Granulomatous Mastitis Treatment in Ayurveda

It is one of the rare disease which is similar to breast cancer. Most of the people are not aware about this disease. It is condition which is characterized by pain and inflammation of breast. It commonly occurs after 2-6 months of pregnancy. Here we will discuss about granulomatous mastitis causes, symptoms, diagnosis and Ayurvedic treatment.Ayurveda provides natural treatment for this disease without any side effects.

What is Granulomatous Mastitis (GM)?

It is a breast disorder in which breast gets inflamed and develops a tissue mass. This condition is similar to breast cancer and it is difficult to differentiate from breast cancer. It commonly occurs after 2-6 years of pregnancy. It may involve any part of breast. The lumps are mostly present in sub areolar region (area behind nipples) of breast. It is classified into two types:

  1. Idiopathic Granulomatous mastitis or granular lobular mastitis.
  2. Granulomatous mastitis

What can be the Causes of Granulomatous Mastitis?

It is an autoimmune disease and its exact cause is not known. The other causes may include:

  1. Blockage of milk duct - Milk duct may be blocked or clogged when breast is not completely empty after feeding that results in breast infection.
  2. Bacterial infection - It may be due to bacterial infection that may enter breast through baby’s mouth or through breast surface.
  3. Elevated prolactin level -

Symptoms Associated with Granulomatous Mastitis

This disease can be characterized by symptoms such as Lump formation in breasts, Inflammation of breasts, Fluid secretion from breasts, Pain, Fever, Warmth feeling in breast, Enlargement of lymph nodes.

Diagnosis of Granulomatous Mastitis

Mostly patients get confused GM with breast cancer. Only on the basis of symptoms it is difficult to diagnose the granulomatous mastitis. Doctors diagnose GM on the basis of physical examination and tests which are given below:

Physical examination includes diagnosis of symptoms such as fever, chills, pain and inflammation of breast.

Other Tests may include CT scan, X-Ray, and Ultrasound.

Core biopsy it is the main tests that helps to diagnose granulomatous mastitis. In which the piece of breast is taken as sample for analysis of GM.

Complications Associated with Granulomatous Mastitis

To prevent the complications consult a doctor as soon as possible. The long term blockage of duct results in complete blockage due to accumulation of pus and formation of breast mass or lump formation that may require surgery.

As per Ayurveda there are three energies (vata, pitta and kapha) in the body which are responsible for good health and imbalance of any three energies may results in health complications. According to Ayurveda, granulomatous mastitis is inflammation of breast which is mainly due to vitiation of tri doshas. Diseases related to breast have been categorized into eight types of stana roga as mentioned in Ayurvedic texts.

  • Bhibhitaki (Terminalia bellerica) - It has cleansing action. It has property to reduce cyst and swelling.

5. Jatyadi Oil or Mahamirchadhi Oil

Tips for Granulomatous Mastitis

  • Continue breast feed as often.
  • Avoid engorgement (overfilling of breast milk).

  • Change your breast feeding positions.
