Ayurvedic Treatment for Achalasia - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Herbal Remedies

ACHALASIA

Achalasia is a rare disorder of that affects digestion. In this disease, there is a difficulty in passing food and liquid into the stomach. It occurs when nerves in the tube connecting the mouth and stomach become damaged. Due to this, oesophagus loses its ability to squeeze the food down and the muscular valve between oesophagus and stomach does not get fully relaxed. Therefore, food cannot pass into the stomach easily.

It is an oesophageal motor disorder characterised by sustained lower oesophageal sphincter contraction and reduced oesophageal peristalsis. It is considered as an incurable condition.

It can happen because of different reasons. Some of the causes are hereditary, auto-immune disorder. In auto-immune disorder, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the healthy cells in the body. The degeneration of nerves in the oesophagus often contributes to the symptoms of achalasia.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ACHALASIA?

  • Dysphagia: The most common symptom of achalasia is dysphagia which means difficulty in swallowing or feel like if the food is stuck in the oesophagus. This symptom can also cause coughing and there is a risk of aspiration or inhaling or choking of food.
  • Discomfort or pain in the chest.
  • Weight loss
  • Heartburn
  • Difficulty in eating or intense pain.
  • Regurgitation or backflow

DIAGNOSIS

This disease is often overlooked or misdiagnosed because it has the symptoms similar to the digestive disorders.

  • The doctor may diagnose achalasia if the patient complains of trouble in swallowing both solid and liquid food and particularly if it gets worse over time.
  • An X-ray of oesophagus is also useful in diagnosing the condition.
  • Endoscopy is also performed. In this procedure, the doctor will insert a tube with a small camera on the end into the oesophagus.

TREATMENT

Treatment mainly focuses on relaxing the lower oesophageal sphincter so that the food and liquid can move easily through the digestive tract. Modern treatment includes non-surgical treatment as well as surgical methods. Surgery may be recommended for younger people but there are certain side effects of both surgical and non-surgical treatments.

But the science of Ayurveda gives an opportunity to the patients to look into the pragmatic ease and effectiveness of Ayurvedic therapeutics in an entirely new dimension.

Ayurveda believes in considering the basic doshas responsible for the symptom. Thus, Ayurveda offers a dependable remedy in such cases where the clinical symptoms are suggestive for achalasia and where the conventional allopathic therapy is not offering any sustainable benefit.

Ayurvedic Treatment For Cholera

Cholera

Cholera is an acute infectious water born disease of small intestine caused by bacteria Vibrio cholerae causing severe watery diarrhea leading to dehydration. It may be accompanied by vomiting and muscle cramps. It takes 1 to 5 days for symptoms to appear. Symptoms vary from none, mild to severe. Cholera can be life threatening as it may lead to death within hours if left untreated.

The disease is more prevalent in places with poor sanitation, crowding, war, and famine. In Ayurveda Cholera is known by the name 'Visuchika'.

Causes of Cholera

It is caused by bacterium Vibrio cholerae, is usually found in food or water contaminated by feces from a person with the infection.

Transmission is usually through the fecal-oral route of contaminated food or water caused by poor sanitation.

Sources of contamination are:

Vegetables and fruits grown in water contaminated with human wastes.

Raw or undercooked fish and seafood in waters polluted with sewage.

When cholera bacteria is ingested by humans, they may not get infected, but they still pass the bacteria in their stool. When human feces contaminate food or water supplies, both can serve as ideal breeding grounds for the cholera bacteria.

Ayurvedic view for the cause of Cholera

As said by Ayurveda, weak gastric fire, impure water, improper food, toxins and mental stress usually cause Atisaar. Aggravated vata brings the fluid part down from various tissues of the body and then into the intestine, this fluid mixes with the stool which then results in loose, watery motions.

Symptoms of Cholera

Symptoms appear within few hours to five days after getting infected.

  • Primary symptoms are profuse diarrhea and vomiting of clear fluid leading to dehydration.
  • Rice water diarrhea' i.e. stools resembling rice water. Stools contain mucus, epithelial cells and large number of cholera bacteria.
  • Dehydration causes dryness of mucous membranes, involving the inside of the mouth, throat, nose, and eyelids.
  • Feeling of restlessness and thirst.
  • Muscle cramps
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Skin becomes wrinkled and pale clammy.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Electrolyte imbalance.
  • Anuria may also be there.
  • Even circulatory collapse also occurs.

Preventions

  • Make sure of only drinking clean water that includes bottled water or boiled water or chemically disinfected.
  • Even for brushing teeth, preparing food or drinks, making ice, washing face and hands, dish washing and utensils that you use to eat or prepare food, and even for washing fruits and vegetables clean water should be used.
  • Always eat food which is completely cooked and hot and if possible try to avoid food sold by street vendor.
  • Washing hands with soap and water frequently. Stick to fruits and vegetables that you can peel yourself,
  • Proper sterilization is essential which can be done by complete and managed disposal and treatment of infected fecal waste water produced by cholera victims and all contaminated materials (e.g. clothing, bedding, etc.)
  • Warnings should be posted around contaminated water sources, in case there is possibility of cholera contamination, with directions on how to decontaminate the water (boiling, chlorination etc.) for possible use.
