INTRODUCTION

Antiphospholipid syndrome is known as hughes syndrome or sticky blood. It is an autoimmune disorder that causes increased risk of blood clots. Blood clots can form in the legs, lungs, kidneys, and spleen. This clots can lead to heart attack, strokes and in pregnancy it leads to miscarriage and still birth. Patients with antiphospholipid have greater risk of DVT (deep vein thrombosis), arterial thrombosis (heart attack or stroke), blood clots in the brain leads to problems with speech, memory. Antiphospholipid syndrome leads to rapid organ failure due to generalized thrombosis known as Catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome. It affects people of all age groups including children and babies.

FACTS OF APLA SYNDROME

  • Antiphospholipid antibodies are present in 15 -20% of deep vein thrombosis and ⅓ in strokes patient above 50 years.
  • There are chances of recurrence of the symptoms but if adequate therapy is provided it can prevent the recurrence.
  • The main treatment is to prevent the blood clots by anti platelet drugs.
  • Risk of thrombosis must be known such as diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and many underlying autoimmune diseases.

TYPES OF APLA SYNDROME

  1. Primary Antiphospholipid Syndrome - It is not linked with any disease or condition.
  2. Secondary Antiphospholipid Syndrome - It develops with another autoimmune disorder such as Lupus.

CAUSES OF APLA SYNDROME

Antiphospholipid is an autoimmune condition that means the immune system mistakenly attacks the immune system. In this syndrome the immune system produces abnormal antibodies called antiphospholipid antibodies which target the proteins which are attached to the fat molecules (phospholipids). Phospholipids are the cell membrane which plays an important role in blood clotting. If antibodies attack on fat molecules there is an increased risk of blood clots, as fat and proteins are important products for maintaining blood consistency. So blood becomes sticky and risk increases blood clots.
