Herbal Remedies for POEMS Syndrome - Symptoms & Ayurvedic Treatment

POEMS is an acronym used for describing an extremely rare blood disorder which damages the nerves and affects multiple systems of the body. This disorder can progress at an alarmingly rapid rate, and can potentially be a life-threatening condition. Hence, an early diagnosis of the disorder and its timely treatment are very important.

The 'POEMS' acronym - underlining the rare multisystem disorder - stands for:

  • Polyneuropathy - disease which affects several nerves
  • Organomegaly - abnormal enlargement of the spleen, liver or lymph nodes
  • Endocrinopathy - disease affecting certain hormone-producing glands which are responsible for regulating sexual function and metabolism
  • Monoclonal Plasmaproliferative Disorder - Abnormal bone marrow cells (plasma cells) which produce monoclonal protein found in bloodstream
  • Skin Abnormalities - abnormal darkening of the skin (hyperpigmentation), thickening of the skin, and excessive facial hair.

POEMS syndrome is also known by some other names, including Osteosclerotic myeloma, Takatsuki disease, Crow-Fukase syndrome, or PEP (Polyneuropathy, Endocrinopathy, Plasma cell dyscrasia) syndrome.

POEMS syndrome characteristically affects people in their middle age; with the average age at onset of the disorder being 50 years. The risk of this disorder is comparatively higher in men as compared to women. The exact cause of the disorder is not known.

POEMS Syndrome: Symptoms

Since POEMS syndrome is a multisystem disorder, its signs and symptoms can be highly variable, and can be similar to those of some other disorders. Generally speaking, some of the common symptoms of POEMS are:

  • Numbness, tingling, pain or weakness in the legs
  • Enlarged spleen, liver or lymph nodes
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Diabetes
  • Fatigue
  • Swelling in the limbs
  • Sexual problems
  • Skin problems
  • Increased number of plasma cells
  • Elevated blood-platelet count
  • Problems with metabolism
  • Lower extremity edema
  • Blood clot formation
  • Abnormal lung function
  • Impaired tolerance of sugar (glucose)
  • Improper functioning of the immune system.

Most of the symptoms of POEMS syndrome are partly a result of the release of an atypical immunoglobulin - that is, a myeloma protein - along with certain cytokines by the malignant plasma cells.

POEMS Syndrome: Treatment

The treatment of POEMS syndrome is aimed at managing the clinical manifestations and potential progression rate of the disorder in individual patients. Generally, the treatment regimen for the patients is determined on the basis of the local versus systemic spread of clonal plasma cells. Depending on the individual case of each patient, some of the POEMS syndrome treatments include: Immunomodulatory imide drugs, surgical removal or radiotherapy of the tumors, low- or high-dose chemotherapy, and peripheral blood stem cell transplant.

What Gives Hair Its Colour ?

Overview

Hairs are the essential part of the human body which gives the human a particular identity, looks, and style. Like skin, hairs are of different colors. It can be black, brown, blond, or even red or something in between like strawberry blond. When we put a single hair under a microscope and then we will see granules of black, brown, yellow, or red pigment. What we see under the microscope are small particles of a pigment called melanin which is the same pigment which gives skin its color. Inside our hair follicles, special cells called melanocytes are found which produce melanin, which is deposited in the middle layer which is called cortex, it is a three-layered shaft. Pigment continues to form in the hair cells of the cortex as the hair grows upward. Some hair follicles produce more pigment than others. Hairs of eyebrow are the darkest colored hair in the human body.

Like our skin, hairs also have two types of melanin which are Eumelanin and pheomelanin. Where Eumelanin makes hair black or brown and Pheomelanin makes it red or blond. Only redheads or those carrying the genes for red hair make pheomelanin. Auburn-hairs are the result of pheomelanin which is nearly hidden by eumelanin and pheomelanin present in small amounts can make black hair shiny.

Pigment production is affected by ageing. Caucasians who are blond in infancy usually produce darker hair as they grow older. The gray or white hair of old age are the result of a loss of activity in the melanocytes. In young age, an enzyme called tyrosinase breaks apart the amino acid tyrosine as an important step in the production of melanin. As people get older, less of that enzyme is produced, so less melanin is produced. Eventually, the hair shaft grows out with little melanin. What's left is the color keratin. Keratin is the main protein which forms the structure of the hair shaft. Keratin without the combination of melanin looks yellowish gray.

Some Interesting Facts About our Hair Color

  • More the melanin in our hair, the darker will be its color. If people are born with light hair, it often gets darker with ageing.
  • As we grow older, your hair will probably get gray or white. This is due to less production of melanin, so your hair starts losing its color, which makes them look gray.
  • The total absence of melanin in hairs or in the body is called ALBINISM. It produces transparent follicles which are visible as white hair.
  • The hair on the human head have a growth of about one-half inch per month. Which should be around 6 inches per year. Hairs grows faster between the adolescence and 30 years of age, and in women more rapidly than in men. Hair grows faster in summer than in winter.
  • Melanin is made up of specialized pigment cells which are called melanocytes. They position themselves at the pores on the skin's surface through which hair follicles grow. Each hair grows from a single follicle.

The Process of Hair Growth has Three Phases

  • Anagen: This is the active growth stage of the hair fiber or follicles and can last from 2- 7 years. At any given time 80-85% of our hair is in the anagen phase.
  • Catagen: This phase is also referred to as the transitional phase, which is when hair growth begins to “shut down”. It generally lasts 10- 20 days.
  • Telogen: This occurs when hair growth is completely at rest and the hairs fibers fall out. At any given moment, 10-15 % of our hair is in the Telogen phase, this phase mostly lasts 100 days for scalp hair. After the Telogen phase, the hair growth process resumes again to the anagen phase.

When the hair is being formed, melanocytes inject pigment (melanin) into cells containing keratin. The protein keratin makes up our hair, skin, and nails. Throughout the years, melanocytes keep injecting pigment into the hair’s keratin, providing it a colorful hue. With age comes a reduction of melanin. The hair turns gray and eventually white.

With ever-changing lifestyles and food habits, people have become more addicted to fast foods, packed food items, fried foods, burgers, pizza and taking sugary products to have a bad effect on the production of melanin in the body which leads to premature graying of hair and other hair related problems.

Premature greying also give stress to younger people. People start using different types of colors which contains very harmful chemicals which can even cause the allergic condition in some people or irritation to the skin.

Ayurvedic Aspect

In Ayurveda hair are considered as the mala of Asthi dhatu and proper nourishment of Asthi dhatu also makes the growth of hair very healthy. In Ayurveda premature greying of hair is called palitya. Greying of hair is a pure Pitta disorder that occurs due to the vitiation of Pitta dosha. This is why people with predominant Pitta constitution tend to have gray hairs earlier than others. Excessive Pitta present in the sebaceous glands which reside at the hair roots, called folliculitis can also result in hair loss and graying prematurely of hair.

Pitta-provoking habits such as excessive passion, anger, and physical strain result in graying of hair. One must also avoid Pitta-genic beverages like alcohol, tea and coffee. Intake of spicy, oily, salty and sour, fermented foods along with meat can aggravate Pitta.

But apart from being a primarily Pitta problem, the Vagbhata classified palitya according to the dosha predominance.

  • Vata dosha: In vata predominance Hairs develop split ends; brittle, dry and rough in texture; color appears shimmery and transparent like water
  • Pitta dosha: In pitta predominance Scalp shows signs of burning; hairs have a yellowish tinge
  • Kapha dosha: In kapha predominance Hairs are thick, long and exceptionally white in color

Greying of here with ageing is a normal phenomenon but due to drastic changes in our lifestyles and improper eating habits which leads to untimely greying of hair. The stress and strain in our daily life have induced palitya (premature greying). Palitya is commonly seen piitaj Prakriti purusha or when pitta is predominant in our body or vitiated in the body.

For maintaining healthy color and structure of the hair one should adhere to healthy life style and healthy dietary habits. Should take more green vegetables and fruits in diet. Fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin B complex, vitamin A, biotin and other minerals should be taken more frequently. Oil massaging hair is the oldest and the most traditional remedy for the extra shiny and soft stresses. You can either use olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil or bhringraj oil. Slightly warm the oil and massage your scalp thoroughly usually do it at night. Leave it for one hour before washing. Using olive oil is greatly preferred as it strengthens the roots and prevents hair breakage and keep their texture healthy. Massage olive oil on your scalp and leave it overnight for better conditioning and wash it in the morning. This is also the best home remedy to maintain healthy hair.

One should avoid such a diet which is more pitta predominant or which vitiate pitta dosha like all spicy, fried food items. All these food items vitiate pitta dosha which decreases the ranjak pitta function and also combining with vayu leads to discoloration of hair which is called as Palitya. In Ayurveda, this condition is called palitya.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Spermatocele - Symptoms, Causes and Diagnosis

Overview

Spermatocele or Spermatic Cyst is a fluid filled sack that grows in the epididymis (along, tightly coiled tube near the upper testicle that collects and transport sperms). It may also be called Epididymal Cyst as the cyst is formed in the Epididymis.

Spermatocele is mostly painless but may cause some pain if they grow too large. They can be of different sizes. They are smooth and filled with whitish liquid. It may feel like a firm lump in the scrotum on top of the testicle. They are benign or non-cancerous and may hold sperms that are no longer alive.

A Spermatocele does not affect a man's fertility but may reduce the quality or quantity of sperm produced if the Spermatocele is large. It is not a serious medical issue. They don't increase the risk of Testicular Cancer but they might get uncomfortable if the cyst grows too large.

Cause of Spermatocele

The real cause of Spermatocele is unknown. It could be caused by the obstruction or blockage of the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. Faults in the male reproductive tract can cause a mass to grow near the top and behind the testicles. They are very common especially in males between 20 to 50 years of age. These cysts rarely develop in bodies before they attain teenage.

Symptoms of Spermatocele

Men with Spermatoceles do not complain of any symptoms except the feeling of heaviness or dull pain in the scrotum or feeling of fullness in the testicle. Spermatoceles cannot be seen during a visual exam but can be felt as a lump.

Diagnosis of Spermatocele

A detailed examination of the genital area helps in diagnosis of Spermatocele. The doctor needs to feel the testicles to search for lump that are painful to touch. Tests like Transillumination, Ultrasound may also be done to confirm the cyst.

Useful Tips

A balanced diet which has less fat content surely helps in treating Spermatocele.A diet that included more alkalizing foods and less acidic foods helps in reducing inflammations.Tropical applications of iodine, magnesium and chromium chloride may also be used to treat Spermatocele. A diet rich in iodine goes a long way in preventing and treating Spermatocele as cyst usually develops due to deficiency of iodine.

Although Spermatocele won`t go away on its own, in most cases no treatment is needed. Regular self examination is very important to check the size of the lump. There are no ways to prevent Spermatocele.

A procedure called Aspiration, in which the doctor inserts a needle into the cyst to remove the fluid, is done to relieve pain and pressure of Spermatoceles. Another procedure is Sclero Therapy to drain the fluid. This procedure might damage the Epididymis. Spermatocele is a condition that might recur even after surgery is performed. Regular checkups and follow ups are needed.

Rhinocerebral Aspergillosis Treatment in Ayurveda

Rhinocerebral Aspergillosis (RA) is a highly fatal infection, particularly in immune-suppressed patients as well as people who have undergone bone marrow transplantation (BMT).With the cases of occurrence of Rhinocerebral aspergillosis in patients undergoing BMT having become increasingly common, the condition can involve almost all of the major head and neck structures, including the nose, orbits and paranasal sinuses. One of the potentially life-threatening complications of RA is the intracranial extension of the infection, which is evidently the biggest concern linked to the disease.

Rhinocerebral aspergillosis (RA), like other Aspergillosis diseases, is believed to be caused by a type of fungus called Aspergillus. It is a common mold (fungus) which exists indoors and outdoors, and most people breathe in its spores every day without falling sick. However, the potential risk of developing health problems related to Aspergillus is fairly high for people who have a weakened immune system or those who are suffering from lung diseases.

Rhinocerebral aspergillosis (RA) is a disease which is difficult to diagnose because of its non-specific presenting symptoms, especially in BMT patients with fever, leukopenia, and concomitant infections. Nonetheless, an important diagnostic tool for the disease is Computed Tomography (CT); with the final confirmation of the diagnosis requiring microbiologic and/or histologic examinations.

Rhinocerebral Aspergillosis: Symptoms

The symptoms of Rhinocerebral aspergillosis (RA) typically depend on the organs which are affected by the infection. However, some of the common indications of the disease include:

  • Chest pain
  • Joint pain
  • Hemoptysis (Cough which brings up blood-streaked sputum)
  • Turbid yellow or straw-colored nasal discharge
  • Severe bleeding from the lungs
  • Headaches
  • Eye problems/visual loss
  • Nosebleed
  • Disorientation
  • Seizures
  • Swelling on one side of the face
  • Facial pain and tenderness.

Rhinocerebral Aspergillosis: Treatment

The treatment of Rhinocerebral aspergillosis (RA) generally involves surgical debridement, irrigation of the affected cavity, and systemic anti-fungal therapy with amphotericin B, which is presently the most preferred drug for most systemic mycoses.

Ayurvedic Treatment of Scriptophobia ( Fear Of Writing In Public)

SCRIPTOPHOBIA: OVERVIEW

scriptophobia

Scriptophobia is a social anxiety disorder, which can simply be described as an extreme -- and generally irrational -- fear of writing in public. Similar to other social anxiety disorders which result in avoidance of social situations, Scriptophobia may start in childhood/adolescence, because of certain factors like social traumas or embarrassments. Sometimes, this disorder may also be accompanied by other anxiety disorders or depression.

The term ‘Scriptophobia’ is derived from a combination of Latin word ‘script’ which means ‘writing;’ and Greek word ‘phobos’ which means ‘fear’ or ‘dread.’ Scriptophobia can affect men and women equally.

Like most other phobias/fears, Scriptophobia is also a result of a subconscious overprotection mechanism. The phobia may usually get triggered due to an unresolved emotional conflict, a negative experience in the past, a deep-seated lack of self-esteem, or the fear of bullying/maltreatment by others. Interestingly, one of the possible causes of this fear of writing can also be a fear of excess success.

People suffering from Scriptophobia are afraid of ridicule, criticism, rejection, and embarrassment. As such, in some cases, the disorder may have an adverse effect on the day-to-day lives of the sufferers. In students, in particular, Scriptophobia can be debilitating because it can lead to panic attacks each time the sufferer has to write in the class. The phobia may, therefore, hinder an affected student’s progress in school and have an impact on his/her scholarly achievements. Some students may even give up education because of this fear of writing.

Scriptophobia can sometimes lead to a related disorder called ‘Graphophobia,’ in which the affected individuals develop a strange complex which makes them feel afraid of writing down their personal thoughts. Such individuals may feel that their writing may have devastating outcomes because their innermost thoughts may get exposed.

SYMPTOMS OF SCRIPTOPHOBIA

Patients suffering from Scriptophobia may show diverse physical and emotional indications of the disorder, depending on the extent to which they fear writing. Some patients may avoid writing altogether, while others may become excessively guarded or particular about what they write.

Generally speaking, some of the common symptoms of Scriptophobia are:

  • Extreme Anxiety, Dread
  • Excessive Sweating
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Rapid Breathing
  • Nausea
  • Dry Mouth
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Confusion / Inability to communicate clearly
  • Lack of Focus
  • Shaking
  • Feelings of powerlessness
  • Fear or feeling of loss of control
  • Avoidance of social situations.

Scriptophobia may cause an affected individual, especially children, to feel continually depressed, isolated, and anxious. Most children suffering from Scriptophobia may develop some other fears as well. They may be scared of sleeping alone or develop a tendency to remain lonely, or may have imaginary friends. Some children might even experience bed-wetting due to this fear of writing.

SCRIPTOPHOBIA: TREATMENT

For treating Scriptophobia, doctors usually depend on three types of anti-anxiety drugs --- benzodiazepines, anti-depressants and beta-blockers.

In addition some of the other treatment methods for managing this fear of writing may include Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Therapy (CT), Habit Strategies To Relax, Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy, Group Therapy, Energy Psychology, In Vivo Exposure, Response Prevention, and Meditation. The use of therapies is specifically important for the treatment of Scriptophobia in younger patients.

Besides anti-anxiety medications and therapies, Scriptophobia can also be effectively managed in a natural manner, with the help of some excellent herbal products prepared by renowned Ayurveda experts at Planet Ayurveda herbal manufacturing company. Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML) Treatment in Ayurveda

PROGRESSIVE MULTIFOCAL LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY (PML): OVERVIEW

progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare, serious and aggressive viral disease of the central nervous system.

In this disease, the ‘white matter’ of the brain gets progressively damaged or inflamed at a number of locations. ‘White matter’ refers to the cells which produce ‘myelin’ --- a fatty substance that coats and protects the brain’s nerve fibers and helps conduct electrical signals. The damage caused to the ‘white matter’ can hamper a person’s ability to move, think, and feel sensations.

Since the damaged ‘white matter’ of the brain does not grow back, the effects of nerve damage in PML patients are permanent, and may be similar to the problems linked to a stroke. The disease can also lead to memory loss and paralysis.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is, therefore, a potentially fatal disease which typically attacks part of the brain when the body is unable to fight off diseases in the way it naturally should. The key cause of PML is a virus called the ‘John Cunningham’ (JC) virus, which attacks the ‘myelin.’

Although nearly 85% of the adults have the JC virus, most adults do not have any health problems linked to the virus because a normal, healthy immune system can keep it in check. However, in individuals who have a weak immune system, the virus affects the central nervous system and causes PML disease.

SYMPTOMS OF PML

The early symptoms of Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) depend on the nerves which are damaged or inflamed first, because of the onset of the disease. Hence, the symptoms may initially be different for different individuals, and may affect virtually any part of the body.

Nonetheless, some of the symptoms which are generally associated with PML include:

  • General weakness which steadily keeps getting worse
  • Clumsiness or loss of coordination
  • Difficulty in walking
  • Difficulty using the arms/legs
  • Weak muscles
  • Facial drooping
  • Sensory loss
  • Eyesight problems or loss of vision
  • Changes in personality
  • Difficulty in speaking, or loss of language skills
  • Mental slowness
  • Memory problems.

TREATMENT

The treatment of Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is aimed at improving the immune system of the affected individuals with the help of certain medications, therapies or procedures, including Plasma exchange (via blood transfusion), Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), and Supportive and Investigational therapies.

However, there is no specific treatment of PML because the cause of occurrence of the disease, and some other health considerations, are taken into account for its treatment. As such, treatment methods are based on individual circumstances of the patients.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy can safely be managed in a natural way, with the help of some excellent herbal products available from Planet Ayurveda herbal manufacturing company. These herbal products -- prepared under the guidance of renowned Ayurveda experts -- include:
