Ayurvedic Treatment of Coagulopathy - Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Diet & Herbal Remedies

coagulopathy, coagulation disorders, bleeding disorder

Coagulation disorders also called bleeding disorder, are disturbances in the body’s ability to control blood clotting. Coagulation disorders are either a hemorrhage (i.e. Too little clotting that will increase a risk of bleeding) or thrombosis or thrombophilia (too much clotting that will cause blood clots to block the blood flow).

The various proteins in the blood play an important role in a normal clotting process. Coagulopathy is caused by reducing levels of blood-clotting proteins, known as clotting factors or coagulation factors. There are some genetic disorders, like hemophilia and Von Willebrand’s disease, also can cause a reduction in coagulation factors. Coagulopathy may also occur due to reduced levels of platelets.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF COAGULOPATHY

Experiencing coagulopathy symptoms daily or once a while, sometimes these can be severe. The following symptoms may occur:

  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding
  • Bleeding of the mouth and gums
  • Easy bleeding or bruising
  • Frequent nosebleeds

SYMPTOMS OF COAGULOPATHY FOLLOWING INJURY

Coagulopathy reduces the blood clotting ability. Some bleeding may be occurring after a minor surgery or injury, excessive bleeding is a symptom of coagulopathy. Excessive or extended bleeding may occur after:

  • Dental procedures
  • Loss of a tooth
  • Minor cuts
  • Surgery

SYMPTOMS OF COAGULOPATHY FOLLOWING JOINT BLEEDING

Excessive bleeding in an elbows, knees or other joints caused due to coagulopathy. There are some symptoms indicates that the bleeding is occurring in joints:

  • Joint pain
  • Joint swelling
  • The Joint feels hot to the touch
  • Joint tightness
  • Reduced mobility

SYMPTOMS OF COAGULOPATHY INDICATE A LIFE-THREATENING CONDITION

In some conditions, coagulopathy can cause bleeding in the person's brain or internal organs, which can be life threatening. Some life-threatening symptoms include:

  • Pink-colored urine (hematuria)
  • Bloody stool
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizures
  • Loss of vision or changes in vision
  • Repeated vomiting

CAUSES OF COAGULOPATHY

Healthy platelet level requires for Blood clotting and there are 20 proteins involved, called clotting factors, or coagulation factors. When the body lacks or has low levels of one or more of these proteins, then it causes coagulopathy. Coagulopathy also occurs when the level of platelets reduced.

GENETIC CAUSES OF COAGULOPATHY

There is some genetic disorder which causes coagulopathy, such as:

  • Antithrombin III deficiency
  • Factor II deficiency
  • Factor V deficiency
  • Factor VII deficiency
  • Factor X deficiency
  • Factor XII deficiency
  • Protein C deficiency
  • Protein S deficiency
  • Hemophilia A or B
  • Von Willebrand’s disease (hereditary bleeding disorder)

OTHER CAUSES OF COAGULOPATHY

There are other causes too, which affects the blood clotting ability, like chronic disease, severe infection, and the long-term use of certain medications. The conditions that may lead to coagulopathy include:

  • Use of Anticoagulant drug, such as heparin.
  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
  • Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
  • Long-term use of antibiotic.
  • Chronic hepatic disease
  • Viral infection
  • Vitamin K deficiency

DIAGNOSIS OF COAGULOPATHY

Coagulopathy diagnosis undergoes different tests:

  1. Complete Blood Count with Platelet- This is done to know the quantity of Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, and Platelet counts.
  2. Bleeding Time - This is done to know the time (in seconds) the small blood vessels to close and stop the bleed.
  3. Fibrinogen Level - This is done to measure the number of proteins and clotting factor (Factor 1) that plays a role in blood clotting.
  4. Hageman Factor Assay, Factor 5, Factor 7, Factor 8, and Factor 10 level - This is to know the measurement of the levels of the essential clotting factors important for blood clotting process.
  5. Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT) - It is the blood test that measures the total clotting time per cycle.

RISK FACTORS FOR COAGULOPATHY

There are several factors which increase the risk of developing coagulopathy. Risk factors for coagulopathy include:

  • Menorrhagea, in the case of Von Willebrand’s disease
  • Male gender, in the case of hemophilia
  • Parent or sibling with coagulopathy disorder

DIETARY CHANGES FOR COAGULOPATHY

Blood clotting is very essential for preventing hemorrhages when you have been cut or bruised. Some dietary changes essential for the body to carry out the process of blood clotting, and you can get these nutrients from eating a balanced diet.

Leafy Vegetables

Leafy green vegetables are the best sources of vitamin K, which is named from the German word for 'coagulation', according to the Linus Pauling. The primary function of vitamin K is as an essential component for coagulation cascade. A spinach, broccoli and parsley each provides vitamin K nutrient. Vitamin K also get from soybean oil.

Dairy Products

Dairy products help in blood clotting because of their calcium. Calcium is an essential mineral in the coagulation cascade that results in blood clotting. Milk, cheese and yogurt are rich sources of calcium.

Foods High in Manganese

Good sources of this mineral, which is important for blood clotting, healing wounds and forming strong bones, you need to the trace mineral manganese. Theses include tea, seafood, beans, nuts, seeds, whole-wheat bread, tofu and green leafy vegetables. Wild blueberries, coconut, okra also provide significant amounts of manganese as well.

Foods High in Copper

If person not taking proper copper in the diet, it could cause difficulties in blood clotting. Copper is very important for immune function and help in forming RBCs. The significant amount is found in seafood, beans, nuts, seeds, mushrooms, kale, avocado, dried fruit, goat cheese, quail and coconut.

Bleeding Disorders – Types, Causes & Ayurvedic Treatment with Coolant Combination Sachets

Let's Learn About Bleeding Disorders

bleeding disorders

WHAT ARE THEY?

In a bleeding disorder, the tendency of clotting blood naturally is affected. Blood coagulation is the process of clotting in which blood changes its state from liquid to solid to prevent excessive loss of blood. Bleeding disorders can cause unusual bleeding internally and externally both which can cause severe loss of blood. This disorder can be caused due to Vitamin K deficiency, adverse effects of medicines as some medicines can interfere in blood coagulation and a reduced red blood cell count.

AYURVEDIC POINT OF VIEW!

Ayurveda follows the basic concept of 'Dosha Dhatu Mala' which is related to the three doshas, Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Water). Dhatu or tissues are of seven types which are Rasa (Lymph, serum), Rakta (blood), Mansa (Flesh, muscles), Meda (Adipose tissue), Asthi (Bones), Majja (bone marrow), Shukra (Sperm & ovum). If these dhatus get disturbed then it starts deteriorating the body's function. Mala are the waste matter which needs to be excreted from the body. Ahara (food) Mala are of three types: Mutra (urine), purish (feces) and sweda (sweat). Dhatu mala are the secretions from eyes, ears and nose.

Bleeding disorders according to Ayurveda are caused by vitiated pitta. Hence, to cure a bleeding disorder, pitta dosha should be balanced first.

VARIOUS BLEEDING DISORDERS:
