually huge amount of gas and waste products build up in the colon ultimately leading to rupture of the colon. This rupturing of intestines is a life-threatening condition as due to the rupturing of the colon the normal bacteria present in them may spread to the whole body causing infection and death.

In some cases, it can also occur due to infection from Clostridium difficile.

As it can occur within a short span of time, symptoms also appear suddenly, which include:

  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Distention of the abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Fever
  • Tachycardia i.e. increased heart rate
  • Shock
  • Diarrhea which may contain blood
  • Painful bowel movements

It can be diagnosed through physical examination and some lab tests. Patient case history can reveal any of the inflammatory bowel diseases. During the physical examination, abdominal tenderness can be detected. Some of the lab tests can confirm the diagnosis:

  • Abdominal X-ray
  • Abdominal CT scan
  • Blood tests like complete blood count and blood electrolytes

They all get strength from Digestive fire and their strength depend upon it. Hence, food consumption should be according to the nature of this digestive fire. The strong state of digestive fire provides strength, longevity, health, excitement, and intelligence to the body.

Ayurveda has proved to be very effective in treating inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn's disease, and Ulcerative colitis. On the other hand, in modern medicine, these diseases are considered to be non-curable but Ayurveda treats them effectively that too only with herbal medicines. According to Ayurveda, these diseases occur due to increased Pitta dosha in the body and low digestive fire resulting in inflammation and ulceration of the colon. Toxic megacolon occurs when this disease is not treated timely or maltreated. Ayurveda can help in treating this disease as well as its complications.

As it is the complication of the IBD and Ayurveda treats the diseases from its root cause hence, in this case, to treat toxic megacolon IBD, i.e. Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease must be treated so that if root cause will be eradicated, the complications will go on its own. Early intervention and proper herbal treatment is the key to prevent Toxic megacolon, a life-threatening condition.

Essential Oil Blends for Better Overall Health

Essential oil contains volatile chemical compounds which are extracted from the natural herbal plants. The term "Essential" means an "essence" of the plant. Here it is clearly mentioned that the essence, chemical compounds or derivatives of the herbs are extracted and preserved.

essential oils

These oils are prepared by following the distillation process. In Ayurveda, these essential oils or volatile oils are explained under Arka Kalpana and named as "Arka" where the Arka is called as the essence that are obtained by the method of Arka Kalpana (the process of distillation). We can get a lot of references in Sara Sangraha and Ravan Samhita.

But this kalpana is explained beautifully and well elaborated by Ravana in arka praksha where he has mentioned the methods, the dosage, the actions and effects of these essential oils.

  • Even modern science is also using these ways by just modifying the apparatus and given the name “Distillate” to it.
  • In Unani – it is known by the name “Arkquites”
  • In Homeopathy, these essential oils are known as “Tinctures”
  • In Siddha system of medicine, these essential oils are called “Teenir”.

Basically, these Arkas are prepared by extracting the active chemical compounds from the herbs by soaking them in water for a certain period of time and then processed in the "Arka Yantra".

Distillation is the process of separating the active compounds of the plants by vaporizing the liquid where the parts of the plant are boiled on moderate temperature and then the vapors are made to pass through a cold surface (condensation process) and thereby converting them again into the liquid form.

  • Improve digestive fire – The essential oils are used to increase appetite and improve digestion. These oils help to relieve nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, acidity, stomach ache and other gastrointestinal conditions.
  • Enhance complexion – Mostly essential oils are used to tone up the skin. They help to enhance complexion, remove dry flakes from the skin and even delay aging. Better to massage the oil on the body at bedtime to get a fair and flawless skin.
  • Keep the mind calm – You can breathe in or inhale the oil and even can rub the oil on the head to relieve the pressure and tension. It is the effective and quite simple way to relieve stress, headache, insomnia depression, etc. Mostly to relax the body and mind aromatherapy is used and the aromas of the essential oils are utilized to get the desired effects.
  • Oral hygiene – Essential oils are used in the preparation of the mouth washes that are widely used in case of halitosis, bad breath, oral thrush and to maintain oral hygiene.
  • Antitussive – In case of inflammation of bronchioles, person may develop cough and breathing problem. Here, in this case, inhalation is the best way. You can inhale the oil directly or by boiling oils in the water.
  • Carminative – To relieve constipation essential oils are the best option to be adopted. They can be mixed in the water and usually preferred at bed time. They make the stool softer and lubricate the colon hence, ease constipation.
  • Alleviate skin problems – In case of skin problems these oils can be massaged on the body or affected areas. Due to penetrating property they will deeply reach the inner layer of the skin.
  • Relive pains – Mostly muscular pains can be managed by these oils. Essential oils can be massaged on the body parts to relieve pain.
  • Healing wounds – Essential oils can be applied over the wounds as they help to promote wound healing.
  • Boost up energy – Some of the essential oils actually increase the blood circulation which directly increase the oxygen supply to the brain hence replenish the body with the energy and make you active throughout the day. Moreover they help to improve brain functions and enhance cognitive skills.

Moreover, these oils are used to purify the air through the Air purifier that indirectly impacts the health. Most commonly used oils are Tea tree oil, Lavender oil, and Eucalyptus oil.

Nowadays usually the things available in the market are most of the time, impure or adulterated with similar products which are quite cheap. So it's better to test the purity.

  • Completely evaporate – These oils if left uncovered evaporate completely without leaving a residue or strain.
  • Fragrance – The fragrance of the oil is totally as that of the natural plant.
  • Characteristic Color – These oils are generally clear

These oils can be used externally as well as internally.

  • For external use – Apply these oils on the affected area, even you can inhale the fumes by boiling them in water or liquid media.
  • Internally – Even you can drink some of the oils by mixing them in the water.

We may smell the oils, rub the oils or put them in water, inhale them and even can drink them.

The reasons are -

  • Fast absorption
  • Fast action
  • Easily palatable
  • Have high potency
  • Very less dose
  • Cheaper and free from preservatives

Some very common essential oils that have been used since ages are the contribution of the Indian System of Medicine i.e. Ayurveda. They are -Ajmodadi arka, Shatpushpi arka, Karpurady arka, Brahmi arka, etc.

As per Ayurveda the shelf life period of the Arka (Essential oils) is 1 year from the date of manufacturing.

  • Some people are allergic to some things so it is better that before using any essential oil, test them on your skin and see how your skin responds to it and then use them.
  • It is better to dilute the oil before use as it will reduce the chance of a reaction.
  • Avoid if the oil is turbid and has foul odour.
  • Avoid the overuse of these oils.

Herbal Remedies for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

The word 'Benign' means not very serious, 'Paroxysmal' means it occurs suddenly and for a very short period of time and 'Positional' means it triggers with certain postures or movements. This condition is the most common cause of vertigo. It affects both young and old individuals. It is the most common cause of vertigo followed by head injury in young individuals and occurs spontaneously in the age group of 50-70 years. This condition is likely to be the cause of falls and other morbidities in the elderly. It has been established that the symptoms of BPPV are attributable to detached otoconia in any of the semi-circular canals.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

It occurs when the tiny calcium particles known as canaliths clump up in the inner ear canals. It may occur without any reason or may be associated with age. The inner ear sends signals to the brain about head and body movements relative to gravity which helps to keep the balance.

Often, there is no known cause of BPPV, therefore it is known as an idiopathic BPPV. It is often associated with a minor to severe blow to the head.

Ear's Role In Causing BPPV

There is a tiny organ known as vestibular labyrinth inside the ear which includes three loop-shaped structures known as semi-circular canals that contain fluid and fine hair like sensors that monitor the rotation of the head.

Other structures are known as the otolith organs which contain the crystals that make the person sensitive to gravity. They monitor the movements of head- up and down, back and forth, right and left.

These structures can be dislodged due to variety of reasons and can move into one of the semi-circular canals especially during lying down. This condition causes the semi-circular canal to become sensitive by changes in the position of head which makes the person to feel dizzy.

The signs and symptoms of BPPV can come and go, with symptoms commonly lasting less than a minute. The symptoms can disappear for some time and they can recur. Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Loss of balance or unsteadiness
  • A sense that you and your surroundings are moving

In Ayurveda, this condition is referred to as "Bhrama" where vitiated Vata (Prana Vata) combines with vitiated Pitta (particularly Sadhak Pitta) and causes "spinning" like sensation. The imbalanced Sadhak Pitta aggravates Prana Vata which regulates the nervous system, brain and respiration and also decreases tarpak kapha in the brain.

ancient reference, shloka

Natural Ways

  • Increase the consumption of beetroot, carrot and pomegranate

Natural Ayurvedic Remedies for Hernia Treatment

People often ignore hernia because they don't have the exact knowledge about this disease. This disease occurs when fatty tissue or an organ squeezes through a weak spot in connective tissue or surrounding muscle known as "fascia". The different type of hernia as per its place are inner groin (inguinal), resulting from an incision (incisional), outer groin (femoral), upper stomach (hiatal), and belly button (umblical).

Natural, Ayurvedic, Remedies, Hernia, Treatment
  1. Inner groin (Inguinal): In this type of hernia the bladder or intestine protrudes through the inguinal canal in the groin or the abdominal wall. Mostly men are affected with this hernia as groin part is affected most. It defects the musculature of the groin area.
  2. Resulting from an incision (Incisional hernia): In this type of hernia the intestines are pushed through the abdominal wall at the previous abdominal surgery site. It is most common in overweight and elderly people.
  3. Outer groin (Femoral hernia): It is a painful lump in the groin or inner upper part of the thigh.

  1. The displacement of the intestines from its place is known as a hernia. Sometimes it gets displaced in the testicle, groin region or umbilical region. As per the place it is of different types like strangulated, umbilical, etc. When the intestine got displaced from its original place than it develops a very painful condition.
  2. It is also known as a displacement of the small intestines. Especially in men, the intestines get displaced through the inguinal canal in the groin region. In females the hernia in the lower pelvic region causes a swelling. This type of swelling has an importance that it gets disappear when we move it downwards with our hand touch and it gets back when we remove our hand. In this disease, patients should eat in less quantity so that constipation should not occur. You should take special concern that doesn’t stress yourself while passing stools because it can cause displacement of the intestines.

Constipation, a sudden jerk, progressive cough, falling down, getting hurt, pressure, while passing stool applying too much force or due to weak abdominal wall the intestine comes out from different places. All these reasons cause vata (air) to move in the testicles the arteries and veins over there avert that testicles and mass over there increase due to which the size of the testicles increases. Vata, Pitta, Kapha, Rakta, Meda, and Intestine these all are of seven types.

  1. Vataj roga: In this type of disease the testicles are dry like water carrying bags and causes pain.
  2. Pittaj type: The hernia in this type are like Gular flower (Ficus racemose) that are red in color, hot in nature and cause a burning sensation.
  3. Mutraj: In this type the increased testicles contain water that is like water carrying bag creating noise, in touch they are soft, moving here and there that causes pain. In inguinal hernia, the testicles move down from its place after that narrowing of the part made a lump with swelling.

वृद्धी वातसमुत्ये केवलमुत्तपत्तिहेतुरन्यतम। (सु। नि १२ /३ )

This shloka states that Vata, Pitta, Kapha, Rakta, Meda, Mutra, and Antra are the causes of seven types of vridhi roga. The mutrajanya and antrjanya vridhi is due to Vata but mutravridhi is due to increase of mutra (urine) and antravridhi increase in intestine is not the reason. In antravridhi there is displacement of the intestine.

,सशब्दमवपीडितश्चोधर्वमुपैति , विमुक्तकश्च पुनराधमायते , तमंत्रवृद्धि
मसाध्यामित्याचक्षते (सु। नि १२ /९)

How to treat Carcinoid Tumor in Ayurveda?

Carcinoid is a rare tumor that begins in cells in the neuroendocrine system. Usually, they grow slowly and can arise in several places throughout the body. Mostly they begin in the digestive tract and have a potential for metastasis. The primary area of involvement is the gut as primitive stem cells give rise to these carcinoid tumors and produce a large amount of hormones. They can also be seen in other organs like – ovaries, lungs, prostate and kidneys which are most of the time metastatic in nature. And as compared to metastatic tumors the growth rate is very slow. Mostly the appendix and small intestine are the most common organs that are affected by the carcinoid tumors. Carcinoid tumors of the mid gut like jejunum, ileum, duodenum, etc. are often associated with carcinoid syndrome (comprises of signs and symptoms that occur secondary to the carcinoid tumor). The incidence ratio is high in the age group of 40s and 50s, in females and in African American races. The risk of carcinoid tumors is high in person with the history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, pernicious anemia, etc.

Carcinoid Tumor

According to Ayurveda tumors are considered as 'Arbuda' which usually result from improper dietary and lifestyle behaviors, genetic factors, all leading to vitiation of tridoshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha), which get lodged in dhatus and also vitiate them and produce a swelling or growth. These growths or tumors may be malignant or non-malignant in nature and are often metastatic in nature.

Carcinoid tumors are mostly asymptomatic and even they won't create trouble for months or years. Symptoms may vary from patient to patient and depend upon the underlying organs and tissues.
