Ayurvedic Treatment for Asherman's Syndrome

Asherman's Syndrome, a rare condition of intrauterine adhesions which is characterized by variable scarring inside the uterine cavity /or the cervix. The adhesions can be thick or thin, spotted in location, or confluent. This problem mostly develops after uterine surgery which can lead to uterine inflammation.

In certain cases the front and back of the uterus may get adhere together, the opening to the fallopian tubes scarred shut, or the cervix covered over with scar tissue.

The outcome of scarring can be lighter periods or no periods at all in almost every women affected or infertility. In case Asherman reaches to severe condition there may occurs complete blockage of menstrual blood (endometrial lining) from being shed naturally each menses which further can progress to the formation of endometriosis, another painful and debilitating fertility issue.

Asherman's Syndrome

Depending on the range and thickness of the adhesions Asherman's Syndrome can be;

  • Mild Asherman's Syndrome - where the adhesions are thin and flimsy and easily torn with a thin instrument.
  • Moderate Asherman's Syndrome - The adhesion is thicker in this grade with strands of muscular tissue mixed with the fibrous tissue.
  • Severe Asherman's Syndrome - The adhesions are thick, and there is extensive damage of the endometrium

Ayurvedic View is that disturbed Vata causes irregular and painful menstruation and disturbed "Pitta-the thermal energy" which when Increases can lead to heavy bleeding, hot flushes and irritable condition.

  • The general reason of Asherman Syndrome is repeated dilatation and curettage (D&C) procedures done after Pregnancy
  • In Non Pregnancy cases Intrauterine surgery performed to discard fibroids, or repair structural defects, or defects caused due to the use of IUD birth control devices
  • Sporadic inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the uterus (endometriosis), or endometriosis caused by a pelvic tuberculosis infection or certain other infectious diseases or even certain STDs
  • Radiotherapy as a part of cancer treatment inside or around the uterus can be also a reason to cause damage and adhesion formation.

A risk factor elevates the probability of getting a condition compared to an individual without the risk factors.

  • Congenital defects of the uterus, like septate uterus or bicornuate uterus, increase the risk for Asherman Syndrome
  • Repetitive miscarriages, leads to repeated D&C procedures
  • Having any uterine surgery can raise the chances.

  • There is Menstrual Irregularities, scanty or absence of menstrual flow.
  • There is Painful mensuration which includes increased cramps and abdominal pain or Infertility.
  • Cyclic pelvic pain may occur if scar tissue blocks the outflow of the menstrual blood.
  • The affected person may suffer from recurrent miscarriages or infertility.
