Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Treatment in Ayurveda

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative bacteria. This bacteria causes diseases in humans, plants and animals. This bacteria is commonly found in the environment like soil, water and other moist locations. This bacteria is a common encapsulated gram-negative, strict aerobic, rod-shaped bacteria. These bacteria can thrive not only in a normal environment but also thrive in low oxygen atmospheres and colonize many natural and artificial environments. This bacteria is a multidrug resistant pathogen which is also known as MDR pathogen and is known for its antibiotic resistant properties. It affects the organs like eyes, lungs, kidneys, skin, etc. This bacteria mostly affects people who are already immunocompromised or who are associated with serious illnesses. It attacks the weak immune system and produces tissue damaging toxins. The people who are suffering from cancer and have burns are more susceptible to this bacterial infection. In this article we are going to discuss this bacteria and its Ayurvedic aspect in detail.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa

AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA

We can correlate this disease with Krimi roga, specifically Raktaj krimi. These parasites have minute size, round in shape and without legs and some parasites are microscopic in size. According to the Ayurveda, our Acharya said that low agni (Weak digestion) is the main cause of parasite growth. People with weak digestion or improper digestion for a longer period are ideal hosts for parasite invasion. Parasite affects more on vata and kapha predominant people. Hence Agni also plays an important role in krimi roga (disease). “Krimi klavye medhyati” means those organisms which invade the skin are called krimi (parasites).

ETIOLOGY/CAUSES

This infection of this disease is caused when a person is immunocompromised or when the patient is already hospitalized. This bacterial infection is transmitted via ventilator support or any other medical instrument. An infection is also created in burn patients or in any other wounds that have direct exposure to the external environment. The incubation period is 24-72 hours.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENT OF PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA INFECTION3

This shloka states that in all parasitic infections we should do extraction of these parasites first and then destroy the source of their origin and at last avoid the etiological factors of the disease.

  1. Apakarshan Procedure (Extraction of Worms): The apakarshan procedure mentioned by Acharya Charaka is the extraction of worms either with the help of hands or with the help of some instruments. If parasites are invaded in the internal organs of the body then eliminative therapy should be done. This means that with the help of medicated drugs we should do shiro virechana (administration of medicine through the nasal route), vaman (emesis), virechana (purgation), asthapana basti (non-unctuous enema).
  2. Prakriti Vighata (Extinction of Etiology): For this procedure, we have to use pungent, bitter, astringent, alkaline and hot drugs for the destruction of the source of the origin of parasites and also use other measures that are contrary to kapha dosha. This is called prakriti vighata treatment.
  3. Nidana Parivarjana (Etiology Avoidance): This is the basic treatment protocol for all diseases and it is also known as Ardhachikitsa (half way of treatment). One should avoid the etiological factors (mentioned above) which mean those things which aggravate the disease.
