Ayurvedic Treatment for Ataxia - Types, Symptoms, Causes & Herbal Remedies

Ataxia is a rare degenerative disease of the nervous system which is characterized by slurred speech, stumbling, falling, and incoordination. These symptoms are related to degeneration of the part of the brain, called the cerebellum that is responsible for coordinating movement. Ataxia is a disease that affects people of all ages.

  1. Ataxia Telangiectasia
  2. Episodic Ataxia
  3. Friedreich’s Ataxia
  4. Multiple System Atrophy
  5. Spinocerebellar Ataxia
  6. Sporadic Ataxia

It is genetic disorder which is caused by the defect or mutations in the gene FXN called as frataxin gene which leads to limit in formation of a protein called frataxin, important for mitochondrial functioning in regulating the iron levels in the mitochondria, involved in energy production necessary for all cell bodies in the cells.

It is most common in the person who has family history with this disease.

Other Causes May Include:

  • Brain surgery or Head injury.
  • Alcohol or Drug abuse.
  • Infections – chicken pox (usually goes away after infection has gone).
  • A brain tumor.
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals.
  • Neurological conditions – Multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy etc.
  • Cerebellum malformation while the baby is still in the womb.

Common Symptoms of Ataxia are:

  • Lack Of Coordination
  • Slurred Speech
  • Trouble Eating And Swallowing
  • Eye Movement Abnormalities
  • Difficulty Walking
  • Gait Abnormalities
  • Tremors
  • Heart Problems

It is considered as Beej dosha disease. The protein frataxin is correlated with prana vata that controls the action of udana and in turn vyana vata is impaired and induced gati. Due to decreased pranayatna (action potential), less ATP production (urga karma) is there. This leads to decreased cellular metabolism (known as bala in ayurveda), due to which ama drvya is produced at the cellular levels. This ama leads to obstruction and iron alternation reacts with oxygen to produce free radicals (known as ama visha) and destroys cellular processes.
