Ayurvedic Treatment of Dactylodynia - Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Herbal Remedies

In today's world, many people have desk jobs that involve to work on computer all day long. This much repetition and overuse can cause hands as well as wrist issues. Even those who use computers or smartphones recreationally and spend several hours per day typing on the keyboard can be at a risk of developing dactylodynia.

Dactylodynia now-a-days is witnessed due to extensive thumb or finger motion on keypad, keyless laptops, tablets or smartphones. The repetitive hand movements on mobiles, laptops or keyboards can contribute to dactylodynia.

Proper treatment relieves the pain and restores hand and wrist function.

The symptoms usually start gradually. It causes discomfort in the fingers as well as thumb of the hand.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF DACTYLODYNIA?

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Dactylodynia can be diagnosed by a physical examination.

Modern medicine prescribes certain treatments such as the prescription of certain corticosteroids as corticosteroids decrease pain, swelling and inflammation but these provide only temporary relief and cause certain side effects as well.

TREATMENT OF DACTYLODYNIA ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

According to Ayurveda, it is caused due to Vata imbalance in the body. Any kind of joint and muscle pain are due to the aggravation of Vata in the body. The joint pain can be aggravated by the improper use of joints, stress, over-exertion.

Herbal Remedies For Dactylodynia

1. Ortho Vita Oil

These herbs are prepared from the standardised extracts of the two ingredients- Boswellia serrata and Curcuma longa. PREVENTION

  1. Take frequent breaks: Stretch and bend the hands and wrists periodically. Alternate the tasks if possible.
  2. If your work involves using keyboard frequently, hit the keys softly.
  3. Improve the posture: Incorrect posture affects the wrists, fingers and hands. So, correct the posture while working on computer or laptop.
  4. Change the computer mouse: Make sure that the computer mouse is comfortable and does not strain the wrist or hands.
  5. Keep the hands warm: The pain and stiffness in hands are likely to develop in a cold environment. So, make sure to keep the hands warm.

EXERCISE

It is very important to protect the hands as well as wrists in order to avoid pain while using a keyboard. There are certain exercises that help to protect the hands and wrists while using a computer and reduce the risk of pain.

These Exercises Are:

  1. Hold the arms out straight in front of you with the wrists limp. Keep the arms still and raise the wrists so that the fingers point towards the ceiling, then lower the wrists so that the fingers point downwards. Repeat this exercise 10 times.
  2. Lay on the forearm on a flat surface and rotate the wrist in a full clockwise direction and repeat this exercise 5 times. Then, reverse the motion to perform 5 full counter-clock wise motions.
  3. Open both the hands and stretch all the fingers out and then close them and make a fist. Continue this exercise for 20 repetitions.
