HSCR is a birth defect in which there is an absence of ganglions (nerve cells), this ultimately blocks the movement of stool through intestines (peristalsis). Peristalsis is a process that creates wave-like contractions that propel stool and other toxic materials from the digestive system. Abnormality in this process may lead to constipation and obstructions of bowel partially or completely.

Hirschsprung disease usually affects males from 3-4 times as compared to females. According to the studies, this disease affects approximately one in 50,000 individuals once in a lifetime. This occurs shortly after birth and may develop in adults with a history of constipation.

Hirschsprung disease is known to be associated with a mutation in several different gene mutations and abnormalities. It is believed that if a person is predisposed to disease and carries a gene, but the symptoms don't get triggered without any external environmental factor. There are two main groups of genes i.e. RET genes and ENDRB genes. Some of the genetic syndromes like Mowat-Wilson, Waardenburg, Bardet-Biedel, Cartilage-Hair hypoplasia, etc. can be associated with this disorder.

Newborn with HSCR show a major symptom that includes failure to pass the meconium shortly after birth. Meconium is a dark-colored substance of sticky consistency present in the intestine at birth and is passed as the first bowel movement after birth. It is believed that failure in passing the first stool for about 24-48 hours is an indication of the onset of HSCR.

This is referred to as Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis that occurs in almost 3-4% of individuals with HSCR. This situation mostly occurs after the Swenson procedure and diarrhea after the soave pull-through procedure.
