Treatment of Antisynthetase Syndrome in Ayurveda with Herbal Remedies

It might sound like a new term, but this malady has been bothering human civilization since the early centuries.

Syndrome, as the name suggests, is a combination of many signs and symptoms. Antisynthetase syndrome is a rare, chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the functionality of muscles and various other body parts. The exact cause for the formation of the disease is unknown to man. The array of symptoms portrayed may vary from individual to individual and often include myositis or muscle inflammation, polyarthritis or inflammation of multiple joints, intestinal lung disease, thickening and cracking of hands, and raynaud phenomenon. There is increased prevalence and complex severity of interstitial lung disease in patients with antisynthetase syndrome as compared to other autoimmune conditions. The auto antibodies formed in this disease may be an after effect of other viral infections or genetic predisposition.

Antisynthetase Syndrome

LET'S TAKE A DEEPER PEEP

Despite showing a multiple of symptoms most commonly individuals affected with this syndrome show fever, loss of appetite, muscle inflammation, mechanical hands (Extra thickening of the skin in the tips and margins of fingers). Some studies suggest that the affected people may be at an increased risk to develop various types of tumors as well. As the symptoms do vary from individual to individual the same trend is perceived in the intensity of the same. The diagnosis of the condition is often suspected based on the presence of characteristic signs and symptoms, once other diseases that cause the similar features are being ruled out. The basic diagnostic principle developed from blood tests to laboratory investigation and biopsy depending on the extent of chronicity of the disease.

TREATMENT PROTOCOL

Like any other autoimmune malody, antisynthetase syndrome can only be managed by the judicious use of corticosteroids as the primary line of management, these medications may be administered orally or as intravenous injections. Immunosuppressive medications are also often prescribed to alleviate the drastic functions of the immune system. While, with oral medications, physical therapy is often necessary to improve general debility, weakness, further reduced muscle wasting and prevent muscle contractures.  On a long term outlook the prognosis of these conditions varies based on the severity of the condition and the symptomatology is seen. As the immune system is compromised other chronic manifestations are seen as the complications of antisynthetase syndrome.

AYURVEDA AND ANTISYNTHETASE SYNDROME

In the age-old science of ayurveda,  all the diseases found as a result of the imbalances arised within the bodily humours  of Vata, Pitta and KaphaOjas or the quantum of immunity maintains the optimal functioning of the immune system. It is when this immune system is disrupted the body processes snags like autoimmunity and hypersensitivity. Kapha dosha in its most primitive state aids in the development of Ojas, while Vata transcends them throughout the body. The most basic figure achieved by adopting ayurvedic principles is to establish the normalsy in Ojas by alleviating the wavering conditions in the bodilly entities.

In ayurveda the exact correlation to many modern maladies might not be present. The treatment for the condition is initiated by drawing similarities with the predominance of specific entities. Detox procedures administered to an individual for a specific disease depend greatly on the health status and physique of the individual. Depending on the intensity of the disease the detox procedure may or may not be combined with suitable oral supplements while changing the dietary regulations and lifestyle adaptations for the affected patients.
