What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a disorder in which thyroid gland is not able to produce the enough thyroid hormone. Thyroid gland is located in the lower part of neck and produces the two hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). Function of thyroid gland is to run the body's metabolism.

Decreased levels of thyroid hormones impair the body's ability to perform the metabolic functions, maintenance of healthy cells, bones, muscles and regulation of chemical reactions in the body.

How This Hypothyroidism Develop?

1. Autoimmune Disease - Autoimmune disease occurs when antibodies produced by our immune system, start attacking its own tissues. So these antibodies also disturb the functioning of thyroid gland to produce hormones.

2. Iodine defeciency - Iodine is necessary for thyroid hormone production. As our body can't produce iodine on its own so too little consumption of iodine in our diet leads to hypothyroidism.

3. Thyroid Surgery - Surgical removal of thyroid gland result in the hypothyroidism. In this case, one needs to take the thyroid hormone throughout life.

4. Radiation Therapy - Radiation therapy done in the neck area for the treatment of certain type of cancers of head and neck. Radiations cause the destruction of cells and create the difficulty in thyroid hormone production.

5. Medications - Use of certain medications such as amiodarone (Cordarone) and lithium which are used for the treatment of psychiatric disorders and heart diseases also lead to hypothyroidism.

6. Congenital Disease - Some babies are born with the improper development of thyroid gland. This type of hypothyroidism is called as congenital hypothyroidism.

7. Pituitary Disorders - Problems with pituitary glands may interfere with the production of thyroid hormone.

Ayurvedic View

As in Ayurveda there is no proper description of hypothyroidism. But a similar disease by the name of galaganda is described in Ayurveda. In galaganda the swelling of neck occurs whereas hypothyroidism is not a localized disease which affects the various parts of body.
