Treatment of Fungal Infections in Ayurveda

ABSTRACT

There are millions of fungi species on earth, those live on trees, plants, house belongings, dirt, floor surface, unhygienic food, and on the skin surface. Thus fungal infections are much more common throughout the world. Today over 300 million people around the world are affected by Fungal Infections. Fungal infections can also spread through sharing of towels, clothes, and other belongings of an infected person. In this article, we will find out the causes of fungal infections and who is more prone to have these infections. Also, we will know the management modalities of Fungal Infections in Ayurveda.

Fungal Infection

INTRODUCTION

Fungal Infection is an inflammatory condition that is caused by a fungus. It is also known as Mycosis. Fungal infections not only affect the skin but also weakens our immune system. The most affected areas include feet, groin region, folds of skin, and scalp. When infection is mild it will show superficial symptoms (skin infection) but in chronic cases, it might affect other internal organs too by invading tissues, bones, and organs. Fungi can live anywhere but the most favorable environment for their growth of fungi in a warm and humid area, such as in shoes, socks, swimming pools, bathroom showers, bathtubs, public toilets, locked rooms, sweaty bed sheets in hotel rooms, public pools, ponds, etc places. The most common fungal infections found are-

  • Yeast infection
  • Athlete's foot
  • Ringworm
  • Jock itch

The most common among these is the Athlete's foot. The symptoms vary from person to person but include itching, redness, and burning sensations in affected feet.

AYURVEDIC ASPECT

In Ayurveda skin diseases are known as 'Kushth Roga'. In the sub-classification of Kushth Rogas, we can correlate fungal infections, particularly to "Dadru". An imbalance of tridoshas is the main cause of these infections along with unhealthy and unhygienic practices in daily routine. Ayurvedic treatment is followed for relief that includes panchkarma therapies, dietary modification, and the local application of naturally medicated oils with oral herbal medications.

Dosage - Drink 10-20 ml of kwath twice daily by mixing in water.

4. Vran Rakshak Oil

This is a medicated oil for external use only. Oil is indicated to be applied on the skin surface area that is affected by fungus. The oil consists of Shudh parad (Purified mercury), Shuddha Gandhak (Purified sulphur), Shudh Manshila (Purified realgar), Tamra Bhasma (Calcined copper), Rasona (Allium sativum), etc. The oil is prescribed for various skin-related diseases and has wonderful results. Dosage - Local application of oil at the site of infection twice daily. (oil is for external use only).
