Plihari Vatika - Medicinal Properties, Ingredients, Indications, Dosage & More

Reference : A.F.I. Part 1 – 12:17 (Bhaisajyaratnavalli, Plihayakridrogadhikara, verse 59)

Abstract

Spleen and liver epidemics surge amid toxin overload, weakened agni, and Pitta-Kapha aggravation, yet Ayurveda offers holistic relief through splenolhepatic detoxification, channel clearance, and vitality restoration. Ayurveda links Pliha roga (splenomegaly) from initial abdominal disease to chronic liver disorder, marked by edema, dyspnea, and toxin accumulation amid dietary indiscretions and seasonal shifts. Hepatic stressors and Vata-Pitta dosha imbalance drive abdominal masses, cough, breathlessness, and burning sensations in monsoon-vulnerable regions, mirroring modern NAFLD with systemic inflammation. Plihari Vatika, a potent herbo-mineral tablet, halts this progression effectively. Let’s explore this formulation.

Introduction

Plihari Vatika, a potent classical Ayurvedic herbo-mineral formulation from Bhaisajya Ratnavali. As the name suggests it excels in spleen disorder that has pacifying action for liver-spleen channels. This Pitta-Kapha-Vata-balancing preparation harnesses detoxifying, swelling-reducing, channel-clearing, digestive fire-kindling, and toxin-digesting effects. It masterfully resolves splenomegaly-to-chronic liver disorder progression, abdominal tumors, cough, breathlessness, burning sensation, edema, and mass-like wasting by breaking dosha blockages, enhancing bioavailability, and revitalizing liver-spleen pathways.

Classical Indication

  4. Lasuna (Allium sativum) – 1 Part
  5. Dronapushpi Swaras (Juice of Leucas aspera) – Q.S. (For Levigation)

Ingredient Description

1. Kumari (Aloe vera)

Sahasara (Aloe vera) powerfully penetrates Pitta-Kapha blockages in splenolhepatic channels to relieve splenomegaly, edema, and abdominal masses, with its sheeta (cooling), snigdha (unctuous), and pitta-shamaka gunas quenching burning sensation (daha) and detoxifying ama-laden liver-spleen tissues. Katu-tikta rasa (pungent-bitter taste) promotes bile flow, resolves gulma, and supports edema clearance via diuretic action; aloin and polysaccharides deliver hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects against toxin-induced liver damage, making it ideal for monsoon-related shotha and yakrit vikara with systemic inflammation.

2. Abhraka Bhasma (Mica Clax)

Abhraka bhasma (calcined mica) nourishes and revitalizes depleted splenolhepatic tissues in chronic spleen disorders and Vata-Pitta disorders, providing rasayana (rejuvenative) support for organ repair. Lekhana (scraping), ushna (heating), and sukshma (subtle) gunas scrape deep-seated kapha deposits, kindle agni, and expel endotoxins while enhancing bioavailability of co-herbs. Its nano-mineral structure offers potent antioxidant, anti-fibrotic, and bronchodilatory benefits, synergizing to halt splenomegaly progression, resolve cough-dyspnea in liver weakness, and prevent wasting from toxin overload.

3. Kasis Shuddha (Purified Green Vitriol)

Kasis suddha (purified ferrous sulfate) excels as a potent kapha-pitta harmonizer in edema, anemia-linked splenomegaly, and abdominal distension, breaking down srotas (microchannels) obstructions with its ushna (heating), tikshna (piercing), and lavana (salty) properties. Katu rasa dissolves sticky ama, neutralizes acidic toxins, and facilitates channel clearance while replenishing iron for hemoglobin support; its unique astringent alkalinity counters pollution-induced inflammation, offering hemostatic relief in shotha and supporting agni-pachana to resolve gulma, trishna, and toxin-triggered tremors.

4. Lasuna (Allium sativum)

Lasuna (Allium sativum) delivers tikshna (sharp), ushna virya, and guru (heavy) property action to kindle weak digestive fire in agnimandya, dissolve gulma, and clear respiratory channels in cough-vertigo from liver-spleen ama (endotoxins). Allicin and sulfur compounds confer broad-spectrum antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and mucolytic protection against pathogens, reducing spasms and nausea. It synergistically balances the formula's minerals, prevents vata aggravation, and fortifies channels for sustained relief in chronic edema, burning, and monsoon-linked disorders.

5. Dronapushpi Swaras (Juice of Leucas aspera)

Dronapushpi swarasa (Leucas aspera juice) serves as the potent tikta-katu (bitter-pungent) liquid medium for grinding and binding Plihari Vatika, penetrating deep Vata-Kapha-Pitta blockages in splenolhepatic and pranavaha channels to relieve shotha, kasa, and gulma. Its ushna virya (heating potency), laghu-sukshma gunas (light-subtle qualities), and diuretic properties liquefy edema fluid, kindle digestive fire, and expel urinary endotoxins while resolving tremors and vertigo from systemic toxin buildup. Flavonoids and alkaloids deliver anti-inflammatory, bronchodilatory, and hepatoprotective effects, synergizing minerals for optimal absorption; ideal for monsoon edema, cough with swelling, and liver-spleen revitalization in dosha imbalances.

Method Of Preparation

The ingredients are individually powdered finely, then combined in khalva yantra (mortar and pestle) and triturated with freshly extracted Dronapushpi swarasa (Leucas aspera juice) for three prahara (9 hours) until kardama bhava (soft clay-like consistency) is achieved, enhancing herbo-mineral synergy and srotas (microchannels) penetration; the paste is then shade-dried thinly, rolled into uniform 250 mg vati (tablets), ensuring optimal bioavailability for splenolhepatic detoxification without heat exposure that could degrade potency.

Medicinal Properties

Pliha Roga (Spleen Disorders) : Use Plihari Vatika with Kumaryasava (15 ml) and warm water to enhance splenolhepatic detoxification, reduce organ enlargement, and clear yakrit-plihavaha srotas blockages through Abhraka's rejuvenative scraping action.

Gulma (Abdominal Masses) : Combine Plihari Vatika with Punarnavadi Kwatha (30 ml) to dissolve abdominal obstructions, kindle weak agni, and resolve Pitta-Kapha mediated distension via Lasuna's deep-penetrating ama-pachana.

Shotha (Edema) : Take Plihari Vatika with Punarnava Churna (3 g) in warm water for potent diuretic action, fluid clearance, and srotas unblocking through Dronapushpi svarasa's tikta potency.

Kasa-Shwasa (Cough-Asthma From Liver Weakness) : Administer Plihari Vatika with Sitopaladi Churna (3 g) and honey to liquefy sputum, relieve thoracic oppression, and pacify respiratory complications of splenomegaly.

Agnimandya With Chardi (Indigestion-Vomiting) : Pair Plihari Vatika with Hingvastaka Churna (2 g) in buttermilk to ignite digestive fire, control nausea, and eliminate toxin-mediated emesis from pitta aggravation.

Daha-Trishna (Burning Sensation-Thirst) : Use Plihari Vatika with Chandanasava (20 ml) to cool systemic inflammation, quench excessive thirst, and balance pitta overflow from liver dysfunction.
