Herbal Treatment for Detrusor Muscle Weakness ( Underactive Bladder )

Detrusor muscle weakness is a condition of an underactive bladder because of which the sufferers are not able to completely empty their bladder within a ‘normal’ time period. The individuals affected by this condition may either hesitate before the flow of the urine or may have to push urine out, with the result that the urine comes out in dribbles.

Detrusor muscle weakness is a result of an underactivity of the detrusor muscle, which is a smooth muscle found in the wall of the bladder. When this muscle functions properly, it remains relaxed in order to facilitate the storage of urine in the bladder, and it contracts during the process of urination in order to release urine.

An underactivity of the detrusor muscle can be explained as a voiding contraction of reduced strength and/or time period, because of which urination gets prolonged or the complete emptying of the bladder is prevented.

In other words, detrusor underactivity (or impaired contractility) is generally characterized by prolonged urination time with or without a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying; typically with hesitancy, reduced sensation on filling of urine in the bladder, and a slow stream of urine.

Patients affected by the 'underactive bladder' condition hardly feel the sensation of a full bladder, due to which the bladder holds unusually large amounts of urine. Since the detrusor muscle is underactive in this condition, the bladder is unable to contract the muscles in an adequate and forceful manner, which leads to incomplete emptying of the bladder.

Detrusor muscle weakness or underactive bladder usually affects people aged between 40 and 60 years.

Generally, some other health conditions are the main cause of Detrusor muscle weakness or underactive bladder. The health conditions which can lead to an underactive bladder mostly include:

  • Aging
  • Obstruction of bladder outlet
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Injury to the spinal cord, and pelvic plexus
  • AIDS
  • Acute cerebrovascular accidents

In addition, the risk of an underactive bladder is also fairly high in people affected by disorders of the central nervous system. These disorders include Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and traumatic brain injury.

Some of the common symptoms of Detrusor muscle weakness or underactive bladder are:

  • Urgency of urination
  • Frequency of urination
  • Hesitation before urine flows
  • Nocturia
  • Urge and/or stress to urinate
  • Incontinence
  • Sensation of incomplete emptying
  • Straining to empty the bladder
  • Frequent infections.

The intensity of the symptoms of the Detrusor muscle weakness may be different for different patients.

The treatment of Detrusor muscle weakness or underactive bladder mainly involves the use of different methods for easing the symptoms of this condition. These methods -- which can slow down the progression and potential damages of underactive bladder -- generally include the use of medications and catheters, which help the patients in emptying the bladder. In some cases, surgery may be required.
