Aspergillus Osteomyelitis Treatment in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda cause of fungal infection is increased vata dosha which results in the deterioration of tissues (dhatu). Clinical signs of Aspergillus spondylodiscitis may include

  • Back pain that ranges from mild to severe
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Infection of central nervous system (CNS)
  • Aspergillosis extends into the epidural space which leads to the spinal cord compression. 


Sternal aspergillosis is strongly associated with thoracic surgery. Route of infection is direct injection of the wound through surgery, post-operative wound care or airborne transmission. Sternal aspergillosis is commonly associated with concurrent mediastinal abscesses or polymicrobial wound infections.


Aaspergillosis of ribs and long bones is associated with patients who have the chronic granulomatous disease, immunosuppressed recipients of solid organ transplants, experienced traumatic or surgical infection of affected bones.


Invasive Aspergillus mastoiditis occurs when there is spread of infection from the middle ear into the mastoid process, petrous and temporal bones.


  • Hearing loss
  • Otalgia (ear pain)
  • Otorrhea (ear discharge)
  • Cranial nerve deficits

Risk Factors

  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Hematologic malignancy
  • Chronic granulomatous disease


Aspergillus osteomyelitis of the cranium and mandible may occur as a consequence of other infections such as invasive Aspergillus otitis or sinusitis. There are different routes through which Aspergillus may invade the temporal bone and lateral skull base like external ear or the tympanic cavity in acute or chronic otitis media.

Host factors are similar like the other forms of Aspergillus osteomyelitis. But symptoms may include

  • Pain
  • Local swelling
  • Nasal discharge
  • Cranial nerve deficits

When the mandible is involved symptoms are

  • Fever
  • Local swelling
  • Necrotic gingivitis


Septic arthritis is infectious arthritis caused by Aspergillus. Aspergillosis of the joint space also may occur.

Symptoms may include

  • Painful and swollen infected joints
  • Limited range of motion
  • Severe pain
  • Fever
  • Weight loss


Thumbs, cuneiform and navicular bones found to be infected in patients with aplastic anemia and chronic granulomatous disease. In Aspergillus osteomyelitis of upper and lower limbs. Some times Aspergillus osteomyelitis may also mimic bacterial infections.
