Today, we are going to discuss a health ailment which is very common for those who are standing long hours like cops, teaching staff, security guards, sales man, etc and the disease is known as CVI (Chronic Venous Insufficiency). This disease occurs due to defects of the valves of veins. However there are various other factors which are responsible for this. So, in this article we are going to discuss about the cause, symptoms and its treatment with safe herbal medications.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition when the deoxygenated blood from the veins of legs is unable to return back to the heart due to improper work by the valves present in the veins. This makes the blood stagnant in the lower limbs and makes the veins protruded, swollen and develop inability to contract the calf muscles hence hampers the routine works.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency

The incidence ratio is quite high in the United States and more frequently occurs in the people with the age above 50's. Even the incidence ratio is quite high in those who are standing for prolonged duration and females are more affected than males.

As per Ayurveda, this condition can be correlated as Siraj granthi. Where the Siras are called as Veins and they get enlarged and tortuous so that they are unable to return the deoxygenated blood back to the heart. This is a Pitta pradhana tridoshaj vyadhi where Pitta is the main vitiated factor that further accompanies the Vata and Kapha dosha.

The most common causes of this disease are as follows but then also sometimes the causes of occurrence are unable to rule out.

  • The prime cause of the disease is any kind of damage to the valves. These valves are responsible to return and maintain the black flow of blood in the veins.
  • It is very common in diseases like DVT (Deep Venous thrombosis) where due to blood clot the blood stasis occurs in the lower limbs. That’s why it is also considered a Post thrombotic syndrome which occurred as a result of DVT.
  • Weakened veins.
  • Elevated blood pressure.
  • Any defect related to muscles, especially any disease which reduces the mobility or functions of muscles.
  • Hereditary factors – Family history of this disease is also a cause.
  • Diet factors – Excessive intake of abhishyandi foods which obstructs the channels.
  • Congenital malformations.

  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Drinking
  • Smoking
  • Old Age
  • Occupation especially which are related to long standing works.

This disease can be presented with the following sign and symptoms:

Swelling, it usually increases after long standing.

  • Prominent veins or varicose veins as they are filled with blood.
  • Itching on the lower limbs.
  • Tiredness, huge pain on touch.
  • Weakness.
  • Inability to move.
  • Cramps in the legs.
  • Tightness or rigidity in lower legs.
  • Heaviness in the lower limbs.
  • Numbness in the lower limbs

To evaluate CVI complete check up is required to rule out the disease as well as cause. Usually, you are asked for

  • Venogram
  • Duplex ultrasound
  • CT Venography
  • Capillaroscopy
  • Biopsy
  • Hematological investigations

As per Modern science, treatment of this disease can be done by giving Anticoagulants, analgesics, diuretics and medicines to improve blood flow along with compression with stockings, which most of the time may not be fruitful for most of the individuals and are not long lasting.
