Polymyalgia Rheumatica is a common chronic inflammatory condition with unknown etiology. This disease mainly affects the adults over the age of 50 that causes muscle pain and stiffness in various parts of the body but mainly shoulder, hips, arms, and neck are affected. It commonly affects women more in comparison to men.

Herbal Remedies For Polymyalgia Rheumatica

1. Lakshadi Guggul

Lakshadi Guggul

Its main ingredient is Guggul which grows in deserts. Laksha is a resin of Ficus religiosa. It is a wonderful product prepared by Planet Ayurveda which is useful in enhancing the calcium deposition in bones. The major ingredients of this formulation are Laksha (Laccifer lacca), Arjuna (Terminalia arjuna), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shuddh Guggulu (Purified Commiphora mukul), Nagbala (Grewia populifolia) and Asthisamharaka (Cissus quadrangularis). This formulation helps in binding the empty and broken bones and fills them with calcium. This deposition of calcium in the bones makes them strong and healthy.

  • Laksha: This herb heals the broken and weak bones.
  • Arjuna: Arjuna is a very effective herb and shows good results in this disease. This herb heals the non-healing wounds in a shorter period of time and is rich in calcium.

The major ingredients of yograj guggul is Devdaru (Cedrus deodara) , Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica), Shudh guggul (Commiphora mukul), Pippali (Piper longum), Ela (Eletteria cardamomum), Jeeraka (Cuminum cyminum), Mustaka (Cyprus rotundus) and Ardraka (Zingiber officinale).

  • Yograj Guggulu is useful in disorders related to bones and joints. This product balances the Vata dosha.

3. Punarnava Mandur

Punarnava mandur is prepared from several natural herbs such as punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa), pippali (Piper longum), Shunti (Zingiber officinale), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Chitrak mool (Plumbago zeylanica), Maricha (Piper nigrum), Chavya (Piper chaba), Vidanga (Embelia ribes) and mandoor bhasma (Ferric oxide calx).

The main ingredient of Punarnava Mandur is Punarnava. Some of the uses of Punarnava are:

Root of this herb are emetic, diuretic, laxative, and expectorant. Punarnava is an anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrinolytic and anti-convulsant herb. This herb is also useful in splenomegaly, ascites, anemia, jaundice and other inflammatory conditions. It is an effective remedy for fluid retention.

  • Shunthi: Shunthi is an excellent carminative and stimulant herb. This herb lowers the cholesterol and also has a blood thinner property. It also provides relief in swelling around joints and the fluid accumulated in it.
  • Pippali: Pippali is used as a stimulant in both respiratory and digestive disorders. This herb is helpful in stimulating appetite and also alleviates muscular pain and inflammation.
  • Maricha: Maricha is used as a digestive stimulant. This herb has anti-inflammatory as well as analgesic properties.
  • Amalaki: Amalaki has carminative, anti-bacterial, diuretic and astringent properties. This herb also acts as an antioxidant that inhibits the oxidation process, by preventing the damage of healthy cells caused by free radicals. By its diuretic property, this herb increases the production of urine and eliminates the toxins from the body.
  • Haritaki: Haritaki is useful in increasing appetite and also acts as a mild laxative that makes the stools soft and increases the bowel movements. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic.
  • Chavya: Chavya is anti-inflammatory, diuretic and anti-diarrheal in nature. This also stimulates the digestive system and also acts as a carminative.
  • Haridra: This herb is useful in reducing swelling, pain and also useful in wound healing.
  • Chitrak moola: Chitrak mool is used as a carminative. This herb reduces the swelling and inflammation related to bones. It is also useful in digestive disorders.
  • Mandoor Bhasma: Mandoor bhasma is prepared by purifying and calcinations of iron rust. This herb is useful in treating anemia, jaundice, intestinal worms, menorrhagia, dysmenorrhea, and chronic bowel movements. It removes toxins from the body and provides relief in swelling, inflammation and other related symptoms.

DOSAGE: 2 tablets twice daily with plain water after 30 mins of the meals.

4. Ajmodadi Churna

Ajmodadi Churna

Ajmodadi churna is a powdered herbal formulation whose main ingredient is ajmod. This herb is very light to digest and also helpful in pacifying Vata and Kapha Dosha. The main ingredients are Ajmod (Carum roxburghianum), Vayavidang (Embelia ribes), Devdaru (Cedrus deodara), Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica), Pipal (Ficus religiosa), Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Saunth (Zingiber officinale), Vridhh Daru (Argyresia speciosa) and saindhav lavana.

This formulation is useful in balancing Vata and Kapha doshas. By its anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, this formulation reduces the pain as well as inflammation related to joints and bones. It improves the activity of muscles, joints and also acts as an anti-oxidant.

DOSAGE: 2 to 3 grams twice daily after meals.



5. Maharasnadi Kashayam (Kwath)

Maharasnadi kashayam is a herbal formulation that cures Vata disorders such as gout, knee pain, hernia, locked jaw etc. The major ingredients are rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Dhanvayasa (Alhagi pseudalhagi), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Vasa (Adhatoda vasica), Ginger (Zingiber officinalis), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) etc.

DOSAGE: 12 to 24 ml before meals with an equal amount of water.
