Natural Treatment for Gustatory Rhinitis

Rhinitis is one of the diseases that is characterized by inflammation of the lining of Nasal Cavity. This condition can be allergic, Non-allergic or infectious. The main reason for allergic rhinitis is when any person ingest allergen into their respiratory tract. This type of rhinitis can be seasonal which can affect a person seasonally, at certain times of the year or may be perennial which affects a person throughout the year. This specific type of Rhinitis affects forty to sixty million of Americans as per American College of Allergy, Asthma and immunology. The other type is non-allergic rhinitis that is caused by specific triggers and affects a person for a short period of time. In this article we are going to discuss one type of Non-allergic Rhinitis that is Gustatory Rhinitis, along with its Ayurvedic view. So let’s have a look!!!!!

Gustatory Rhinitis is a condition characterized by rhinorrhea that is watery, unilateral or bilateral. This generally occurs after eating liquid or solid foods, most commonly spicy and hot. It starts within a few minutes after eating implicated food. This condition is not associated with sneezing, pruritus, facial pain or nasal congestion. This is considered a non-immunological reaction; various investigations show that the condition is generally caused with stimulation of endings of trigeminal sensory nerves that are located at the aerodigestive tract (upper side). This is some brief introduction about Gustatory Rhinitis, let’s see further what are causes and symptoms of this condition.

Gustatory Rhinitis, Runny Nose While Eating

  • Gustatory Rhinitis is one of the types of Non-allergic Rhinitis.
  • Prevalence of Non-allergic Rhinitis is noticed as 1/3rd of Allergic Rhinitis.
  • The diagnosis of Gustatory Rhinitis totally depends upon clinical examination.
  • The treatment varies from person to person on the basis of different pathophysiologies.

In case of Gustatory rhinitis, a particular food item plays a role of the irritant, sometimes any food item can be considered as the irritant. Generally the following spicy foods are involved:

  • Black pepper
  • Hot Sauce
  • Curry
  • Chilli Powder
  • Onions
  • Hot Peppers
  • Horseradish

These are some common triggers of gustatory Rhinitis but different people may have different triggers for Gustatory Rhinitis.

There are only few symptoms of gustatory rhinitis, which includes the following:

  • Stuffy Nose
  • Sneezing
  • Runny Nose
  • Postnasal Drip

Symptoms usually seem to be present all around the year but can be worsened with weather changes but this condition can not be seen before adulthood.

The doctor will first of all diagnose the symptoms of non allergic rhinitis that are based on various causes and allergens. This can be diagnosed with step by step examination. First of all the doctor asks a few questions regarding your symptoms and does a physical examination. Then he will recommend some tests for non-allergic rhinitis. If you have nasal congestion, postnasal drip, or a runny nose, your doctor will make sure that you have non-allergic rhinitis. After this the Doctor will refer you for various allergies and tests for sinus problems, to identify underlying causes. For ruling out allergies two types of tests are to be done which includes Skin test and blood test. The Sinus problem can be identified with tests such as Nasal Endoscopy, CT Scan and X-Ray.

Ayurveda is a Holistic science which is based on three dosha, Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Balance of all three doshas is considered as good health. Ayurveda sees a disease in a different kind of view and the line of treatment of diseases is also totally different. As per Ayurvedic view this condition can be considered as compromised immune system that is low Oja dhatu (quantum of immunity) and aggravation of pitta dosha. Other than this there are various agantuk karana (external factors) that play a great role in triggering the Gustatory Rhinitis. Ayurveda believe that the root cause of every disease is improper agni or digestive fire and the same happens in this case also.

Treatment protocol of Ayurveda started with mild digestion and to promote the digestive fire. After this elimination of aggravated doshas is to be done by giving herbs that promote detoxification. Generally in case of Gastritis mild purgation is to be done for balancing pitta dosha and the next step is to boost up the immune system with various rejuvenating herbs such as Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), haritaki (Terminalia chebula), etc.
