Herbal Remedies for Arteriovenous Malformation

Artery is a blood vessel that helps in taking away blood from the heart and supplying it to other parts of the body including brain, lung, heart, tissue etc. Most of the artery carries oxygen rich blood except the two arteries including umbilical and pulmonary artery. These arteries are responsible for carrying deoxygenated blood. Arteries are a part of our circulatory system and are one of the important parts of our body.

Veins are also blood vessels that are important for carrying blood to the heart. Most of the Veins present in the body carry deoxygenated blood except the pulmonary and umbilical veins that carry oxygenated blood. Veins are more muscular as compared to arteries and also closer to our skin. Both the arteries and veins are important for maintaining the flow of blood but when these blood vessels are affected result in a condition known as Arteriovenous malformation. Through this article we are going to discuss Arteriovenous Malformation in detail along with its Herbal remedies.

WHAT IS ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION?

AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation) is an abnormal connection made between the veins and arteries and is also known for causing a fault in blood vessels of the respiratory or cardiac system. It is important to remember that it's made from two words where arteriovenous represents the channels between veins and arteries whereas malformation means abnormality present in any part of the body.

Arteriovenous Malformation, Herbal Remedies, Ayurveda, Treatment

As we have discussed, arteries help in carrying oxygenated blood from the heart to the brain, and veins are responsible for carrying oxygen from the brain and sending it back to the heart. While in patients with Arteriovenous Malformation a cluster is formed in the blood vessels and the tissues are not able to get enough oxygen. These tangled blood vessels can rupture if not treated and this may cause brain damage or stroke. AVM is not a hereditary disorder and is rarely passed from one family member to another.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?

The symptoms of patients with Arteriovenous Malformation may differ from patient to patient depending on the affected part of the body. AVM can occur anywhere in the body but mostly affected body parts are the spinal cord and brain.

Symptoms seen when affecting Chest, Abdomen and other organs:-

  • Pain in abdomen
  • Backache
  • Pain in chest
  • Difficulty in breathing

AVM in Brain signs:-

  • Severe headache or only one area is affected
  • Seizure
  • Weakness of muscles
  • Numbness of different body parts
  • Confused
  • Tingling sensation in any part of the body

When affecting Limbs or Spinal cord:-

  • Muscle weakness
  • Not able to move the limbs
  • Movement coordination is difficult.
  • Poor coordination

Symptoms seen in Children:-

  • Recurrent Seizures
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Congestive heart failure

COMPLICATIONS

  • Brain hemorrhage:- The Arteriovenous Malformation is responsible for causing pressure on the walls of the veins and arteries. The pressure may cause rupturing leading to bleeding inside the brain.
  • Thinning of Blood vessels:- The extreme pressure on the blood vessel makes the walls thin and weak and these lumps present on blood vessels are vulnerable of rupturing.
  • The Supply of oxygen is reduced to the brain tissue because of Arteriovenous Malformation.
  • At the end it may result in Brain damage.

WHAT CAUSES ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION?

The cause for AVM is still not known but researchers believe that most of the brain AVMs are caused during the fetal development. There are few risk factors like:- Males are mostly affected with AVM as compared to females.

It has also been reported that there are certain genetic factors causing AVM but there are possible chances that it can be inherited.

HOW ARTERIOVENOUS MALFORMATION CAN BE DIAGNOSED?

There are various test that can be done and this includes:-

  • CT-Scan
  • MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiogram)
  • Angiography
  • MRI
