How to remove tan naturally? - 10 Effective Home Remedies


Sun tanning or simply tanning is the process in which skin color is darkened or tanned. This is mostly due toexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight.

But sometimes tanning is also caused due to some sort of artificial sources, such as a tanning lamp found in indoor tanning beds. Some people use chemical products which can also produce an effect of tanning with no exposure to ultraviolet radiation, known as sunless tanning.

But most commonly, when the skin comes in the contact of UV radiations of the sun, then tanning happens.

In most cases, suntans are patchy and irregular, causing blemishes and dark spots as a result of skin damage. Prolonged skin damage is usually hard to treat, which is why it is important to try to prevent sun damage from occurring in the first place.

1. Lemon Juice And Honey

Lemon juice is rich in Vitamin C, which works as a tan removal agent, removal of acne and lightening of dark spots and uneven skin. Lemon juice has a bleaching effect which helps in removing tan quickly, efficiently and naturally.


  • Squeeze fresh lemon juice and add some honey to it.
  • Apply this mixture on your skin.
  • Leave it for about half an hour.
  • Rinse it off with an herbal cleanser.
  • Do it once or twice daily.

2. Turmeric And Gram Flour

Gram flour has certain properties that treat sun tan. Zinc present in gram flour helps to fight infections that cause your skin to erupt with acne as well as soothe inflamed skin.

Turmeric contains anti-ageing as well as skin lightening properties that protects skin against the harmful UV radiations of the sun. It also fixes the problem of dark spots.


  • Take 2 tablespoon gram flour, a pinch of turmeric and 1tablespoon of rose water or raw milk.
  • Make a paste and apply this paste on the cleansed area.
  • Leave it for good 30 min or till the pack is completely dries up.
  • Gently remove the pack by scrubbing first with the help of a few drops of water.
  • Apply this pack every alternate day for the best result.

3. Gram Flour, Lemon Juice And Yogurt

Vitamin C present inthelemon will give your skin a boost and the tan would fade off.

Yogurt, on the other hand, heals the sunburn areas and removes skin tan. It is rich in Zinc and has anti-inflammatory properties.


  • Mix 4 teaspoons of besan (Gram Flour) with 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and yogurt.
  • Apply the mask all over your face and neck or the affected area.
  • Wait until it dries.
  • Rinse with cool water.
  • You can also repeat this process daily before taking a bath.

4. Papaya And Honey

Papaya is known for skin lightening properties as it is rich in enzymes.

Honey helps in hydration of the skin

Both of these in combination works to reduce the visibility of certain blemishes or scars on the skin.


  • Take half a cup of pulp extract from mashed ripe papaya and add a tablespoon of honey into it.
  • Mix it well before applying the mask over the skin
  • Let it be for half an hour and wash it off properly
  • Apply this mask twice or thrice in a week.

5. Tomato And Yogurt

Tomatoes are known for making the skin look brighter and glowing.

Yogurt is rich in lactic acid which acts as a natural exfoliator for the skin. It helps in removing of suntan and any skin pigmentation scars too.


  • Take one tablespoon of tomato pulp along with one tablespoon of plain organic yogurt in order to form a paste.
  • You need to apply this mixture on the affected area due to thesun.
  • Let it dry for around thirty minutes before washing it off.
  • This process needs to be carried out at least twice a week to get visible results.

6. Aloe Vera And Lemon Juice

Aloe Vera has various antibacterial properties which help it to fight skin tans and skin blemishes too.


  • Take one Aloe Vera leaf; wash it off properly before taking out its gel and you can also take organic Aloe Vera gel if you don’t have an aloe vera plant in your home.
  • Add a few drops of lemon juice in it and blend it well
  • Apply it on the tanned areas of the skin.
  • Leave it for about 20 minutes and then wash the area gently.
  • This amazing pack can be applied to the skin daily in order to get effective results.

7. Baking Soda

Baking soda works wonder on the skin when talks about the removal of tan. It has amazing bleaching properties which helps in removing any kind of skin pigmentation or blemishes too.


  • This process needs to be done during bathing time.
  • Simple take some amount of baking soda on your palm and then dampen it with water.
  • Scrub the baking soda on the tanned areas of your skin before washing it off.
  • You can do this process twice or thrice a week with the help of baking soda.

8. Fuller's Earth, Aloe Vera, Rosewater And Turmeric

Fuller's Earth is better known as Multani Mitti in India andis considered to be a great skin healer. It has a healing agent and works quickly on the suntan areas of the skin.


  • You need to take few spoons of Multani mitti (fuller’s earth in a bowl, some amount of aloe vera gel, add a pinch of turmeric and considerate amount of rose to make a paste. Make sure it is not dripping.
  • Apply this mask over the affected area of the skin.
  • Let it be for about 15minutes or until the paste gets dried off.
  • Wash the area while scrubbing it off gently.
  • Apply this mask twice a week.

9. Rice Flour, Tomato And Turmeric

Rice flour is considered to be as an anti-ageing agent which helps in improving the skin tone by removing tan marks, dark spots, and pigmentations, etc. of the skin.


  • Mix one tablespoon of rice flour, some amount of tomato pulp or juice and a pinch of turmeric.
  • Make a fine paste.
  • Apply on the tanned skin.
  • Leave it about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Wash it off gently.
  • Use this mask regularly for better result.

10. Potato

Raw potato has natural bleaching properties as well as rich in vitamin c. They give soothing effect on sunburn and very effective in the removal of tan from the skin.


  • Peel off a medium -sized potato and blend it to make a fine paste.
  • Apply it directly on the affected areas of the skin which have been suntanned.
  • Let it dry  for some time around half an hour
  • Then wash it off
  • You can also add a few drops of lemon juice in it.
  • Apply daily till the tan goes off.
