Herbal Remedies for Hemihypertrophy in Children

Hemihypertrophy is the medical term used for a rare 'overgrowth' disorder which is characterized by growth differences (asymmetry) in the two sides of the body. In this condition, one side of the body – or a particular part of one side of the body – grows more as compared to the other side. The asymmetric growth marking this condition can range from mild to severe. Hemihypertrophy can be managed in a natural manner with the help of some beneficial herbal products offered by Planet Ayurveda herbal manufacturing company.

Hemihypertrophy in Children

HEMIHYPERTROPHY : OVERVIEW

Hemihypertrophy is a genetic overgrowth condition which is also called Hemihyperplasia or Overgrowth syndrome. The condition is marked by 'greater than normal variation' in the size of the two sides of the body. The size variation causes asymmetry between the two sides of the body because one side grows or enlarges abnormally due to an excessive production of cells.

Since Hemihypertrophy is a genetic disorder, the overgrowth of one side of the body is usually evident at birth. However, in some cases, the overgrowth becomes apparent in the affected children a few years after birth. The overgrowth may affect only one part of the body, or involve different areas of the body.

The body parts which are generally affected in this overgrowth disorder are the arms (upper extremities), the legs (lower extremities), the tongue, and the facial features.

Hemihypertrophy can either be an 'isolated' condition which occurs by itself, or it may be a characteristic feature of some other genetic disorders, such as Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome and Russell-Silver syndrome.

HEMIHYPERTROPHY : CAUSES

The exact cause behind the occurrence of Hemihypertrophy is not clearly known. Nonetheless, it is believed that the disorder has a 'genetic' connection --- it seemingly runs in families. More specifically, a mutation on chromosome 11 is linked to the disorder in a number of affected children.

HEMIHYPERTROPHY : SYMPTOMS

Some of the symptoms or features of Hemihypertrophy are:

  • Differential growth between the two sides of the body
  • Uneven length or circumference of one arm/leg
  • Large tongue (Macroglossia) which results in feeding and speech problems
  • Large abdominal organs – including the liver, kidney, adrenal glands, and pancreas – on one side of the body
  • Increased risk for certain tumors, including tumor of the liver (Hepatoblastoma), tumor of the muscle (Leiomyosarcoma), tumor of the adrenal gland (Adrenocortical carcinoma), Wilm’s tumor, and some other rare tumors.

HEMIHYPERTROPHY : TREATMENT

There is no specific treatment for Hemihypertrophy. In most cases, the treatment is aimed at managing the abnormal or overgrowth on side/part of the body. The treatment options for Hemihypertrophy patients include the use of corrective shoes, as well as orthopedic treatment, and surgical procedures like Epiphysiodesis for stopping or slowing down the growth of the enlarged limb. Moreover, the children affected by Hemihypertrophy are also screened for tumor growth, so that the tumors can be treated timely.

Depending on the symptoms of Hemihypertrophy, the patients may need specialized care from several doctors, such as genetic specialists, pediatric oncologists, orthopedic specialists, surgeons, kidney doctors, dental specialists, and speech specialists.

Hemihypertrophy can also be managed naturally with the help of herbal products prepared from pure and standardized herbs, in accordance with the ancient Ayurvedic guidelines. Some beneficial herbal products offered by Planet Ayurveda for natural management of Hemihypertrophy are:

Bala Ashwagandha oil is prepared from a combination of some potent herbs which are blended together with Sesame oil (Sesamum indicum). The herbs include Bala (Sida cordifolia), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Laksha (Lacifer lacca), Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia), Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Chandana (Pterocarpus santalinus), Madhuka (Glycyrrhiza glabra), Durva (Cynodon dactylon), Sariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Jalada (Cyperus rotundus), Kaunti (Vitex agnus), Kushta (Saussurea lappa), and Padmakesara (Nelumbium speciosum).
