Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a Chronic Inflammatory Autoimmune Disorder due to the symptoms and causes involved in it. Mainly, the lining of joints gets affected in this disease. Below, we will discuss about its risk factors and other related points in detail, but a main thing that is to be known should be explained here. It is true that numerous factors can trigger RA, but the breastfeeding can reduce the risk of RA.1

The symptoms of RA can be seen in one or more body parts at once or gradually. Initially, it may affect the smaller joints of the body such as fingers and toes. With time, the Shoulders, Wrists, Elbows, Knees, Hips and Ankles can also be involved. Mostly, the symptoms are experienced in the same joints of body parts, on both sides (both hands, both legs, both knees, etc.).

अङ्ग्मर्दोअरुचिस्तृष्णाह्यालस्यं गौरवं ज्वरः।
अपाकः शूनताअङ्गानामामवातस्य लक्षणम्।।

As per the modern medical system, when the immune system attacks the synovium (the membrane lining surrounding the joints that assures the smooth movement of joints by producing required fluid), it becomes RA3.

As per Ayurveda, it is believed that the accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the body is responsible for Rheumatoid Arthritis. These toxins hamper the proper blood flow and functioning of the body parts leading to the destruction of cartilage and bones and weakening of tendons and ligaments. Moreover, the Vata dosha gets vitiated in this health problem. Therefore, RA is termed as Aamvata in Ayurvedic system of medicine.
