Hypercoagulability & Its Ayurvedic Treatment With Herbal Remedies

ABSTRACT

A normal response to bleeding from any part of the body surface involves the formation of a stable clot (coagulation) for maintaining homeostasis. The exaggerated coagulation process that involves clots formation inside the body, within blood vessels without any bleeding is termed ad Hypercoagulability. Various hypercoagulable states and thrombophilic diseases cause Hypercoagulability. The prevalence of this disease is 1 per 1 lakh children born. In this article, we will discuss the causes and many symptoms of Hypercoagulability along with the treatment of Hypercoagulability in Ayurveda.

INTRODUCTION

Hypercoagulability is an increased tendency to develop thrombosis (Blood clots) in the body. Hypercoagulability is also termed thrombophilia. Up to 5% of strokes are due to Hypercoagulability disorders. Hypercoagulation can include various disorders due to excess clotting factors. Some of those disorders include the following-

Antithrombin 3, Protein C deficiency, hyperhomocysteinemia, dysfibrinolysis, elevated factor 8, antiphospholipid syndrome, sticky platelet syndrome, malignancy, heparin induced thrombocytopenia and many more disorders.

Thrombophilia needs to be diagnosed as early as possible to prevent ischemic strokes, myocardial infarction, thrombosis, etc.

The first type of Hypercoagulability occurs due to inherited mutated genes that hurdle the normal clotting mechanism of the body. The second type of Hypercoagulability occurs due to acquired habits that include drug abuse, alcohol intake, smoking, and some diseases such as autoimmune diseases, inflammatory disorders, etc. Hypercoagulability triggers in pregnancy due to frequent fluctuations in hormone levels. Hypercoagulability increases the risk of coronary heart disease and insulin resistance.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT

Hypercoagulability can be correlated to Sira granthi (thrombosis) and Vatharaktham. These disorders occur due to an imbalance of tridosha and the aggravation of Pittaj and Raktaj Doshas. These doshas aggravate due to improper intake of diet and living a sedentary lifestyle. Balancing the tridosha with ayurvedic herbal medications can restore the dosha imbalance and recover the general health of the person. The prescribed medications are described in detail further in the article.

CAUSES

Hypercoagulability could be acquired as well as an inherited disorder. More causes could be any of the following-

  • Genetic factors
  • Environmental factors
  • Heterogeneous family of immunoglobulins that bind to plasma protein
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Inflammatory disorders
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Post-surgery
  • Sedentary lifestyle

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms vary according to the presence of clots in the area of a particular organ's blood vessels. The clots in the heart may cause heart failure and associated symptoms could be-

  • Chest pain
  • Short of breathless
  • Discomfort in arms, back, neck, and chest region.

The clot in the kidney may cause-

  • kidney failure
  • Pain in the groin region
  • Swelling
  • Blood and changes in urination

The clot in the brain may cause brain stroke with associated symptoms-

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Paralysis (half or full body)
  • Speech changes

The symptoms vary according to the presence of clots in body organs, heart, kidney, lungs, brain, liver, and so on.

DIAGNOSIS

Various diagnostic methods used in the diagnosis of Hypercoagulability are-

  • Family history
  • Demographics
  • Physical examination
  • ELISA test
  • CT scan
  • Endoscopy
  • Papanicolaou smear
  • Blood tests

TREATMENT

Treatment in allopathy includes the following modalities-

  • Antithrombotic treatment
  • Fresh frozen plasma
  • Anticoagulants
  • Surgery

The patient is advised to stop drug abuse and alcohol consumption. Symptomatic treatment is given to reduce pain and discomfort in the patients. The treatment is done to suppress the symptoms and not to cure the root cause of the disease. Whereas, Ayurveda provides safe treatment of Hypercoagulability by eradicating the root cause of the disease.
