Monomelic Amyotrophy Treatment in Ayurveda - Motor Neuron Disorder

Monomelic amyotrophy is a motor neuron disorder. A motor neuron is a cell in the brain and spinal cord that allows us to move, swallow, speak and breathe. These cells send commands from the brain to the muscles that carry out the normal functioning of swallowing, moving, speaking and breathing. The nerve of these cells is the longest in the body. This is the part of the central nervous system and these cells connect the muscles, glands, and organs throughout the body. Motor neuron diseases are a group of rare neurodegenerative disorders. These neurodegenerative disorders affect the motor neurons (cells that control voluntary muscles of the body). In this article, we are going to discuss one of the motor neuron diseases is Monomelic amyotrophy and its Ayurvedic management.

INTRODUCTION

Monomelic Amyotrophy is a rare motor neuron disorder that is characterized by muscle weakness in the upper extremities. This disease affects the lower motor neurons. These are the cells that help to communicate information between the brain and muscles that are involved in movements (skeletal muscles). This disease causes weakness and loss of muscle mass in the arms and fingers. It is marked by the insidious onset of muscle atrophy. This disease was first described in 1959 in Japan.

ETIOLOGY / CAUSES

The cause of this disease is due to impaired functioning of the anterior horn cells of the lower cervical cord. But this cause is not fully understood and is still considered unknown. Some researchers believe that the cervical dural sac and compressive flattening of the lower cervical cord is the cause of this disease. It is also thought that this disease occurs because the material that surrounds the spinal cord is displaced. This is all because of the downward movement of the neck. Family history is also considered one of the causes of this disease.

CLINICAL FEATURES / SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

A person may experience the following symptoms:

  • Muscle weakness in the hands
  • Fasciculations
