How to treat Hamstring Cramps at home?

Hamstrings are the big muscles that are located at the back of the thigh. They play a major role in maintaining the posture condition known as flat low back. The hamstring muscles comprise three muscles that are located at the back of the thigh.

THERE ARE THREE HAMSTRING MUSCLES

  1. Semitendinosus
  2. Semimembranosus
  3. Biceps femoris

These muscles start at the bottom of the pelvis at a place called ischial tuberosity. By crossing the knee joint, they end at the lower leg. Hamstring muscle fibers join with the tough and connective tissue of the hamstring tendons and then connected to the bones.

The function of hamstring muscles is that they help in extending the leg straight back and to bend the knee.

The cramp in hamstring muscles is an involuntary contraction of one or more muscles. The cramps are generally harmless, but it is temporarily impossible to use the affected muscle.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF MUSCLE CRAMPS?

Exercise for long periods of time, physical labour or sitting in a constant position for a long period of time can cause overuse of the muscles leading to cramps.

Other Causes Are

  1. Inadequate blood supply: The narrowing of the arteries that deliver blood to the legs can produce cramp-like pain.
  2. Mineral deficiency or depletion: If there is a deficiency of calcium, magnesium or potassium in the diet, it can contribute to muscle cramps.
  3. Nerve Compression: The compression of nerves in the lumbar spine can also produce cramp-like pain. This type of pain worsens while walking.

WHAT ARE THE CLINICAL FEATURES OF HAMSTRING CRAMPS?

  • It may vary from mild twitching to excruciating pain.
  • Fatigue
  • Abrupt onset of pain
  • Inability to do the routine actions or chores

HAMSTRING CRAMPS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

Khalli is called as a muscle cramp in Ayurveda. Here, Vata is an entity that is responsible for this condition. In our body, the function of the muscles is regulated by Vyana Vata. Muscle cramps are caused due to the vitiation of Vata dosha. Vata makes the muscles stiff and due to overuse or pressure on the muscle, it goes into spasm.

In Ayurveda, it is also said that when unwanted or waste materials are not flushed or eliminated from the body which results in Ama formation. Ama formation can also be the cause of pain in the muscles. Kapha kshya is also found so effort should be carried out to give strength to the muscular tissues which are also the site of Kapha dosha.

HOW TO TREAT HAMSTRING CRAMPS AT HOME?

Ayurveda has hope for many ailments which have no answer in the modern medical science.

Hamstring Cramps can be treated at home with simple home remedies. These are:

1. Massage

Massage with an Ayurvedic oil is one of the best ways to cure any type of pain including muscle cramps. For thousands of years, these oils have been used which are prepared by using natural herbs.

  • Oil such as sesame oil can be applied by warming at room temperature and then massage it for 5-10 minutes over the muscles and leg. Massaging will help to relax the muscle and its fibers and for improving blood circulation.
  • Moreover, the regular use of sesame oil is beneficial in strengthening the muscles and bones.
health benefits of massage

Reference: Astanga Hridyam Sutrasthanam, Chapter No. 2, Shloka No. 8

Meaning: According to this shloka, the health benefits of massage are explained. The word Abhyanga means massage. It should be done daily in the morning. It delays ageing, relieves tiredness and excess Vata (aches and pains). It improves vision, nourishes body tissues, prolongs age, induces good sleep and improves skin tone and complexion.

2. Heating Pad

Applying a heating pad to the affected area of the muscle can induce blood flow to that area and can hydrate the tissues resulting in easing the tension of the cramp.

Heating pad should be alternated with ice, in the first few hours following the cramp.

3. Stretching

As a preventive measure and an effective treatment, it helps in increasing blood flow to the site of muscle cramp and relieves tension and pressure of the cramp.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric is analgesic in nature. Add a teaspoon of turmeric in a cup of warm milk and add a teaspoon of cow's ghee (clarified butter) into it. This remedy is very effective in reducing the pain caused due to muscle cramps.

5. Exercise

For hamstring cramps, do the following exercise. Stand facing a wall from the distance of one pace and place your hands flat against it. Keep your legs straight and heels on the floor.

  • Now lean slowly forward until the muscles in the calves feel stretched. Hold the stretch for 10 seconds and then straighten up and relax for 5-10 seconds.
  • Do this procedure three times a day.

6. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile is an herb which acts as a muscle relaxant.

  • Chamomile is a good source of flavonoids which have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Taking a cup of chamomile tea is helpful in the treatment of hamstring cramps.

7. Magnesium-Rich Diet

The role of magnesium is to maintain the normal muscle and nerve function.

  • Take magnesium-rich diet if you frequently suffer from muscle cramps.
  • Foods that are rich in magnesium include bananas, almonds, legumes, etc.

8. Rest

The best and most natural way to relax the muscles is to take a rest because sometimes cramps can be due to over-stimulated muscles and rest can help in healing.

DIET

  • Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Do regular exercise and stretch to improve flexibility.
  • Don’t put pressure on the muscles by sitting in the same position for longer periods of time.
  • Avoid alcoholic drinks, caffeine and do not stay awake till late night.
  • Increase the intake of calcium, minerals and potassium in your diet.
  • Stretching the muscles while working out is also very important.
  • Include grains, nuts and legumes in the diet.

How Ayurveda can help in treating Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)?

Our brain and spinal cord are surrounded by a fluid called cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid accumulates in the cavities of the brain called ventricles. The main function of this fluid is to protect the brain and the spinal cord, supply nutrients and eliminate the waste products.

AS PER AYURVEDA ASPECT

In Ayurveda, this condition is not properly described but as per its symptoms, it is caused due to the vitiation of vata and Kapha dosha which leads to the impairment in the functioning of brain due to the accumulation of ama in the body channels.

AS PER MODERN ASPECT

Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a condition in which there is an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid which causes an enlargement in the ventricles of the brain. In most of the cases, the main cause of this blockage is unclear.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)

Prevalence

NPH is mostly seen in older people (between the age group of 60 and 70) and it is estimated that up to 7 lakhs of Americans have this disease but only 20% receive an appropriate diagnosis. Many times this disease has been misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease.

HOW NORMAL PRESSURE HYDROCEPHALUS CAN BE CAUSED?

The main cause of primary normal pressure hydrocephalus is idiopathic (unknown cause). Hence it is referred to as primary normal pressure hydrocephalus.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF NORMAL PRESSURE HYDROCEPHALUS?

These are considered as the hallmarks of normal pressure hydrocephalus which include:

  • Difficulty in walking and when it is compared to a person’s walk, the body is bent forward, legs held wide apart and feet moving as if these are glued to the deck.
  • Loss of interest and difficulty in completing daily routine work, forgetfulness and short term memory loss.
  • Low concentration power and changes in behavior and personality with declining in thought processes.
  • Sudden fall

Urinary Symptoms

  • Loss of bladder strength to control which also appears later in the disease
  • Unable to hold stools (but it is a less common symptom)
  • Frequent micturition
  • The urgency to pass urine
  • Urinary incontinence

Increase Of Pressure In The Brain

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty in focusing on an object

Other Common Symptoms Are

  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Excessive sleep
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Muscle spasm

HOW NORMAL PRESSURE HYDROCEPHALUS CAN BE DIAGNOSED?

  • Generally, the diagnosis is done based on a careful review of symptoms and medical history and through physical examination.
  • Gait analysis: It is a timed walk test in which the patient is watched as if he or she can walk about 10 meters.
  • Imaging tests: MRI or CT scan is done to verify the enlarged ventricles in the brain.
  • Neuropsychological test: It is done to assess if there is a loss of brain function.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid tests: There is a spinal tap and external lumbar drainage.
  • Cisternography is another test which is done to check the CSF absorption.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF NORMAL PRESSURE HYDROCEPHALUS?

It Includes:

  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Dementia
  • Obstructive hydrocephalus
  • Normal aging of the brain

Ayurveda has always emphasized to maintain the health and prevent the diseases by following proper diet and lifestyle according to the Ritucharya (seasonal regimen) as mentioned in the classics of Ayurveda as prevention is always better than cure. The adaptation according to the seasonal changes is the key to survival; therefore the knowledge of Ritucharya or seasonal regimens is very important. Ritucharaya is prominently discussed in the first few chapters of most of the Ayurvedic Samhitas (Ayurvedic texts).

According to Ayurveda, there are six seasons and a year is divided into two kaals (time period). Each kaal is composed of three seasons which gives a total of six seasons in a year. Each season lasts for 2 months and these seasons are precisely found in Indian sub-continent.

B-cell Leukemia in Children - Symptoms & Ayurvedic Treatment

Leukemia is a fast-growing blood cancer that usually affects WBCs (White Blood Cells) by attacking blood-forming tissues in the bone marrow and tissues of the lymphatic system. There are numerous types of leukemias. But the Lymphoblastic or lymphocytic leukemia is the most common which affects certain cells of the immune system such as B-cells or T-cells. But B-cell leukemia usually affects children. In this disease, numerous immature white blood cells are found in the bone marrow and blood. It is basically, a "Pitta pradhan tridoshaj vyadhi" which is termed as "Raktapitta" in our Ayurvedic classics.

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF B CELLS IN OUR BODY?

B cells are a type of white blood cells which are known as B lymphocytes. These cells actively participates in maintaining humoral immunity. B cells bind to the antigens with the help of B cell receptors and develop antibodies against them and save our body from various infections and diseases.

B-cell Leukemia in Children

TYPES OF B CELL LEUKEMIA

There are various types of B cells in our and that's why there are varieties of B cell leukemia that depend upon the type of cell involved.

  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • B-cell prolymphocytic leukemia
  • Precursor B lymphoblastic leukemia
  • Hairy cell leukemia

Moreover, leukemia can be acute or chronic.

WHAT CAUSES B CELL LEUKEMIA?

Still the cause of the disease is not known and researches are going on to evaluate the exact cause. Here, in this disease genetics plays an important role in the causation of leukemia. Certain mutations in the genes give rise to alterations in the chromosomes.

Even hormonal imbalance is also one of the major factors that are responsible for the disease by altering the production of WBCs.

Weak immunity also makes the individual susceptible to B cell blood cancer.

RISK FACTORS

  • Genetic syndromes like Down’s syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, etc. increase the risk of leukemia.
  • History of immune-compromised diseases
  • Exposure to certain chemicals and radiations
  • History of recurrent infections
  • Unwholesome diet and lifestyle
  • History of bone marrow transplantation
  • Some other factors like being overweight, and smoking and drinking at an early age are very common which suppress the immune system.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF B CELL LEUKEMIA?

The signs and symptoms of the leukemia are as follows:

  • Bleeding and bruises are very common in patients.
  • Associated with fatigue, weakness, tiredness and drowsiness.
  • Mostly the children affected due to B cell leukemia are prone to develop various infections.
  • Reduced appetite and impaired digestion.
  • Recurrent fever
  • Swollen and tender lymph nodes.
  • The person often feels nausea and vomiting.
  • Also there is tendency to bleed
  • Reduced immunity.
  • Delayed growth and development.
  • Bone and joint pains
  • Weight loss

PATHOGENESIS

As per Ayurveda, this disease is correlated to "Raktapitta" where the vitiation of Rakta along with Pitta dosha takes place. It does not mean that other doshas are not involved in this condition, they are also involved but predominantly vitiated doshas are Pitta and Rakta (as per Sushruta). In turn, they vitiate the rasa (Lymph), rakta (Blood), mamsa (Muscle) and majja (Bone marrow) dhatus. Hence there is an impairment in the production of B-cells in the body and all these conditions produce symptoms like – bruises, fever, recurrent infections, growth of children gets hampered, etc and a disease is developed named as "Raktapitta or B cell Leukemia".

DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA

On a clinical basis, it is very difficult to diagnose leukemia. We need to take the help of investigations to rule out the disease along with the cause and extent of its affection.

Here are some diagnostic criteria that help to confirm the diagnosis and evaluate the cause.

  • CBC (Complete blood count)
  • Urine tests
  • Bone marrow aspiration
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Lymph nodes biopsy
  • CT scan (Computed tomography)
  • MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Hormonal assay
  • Chromosome tests

TREATMENT STRATEGY

Is Sarcoidosis treatment available in Ayurveda?

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that most commonly affects the lungs and lymph glands but can affect other organs as well. Due to inflammation, there is a formation of abnormal lumps or nodules in one or more organs of the body. These abnormal lumps are known as granulomas. These granulomas may change the normal structure as well as functions of the affected organs.

sarcoidosis treatment in ayurveda

The exact cause of sarcoidosis is not known but it is believed that due to over-reaction of the immune system, the immune cells begin to collect causing inflammation known as granulomas. As granulomas build up in an organ, the function and structure of that organ can be affected.

According to Ayurveda, it is caused due to the accumulation of endotoxins or Ama within the system. Ama accumulates in the body channels and moves through the lymphatic and circulatory channels. These endo-toxins also interfere with the functioning of the immune system which results in the accumulation of anti-bodies in the form of lumps in different parts of the body.

Yes, there is an effective treatment of Sarcoidosis in Ayurveda through herbs and herbal remedies. Ayurvedic treatment for Sarcoidosis consists of removing the endo-toxins that are accumulated within the system and correcting the immunity.

Toxic Megacolon: A Complication Of IBD

The large intestine is the lowest part of the digestive tract which consists of appendix, colon, and rectum where re-absorption of water occurs from the food and processing of waste products along with its elimination in the form of stool through the anus.

There can be various reasons for the malfunctioning of the large intestine. One of them is toxic dilatation of the colon or toxic mega colon. Abnormal dilatation of the mega colon is the anomaly for which these terms are used. It is a very serious medical condition which needs to be corrected as soon as possible otherwise results in severe signs and symptoms. Although it is a rare condition in which within a small span of time, widening of the large colon or intestines occur and can prove to be fatal. It is usually presented as a complication of the IBD, i.e. Crohn's disease or Ulcerative colitis.

toxic mega colon, toxic megacolon

WHAT CAN BE THE CAUSES OF TOXIC MEGACOLON?

Inflammatory bowel disease is the main cause of toxic mega colon. IBD comprises of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. In both of them, there is irritation and swelling of the intestines, both large and small. Both of them are very painful and distressing conditions which may cause severe and permanent damage to the colon. Intestines become dilated, expanded and distended in IBD that results in the inability of those to remove stool and gas present in them. The gradually huge amount of gas and waste products build up in the colon ultimately leading to rupture of the colon. This rupturing of intestines is a life-threatening condition as due to the rupturing of the colon the normal bacteria present in them may spread to the whole body causing infection and death.

In some cases, it can also occur due to infection from Clostridium difficile.

WHAT CAN BE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF TOXIC MEGACOLON?

As it can occur within a short span of time, symptoms also appear suddenly, which include:

  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Distention of the abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Fever
  • Tachycardia i.e. increased heart rate
  • Shock
  • Diarrhea which may contain blood
  • Painful bowel movements

HOW CAN TOXIC MEGACOLON BE DIAGNOSED?

It can be diagnosed through physical examination and some lab tests. Patient case history can reveal any of the inflammatory bowel diseases. During the physical examination, abdominal tenderness can be detected. Some of the lab tests can confirm the diagnosis:

  • Abdominal X-ray
  • Abdominal CT scan
  • Blood tests like complete blood count and blood electrolytes

ancient reference, shloka, digestive fire

Meaning- Digestive fire is the main of all the fires in the body. All other fires or Agni depend upon the Jatharagni as it illuminates all others. They all get strength from Digestive fire and their strength depend upon it. Hence, food consumption should be according to the nature of this digestive fire. The strong state of digestive fire provides strength, longevity, health, excitement, and intelligence to the body.

Reference- Charak Samhita, Part 2, Chikitsa sthanam, chapter no. 15, Shloka no. 39 and 40

Ayurveda has proved to be very effective in treating inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn's disease, and Ulcerative colitis. On the other hand, in modern medicine, these diseases are considered to be non-curable but Ayurveda treats them effectively that too only with herbal medicines. According to Ayurveda, these diseases occur due to increased Pitta dosha in the body and low digestive fire resulting in inflammation and ulceration of the colon. Toxic megacolon occurs when this disease is not treated timely or maltreated. Ayurveda can help in treating this disease as well as its complications.
Dr.Vikram Chauhan (MD-Ayurveda) from Planet Ayurveda has expertise in treating Ulcerative colitis and patients from worldwide consult him for their treatments. No artificial preservatives, chemicals, dye, additive or fillers are added in these medicines. These remedies are purely vegetarian and not tested on animals.

As it is the complication of the IBD and Ayurveda treats the diseases from its root cause hence, in this case, to treat toxic megacolon IBD, i.e. Ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease must be treated so that if root cause will be eradicated, the complications will go on its own. Early intervention and proper herbal treatment is the key to prevent Toxic megacolon, a life-threatening condition.

Essential Oil Blends for Better Overall Health

Essential oil contains volatile chemical compounds which are extracted from the natural herbal plants. The term "Essential" means an "essence" of the plant. Here it is clearly mentioned that the essence, chemical compounds or derivatives of the herbs are extracted and preserved.

essential oils

HOW THESE ESSENTIAL OILS ARE PREPARED?

These oils are prepared by following the distillation process. In Ayurveda, these essential oils or volatile oils are explained under Arka Kalpana and named as "Arka" where the Arka is called as the essence that are obtained by the method of Arka Kalpana (the process of distillation). We can get a lot of references in Sara Sangraha and Ravan Samhita.

But this kalpana is explained beautifully and well elaborated by Ravana in arka praksha where he has mentioned the methods, the dosage, the actions and effects of these essential oils.

  • Even modern science is also using these ways by just modifying the apparatus and given the name “Distillate” to it.
  • In Unani – it is known by the name “Arkquites”
  • In Homeopathy, these essential oils are known as “Tinctures”
  • In Siddha system of medicine, these essential oils are called “Teenir”.

Basically, these Arkas are prepared by extracting the active chemical compounds from the herbs by soaking them in water for a certain period of time and then processed in the "Arka Yantra".

Distillation is the process of separating the active compounds of the plants by vaporizing the liquid where the parts of the plant are boiled on moderate temperature and then the vapors are made to pass through a cold surface (condensation process) and thereby converting them again into the liquid form.

THERAPEUTIC USES OF ESSENTIAL OILS

  • Improve digestive fire – The essential oils are used to increase appetite and improve digestion. These oils help to relieve nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, acidity, stomach ache and other gastrointestinal conditions.
  • Enhance complexion – Mostly essential oils are used to tone up the skin. They help to enhance complexion, remove dry flakes from the skin and even delay aging. Better to massage the oil on the body at bedtime to get a fair and flawless skin.
  • Keep the mind calm – You can breathe in or inhale the oil and even can rub the oil on the head to relieve the pressure and tension. It is the effective and quite simple way to relieve stress, headache, insomnia depression, etc. Mostly to relax the body and mind aromatherapy is used and the aromas of the essential oils are utilized to get the desired effects.
  • Oral hygiene – Essential oils are used in the preparation of the mouth washes that are widely used in case of halitosis, bad breath, oral thrush and to maintain oral hygiene.
  • Antitussive – In case of inflammation of bronchioles, person may develop cough and breathing problem. Here, in this case, inhalation is the best way. You can inhale the oil directly or by boiling oils in the water.
  • Carminative – To relieve constipation essential oils are the best option to be adopted. They can be mixed in the water and usually preferred at bed time. They make the stool softer and lubricate the colon hence, ease constipation.
  • Alleviate skin problems – In case of skin problems these oils can be massaged on the body or affected areas. Due to penetrating property they will deeply reach the inner layer of the skin.
  • Relive pains – Mostly muscular pains can be managed by these oils. Essential oils can be massaged on the body parts to relieve pain.
  • Healing wounds – Essential oils can be applied over the wounds as they help to promote wound healing.
  • Boost up energy – Some of the essential oils actually increase the blood circulation which directly increase the oxygen supply to the brain hence replenish the body with the energy and make you active throughout the day. Moreover they help to improve brain functions and enhance cognitive skills.

Moreover, these oils are used to purify the air through the Air purifier that indirectly impacts the health. Most commonly used oils are Tea tree oil, Lavender oil, and Eucalyptus oil.

"SPECIAL MEASURES TO TEST THE QUALITY AND PURITY OF THE ESSENTIAL OILS"

Nowadays usually the things available in the market are most of the time, impure or adulterated with similar products which are quite cheap. So it's better to test the purity.

  • Completely evaporate – These oils if left uncovered evaporate completely without leaving a residue or strain.
  • Fragrance – The fragrance of the oil is totally as that of the natural plant.
  • Characteristic Color – These oils are generally clear

MODE OF USE

These oils can be used externally as well as internally.

  • For external use – Apply these oils on the affected area, even you can inhale the fumes by boiling them in water or liquid media.
  • Internally – Even you can drink some of the oils by mixing them in the water.

We may smell the oils, rub the oils or put them in water, inhale them and even can drink them.

WHY TO PREFER ESSENTIAL OILS

The reasons are -

  • Fast absorption
  • Fast action
  • Easily palatable
  • Have high potency
  • Very less dose
  • Cheaper and free from preservatives

Some very common essential oils that have been used since ages are the contribution of the Indian System of Medicine i.e. Ayurveda. They are -Ajmodadi arka, Shatpushpi arka, Karpurady arka, Brahmi arka, etc.

SHELF LIFE OF ESSENTIAL OILS

As per Ayurveda the shelf life period of the Arka (Essential oils) is 1 year from the date of manufacturing.

PRECAUTIONS

  • Some people are allergic to some things so it is better that before using any essential oil, test them on your skin and see how your skin responds to it and then use them.
  • It is better to dilute the oil before use as it will reduce the chance of a reaction.
  • Avoid if the oil is turbid and has foul odour.
  • Avoid the overuse of these oils.

Herbal Remedies for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

The word 'Benign' means not very serious, 'Paroxysmal' means it occurs suddenly and for a very short period of time and 'Positional' means it triggers with certain postures or movements. This condition is the most common cause of vertigo. It affects both young and old individuals. It is the most common cause of vertigo followed by head injury in young individuals and occurs spontaneously in the age group of 50-70 years. This condition is likely to be the cause of falls and other morbidities in the elderly. It has been established that the symptoms of BPPV are attributable to detached otoconia in any of the semi-circular canals.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

It occurs when the tiny calcium particles known as canaliths clump up in the inner ear canals. It may occur without any reason or may be associated with age. The inner ear sends signals to the brain about head and body movements relative to gravity which helps to keep the balance.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO (BPPV)?

Often, there is no known cause of BPPV, therefore it is known as an idiopathic BPPV. It is often associated with a minor to severe blow to the head.

Ear's Role In Causing BPPV

There is a tiny organ known as vestibular labyrinth inside the ear which includes three loop-shaped structures known as semi-circular canals that contain fluid and fine hair like sensors that monitor the rotation of the head.

Other structures are known as the otolith organs which contain the crystals that make the person sensitive to gravity. They monitor the movements of head- up and down, back and forth, right and left.

These structures can be dislodged due to variety of reasons and can move into one of the semi-circular canals especially during lying down. This condition causes the semi-circular canal to become sensitive by changes in the position of head which makes the person to feel dizzy.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO (BPPV)?

The signs and symptoms of BPPV can come and go, with symptoms commonly lasting less than a minute. The symptoms can disappear for some time and they can recur. Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Loss of balance or unsteadiness
  • A sense that you and your surroundings are moving

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO (BPPV) ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA?

In Ayurveda, this condition is referred to as "Bhrama" where vitiated Vata (Prana Vata) combines with vitiated Pitta (particularly Sadhak Pitta) and causes "spinning" like sensation. The imbalanced Sadhak Pitta aggravates Prana Vata which regulates the nervous system, brain and respiration and also decreases tarpak kapha in the brain.

ancient reference, shloka

Reference: Astang Hridyam Sutrasthanam, Chapter No. 11, Shloka No. 5 & 6

Meaning: In this shloka, symptoms of increase in Vata dosha are explained. Vata when increases produce emaciation or weakness, black discoloration in the skin, person will desire for hot things (like hot beverages and hot weather). and experiences tremors, bloating, fullness, distention of the abdomen, constipation, loss of strength, insomnia, loss of sensory functions, irregular sleep, delusion, dizziness, giddiness, vertigo and timidity.
