Ayurvedic Treatment for Spinal AVM (Spinal Arteriovenous Malformations)

An impaired spinal cord means interrupted neural responses and disabled sensations in the parts of your body. Brave are those who are fighting with spinal cord disorders. Your body and brain can't communicate without spinal cord. Bottom line of this article is Spinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Here we will discuss all the aspects of this disease in detail along with treatment part. Ayurvedic treatment for Spinal AVM is an eminent approach by many people these days because Ayurveda is safest approach to overcome the sickness.

According to Ayurveda, cause of Spinal AVM is mainly due to imbalance of vata doshas with the involvement of pitta and kapha doshas. Hence Ayurvedic treatment is based on to clear the blockage in the blood channels and improve the blood supply to affected area.

SPINAL AVM (Spinal Arteriovenous Malformations)

Spinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an abnormal knot of blood vessels in spinal cord that have a direct connection between the arterial system and the venous system without intervening capillaries. If it is left untreated, spinal AVM may lead to the permanent damage to spinal cord.

Normally oxygen-rich blood enters into spinal cord through arteries, which branch into smaller blood vessels (capillaries). Spinal cord utilizes the oxygen from the blood in capillaries and this oxygen-depleted blood then passes into veins that carry the blood from spinal cord to heart and lungs. Where as in a spinal AVM, blood passes directly from your arteries to your veins, bypassing capillaries.

This interruption in blood flow results in the deterioration or death of the cells in spinal tissues. In Spinal AVM, arteries and veins can rupture which results in bleeding in the spinal cord (hemorrhage). At times, AVM enlarges and compresses the spinal cord. Specific cause of this disease is still unknown.

Symptoms of AVM may vary according to severity and location of AVM. Symptoms usually appear at the age of 20 and approximately almost 20 % of people diagnosed with spinal AVM are under the age of 16.

The beginning of symptoms may be sudden or gradual. Symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty with walking or climbing stairs
  • Weakness on one or both sides of your body
  • Numbness, tingling or sudden pain in your legs

With the progression of disease, additional symptoms are:

  • Lower back pain
  • Stiff neck
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Headache

  • Pain, tingling and numbness
  • Bulging blood vessel (aneurysm)
  • Problems with moving (motor deficits)

Acute Tubular Necrosis Treatment in Ayurveda

acute tubular necrosis, ayurvedic treatment

Acute tubular necrosis is disorder of kidney, characterized by impairment in the tubule cells of the kidneys, which ultimately leads to acute kidney failure. It is a common diagnosis in acute renal failure. ATN is one of the most common reasons of kidney failure in hospitalized patients.

It may affect person of any age, but it more commonly develops in older individuals due to an augmented prevalence of associated medical conditions.

Both males and females are affected.

As per Ayurveda explanation this disease happens as a result of obstruction in tiny body channels named as srotas. The body channels are involved in this case, known as mutravaha srotas, carrying urine and are responsible for flow of liquid in and out of the kidneys. In case there is obstructions in the incoming srotas, the kidneys are deprived of fluids and shrinkage happens and on other way, if outgoing channels are jammed, swelling occurs.

Acute tubular necrosis (ATN) usually happens due to lack of blood supply and oxygen to the kidney tissues (ischemia of the kidneys) or it could be result of damage to kidney cells caused due to poison or harmful substance.

A heart attack, stroke, and diabetes from long time could be the reason of reduction in blood flow to the kidneys bringing about cell death and ATN.

Some chemicals or medications like antibiotics or anesthetics, and radiology dyes may lead to ATN if your body reacts negatively to them.

The internal structures of the kidney, specifically the tissues of the kidney tubule, get injured or destroyed. ATN is one of the utmost common structural changes that lead to acute renal failure.

Real Story of a Breast Cancer Survivor

I began my long journey of educating myself about Ayurveda, the philosophy behind it, the herbs, the natural remedies, the doshas.

My name is Divna. Breast cancer survivor. Ayurveda believer and enthusiast. Starting a new life. Here is my story: why I decided to redefine and change my life.

30 years of my professional life I passionately devoted to education. I walked my professional path enthusiastically from the classroom, through ministerial offices, to fieldwork, implementing reforms in the education system. I considered myself privileged for getting a chance to make a significant impact and personal contribution to education.

And then a sudden personal blow. I was diagnosed with breast cancer. A big tumor with a few metastases. I was devastated. Mastectomy and lymph nodes removed. And that was the easy part. Chemotherapy was the real challenge. Couldn't eat, was sick all the time, felt dizzy and very weak, lost hair, and abrupt physical changes of the skin and nails. I felt miserable.

From a fellow patient I heard of Ayurveda for the first time in my life. I thought it was just another unrealistic miracle story. After my fourth chemo I felt so bad that I decided to do something. I went to see an ayurvedic doctor for consultations. He advised me about diet. Gave me a list of foods I should avoid. Prescribed me several ayurvedic herbal supplements. It seemed too easy to be true. I asked about the treatment I was already going through. He told me that I should continue with it, and add the ayurvedic therapy to it. That seemed reasonable. I thought, "I can do these changes to my diet. Herbs cannot harm me, and maybe they can help me heal sooner." So, I decided to give it a try.

Went for another consultation to my ayurvedic doctor. This time I had some questions about the herbs, the composition of the ayurvedic products that he prescribed, about Ayurveda and how to change my lifestyle. I left happy with the answers and advice he gave me.

I continued with prescribed ayurvedic remedies and got much, much better. My oncologist was surprised by the speed of my recovery and with my check up results that all came out normal. I knew that I had made the right choice for my health.

My third visit to my ayurvedic doctor was to discuss the diet and the changes in the lifestyle in more detail. I had questions about the company producing these products and the man behind the company.

I began my long journey of educating myself about Ayurveda, the philosophy behind it, the herbs, the natural remedies, the doshas. I was eagerly reading everything available. I met in person the man behind Planet Ayurveda, Dr Vikram Chauhan. Spoke with many patients using ayurvedic remedies. Spoke with ayurvedic practitioners about their experience with herbal remedies.

A few years after I heard of Ayurveda for the first time in my life, I joined the Planet Ayurveda team in its holistic approach to curing and healing people. I share the information about ayurvedic products and their benefits for people suffering from different health concerns.

I am very enthusiastic as I know first hand how effective the Ayurvedic holistic approach to health and wellbeing is.

This story is also published in many magazines like; Spirit of Change, Heartfulness and other.

What is the meaning of Half Moon, Ridges and White Marks on the Nails?

Your nails are like Jewels- Don't use them like tools. Nails are very helpful describing the health of a person. Diet of a person plays an important part in the process of nail formation. Consumption of fruits, vegetables to fulfil the basic requirement of vitamins, minerals and enzymes will keep you healthy and your nails will look even, glossy and lustrous.

Half Moon on Nails

The half-moon formed on the nails is known as the lunula or lunulae is the highly sensitive area of the nail which shouldn't be damaged. It is an extremely important part of the structure of the nail. It looks white because it's the fifth basal layer of the epidermis and it hides the blood vessels beneath it. Lunula is most visible on the thumb but in some people it is not visible at all. A lunula can help in revealing some very important information about a person's health.

  • Lack of lunula – Anemia, Malnutrition
  • Paler bluish – Diabetes
  • Reddish smudges – Cardiovascular disorders
  • Small Lunula- Indigestion due to slow metabolism or excessive toxins
  • There should be a total of 8 to 10 lunulas on both hands as that indicates good health.
  • It should cover 1/5th of the area of the fingernail.
  • It should be ivory in color, the whiter the better. The color of the lunula indicates the strength of the person.
  • The normal fingernail should be reddish, soft, tough, even and lustrous.
  • Lunula or half-moon tells the disease of a person by either changing color or disappearing crescent. Once the person regains his health, lunula will slowly reappear.
  • The lesser the lunulas, the lower energy and immunity you’ll have.
  • If the lunulas are present just on the thumbs then that indicates insufficient energy and the ailment is about to occur.

Ridges on Nails

Ridges are of various types :-

  • Vertical ridges
  • Marks
  • Discoloration
  • Pits and grooves which run from side to side known as beau’s lines. Vertical ridges are harmless.
  • They can be an indication of a nail injury or a health issue.
  • These ridges feel and look like raised lines and run from the cuticle at the base of the nail to the tip. Ridges are not a sign of any disorder or injury and are usually signs of aging.
  • If ridges are accompanied by brittle nails, jagged edges or chipping, you might be suffering from a condition known as Onyhorrhexis which is basically brittle nails. This may be linked to a skin disorder, Lichen planus which is a non-infectious skin rash. Apart from that, there are other disorders which might cause ridges like; Anemia or an underactive thyroid gland.
  • Horizontal ridges are signs of health issues.

White spots on nails
  • The white spots on the nails are not caused only by Calcium deficiency.
  • These white marks on the nails are known as leukonychia and is a very common condition.
  • These white marks also occur when you hit the base or matrix of your nails. It takes around 8 months for a nail to completely grow. When you see these spots on the tip of your nail(s), that means that the injury had occurred on your nails about 4 – 5 months ago.
  • These marks can be a sign of allergic reaction to nail products.
  • These spots are temporary and grow out gradually.
  • But, at times the change in the appearance of your nails might indicate an underlying disease. Nails that turn totally white, for example, can indicate liver disease, but by the time this happens, you probably would have other symptoms.

Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy Treatment in Ayurveda

Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy, Ayurvedic treatment

When the normal activities of a person are restricted then it causes hindrances in leading a normal life. This restriction is caused when there is occurrence of nervous disorder. Movements are a way of expressing our feelings, work etc. and they're monitored by the brain and nerves.

The nervous system is further categorized under two types

  1. Central Nervous System
  2. Peripheral Nervous System

The Peripheral Nervous System consists of the nerves which form a network with the entire body excluding brain. It has further 2 sub divisions, sensory division that collects the impulses from body and send to brain and motor division who does the opposite from the sensory division.

Neuropathy is a term which is used to classify nerve ailments. It can either be sensory or motor. If neuropathy hits both systems then it is known as Sensory Motor neuropathy.

Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy or HMSN or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease

It is a cluster of inherited conditions that cause damage to the peripheral nerves. HMSN was of two types earlier but It was again classified into 7 types:

  • TYPE ONE: It is distinguished by slow nerve conduction velocities and demyelinating neuropathy.
  • TYPE TWO: It is distinguished by normal nerve conduction velocities and degeneration of axons.
  • TYPE THREE: It begins in infancy and causes detained motor skills. This type is quite severe than the former two.
  • TYPE FOUR: This causes muscle weakness and atrophy like other types but it is differentiated for being of autosomal recessive inheritance.
  • TYPE FIVE: It begins between 5 to 12 years. Apart from muscle weakness and muscle atrophy, visual and hearing impairment is also associated.
  • TYPE SIX: It begins early with the same symptoms followed by optic atrophy which results in complete or partial loss of vision.
  • TYPE SEVEN: It starts late with muscular weakness and atrophy commonly in the lower extremities.

  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of balance
  • Absence of reflexes
  • Loss of vision and hearing
  • Lack of feelings
  • Foot deformities
  • Scoliosis

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies are diagnosed through a physical evaluation that focuses on muscle atrophy, weakness, and sensory responses. Apart from this, EMG (electromyography) and motor nerve conduction tests can help in figuring out the type of motor and sensory neuropathy along with the severity of the disease. The disease is finally confirmed through genetic testing.

A proper treatment for hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies is not yet found. Walking, physiotherapies, stretching exercises can be helpful.

Ayurveda is the oldest and safest holistic healing system. It aids in getting rid of the disease from its origin and it has no side effects. Ayurveda theory explains that everything in the universe -living or not is connected. Good health is attained when your mind, body, and spirit are in harmony with the universe. Everyone is made of a combination of five basic elements found in the universe: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth.

Ayurveda is based on three doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha which if vitiated give rise to numerous diseases. Ayurvedic cure for hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies is very effective as the herbs are focused to heal the nervous system which as a result ameliorates the neuromuscular coordination. The herbs heal inflammation and degeneration of peripheral nerves, primarily of the lower limbs. Herbs that work on the central nervous system as well as the individual nerve cells form the chief support of treatment.

Miscarriage Treatment in Ayurveda - Causes, Symptoms, Types & Herbal Remedies

Miscarriage is basically an interrupted journey of embryo or the foetus in the mother's womb. It is the most natural process of pregnancy loss. It is also termed as Spontaneous Abortion. The foetus dies even before it gets the opportunity to survive on its own independently. This is an unfortunate situation for any pregnant woman. According to research studies, approximately 10 to 25 percent of pregnancies often lead to miscarriage.

It occurs generally during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy

Well, the causes for miscarriage are many. But, during the initial stages of pregnancy, the major cause of miscarriage is the abnormality of the chromosomes of foetus. This occurs due to the damaged sperm or egg. Apart from this cause, there are certain other causes for miscarriage. The major one being the improper lifestyle. This includes excessive smoking, drinking, drug addiction, malnutrition, exposure to harmful radiation and consumption of excessive amount of caffeine. Maternal trauma, maternal age, infections, hormonal complications are some of the other causes. And, if a situation occurs when the implantation of the egg fails to occur in the internal lining of the uterus, miscarriage often occurs. Age is yet another cause for miscarriage. If a woman has already experienced miscarriage previously, she may experience it once again. Obesity and diabetes are some of the other common causes for miscarriage.

In Charak samhita Shaarir sthan chapter 8 jatisootriya adhyaya; Miscarriage has been mentioned as garbha sraav or garbha paat.

Dysfunction of Apaan vayu can lead to miscarriage. Ayurveda also relates negative emotions of pregnant mother like anger, jealousy, talking ill of others, sorrow, grief responsible for miscarriage. Malnutrition, consumption of junk food in early months of pregnancy, pitta aggravating foods, vata aggravating lifestyle , excess of spicy, stale foods, mental stress, hectic travelling and improper physical activities lead to miscarriage

According to Ayurveda, miscarriage may occur if the sperm and ovum were deficient in nutrients at the time of conception.

  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Vaginal bleeding that is generally heavy
  • Abdominal pains with cramps
  • Weakness

The major signs are listed below:

  • Weight loss
  • Back pain
  • painful contractions in every 5 to 20 minutes

This is a type of miscarriage, which occurs during the initial phase of pregnancy. It results in uterine bleeding, cramps and pain in the lower region. The cervical os remains closed during this type of miscarriage. This abortion can be prevented by proper medication.

Missed Miscarriage

A miscarriage may occur unknowingly. The embryo dies and there is no embryonic expulsion. It can be diagnosed by the absence of the heartbeat of the foetus in an ultrasound.

Incomplete Miscarriage

When there exists a dilation of the cervix or the rupture of membranes, miscarriage is inevitable. It leads to cramps and bleeding. Medical intervention is sought to clear uterine cavity.

Complete Miscarriage

When the conceived embryo completely leaves the uterus, it is complete miscarriage. Pain, cramps and bleeding will stop completely. It can be confirmed by ultrasound.
