9 Natural Ways To Manage Chronic Cough

Cough is the natural body mechanism to expel the mucus or any other particle that get stuck in our airway and it usually gets subsided once the blockage is cleared. Meanwhile, it can also get associated with any underlying disease condition. While some types can be mild, others can be life-taking. Whatever be the reason, it should never be ignored. Once neglected, cough can lead to tuberculosis, dyspnoea, COPD and various other severe ailments. When a cough persists for more than 3-4 weeks, it is said to be a chronic cough and should be treated at the earliest.

Chronic cough

In Ayurveda classics, five different types of cough are described and the treatment is based on the different presentations of the cough produced. Eventhough any of the vitiated tridoshas (vata, pitta and kapha) may lead to the manifestation of cough, vata is the main dosha involved. The vitiation of Vata occur mainly either due to the 'dhathukshaya' (depletion of tissues) or 'aavarana' of vata (occlusion of vata by kapha dosha). Several factors are responsible for the formation of cough but the first and foremost direct causative factors mentioned by the scholars are the 'raja' (dust) and 'dhooma' (smoke). Main pathology of a chronic cough is found in the chest area with altered functioning of the respiratory system. Although a large number of herbal remedies are available that bring about relief from persistent cough, let us go through some of the effective remedies which are described in our Ayurveda classics.

  1. Powder of equal quantity of pippali (Piper longum), maricha (Piper nigrum) and sunthi (Zingiber officinale) along with jaggery and ghee is found to be very efficacious in cough and asthma. Similarly, pippali powder alone mixed with ghee, honey and sugar candy can also be licked frequently in cough and hoarseness of voice.
  2. Soup of green gram is prepared by adding the juice of kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum). Consumption of this soup by adding gooseberry to it is advantageous in different types of cough.
  3. Fresh juice of rhizome of ginger or black basil leaves mixed with honey provides relief from cough. For those cough with vata predominant symptoms like that of dry cough, juice of vasaka (Adathoda vasica) is found to be effective. The same juice when taken along with trikatu (piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale) is beneficial in productive cough.
  4. Fruits of gooseberry are boiled in milk and then made into a powder. Ghee sprinkled with this powder can be consumed in conditions like ‘kshayajakasa’ where there is vitiation of tridoshas and in which emaciation of body takes place.
  5. Intake of gruel prepared from rice etc by adding with equal quantity of sesame seeds and little rock salt is very useful in chronic cough with vata predominant symptoms.
  6. Practice of gargling (kabala) or mouth-filling (gandusha) either with salted lukewarm water or medicated liquids is worthwhile in most kind of cough. Honey, green gram soup, certain decoctions etc can be used accordingly for this purpose.
  7. Herbal smoking (dhoomapana) is worth trying in chronic coughs but it is advisable to be done cautiously under an expert. The drugs like maricha (Piper nigrum), pippali (Piper longum), ela (Elettaria cardomomum), tulsi (Ocimum sanctum) etc are used for preparing medicated smoke which is inhaled through nostrils, especially in cough where excess sputum is present.
  8. Judicious selection of head and body massage oil is crucial in cases of chronic cough. Generally, oil application is contraindicated in those conditions when there is excess kapha in the body. There are chances of aggravation if the property of oil counteracts with the prakruthi (constitution) and disease condition of the individual.
  9. For any disease to get subsided, the essential criteria to be followed are “Nidana parivarjanam eva chikitsa”. This implies that absconding from the causative factors is the main treatment for a disease. Hence the predisposing factors like improper food habits, suppression of natural urges, excess exertion above one’s capacity, excess sleep, over exposure to heat, dust, smoke, sun etc should be avoided.

With these remedies and techniques, chronic cough can be managed to a far extent but medical supervision under an expert is highly advised depending on the severity of the condition.
