Sticky Skin Syndrome And Its Ayurvedic Management

ABSTRACT

Skin in the largest organ of the human body. Sticky skin syndrome is a dermatological occurrence when the skin causes some objects or things to stick/adhere to it on touch or stick to itself or both. It is also called clammy skin. This sticky or clammy skin can be due to various issues. Sticky or clammy skin is the result of excessive sweating. There are a variety of  healthy conditions that can lead to sticky skin syndrome. In the following text we shall discuss the sticky skin syndrome in little detail and its management in Ayurveda. Let's have a look!!

Sticky Skin Syndrome, Clammy Skin

INTRODUCTION

Sticky skin can manifest as a lone or with addition to hyperhidrosis. Skin is one of the sensing organs whose basic element is vayu and senses touch. There are a number of skin disorders from which humans suffer. Skin is the reflection of the health condition of a person. Sticky cell syndrome is one of the dermatological disorders. That needs to be corrected or treated. Usually there are many causes that lead to sticky skin. Therefore, it is mandatory to rule out such disorders and treat them on a priority basis. In Ayurveda, skin is said to be a seat of brajhaka pitta. Thus most of the skin disorders’ root cause is pitta vitiation. As pitta dosha vitiates, it enhances warmness thus causing sweating which results in sticky skin.

AETIOLOGY OR CAUSES OF STICKY SKIN

  • Heart conditions like heart attack, cardiomyopathy, heart failure, endocarditis, hypertension, palpitations, and arrhythmia can lead to sweating.
  • Shock conditions  like low blood volume (hypovolemic shock), allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock), sepsis (septic shock), nerve damage (neurogenic shock) can lead to excessive sweating.
  • Low oxygen levels as in case of hypoxia which can have various reasons from a blocked artery to certain medications.
  • Internal bleeding can cause sweating as a result of hypovolemic shock.
  • When the external temperature exceeds much more than the bodily temperature, excessive sweating occurs.
  • Venomous bites insects and animals can lead to excessive sweating and cause clammy skin.
  • Panic attacks result in clammy and sticky skin.
  • Hypoglycemia that is low blood glucose level in the body can result in clammy and moist skin.
  • Sudden alcohol withdrawal can also result in  clammy skin.
  • Hyperactive or overactive thyroid, hyperthyroidism is another cause of excessive sweating and sticky skin.
  • There is a medical condition in which a patient acquires medication-induced sticky skin (MISS) with proton pump inhibitors, retinoids and antifungals.
  • Age related sticky skin.
  • Menopause.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Underlying medical conditions and its associated symptoms may manifest
  • Dizziness is an obvious feature
  • Excessive sweating will lead to stickiness
  • Objects sticking to the skin
  • Irritability is a psychological symptom associated
  • Confusion
  • Moist and clammy skin
  • Lightheadedness
  • Nausea
  • Heart palpitations due to increased warmness

MANAGEMENT

  • Rehydrating therapy through intravenous flow
  • Hormonal therapy in hormonal imbalance
  • Anti histamines in the allergic reactions
  • Antidepressants
  • Botox injections can be administered
  • Antiperspirant creams
  • Nerve blocking medications

PROCEDURES THAT CAN BE PERFORMED ARE FOLLOWING

  • Removal of sweat glands.
  • Iontophoresis is a procedure done with passing an electric current through water to temporarily inactive the sweat glands.
  • Nerve surgery is the last on the list if other things don't work.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES REQUIRED

  • Use of clothes that are made up of natural material.
  • Bathing daily and using antiperspirant is helpful.
  • Wearing of the clothes according to the activity.
  • Relaxation techniques to relieve sweating due to stress.

PRODUCT EXPLANATION

1. Neem Capsules

Neem Capsules contain the herb neem (Azadirachta indica). It is a herb used in various skin conditions as it cleanses the blood as well as skin. In addition to this it soothes and cools the skin. Therefore, it is beneficial in sticky skin syndrome.

Dosage - One capsule twice a day after meals with plain water.

2. Gandhak Rasayan

It is a mineral based rasayana. It contains shuddha gandhak (purified sulphur). Furthermore, sulphur has many health benefits. It nourishes the body from inside out. It possesses antimicrobial, antibacterial and antiviral activities. It enhances skin complexion and controls excessive sweating. It makes skin beautiful and healthy. Therefore it is useful in Sticky Skin Syndrome.

Dosage - 2 tablets twice a day after meals with plain water.

3. Mahamanjisthaghan Vati

Mahamanjisthaghan Vati contains the kwath ghan of Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia). Manjistha is known to be a miraculous herb for skin related disorders. Thus it is beneficial in Stick Skin Syndrome.

Dosage - 2 tablets twice a day after meals with plain water.

4. Pitta Balance

It is a formulation derived from JaharMohra, Kharawa, Akik, Mukta, Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia)Satva. All these ingredients pacify pitta. Therefore, as the name of the formulation suggests it balances the pitta dosha. As we have discussed above, sticky skin syndrome is due to an imbalance of pitta dosha. Hence it is advantageous in the aforesaid syndrome.

Dosage - One capsule twice a day after meals with plain water.

5. Neem Oil

It is oil prepared by using neem (Azadirachta indica) leaves. It has a cooling effect and is beneficial in skin disorders. According to Ayurveda it is a drug of choice in leprosy.

Uses/Dosage : For local application.

6. Manjisthadi Oil

It is an ayurvedic oil prepared by various herbs. It balances vata and pitta. It contains goodness of musta (Cyperus rotundus), jatiphal (Myristica rotundus), bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), amalaki (Emblica officinalis), jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), tagara (Valeriana wallichi), kushta (Saussiurea lappa), ela (Elettaria cardamomum) and many other herbs. It is used for local applications. It enhances skin wellness. This is beneficial in Sticky Skin Syndrome.

7. Tea Tree-Aloe Vera Premium Handmade Bathing Bar

As we have discussed, Sticky Skin Syndrome is a condition when objects stick to the skin. And that has various reasons for the same. Therefore there are many management protocols that are postulated.
