Herbal Remedies for Guillain-Barre Syndrome

G B Syndrome is the abbreviated form of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. It is a rare disorder. The immune system of the body affects the nerves. If the G B Syndrome reaches its extreme point, it becomes an emergency.

The cause of this disorder is yet to be known. But, often flu or respiratory ailments may lead to G B Syndrome. However, there are certain treatments available. These can help one to get rid of the symptoms and cure the severity to a certain extent.

Some of the probable causes of the G B Syndrome are given here:

  • Influenza virus
  • HIV causing AIDS
  • Campylobacter infection, the bacteria in under cooked poultry
  • Mycoplasma pneumonia
  • Hodgkin's lymphoma
  • Epstein-Barr Virus
  • Surgery
  • Childhood vaccines - Though this is a rare cause. But it's a probable cause as well.

SYMPTOMS OF G B SYNDROME

Some major symptoms of G B Syndrome are discussed here in detail. The initial symptoms start with weakness and tingling sensation of the entire body. It starts in the feet and move to the arms. Also, many a time, the symptoms initiate in the face as well. This syndrome mostly starts by attacking the nerves of the human body. Thus, the movement of the individuals get affected to a huge extent. This results in weakness and numbness. As the disorder progresses, the patient may get paralysed as well. Patients suffering from Guillain Barre Syndrome start experiencing weakness in 2 to 4 weeks after symptoms initiate.

TYPES OF GUILLAIN BARRE SYNDROME

The major types of G B Syndrome are listed here under.

MFS or Miller Fisher Syndrome

This syndrome occurs in approximately 5% of patients suffering from G B Syndrome. It is common in Asia. During this syndrome, the most affected region is the eyes. Paralysis begins in eyes. It is also related to unsteady gait.

AIDP or Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy

This is the commonest form of G B Syndrome. The common symptom is muscular weakness. The lower portion of the body is mostly affected. And, the weakness starts spreading in the upward direction gradually.

AMAN or Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy

This is a type of G B Syndrome. It is characterized by reflex losses but no sensory loss at all. Acute paralysis is yet another symptoms of this type. It is also known as the Chinese Paralytic Syndrome.

AMSAN or Acute Motor Sensory Axonal Neuropathy

This is an axonal form of G B Syndrome. It is characterized by sensory deficits and muscular weakness. The recovery process is very poor. It is supposed to be a severe form of GBS.

Though, Guillain-Barre Syndrome affects individuals of different age groups. The ones, who are mostly affected are the older adults, especially men.

Some early symptoms, if become severe may enhance the chance of various long term serious complications. Patient may also die due to respiratory ailment or cardiac arrest as well.

Ayurvedic Concept of Guillain-Barre Syndrome

According to the Ayurvedic concept, the condition of G B Syndrome can be related to a vata complication, which affects each and every part of the human body. This is known as the Sarvangagatavatavyadhi. It is a disorder with lack of proper nourishment to the tissues of the body. It is known as apatarpana. This situation is often preceded by high grade fever, known as jvara.

The treatment that is applied to this situation is known as the nourishing treatment. According to Ayurveda, it's santarpana chikitsa. This, in common terms is known as Nourishing Treatment. Santarpana basically includes the following:

  • Bahyopakramas - This is known as Nourishing external treatment
  • Abhyanga - Also known as the Oleation Therapy
  • Sastikasalipindasveda - This is a process of sudation with the help of hot processed rice, known as the sastika rice.
  • Karmabasti - This is medicated enema
  • Sirodhara - The process of pouring medicated liquid on the forehead
  • Jvaragna Chikitsa - This is the treatment of fever
