Herbal Remedies for Atopic Dermatitis (AD) - Signs, Symptoms, Causes & Complications

ATOPIC DERMATITIS

Atopic dermatitis (AD) also known as ‘Atopic eczema’ is a chronic eczematous skin condition, which is characterized by inflammation of the skin. The condition is generally non-contagious, and it mostly affects infants and children because it generally develops in early childhood. The severity of the condition may change with time .In some cases, the condition may persist into adulthood.

Atopic dermatitis is sometimes called ‘Neurodermatitis’ (lichen simplex chronicus), though some medical practitioners and patients may even refer to the condition simply as Eczema.

In infants and toddlers, Atopic dermatitis may affect almost the whole body; making the skin itchy, red, cracked and swollen. As children grow, the condition usually affects the skin of the cheeks, neck, elbow, ankles, and knee creases. The condition tends to flare-up periodically.

The exact cause for the occurrence of Atopic dermatitis is not known. However, most of the patients have ‘hypersensitive skin’ and a family history of the condition. In addition, these patients may also be prone to inhalant allergies, and appear to have a misguided immune response.

Atopic dermatitis can be triggered or become worse by several factors which mainly include seasonal allergies, low humidity, cold weather, environmental factors, and exposure to harsh soaps/detergents.

SYMPTOMS OF ATOPIC DERMATITIS

The symptoms of Atopic dermatitis may vary from person to person. However, some of the common symptoms which mark the occurrence of the condition include:

  • Thickening of the affected part of skin
  • Excessively dry skin
  • Reddish or brownish-grey patches
  • Severe itchiness, particularly at night
  • Cracked, crusty or scaly skin
  • Formation of tiny blisters which may ooze fluid when scratched
  • Sensitive and swollen skin due to scratching

COMPLICATIONS OF ATOPIC DERMATITIS

Many patients affected by Atopic dermatitis may develop hay fever or asthma. Moreover, the condition may also lead to some other complications which commonly include:

  • Chronic itchy or scaly skin
  • Irritant hand dermatitis
  • Skin infections
  • Sleep-related disorders
  • Allergic contact dermatitis.
