It leads to formation of pimples, blackheads and whiteheads on chest, upper back, shoulders forehead and face. It is seen most common among teens and people of almost all age.

Effective treatments are available, but acne can be stubborn. In this the pimples dry out and heal slowly leading to cropping up of others. This condition can lead to low self - esteem, emotional and unwanted scars on the skin.

Symptoms include the following:

  • Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips
  • Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin (nodules)
  • Painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin (cystic lesions)
  • Blackheads (open plugged pores)
  • Small red, tender bumps (papules)

Factors causing acne can be:

  • Bacteria.
  • Activity of a type of hormone.

Factors that may make the acne worse and painful:

  • Hormones- During hormonal changes Androgens increase in boys and girls and cause sebaceous glands to become enlarged.
  • Medications- Drugs which contain corticosteroids, testosterone and lithium.
  • Diet-Skimmed milk and food rich in carbohydrate like bread, bagels, chips and chocolates.
  • Stress. Stress is the prime factor for acne.

  • Greasy foods - Oil sticks to skin and blocks the hair follicles and cause acne.
  • Hygiene - Scrubbing skin hard, cleansing with alkaline soaps and chemicals too irritate the skin making acne worse.
  • Cosmetics- Non- oily cosmetics have little interference over effectiveness of acne drugs.

  • Dapsone

  • One should wash problem areas with a good quality gentle cleanser. Twice a day, wash your face with a mild soap and warm water. If you tend to develop acne around your hairline, shampoo your hair every day. And be gentle if you're shaving affected skin.
  • One must also try the over-the-counter acne products for drying out excess of oil and helps in peeling –Use products which have benzoyl peroxide as active.

Non- prescription acne medications might lead to initial side effects like redness, dryness and scaling which improves after the first month of using them.

  • Try not to come in contact of irritants – Stay away from oily food, sunscreens, greasy cosmetics, hairstyling products and acne concealers. Use only water-based and non-comedogenic products.
  • Always protect your skin from sun- Sun worsens acne.
  • Avoid excess and annoying friction or pressure on your skin- Try to protect acne-prone skin from phones, helmets, tight collars, straps, and backpacks.
  • Avoid touching, peeling and picking at the problem areas- This is because it may trigger more acne and lead to infection along with scarring.
  • One must take shower after strenuous activities- This is required because oil and sweat on your skin can lead to breakouts.
