WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY ATAXIA?

Ataxia is a rare degenerative disease of the nervous system which is characterized by slurred speech, stumbling, falling, and incoordination. WHAT CAN BE THE CAUSES?

It is genetic disorder which is caused by the defect or mutations in the gene FXN called as frataxin gene which leads to limit in formation of a protein called frataxin, important for mitochondrial functioning in regulating the iron levels in the mitochondria, involved in energy production necessary for all cell bodies in the cells.

  • Cerebellum malformation while the baby is still in the womb.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

AYURVEDIC VIEW OF ATAXIA

It is considered as Beej dosha disease. The protein frataxin is correlated with prana vata that controls the action of udana and in turn vyana vata is impaired and induced gati. Due to decreased pranayatna (action potential), less ATP production (urga karma) is there. This leads to decreased cellular metabolism (known as bala in ayurveda), due to which ama drvya is produced at the cellular levels. This ama leads to obstruction and iron alternation reacts with oxygen to produce free radicals (known as ama visha) and destroys cellular processes.
