We all need to support them and make them feel comfortable in the society to let them live with this disease in a better way. As per some studies, around one third of the people suffering from Scheuermann also have moderate scoliosis.1 Also, the Scheuermann's Disease mostly gets diagnosed lately due to the similar symptoms of Bad Posture. So, being the ancient and most effective science of treatment, the natural herbs also have the potency to help people suffering from Kyphosis. Let us know about them and effective remedies with which we can help Kyphosis patients to live a better life.

INTRODUCTION TO SCHEUERMANN'S DISEASE

Scheuermann's Kyphosis starts to disturb the life of the affected individual's right from their growing years during childhood. In this health problem, the front parts of the vertebrae grow slower than the back parts. Vertebrae are the small bones that together make up the spine. Normally, the vertebrae grow in a rectangular form but in Kyphosis, this growth takes the shape of a wedge / spike. The normal curve of the thoracic spine is 20 to 40 degrees, but in the situation of Scheuermann's Kyphosis, this curve is more than 40 to 45 degrees, that is considered as abnormal spine. This wedge shaped growth of the vertebrae consequently loses the actual and natural look of the spine and becomes a forward bend. This bend is known as Kyphosis. This disease gives an appearance of a hump on the back of the affected person, and their heads look like resting on their chest.

CAUSES OF SCHEUERMANN'S KYPHOSIS

The cause of Scheuermann's Kyphosis is not known till the time but some clinical studies and researches show that there may be a number of factors which can be responsible for the problem. Also, Scheuermann's Kyphosis generally is found as a genetic disorder. Additionally, occupations that demands staying in bending position for a longer period of time such as agricultural works, etc. and the bad postures contribute towards worsening of the Scheuermann's Kyphosis.2

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SCHEUERMANN'S KYPHOSIS

The Visible symptom of Kyphosis is the bend of the spine and the most experienced symptom is back pain, especially during the teen and adolescent age. Other than the back pain, other symptoms at different stages of Kyphosis are:

  • Tightening of Chest Muscles (pectoral muscles), Hamstrings (strong tissue bands at the thighs’ back) and Hip Flexors (inner hip muscles).
  • The curve may or may not grow bigger with the age.
  • The curve may continue to grow even after the growth of the affected individual stops, ultimately leading to larger curve and severe back pain.
  • The Scheuermann’s Kyphosis may be associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoporosis, or Healed Vertebrae fractures.

COMPLICATIONS OF SCHEUERMANN'S KYPHOSIS

If not treated or taken care on time, then the Scheuermann's Kyphosis and its symptoms worsen the physical as well as mental and emotional health of a person. Moreover, the progression in the curve may lead to different heart and lung (cardiopulmonary) and neurological (nervous system) disorders.
