Natural Treatment for Impetigo and Cellulitis

Impetigo is a common and transmissible infection of skin mainly affecting the children and infants. In this condition, usually red sores can be seen on the face, around the mouth and nose, and on feet and hands of the child. After sometime, the sores burst and develop honey colored crusts.

Cellulitis is the complication of the impetigo or can be defined as a common and painful infection of skin. The infection firstly appears as a red colored swollen area which feels tender and hot when touched. It can occur on any part of the body or face but the most affected areas of this disorder is skin of the lower legs. The bacterial infection can spread to other body parts also via bloodstream and lymph nodes.

Impetigo, Cellulitis

Causes of impetigo include the exposure to the bacteria that develops impetigo. When you come in contact with an infected person's sores by using his towel, clothes, toys, bed linen then his bacteria may enter into your body and cause infection.

Cellulitis occurs when Staphylococcus or Streptococcus bacteria enters into your body by crack or cut on the skin and begins to develop infection. The infection can begin in surgical wounds, bug bites and cuts.

Common signs and symptoms of Impetigo and Cellulitis are:

  1. Redness and inflammation of the skin
  2. Pain and tenderness
  3. A skin rash or sore develops quickly
  4. Swelling, tightness, glossiness of affected area
  5. An abscess with pus
  6. Warmth feeling in affected area
  7. Intermittent fever

Some serious symptoms include:

  2. Shaking
  3. Feeling ill
  4. Sweating

Observing following symptoms will indicate that infection is spreading:

  1. Blisters
  2. Lethargy
  3. Drowsiness

Factors triggering the risk of Impetigo and Cellulitis are:

  • Crowded conditions:  As these diseases are contagious, they can easily pass from one infected child to other children. Crowded places such as schools and child care centers are at high risk of spreading impetigo and cellulitis.
  • Humid, Warm weather: Children can be easily prone to these diseases in humid and warm weather such as summer season.
  • Age: Impetigo and cellulitis are more common in age between 2 and 5 years.
  • Certain sports: Some sports involving skin to skin contact such as basketball, football, boxing or wrestling can pass infection from one person to another very easily.
  • Broken skin: Cuts, cracks, insect bite or rashes can make easy entry of bacteria into the body which further causes infection.

Cellulitis can further give rise to many complications such as:

  1. Severe tissue damage (gangrene)
  2. Spoilage of infected internal organs
  3. Severe kidney problems
  4. Scarring
  5. Amputation

The doctor will diagnose Impetigo and Cellulitis by looking at the sores. A physical examination might reveal:

  1. Swollen glands
  2. Warmth and redness of the affected area
  3. Swelling of the skin

If a physical exam wouldn't be enough. Then the doctor may take a sample of the liquid secreted from the sores and send it to the laboratory for analysis.
