Hyphema - How it can be treated in Ayurveda?

Due to injury or trauma bleeding occurs in the anterior chamber of the eye between the cornea and the iris. This condition is known as Hyphema. Normally eyes contain clear liquid (Aqueous humor) and in the posterior part of the eye is known as ciliary processes. In this article, we are going to discuss hyphema and its ayurvedic treatment.

Hyphema is a painful condition and if left untreated for a longer duration then it may lead to complete loss of vision. This condition is the collection of Red Blood cells inside the anterior chamber of the eye. In some conditions, blood may cover most parts of the eye such as the iris and the pupil. So it hampered vision completely or partially. It may be due to any trauma and Hyphema is going along with increased intraocular pressure. Many people recover from hyphema through home remedies or through prevention in certain time periods. In Ayurveda, there is no such correlation but it can be correlated with Raktaj and Kaphaj vikar. When the Rakt dosha is aggravated along with Kapha then in the Shukla part (sclera) of the eye becomes a reddish appearance of the eye.

The following sign and symptoms of Hyphema are,

  1. Reddish eye.
  2. Blurred or distorted vision in the affected eye.
  3. Sensitivity to light.
  4. Accumulation of blood cells in the anterior chamber of the eye.
  5. Severe pain in the associated eye.

The following GRADES OF HYPHEMA are,

  • Grade 0:- In this grade, there is no visible layering seen within the anterior chamber.
  • Grade 1:- In grade 1 there is small layered blood occupying less than one-third of the anterior chamber of the eye.
  • Grade 2:- In this stage blood filling in the anterior chamber increased to half.
  • Grade 3:- In this stage slightly less blood fills than a total of the anterior chamber.
  • Grade 4:- In this stage blood completely filled in the anterior chamber.

The following causes of Hyphema are,

  • Most of the cases are sports injuries (Baseball, Basketball, cricket, paintball, softball, etc).
  • Sometimes car accidents may cause Hyphema because of the lack of airbags in them.
  • Medical conditions such as hemophilia, sickle cell disease, diabetes, leukemia, and Von Willebrand disease are the major regions of Hyphema.
  • People who are taking Anticoagulants (Blood thinning medications) may also get hyphema.
  • Surgery of the eye may lead to Hyphema such as artificial lens implants.
  • An infectious condition such as the herpes virus may lead to Hyphema
  • Cancerous of the eye.
  • Inflammatory conditions such as Uveitis of the eye components.

The following diagnostic method for Hyphema is,

  • Slit lamp examination is used to diagnose any eye disorder
  • Tonometry is used to check the intraocular pressure (IOP).
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG).
  • CT scan helps if the injury is severe or checks for any fracture associated with the eye socket.
