Ayurvedic Treatment for Arthrogryposis


Sometimes People think that joint problems are mainly seen with the age but it is not the truth, joint deformities can be by birth. Have you heard about Arthrogryposis? It is one the condition in which joints and bones are affected by birth. The joints of the shoulders, elbows, knees, wrists, ankles, fingers, toes, and/or hips are also commonly affected. In some cases, the jaws and back may also be affected in this problem.

Here we will discuss the various aspects of Arthrogryposis in details like which factors are responsible for Arthrogryposis and what symptoms can be seen and herbal treatment for Arthrogryposis. This condition is also called arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. "Arthrogryposis" means the joints are curved or crooked joints. "Multiplex" means it affects more than one joint. "Congenita" means the condition is present at birth.

It is defined as a non-progressive, congenital neuromuscular syndrome characterized by severe joint contracture, muscle weakness & fibrosis'', affects multiple joints, and is present at birth. It may affect joints in the arms or legs, though the latter are more commonly affected. Both large and small joints are likely to show contractures.


There are many causes of the disease, some of which are inherited. Before birth, there are various reasons exist that limit joint movements:

  • Abnormal development of muscles
  • Inadequate room in the uterus for the baby
  • A malformed central nervous system and spinal cord
  • Tendons, joints, bones, and joint linings which did not mature correctly. The decrease in range of motion is also caused by extra tissue that has formed around the joint, prohibiting movement.
  • Hyperthermia of fetus
  • Peri-natal viral infection
  • Fetal vascular compromise
  • Septum of the uterus
  • Decreased amniotic fluid
  • Muscles and connective tissue abnormality
  • Abnormal connective tissue or joints which limit movement
  • Decreased space in the womb in which fetus can move for example as in case of twins.


Patients who are diagnosed with this kind of condition will experience the following symptoms:

  • Involuntary twisting of the hands and forearms
  • Stretching of the elbows
  • Immobility of the ankle and wrists joints
  • Bending of the knee and foot
  • Rigidity of the joint
  • Joint dislocation
  • Craniofacial malformation
  • Cardiac problems
  • Decrease in the muscle mass
  • Feeding problems due to short gut
  • Presence of short umbilical cord
  • Fetal akinesia


As per Ayurveda there are three main energies in the body which are responsible for good health. Imbalance of any three doshas may cause health problems like joint problems. Aggravation of vata doshas is responsible for joint problems. The main goal of herbal treatment is to balance the all three dosahs in body.


The main goal of treatment for arthrogryposis is to help your child's joints move as normally as possible. This means improving their flexibility, their strength and the way their bones line up. For your child's lower body, the focus is on working with their feet and legs so they may be able to stand and walk. For their upper body, the focus is on working with their hands and arms so they may be able to do things on their own. There are various herbs which are useful to manage the symptoms of arthrogryposis.

1. Mahamash Oil

4. Draksha Avleh

Dosage - 1/2 spoon two times daily with warm water or milk.

5. Ashwagandha Powder

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is one of the most potent herb used in Ayurveda since ancient years. It helps to maintain the overall health. Due to its different therapeutic properties it is useful in treatment of different disorders. It is very effective in reduction of swellings and restoring blood supply. This herb has rejuvenating property that provides nourishment to the tissues, mainly of muscle and bones.

Dosage - 1/2 to 1 spoon twice daily.

6. Boswellia Curcumin Capsules

These capsules are prepared from standardized extracts Shallaki (Boswellia curcumin) and Haridra (Curcuma longa). These herbs possess properties like anti-inflammatory and useful in painful conditions in rheumatoid arthritis. They also improves local blood circulation and flexibility of joints along reducing pain and swelling. These herbs having ant- inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties and is efficient in reducing joint swelling, arthritic pain and morning stiffness and increase the mobility.

Dosage - 1-2 capsule daily two times with water after meal.
